DLD - Labor Day Weekend Edition

Time once again to root for the green and gold. No, not your entrenched-in-second-place A's. I'm talking about these dudes:

Alright, most of you non-NRAF types are probably rooting for some team without a quarterback, a team now sans one jilted Heisman-deserving running back, a team that got torn up like a Kleenex at a snot party by Hawai'i, or a team coached by a man named Neuweasel. But today, let's put aside our differences and celebrate one of the greatest events of the year-- the first Saturday of the college football season.

No CFB related post would be complete without a shout-out to EDSBS, which I will continue to tout as the finest source of sports-related entertainment (outside of these friendly confines) on the internets.

Alright, alright. You want baseball links? Cripes, but you're demanding. This is a free service, y'know.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAH STEPHEN STRASBURG'S GONNA DIE!

Also, this is sort of old, but someone needs to help this kid out.

We have a new new guy. Go read Oaklanda12's post about it. (ohnoyoudi'int) Oh yes I did just link to our own site.

Vote for Bill King!

It appears that Tom Cheek is running away with the Fan voting… He is getting like triple or quadruple the number of fan votes as anyone is else is receiving, and from what i can tell from the results each day it appears that Bill King is teh second choice amongst the fans and everyone else is way behind. I was looking at the profiles that they have posted on Facebook for each anouncer.

Bill King’s bio is wrong on the site, it says that he retired from broadcasting in 2005, here is the bio from the Facebook page:

BILL KING: 25 years (A’s. 1981-2005), all with the A’s as the lead radio play-by-play man, and retired…Has spent five decades thrilling fans with his vivid descriptions of some of the most historical moments in the annals of three of the Bay Area’s major sports franchises – the San Francisco/Golden State Warriors, the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders and the A’s…Was stationed on the island of Guam at the end of World War II when he began his broadcasting career with the Armed Forces Radio Network…Launched his sportscasting career in the late 1940’s in Pekin, Ill., broadcasting minor league baseball, along with high school football and basketball games…Passed away Oct. 18, 2005.

Apparantly his number one competion is this guy, Tom Cheek, who appears to be running away with the fan voting, here is his bio from the site:

TOM CHEEK: 31 years (Expos, 1974-76; Blue Jays, 1977-2004) and retired…Spent the final 28 years of his career with the Blue Jays as radio play-by-play man…When forced to retire during the 2004 season because of a brain tumor, was the only person to had worked every Blue Jays game…Broadcast for the Baseball Network, 1994-95…Called many post season games on Canada radio for Telemedia…Play-by-play experience includes baseball, basketball, football and hockey for the University of Vermont…From 1974 to 1976 was the swing man on Montreal Expos radio broadcasts on television nights…Member of the broadcast team for ABC Sports at the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid and 1984 Olympics at Sarajevo…Has broadcast college basketball for Mutual Radio Network…Passed away Oct. 9, 2005.

I’m trying to figure out how this guy is getting so many fan votes….

There is no A in OFFENSE!!

by wacchampions on Sep 5, 2010 2:03 AM PDT reply actions

I would guess Cheek campaigners are appealing to Canadian national pride, which is fair enough

The brain tumor may be a sympathetic story too, which is why their error about Bill “retiring” (good catch, BTW) should be corrected because his story is equally compelling. Bill was 79 years old and certainly more than eligible for retirement even before 2005. If he’d retired, he would have been given a special day and all kinds of hoopla (which I’m sure he would have hated). Instead, he worked — in some pain, I imagine, and missing some roadtrips during 2005 (other than the one he always chose to miss) — and scheduled his hip surgery for the beginning of the offseason so he could be recovered in time for spring. He couldn’t have demonstrated any more commitment to the game and the audience.

quote from david forst on mazzaro...ouch

from the oakland athletics mlb article by jane lee

Mazzaro is 0-6 with a 5.60 ERA and a .284 opponents’ batting average in his past eight starts, four of them quality starts that brought about six runs in a combined 25 1/3 innings but limited run support. Three of them, though, saw Mazzaro surrender five runs or more in less than six innings — much of which can be attributed to his command struggles.

