Thanks to another homerun by Coco Crisp, the A's have closed the gap to 3-2. We're going to the sixth inning...A's need to tie the game.

If he holds at 3B, it’s a 5-4-3 DP, runner on 3rd 2 out. 1st and 2nd 1 out is a better situation for the A’s.

People went nuts when they came onscreen
in their movie, “A Hard Day’s Night”.
I didn’t go, but a buddy of mine went to the first showing. It was 95% female teenagers (under 17) and when the Beatles bounded onscreen, the crowd in the theater shrieked like banshees, so loud that my friend covered his ears. The movie stopped, the lights came up, and the manager announced that the movie would not continue, unless everyone stayed seated, and NO SCREAMING!!
I don’t know if he screamed that last part.
It helped a little. Still plenty of tearful shrieking through the first half of the movie, so reported. It was a mediocre movie, but who cared?

I sort of agree.
I have tons of respect for them and what they did for music, but I have never in my life sought out Beatles music. I usually won’t go out of my way to avoid them, but they just don’t do it for me.

Indeed, because they were the cream of the crop
(and, incidentally, all three students of Nadia Boulanger), but they didn’t set the direction of the mainstream of popular music, and there aren’t thousands of songwriters following in their style.

this is a good question.....as for me....I liked them much better than elvis and the four letterman etc.
compared to the other pop acts of the time they were very different.

Were they that different from the Kinks or Dave Clark Five?

Yes
First, DC5 were just an ordinary pop group. They’re not remotely at the same level as the Kinks or the Beatles.
The Kinks were very, very different from the Beatles. Wilder at first, much, much worse management, and a completely different musical sensibility from the Beatles.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
Well sure, everyone's unique.
The question is whether the difference between Beatles and Kinks was greater than Kinks and anyone else.

I'm not sure how I'd measure that
But DC5 don’t belong in that discussion, any way you try to measure it.

I sort of see them as the wave of 60s new style music groups. Animals, Kinks, DCF, Stones, Beatles
What set them apart for me is the four part harmonies. As a kid – they were one of the first groups I really listened to on my own. For other groups – it was music in my older siblings worlds that I was exposed to.

AN: Where you will be an A's fan or Dallas Braden will show you the repercussions of your actions.
by stranahanahan on Sep 8, 2010 9:04 PM PDT up reply actions
OK.
I’m blaming them for the dominance of guitars in popular music. I recognize that this is unfair and that trend started before the Beatles and would have continued without them regardless, so it can’t really be attributed to them. But I think the Beatles represent that movement and it’s a movement that I don’t care for.
I don’t mean that as a factual argument that can be called true or false; just my own aesthetic opinion.
That said, I do like a few Beatles songs, and I don’t hate all guitar bands.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
The Beatles are pretty heavily responsible for implementing other instruments in pop music
AN: Where you will be an A's fan or Dallas Braden will show you the repercussions of your actions.
by stranahanahan on Sep 8, 2010 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions
That's true.
I’ll give them some credit for that.
But if the orchestra and swing band weren’t dead it wouldn’t be necessary to “implement” a violin or a clarinet.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
Meh
Pop music evolves and changes. Was swing really going to be the leading genre of popular music in the mid-1960s?
Mind you, the Beatles managed to do this largely because they had unlimited resources based on how much money they made, a supportive producer, and John Lennon, who loved tinkering around with that stuff. But other bands did stuff with the resources they had, too.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
Yeah, I know.
I think I already acknowledged it was happening anyway.
When I “blame” the Beatles, I don’t really mean that things would be different were it not for them. Obviously it’s a much larger trend than that, ultimately connected to the development of recording and amplification technology.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
So they represent a trend that you don't like

vocal traditions than rock and pop. (Where “better” = “I like better”.)

I've been watching a lot of youtubes of Jerry Lee Lewis's rock and country performances lately
He belongs in both traditions. How do you feel about him as a vocalist?

what about Santana? I think his guitar work is incredibly melodic. Not the norm - but there are examples of artists and their ability in this makes them special
"Are those new tarps? Or did they paint 'em?" Mark Ellis
He's melodic in the same way that a
Chopin piano piece is. The essential element here is that on a guitar or piano, in contrast to most other instruments, any note once struck can only decay.
I do appreciate the great guitarists, but it doesn’t change my feeling about the musical style over all.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
becasue they are struck?? vs. bowed or blown?
"Are those new tarps? Or did they paint 'em?" Mark Ellis

Buddy holly started the whole guitar thing i thought
Why do they make Pokemon so sexy?
But he thought it would die out
(turned out he did before it did, sadly) and by the early 60s the in thing was Motown and Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound, which weren’t mainly about guitars.
The Beatles were one of the bands that brought them back, from kids in England who loved listening to obscure American blues records. They spearheaded the British Invasion, but blaming them for guitar pop seems to be giving them way too much credit for a wider historical trend.
