Failed 2012 giveaway ideas
The Padres have just made a deal with the Reds.
To Cincinnati: RHP Mat Latos
To San Diego: RHP Edinson Volquez, 1B/LF Yonder Alonso, C Yasmani Grandal, RHP Brad Boxberger
How does this affect the A's chances of trading Gio Gonzalez this offseason?
The A's have posted their schedule for promotions and giveaways, with more to be added in the future, I'm sure.
There are some pretty cool ones, such as the 1972 A's celebration and Rollie Fingers bobblehead on Apr. 21, kids baseball socks (hopefully they come with stirrups too) on June 16, a curious Gio Gonzalez bobblehead on June 17 and a Scott Hatteberg bobblehead on Aug. 18
Here are a few ideas that were somehow left on the cutting room floor:
Apr. 6 vs. Seattle — Groundhog Day
Bill Murray throws out the ceremonial first pitch to "Punxsutawny" Phil Garner, A's players come onto the field to the tunes of Sonny & Cher's "I've Got You, Babe," and once again are thoroughly dominated by face Mariners ace Felix Hernandez.
Apr. 22 vs. Cleveland — 30th anniversary of the 1982 Oakland A's
One day after the 1972 team is fêted, Rickey Henderson, Joe Rudi and the best Dan Meyer in Oakland history (no, not that one, the other one) come back to the Coliseum for a remembrance of a team that time forgot — the 1982 Oakland A's. With a record of 68-94, these players will remind the current squad that, hey, it can always get worse.
More after the jump.
May 22 vs. Los Angeles of Anaheim — Occupy the Coliseum
A's fans are invited to sit anywhere they choose (for a Tuesday night game, surely there will be many options) and loudly oppose newly-minted one-percenter Albert Pujols and the Angels.
June 16 vs. San Diego — Remembering the 2006-2010 Athletics
Several former A's from this era will be on hand, such as Huston Street, Mark Kotsay, Aaron Cunningham, Chris Denorfia and Jeremy Hermida.
June 21 vs. Los Angeles Dodgers — Kobe Bryant and Frank McCourt Day
Half of the runs the Dodgers earn will be awarded to the A's. The Dodgers will also be forced to give back this ring.
July 2 vs. Boston — Trade-in Night
Andrew Bailey or Gio Gonzalez bobbleheads, shirseys and other memorabilia can be traded in for Stockton Ports, Vermont Lake Monsters and Sacramento River Cats apparel.
Aug. 6 vs. Los Angeles of Anaheim — Map Night
The first 20,000 fans Whoever bothers to show up this night will receive a map of the greater Los Angeles vicinity, noting where Los Angeles is and where the separate city of Anaheim is.
Aug. 21 vs. Minnesota — "What would you do with a million dollars?" night, sponsored by Coors Light
Twins get in free.
Sept. 14 vs. Baltimore — Depressed Fanbase Night
The 300 fans in attendance may get to see a team with fewer playoff hopes than the A's — the Baltimore Orioles! Drinks at The Field Irish Pub half off.

I remember well Opening Night 2011
had the A’s played decent defense, and had Cahill pitched decently, there’s a good chance the A’s would have won that game.
So if they played well in 2/3 of the game they could have won?
That’s probably true for most losing efforts.

Aaron Cunningham sends his regrets
Unfortunately, a trade to Cleveland precludes his attentance on June 16, 2012.
Wow, that was quick
The deal happened yesterday. My apologies… ESPN hadn’t updated the roster, apparently.