“He doesn’t pitch ahead in the count, and he kind of lets the hitter dictate what he’s doing,” A’s assistant general manager David Forst said. “He just didn’t have the same command he did earlier in the year. His stuff was good, he got ahead, he was able to use his slider to put hitters away. Just recently, he’s had a lot of 2-1, 3-1 counts, and he can’t pitch from behind like that.”

The transaction, Forst confirmed, was specifically meant to aid all involved — Mazzaro included.

“More than anything, it was about his struggles over the last six weeks,” he said. "The move was designed to give him the work that he needs and, at the same time, give us the best chance to win every five days. Those guys are out there doing what they can to win as many games as possible.

“Vin just hasn’t pitched well his past few times out, and it wasn’t going to make sense to send him to the bullpen. He wouldn’t get much work there, so the best thing was for him to pitch every five days in the Minor Leagues and try to get some of that consistency and command back.”

by stm72 on Sep 7, 2010 10:11 AM PDT up reply actions

And we won't need a 5th starter until mid-next week. So one replacement starter

and the Vin steps in after two minor league “get his shit together” starts in AAA.

Okay, old television, aimed primarily at Mike V and danbot.

Mike V. – Deadwood is absolutely amazing and only gets better upon repeated viewings. It’s Shakespeare in a western with cocksucker thrown in. Al Swearengen is the best television character ever. EVER. And quite frankly, second is a good distance back.

Danbot – Took the downtime to re-watch all 33 episodes of Breaking Bad. Upon reflection, the cousins storyline from the third season is kind of contrived and action movie-esque. It’s a frustrating season as they seem to also borrow liberally from Sopranos storylines. However, the last two episodes are incredibly strong. The combination of Mike the Cleaner, Gus “Pollo Locco” Fring, and Gale the Libertarian Geek make such a powerful combination of complementary characters, that the plot can’t help but be helped. The plot however is excellent, and the homage to 70s cop shows with Mike the Cleaner’s scene at the chemical plant is amazing.

Peter Gammons ran over his puppy. But that wasn’t the worst part. He then proceeded to back over it too. Then rolled forward again (#3), rolled down the window and said, "What are you going to do about it, kid? I’m Peter F**king Gammons, b**ch." Then drove away. -d to the moas

Hrm. I really should get Netflix.

There are a bunch of shows that I’d like to watch. Rome, The Tudors, and then there are things like Deadwood people say I need to watch. Maybe if the new shows this fall suck balls, I’ll get Netflix. Plus, with no baseball there is more time during the week to watch.

Yeah, aside from the Cousins, I thought all of the rest of season 3 of Breaking Bad was stellar.

Gus Fring and Mike the Cleaner are amazing amazing characters. And I have no idea how they did this, but they turned one of the characters that seemed, at best, flat and uninteresting, and at worst, annoying, into one of the strongest characters on the show: Hank. I love Hank now.

You know, the strange thing is I kind of know him.

We were friends with some people when I lived in Lafayette, one of whom was either married or engaged to the actor, Dean Norris. At the time, he had been in Lethal Weapon 2 and Terminator 2, both where he had some face time and not a lot of lines, but was recognizable.

Flash forward 20 years and here he is. It was freaky when I realized it was the same guy.

Any Klosterman fans? (keeping w/sirbed's theme)

It is 1933. You are in Berlin, Germany. Somehow you find yourself in position to effortlessly steal Adolf Hitler’s wallet. This theft will not affect Hitler’s rise to power, the nature of World War II, or the Holocaust. There are no important papers in the wallet, but the act will cost Hitler forty Reichsmarks and completely ruin his evening. You do not need the money. The odds that you will be caught are less than 2% but if caught you will be executed. Are you ethically obligated to steal Hitler’s wallet?

