Carson and Crisp Lead A's to Easy Win Over the M's
Stranger things have happened, folks. And with two more games against a team that can’t score? Hope has crept back into the picture.
Look, I was one of those guys who had conceded this race as a non-race a long time ago. Well, I’ve changed my mind. And no Pam, it’s not the Jack and Coke talking.
Exactly 25 games left and seven to make up. Yeah, it’s a long shot. No need to have majored in magic numbers to figure that one out. But whatever.
Coco Crisp jumped on the second pitch of the bottom of the first for a home run to give the A’s a 1-0 lead. Two batters later it was 2-love (obligatory tennis reference) after Daric Barton tripled and scored on a ground ball out by Kurt Suzuki.
The quick runs were part of an eventful first inning in which Matt Carson made a sensational diving catch, and (Kurt) Suzuki threw out (Ichiro) Suzuki on a strike-‘em-out-throw-‘em-out double play.
That turned out to be plenty of support for Brett Anderson- just one less run than they scored for him in his previous five outings- who allowed just four hits and one run in 7.2 innings of work, while striking out four and walking none.
For the Mariners, it is the eleventh straight game that they have scored three runs or less.
Two more such showings and they will set a club record for offensive futility.
And maybe, just maybe, make this thing a race after all.

the mariners have no fight in them when felix isn't pitching
i hope they don’t play too many games against the rangers in the next month.

I'm not sure they have any fight when he's pitching either
He’s just too good

until 2014 unless they trade him in a massive rebuilding
(Which is unlikely)

Although they really, really should do that.
They have one elite prospect. His name is Dustin Ackley. Although some guys will rebound, most probably won’t, and Ichiro is aging.
Getting a package that should easily be better than what the A’s got for Haren for Felix is the absolute best thing they can do.
Needs moar dingerz.
Justin Smoak isn't as good as Ackley or at least on his level?

Technically he's not considered a prospect anymore
but that’s pedantic. They absolutely have more than one elite prospect. In addition to Ackley and (maybe— I’m not totally sold on him at this point actually) Smoak, they have Michael Pineda, who is far better than any A’s ’spect right now.
That’s not to say rebuilding isn’t in order— they’re a good ways from contention at the MLB level and selling off some of their non-Felix assets could speed them back to competitiveness a lot quicker. The problem is that most of those assets are pretty worthless right now— who wants Jose Lopez?

They also have Greg Halman who's doing pretty well in the PCL at 22
He’s also walking a fairly respectable amount although his K’s are off the charts. He’s also Dutch and has only recently heard of baseball so that’s a plus.

Eh
Halman is garbage. He’ll run out of options long before he learns how to play baseball.

I was fully prepared to defend his talent until I saw
169 K’s in 113 games! That is disgusting
His MLE is very, very poor.
MLB pitchers will eat him up. He’d easily surpass the MLB strikeout record at the rate he’s going over a full season.

Given his likely whiff rate, walk rate, and BABIP in the majors
he’d have to hit like 40 HR a season to be an average offensive player.
It’s really ridiculous.

I'll probably be seeing Ackley Wednesday night when Tacoma and Sacramento start their playoff series
I saw Pineda earlier in the year and was very impressed.

That might be the worst thing about the M's performance this season
If a team can suck so badly that they drain the life out of LL, that team has done a terrible disservice to the baseball community.

Even I, who said a month ago the race was essentially over,
would concede that 18-7 might get it done. But can this offense go 18-7? Probably not. Is it possible? Sure.

So my man Carson makes a great play in the outfield and hits a HR! MVP! MVP! Seriously (or maybe not), we have the Rangers right where we want them——ahead of us, but hearing footsteps. Yeah, gotta love it!

The Rangers' best friend is Father Time
If the season ended November 3rd, Texas would be in trouble.

Maybe. Maybe not.
If the season ended November 3rd, Cliff Lee might/would have regained his form. Josh Hamilton would definitely still be a factor for the team, whereas he might stand to miss a pretty crucial stretch for them.

A's don't need to go 20-5
They need the Rangers to slump at the rate of 5-9 in their next 14 (Toronto, New York, Detroit (2), Seattle, Angels) while we go 9-5 over the same period (Seattle, Boston, KC, Minn., Chicago). At that point we’d be 3 games out with Texas coming in for 4 games. We win three of those and we’re one game out with 7 games to play.
That’s the best scenario that I can come up with. It’s not entirely unrealistic that the Rangers will go 5-9. It’s the A’s going 9-5 that has me most doubtful, though I see us winning the next two games.
We need to go 16-9; they need to go 9-16. That’s how I see it.
The smaller the sample,
the more likely it is a team will play .640 ball or .360 ball, so it’s not outrageous to hope — especially with 4 of those being head-to-head.
Then I see the lineup with Suzuki #3 and Kouz or Ellis #5 and I think, “Well…ok, probably not.” But who knows?

if the a's reach the playoffs this year

Geren's tenure as manager is not tied to success.
He will be the manager as long as Billy is the GM. When Billy goes, Geren goes about a year or two later.

I could see the Rangers being swept through Detroit.
During which timewe get both the M’s and Royals. By Monday we should know whether we’re dreaming or not. Until then, meh, best not to get carried away.

I don't know guys, when was the last time we reached 6 games behing Texas?
It seems we’ve been at 7 once every month but we cant get any closer.
Loving the wins though.
Who did we get for Aaron Cunningham btw?
he’s not doing too bad in the time he’s gotten in San Diego, SSS and all.
Vin Mazzaro sent down!
A player being sent down in September? And this is supposed to help him?
pitching in the PCL playoffs
will help him, yes that’s a fair assumption. Big games, pressure situations, no negative impact on the last-ditch effort of the big club to win the division.

At the most he'll get two starts out of that, I'm figuring
There’s not a whole lot of consistency he’s going to be able to get out of that, but if the A’s really believe they still have a shot at the division and they see Mazzaro hurting their chances, then there you have it.

I Dunno
Two bad games in a row and he’s gone? That’s really cold.
two awful games in a row, sure
but over his last 8 games, mazzaro has pitched 45 innings and allowed 34 runs, that’s 6.8 runs per 9 innings. given our offense, we can’t win games with that kind of pitching, and unsurprisingly we haven’t been:
in that 8 game span mazzaro is 0-6 and the a’s are 1-7.
if the goal is to chase down the rangers that’s not going to get it done.

The Glass is Half Full, Oakland
I’m not even an A’s fan and I wrote about how I think the A’s are still in it on my Blog today
Can anyone tell me why...
They are not bringing up Dallas MacPherson? Seems like we may need a third baseman. He does have some power, but he does strike out. Could not be much worse than Jack "K"ust.
