It's completely pathetic that we even have to think about this:
The most important point – there is no mandatory power reduction after sundown. Let’s state that again for emphasis – THERE IS NO MANDATORY POWER REDUCTION AFTER SUNDOWN.
I’m for any station that allows me to listen to the A’s in Davis and past 8:00 pm.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
Are you in Davis currently?
I had problems getting CSN-CA there until last year, when I finally got it. It would be great to get radio too.
"Loyal? I'm the most loyal player money can buy." - Don Sutton
Yeah, I don't know about CSNCA cause I don't have cable.
But I know 860 is pretty listenable during the day but becomes completely unlistenable by 8:30pm. I’d shell out for MLB.tv if it weren’t for the blackout restrictions. Basically, gameday audio is a must for me.

All this sounds good to me, especially if they have precedence over Sharks games.

or...
In case of conflict, they could broadcast the Sharks on 98.5, and the A’s on 102.1.
My guess is that there would be a limited number of conflicts, especially this season since the Sharks don’t look strong enough at present to make a run deep into the playoffs.
Now there's nothing left to say, so let's go drink beer.
Love it!
I hear G’nats fans brag that they can hear knbr in oregon, nevada, and socal. too ashamed to tell them that I can’t listen to a game while living in campbell. More than a new stadium, the A’s need a listenable radio station!
Here here!
The A’s radio hopscotch has got to end. They need to cut a deal with a staple of the Bay Area market that has a decent transmitter. It’s far past time.

This would be awesome, but I have one small point
There’s no way 98.5 stretches to Sacramento. It gets hazy around the Carquinez Bridge because 98 Rock in Sacramento starts butting heads with it.

don't the A's have a radio affiliate in Sacramento?

The post is mainly for the Bay Area
Sacramento would need its own affiliate, if they don’t already have one.
Now there's nothing left to say, so let's go drink beer.
This is great, doctorK
I really hope Lew Wolff (or his people) really keep abreast of AN stuff. In fact, I hope people link the hell out of this post. This is the best solution I’ve heard of to solve the radio problems.

I agree
since, according to Blez and others, Wolff browses the site not so infrequently, it would be good for this to be brought to his attention. It’s a very good idea and would make the listening experience SO MUCH more enjoyable! Maybe Blez, or someone else, could email this too him.

Even if the A's can't fix the radio station problem.
They should simulcast on the Internet like thousands of other radio stations already do. They can also make an iPhone/android app to get the station. This way anyone with the Internet or an iPhone, all over the world, can listen.
I think MLB might say "No."
I don’t think stations can feed their MLB gamecasts online.
"As the tag line of my favorite dirty joke would have it: 'Keep your hat on. We could wind up miles from here.'" ~Kurt Vonnegut, Hocus Pocus
indeed
KTRB can be streamed online normally during the season — EXCEPT during A’s games. The MLB iPhone/Android app is great, though, and last year it included all game audio streams.

Yes, the MLB At Bat app is well worth the money spent on it.
It works through the playoffs, and I could listen to the early games from the office where a radio signal is too weak to penetrate.
by LoneStranger on Jan 26, 2011 9:38 AM PST up reply actions
Yup
I don’t think anyone legally streams their games online; during baseball games, radio stations that do stream just switch to talk radio or something.
by Rebuilding Season on Jan 26, 2011 9:52 AM PST up reply actions
Even if the game is blacked out online.
It would give the fans a chance to listen to pregame/postgame, and analysis and such.
they can.
its just the games that MLB blacks out.
$25 gets you the package of all teams, andf another $25 or so for the smart phone app.

IN 2011 The Number of Night Games Are..
… 57 out of 162 games that begin after 6 pm PST. Many of those games in June through August will be heard almost in their entirety. If the A’s persue buying the station, let’s hope they can work on improving their night signal if they can make a deal with the station that uses the same wavelength. I thought I read the station is in Denver.
They started a good thing last year with KTRB, let’s hope they can improve upon it.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind too much if they lost KTRB.
I do think there are some great advantages to owning their own station, and it would be great to see it grow. But really, I don’t care what they do or where they go (assuming they’re trying to make things better) as long as they keep Chris Townsend.