And I’d also take them over Texas. I don’t mean that just based off of blowing New Mexico out, either. I think they’re straight up better on paper, too.

I also think Stanford is pretty laughably low. Arizona will be back in the rankings before too long, but Oregon State is gonna have a tough row to hoe this year, methinks. Murderous OOC schedule and a really raw QB.

Not to say that it’s all the UAW’s fault, but they essentially colluded with ownership to produce terrible cars and kill the environment for about 30 years longer than that was a sustainable business model.

Fine. I think by now you've already read this. MAD MEN SPOILER (don't read sirbed/attijah)

Dan – following up on one of my earlier points re: Don… good catch here too:

link is here

Here’s the quote—
Another interesting aspect is Don rooting for "methodical" Sonny Liston and not the name-changing Ali. "Moo-hammad Ali," he scoffs as his eyes roll. In the opening scene, new Art Director Stan says "I was just saying Clay would make one hell of an ad man."

Didn’t even think about the "name-changing" part but of course that’s relevant. He’s rooting against the person in the allegory that represents himself.

That's pam. "classy enough." -whiteshoes40

by pam5981 on Sep 7, 2010 4:05 PM PDT up reply actions

.

That’s an awesome idea. Never crossed my mind. I know Don is slightly more open about his past now, but still, the name changing thing could have subconsciously influenced that.

But I was thinking…Don’s not really like Ali at all. Don’s all about keeping a cool, calm, focused facade on the outside. He’s not the fanciful showman that Ali was.

by danmerqury on Sep 7, 2010 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmm.

I totally see him as the fanciful showman. That’s his whole facade. He’s often not methodical about his work. Sometimes he has one (or no) great ideas – see the LIFE cereal pitch – and then he’s just throwing out ideas to see if one of them sticks… in a total frenzy.

I just think it’s more symbolic of the fact that he’s no longer 100% committed to being Don Draper.

The other thing that keeps sticking out to me — Don’s line: “There’s more than one way out of this room.” when Peggy squeals at the mouse and he’s down on the floor looking for it. I don’t know what it means but it feels like it should be significant.

That's pam. "classy enough." -whiteshoes40

by pam5981 on Sep 7, 2010 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Interesting.

Hmm. You may be right about that (…I know, I know, shut up.). But he’s certainly slipping in terms of his Don/Dick facade, either willfully or not. Peggy is basically in his inner circle now, and the thought of Peggy knowing everything was completely out of the question even just a year ago. Or three episodes ago.

And that line he said when looking for the mouse…I didn’t connect to anything at all. But you’re right (…..), there’s likely something to it…I just don’t know what. Perhaps Peggy took that to mean that leaving SCDP with Duck isn’t the only option? I don’t know. I’m just throwing out ideas.

and got bored easily in classes that I “had” to take. So, yeah, it helped a lot and made the classes go by easier.

depends on your major

In science, it’s all but worthless to attend classes unless there are molecular structures bring written on the board. Time is better spent reading the book, unless the prof specifically says “what I’m going to lecture on isn’t in the book but will be on the test”

I think politics and econ are also more bullshitable.

There isn’t really a true answer to most questions.

What we’re asking is for people to stop pretending that ipse dixit counts as a "source." When you make a claim about baseball, you should be willing to put some reasonable amount of effort into explaining why it’s correct if someone asks you to. That’s basic respect for the other poster. - PT

"Science" is pretty broad...

But I didn’t read the text books at all other than finding the relevant formulas for doing homework. I don’t know anybody who did the assigned reading. I got the other non-formula information from listening in class (I also didn’t really take notes, but I wouldn’t recommend that strategy to other people)

Can we just stop this

1rst it never was “not nice.”