Why are the Padres getting more for Latos than the A's got for Cahill?
Alonso/Grandal/Boxberger/Volquez >>>> Parker/Cowgill/Cook
And Cahill >>>> Latos
Soo………
Well Latos is way better than Cahill
But I much prefer the Cincy package as well.
"Loyal? I'm the most loyal player money can buy." - Don Sutton
What's interesting about this
is that Latos is more valuable than Gio, but not by too much. So any Gio package would likely look somewhat similar to that. Which is really nice. That’s a haul.
I think Alonso is significantly overrated.
His OPS this season was 100 points higher than his minor league career OPS. His BABIP was significantly higher, too. Grandal’s literally the only piece I like in this deal. I don’t think that’s the return you look for in return for somebody who’s a lot better than Gonzalez is.
I agree Alonso is over-rated... he won't show traditional 1B power
But he’s also a legit B/B+ prospect.

Yu Darvish
With it looking like either Texas or the Blue Jays won the bid on Yu Darvish, how do you think this will play out? I wonder if the winning team will come to a deal with Darvish. I believe Darvish was making about 8 million a year in Japan. If he signs a six year deal at the same money, that is another $48 million added on to the likely $48 million winning big. Hard to see Darvish not getting more. I can see Texas throwing a lot of money at him, but not sure Toronto could do some 6 year $120 million deal
So the questions are
1. Did the winning team bid just to stop another team from getting Darvish?
2. Will the winning to get a deal done with Darvish?
3. Will the losing team go for Gio?
In this case there's next to no chance the winning team is just trying to block another
It really would be an abuse of the (flawed) posting system and seriously damage that team’s ability to make use of it in the future, I’m sure of it.
Last of the Ninth - Photography
no chance
Ok, I agree not likley, but how about a team saying “ok we bid a ton on the posting fee, and if he signs for what we want to pay him, great. But if no deal, at least no one else gets him”
Again, very unlikely
Yu Darvish is a big enough talent that the team putting in the biggest bid for him is almost assuredly very, very serious about getting him.
Last of the Ninth - Photography
From what I understand
Rogers Communication, which owns the Blue Jays, gave AA a pile of money and said “go get Darvish”. Maybe they think they can recoup some of the cost with a TV deal in Japan? My guess is whoever wins the bidding war will sign Darvish.
If Toronto get Darvish then Texas just might up their effort on Gio. I’d say there’s also an outside shot Toronto signs Darvish AND continues interest in Gio. I also think they have such a deep farm system that there’s a deal for them to make with SD for a 1B. If the Blue Jays land Darvish, improve at 1B AND still make noise about Gio then I think the Yankees get very serious about Gio.
If Texas signs Darvish then I think Toronto shrugs and moves on. I don’t think they push for Gio and settle in to wait until 2013 to make their move.

Yes, but he also has injury issues (shoulder problem to begin last year) and he doesn't have Cahill's years of control/contract.
In any case, the return for Cahill looks like a pittance compared to this package.

not sure cahill's contract is really a plus
the option years are nice, but they’re at a market rate. and the first 4 years of cahill’s contract are far riskier and more expensive than latos’ control years. the reds will pay for what they get (or don’t) from latos. the dbacks are stuck paying cahill $29M, even if he sucks or gets injured.
I have a theory
that Padres pitchers have an artificially low BB rate. This is due mainly to the fact that for a lefty to pull a home run in Petco requires him to use a mortar and pitchers know this, leaving them less inclined to nibble vs. lefties at home.
In the case of Mat Latos, his BB rate vs. righties is 3.26/9, and vs. lefties it is 2.51/9. Which I’d bet is odd for a right handed pitcher.
At home, his BB rate is 2.55/9, and on the road it is 3.26/9.
Anyways I think Latos’ numbers are inflated by a larger degree than is credited with traditional ballpark adjustments. I don’t think he’s as good as his career 2.8 BB/9 rate. I wouldn’t be surprised to see that number jump over 3.5/9 in 2012.
Volquez and Boxberger aren't exactly filler.
They’re not exactly on the level of Ryan Cook, or even Collin Cowgill-esque filler.