I think buying a terrestrial station in 2011 is a bit of a folly

KTRB comes in fine in SF, even for night games.
I realize SF is not really what the A’s are going for. But at least I have been able to listen to games (much better than when it was on the old station).
That was usually the case during the season for sure
But right now the station seems to be completely off the air after sundown. Maybe that’s because of the receivership situation.
by Glorious Mundy on Jan 26, 2011 10:20 AM PST up reply actions
Yea, it's not on the air all the time.
by LoneStranger on Jan 26, 2011 10:31 AM PST up reply actions
good point
I totally am not listening to the station right now with no A’s games.
by Billy Frijoles on Jan 27, 2011 2:49 PM PST up reply actions
I listened to it last Thursday when I did my drive to San Bernardino.
Even battling power lines, It came in well enough to listen to all the way down I5 to Buttonwillow. After that, it kinda dropped out fast. I tried to listen to it on the TuneIn Radio app on the iPhone, but apparently they don’t do their internet stream anymore.

Talking to our beloved CT last night
The A’s are no closer to buying the station. And if they don’t, we won’t have CT and the pre and post game hosted by him. THAT would be sad.
I have abandonment issues. Thanks Lew.
I'm assuming that means we wouldn't have pre and post game shows....
Since if we did, the A’s could hire him to do said shows.

Booo to the KUSF stuff, they (used to) get me out of the city on my commute.
I think pursuing this as part of a contract for services are fine, I think that in 10 years, though, terrestrial radio will not be a viable business. Kinda like newspapers, fine for a niche, but not for “broadcasting.”
Question: Why are transmitters located in places that was 1/4 to 1/2 the signal strength on the the ocean?

FM stations are received on a line-of-sight basis
Those odd shapes on the radio coverage maps (especially the K-Fox one) are due mainly to the terrain. For the best transmission, the best thing to do would be to place the transmitter on the highest points in the area, like Mt Tam, Mt Diablo, and Mt Hamilton. Of course, other factors may prevent siting the transmitters there, so people then make choices that compromise the transmission. For example, in the KFDC map, there is a divot in the coverage to the northwest of the transmitter tower location (the red plus sign). This is most likely due to Mt Tam being in the way of the signal. Also, even though the map shows great coverage of K-Fox from San Jose all the way to Santa Cruz, I can tell you for a fact that the K-Fox signal drops out just beyond the summit of highway 17, and doesn’t pick up very well until around Scotts Valley. This also affects AM stations during the day time – KNBR is very weak going across highway 17 from Santa Cruz until you get to the other side of the summit, and KTRB is non-existent. The signal extends out farther across the ocean simply because there is nothing in the way.
Now there's nothing left to say, so let's go drink beer.
SuSlu just tweeted
The #Athletics will announce tomorrow that they will be on KTRB again this year. Station ownership issues won’t be resolved for some time.

The #Athletics remain the best bet to get ownership of KTRB but the legal process is a long one with the station in receivership.

It is being rumored that the A's will make an announcement tomorrow...
I think that the A’s are going to end up purchasing KTRB and getting it fixed so it is viable! This is great news for us as fans and for the A’s in general if it is in fact what really happens.

I think the only guarantee of CT returning is if the A's buy the station. Any other ownership might chop the pre and post game shows.
I think the only reason that they can announce the games will be on KTRB this year is because the bank is going to honor the existing game contract, or force the new owners, whoever that is, honor it.

yeah LS
CT will be back and doing the same thing as last year, only better. Things will continue as last season until someone — most probably the team — buys it, and then the real fun will begin. Stay tuned, literally & figuratively.

KTRB may be a ramshackle vehicle
But it beats the hell out of walking and it’ll get you where you’re going, especially if — once it’s out of receivership and added to the A’s brand-making assets — they start to take it a lot more seriously and as part of themselves rather than it’s own, completely messed up thing. Once the A’s buy it I’d have to believe that clown-time will be over and they will begin to reorient it to become a viable broadcast entity in line with an MLB-worthy product.
Best part right now is that, at the least, we get to build what we helped start on the postgame program and make it even more riveting than it was last time around in 2010, a year in which — despite all the hangups and technical BS — great and positive strides were made in terms of the A’s radio presence and the interest it can generate.
I just talked to Chris and he’s ready to take it to the next level, with all of us here aiding and abetting him as only Athletics Nation can do. This is one more step along the road to where we want to take this and I think this will be a wild and productive year, and in ways that none of us can, perhaps, imagine.

A's in Sacramento
It was on 1380AM, but only on weeknights and weekends. Which wasn’t much of a problem since 860am is strong in the area during the day and it’s possible to listen to terrestial radio on those “No TV” games.
But it’d be nice to hear the A’s on FM radio again with spectacular stereo sound.

I loved it when Byrnes would call in their morning show on Thursdays.
Except sometimes it would take them an hour to track him down and he’d do calls while lying in the hotel bed, half asleep.

two years ago, KFRC-FM was at 106.9
After the baseball season, KFRC-FM was sold to KCBS, so the FM station now plays 24 hour news and traffic reports.
