The A's sent recently acquired righty reliever Ryan Kelly (Corey Wimberly deal) to the Rangers in exchange for righty starter (mostly) Guillermo Moscoso on Saturday.
Moscoso was designated for assignment by Texas a couple of days ago . He pitched very effectively for Caracas in the Venezuelan Winter League compiling a 3-0 record and 2.66 ERA in 10 games, 8 of which were starts (38/17 K/BB in 40 IP)
Does anyone know anything about this guy or have a scouting report on him? It looks like maybe Beane was willing to trade away a pure reliever with possibly a little more upside for a more versatile pitcher who could start or relieve, depending on what's needed. He's seemed to put up decent strikeout numbers, albeit with questionable control. I think I remember seeing him pitch in relief for the Rangers a couple of years ago. According to the only scouting reports I could find, he has an above average fastball with two serviceable offspeed offerings. He apparently lost the feel for his breaking pitch this year and gave up a ton of hits, more than he has per nine in any previous season, perhaps because he was relying too heavily on his fastball?
Do you think the front office is content with the pitching depth we currently have ? Is this a prelude to another move to either pick up a salary dump like Blanton or Dempster or to sign a guy like Pavano? I have a feeling any pitching related moves from here out are going to be like this - minor league players that provide depth and may or may not contribute at the major league level.