He's absolutely better than Gio.
Same K rate, but walks 1.5 less per 9. Plus, he’s not a Super Two like Gio is, so he’s cheaper.
danmerqury and copenhagen
as 2 veterans and legends of AN, I typically find myself agreeing with you 2.So I doubled checked Latos’ numbers from last year, and damn, you were right. I was certain that he was having a down year last year, and he still posted 185 SO with a 1.18 WHIP. The kid is good. I think GIO is right on par with him, especially factoring in the AL V. NL. I’m upset that the Padres landed such a great package of prospects for Latos, but it is encouraging, because in my eyes Gio has equal value and the same upside. Remember, Gio went 16-12 last year with 197 SO and a 1.32 WHIP playing in the Varsity, while Latos was out there in JV.

not saying that
but come on…..Look what Gio and all of the pitchers go up against everyday in the AL vs. what pitchers face in the NL. There is no comparison. Then factor in all the stats that back this up

Come on folks
I am all for jumping on people who make crazy comments but the AL is certainly tougher on P’s than the NL unquestionably. Nine real life hitters versus eight.
Visit my blog the Todd Van Poppel Rookie Card Retirement Plan!!
It's an overblown point of view as far as I'm concerned
Facing a pitcher instead of some other scrub at the bottom of the order two or three times a start hardly turns people into much better pitchers if they go from the AL to the NL.
Last of the Ninth - Photography
ok, for example, when we play teams from the AL East
Yanks, Red Sox, Rays….those lineups are insane. Then, within our own divison, Texas and now the Halos. Not to mention the Tigers, Twins (when healthy), young Royals, and White Sox…..The NL simply doesn’t have as many deep and talented teams that can hit as the AL. There is really no comparison. It is like comparing the weak Eastern Conference in the NBA to the much stronger, deeper, and better Western Conference. It seems like this has been the trend in both sports over the past decade. AL > NL, WEST > EAST

With him being better who would have been cut out of the deal to send Gio there?
Volquez? Or one of Alonso and Grandal?
Even with park and league adjustments, Latos is still quite a ways better than Gio.

I think that Latos and Gio are virtually even
considering Latos’ shoulder issues and DL stint. He has never reached 200 IP (though he has been close) and though he is cheaper, I think the injury history washes with Gio’s Super 2-ness.
I love you.

Thoughts on an upcoming Andrew Bailey Trade
So, I’m still somewhat shocked by that Matt Latos trade, what a haul for the Padres.
But, looking back to the trade the Red Sox made a few days ago, Jed Lowrie and Kyle Weiland to Houston for Mark Melancon.
Lets remember Melancon as part of the Lance Berkman trade that sent Berkman to the Yanks and Melancon, at the time the Yankees 9th best prospect to Houston with fellow prospect Jimmy Paredes in 2010. Not the best trade for Berkman. But whatever.
Melancon pitched pretty well last year, going 8-4 with 20 Saves while posting a 1.22 WHIP and a 2.78 ERA. He generates a lot of groundballs and — I know this is a huge sample size I’m about to state — two times I’ve seen him pitch I’ve been impressed. Still, I see him as a setup man in Boston, and I see Boston still in pursurt of a closer, especially with the news that their new clown manager Bobby V is going to have Daniel Bard audition as a Starting Pitcher.
So what could we get from Boston for Bailey….He demands more than Melancon, no doubt. But by how much? I’d say at least 1 “B” level prospect in return for Bailey would be fair. I’d ask for either Brandon Jacobs, OF, “B,” or one of their “B” level Third-base Prospects, either Garin Cecchini or Will Middlebrooks would do.

What do you mean "at least one" B prospect? Because one B prospect is an awful return
considering Sergio Santos netted a B+ prospect. We’re talking a bit more than at least one B prospect. I don’t know if the rumors have any basis in actual happenings but I would still like Reddick plus.
I'm not sure Reddick isn't more valuable to the Red Sox than he is to the A's. One of his
strengths is that he’s ready now, and I don’t see the A’s needing to compromise upside for that. I’d try and figure some way to get Bogaerts, even if they have to throw in someone in addition to Bailey.

