People went nuts when they came onscreen

in their movie, “A Hard Day’s Night”.

I didn’t go, but a buddy of mine went to the first showing. It was 95% female teenagers (under 17) and when the Beatles bounded onscreen, the crowd in the theater shrieked like banshees, so loud that my friend covered his ears. The movie stopped, the lights came up, and the manager announced that the movie would not continue, unless everyone stayed seated, and NO SCREAMING!!

I don’t know if he screamed that last part.

It helped a little. Still plenty of tearful shrieking through the first half of the movie, so reported. It was a mediocre movie, but who cared?

Yes

First, DC5 were just an ordinary pop group. They’re not remotely at the same level as the Kinks or the Beatles.

The Kinks were very, very different from the Beatles. Wilder at first, much, much worse management, and a completely different musical sensibility from the Beatles.

What set them apart for me is the four part harmonies. As a kid – they were one of the first groups I really listened to on my own. For other groups – it was music in my older siblings worlds that I was exposed to.

OK.

I’m blaming them for the dominance of guitars in popular music. I recognize that this is unfair and that trend started before the Beatles and would have continued without them regardless, so it can’t really be attributed to them. But I think the Beatles represent that movement and it’s a movement that I don’t care for.

I don’t mean that as a factual argument that can be called true or false; just my own aesthetic opinion.

That said, I do like a few Beatles songs, and I don’t hate all guitar bands.

But if the orchestra and swing band weren’t dead it wouldn’t be necessary to “implement” a violin or a clarinet.

Meh

Pop music evolves and changes. Was swing really going to be the leading genre of popular music in the mid-1960s?

Mind you, the Beatles managed to do this largely because they had unlimited resources based on how much money they made, a supportive producer, and John Lennon, who loved tinkering around with that stuff. But other bands did stuff with the resources they had, too.

But he thought it would die out

(turned out he did before it did, sadly) and by the early 60s the in thing was Motown and Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound, which weren’t mainly about guitars.

The Beatles were one of the bands that brought them back, from kids in England who loved listening to obscure American blues records. They spearheaded the British Invasion, but blaming them for guitar pop seems to be giving them way too much credit for a wider historical trend.

I don't feel like the A's have abused his arm or anything

But I’d be happier if he hit 190 innings than if he hit 210.

I’m telling you Mazzaro would be a solid #5 for a lot of teams.

Use the height tag

after the close-quote after the url, hit the space bar and type height=250>. Or 300 or 200 if the size looks better that way. Then preview it.