Uh, let me rephrase that.
A’s don’t need to trade for ready-now players.
Of course we need players now, but there’s no point in giving up other, probably better ready-now players like Gio or Bailey for them.
Baseball is a stupid-making enterprise in that nobody wants to be singled out or say something dumb. —Michael Lewis
A while back you said Reddick would be good for 10-15 HR
and above-average defense in a corner.
The guy has managed a career .332 OBP in the minors, including a .300 OBP in 184 AAA games. How sure are you that Reddick has a starting caliber bat? I have a hard time seeing how a .330 OBP helps the A’s unless it comes with a ton of power.
Above-average defense should be a nice extra, not the key to making Reddick a 3 Win player.
The monster at the end of this blog.
Reddick has some strange statistics in the minors, I'll give you that.
He had a weirdly low BABIP in the two briefer stints he had in AAA, but he still hit 14 HR in 52 games, so I think he’s got enough power to make him worth it. Hm, you might be right though. He might just be Ryan Sweeney but with power instead of an above-average OBP. At least he’s healthy, though.
He’s probably not the ideal target, but Boston seems to be the only team interested in Bailey anymore, and Reddick’s name has already been thrown around.
Then why not hold on to Bailey?
Try and deal him in July when you know there’ll be a market for bullpen arms.
If the A’s are going to deal with Boston I’d rather they focus on Brandon Jacobs and low minors guys.
The monster at the end of this blog.
Because I'm bored.
But Jacobs was my suggested alternative to Reddick just below this. Jacobs, Alcantara, and a throw-in?
I would like Reddick and a prospect as well
But, after that Melancon trade, it scared me a bit as the return we may get for Bailey. I know Bailey is a better player and a more attractive trade chip, but still

I mean, Melancon netted Lowrie, who's sort of like Reddick in that he's good but not a star,
and Kyle Weiland, who could eat some innings in the back of somebody’s rotation. Reddick’s a bit better than Lowrie, IMO, so Reddick and Raul Alcantara and a throw-in (perhaps Alex Hassan, one of the players I covet most) seems fair. Or if they don’t want to give up Reddick, like WC said, then one of their top five position player prospects.
I don’t think they’d give up Bogaerts, but it’s possible. If they do, Oakland would probably have to settle for less after that. So something like Reddick/Jacobs, Alcantara, throw-in?
I would love that
Reddick and Jacobs would be a good haul in my opinion. I really want the A’s to target a legit CATCHING prospect in either the Bailey or Gio trade. All the Red Sox really have to offer is Ryan Lavarnway, who is their #4 prospect, but many people doubt his future as a Catcher. With that said, getting Reddick, who many here at AN seem on the fence about, would be a nice haul with a prospect like Jacobs. Reddick and Middlebrooks or the other 3rd Base prospect would be nice as well.

Reddick
Do you think the A’s could get Reddick for Balfour and a few million. I have read that the Sox do not want to push the payroll up to around 170 million or the luxury tax number. If they go over, the tax is big, or something along those lines. While I am not sure the Red Sox can or realy want to do it. Signing Nick Punto the other day seemed odd if they are looking to cut costs. But by trading Balfour and money. They get another good reliever at little add to their payroll. With Kalish, they could move Reddick.
I wouldn't really say Bailey's "a lot better"
when you factor in health and the fact that Balfour is an very good RP. The years of team control are what most separates them, IMO.

As far as talent we could get in return from Bailey and Gio
it seems people think Texas, Boston and Toronto have the best systems to root through? Any other teams a good fit right now?
I think grover is probably right and we should wait to trade Bailey closer to the trading deadline. How much better could Gio’s value get? If he lowers his BB/9 would help but I don’t know how likely it is he can do that.
With our current offense Gio will sport a W-L record of 0-16
and have a 2.27 ERA.
I’m worried about his WHIP though!
Every man for himself...
I got a pretty good chuckle out of the two Angels promotions. :)