2nd if it was taking it to another thread to complain about people is far far far more childish and immature than what ever could have possibly said in thread. Dan you’re a moderator and Pam youre a long time user, you should have better etiquette than this. If you don’t like something and its a violation of the rules, flag it, and let the system work.

3rd this is the kind of crap that leads there to being a divide on AN, running back to your DLD/gamethread/CT thread commenters club to complain about people that aren’t in it. If you have a problem with someone, you should tell them. If they want to change they will. If they don’t and theyre violating the rules, theyll get banned. If they are obeying the rules lump it or go away, just like everybody else lumps things that you do that annoy them that don’t violate the rules.

What we’re asking is for people to stop pretending that ipse dixit counts as a "source." When you make a claim about baseball, you should be willing to put some reasonable amount of effort into explaining why it’s correct if someone asks you to. That’s basic respect for the other poster. - PT

Some of us are just here to have fun and not debate every little thing

I know you like to debate which is fine but it’s not what many of us want to do.

The CT threads are a place where we hardly even talk about baseball and no one is there to debate sabermetrics and there should be room for that on AN.

One last thing….I really don’t like it when you talk about Dan and Pam not using the proper etiquette. You shouldn’t be throwing stones.

But seriously,folks....

But seriously,folks....

by sirbed on Sep 7, 2010 6:09 PM PDT up reply actions

It has absolutely nothing to to with whether you like debate or not.

I never said that you shouldn’t have CT threads, in fact I wholeheartedly applaud their creation. What I said was that there was a thread for people that wanted to debate trade proposals and Pam and Dan are over here complaining that debate goes on in debate threads for the second time in like a month. Im not over in stat thread complaining about your innuendos or what not with PT. The kind of behavior Pam and Dan are displaying further fractures AN by creating cliques and antagonism between them. If they don’t like to debate things thats fine, ignore the debate threads just like I ignore the game threads or the CT threads.

Furthermore, Im not sure why you think that Pam and Dan are exempt from criticism of their behavior when you clearly have no problem with them starting an entire unrelated subthread complaining about people behind their backs. Its lacking in class to basically be talking behind peoples backs like you did a couple of weeks ago and Pam and Dan are doing here. Nowhere have I said or will ever say I say Im above reproach, but I never badmouth people behind their backs, and Im following my own advice and saying something directly to the people involved before I start flagging it.

I guess your ego is so big you thought that what I posted a few weeks back was only about you

I’m not sure how posting something in a DLD is going behind someones back but hey whatever….i’d say more but frankly you aren’t worth it.

But seriously,folks....

by sirbed on Sep 7, 2010 6:42 PM PDT up reply actions

um where did I say it was about me? I didn't, you denigrated "AN intellectuals" not me specifically

and its posting behind someones back because its not posting it on their comments in a place they are far far less likely to read (hear), which also makes any criticism not effective in getting behavior to change.

What we’re asking is for people to stop pretending that ipse dixit counts as a "source." When you make a claim about baseball, you should be willing to put some reasonable amount of effort into explaining why it’s correct if someone asks you to. That’s basic respect for the other poster. - PT

No one expects the chippier debaters to change, for one

For two, expressing one’s opinion about the discourse taking place in another thread doesn’t necessarily carry the vindictiveness implied in “talking behind someone’s back.” How thin-skinned are people going to be?

I'm most definitely not complaining that debate goes on in the debate threads.

I’m complaining that ugly personal attacks go on in the debate threads. I was mainly thinking of some of the comments that were directed towards you when I said that. And I truly doubt that complaining creates cliques and antagonism—I’d say that the atmosphere created by many of the “regular” debate thread debaters is far and away the root cause of any perceived clique or antagonism on this site.

And furthermore, I don’t even feel like I went behind anyone’s back anyway. It’s not like I was in the DLD or CT thread badmouthing specific people where I knew they wouldn’t look. I was commenting on the general atmosphere in threads like the Colby Rasmus thread, not piling dirt on any specific person. If you took that as a slight directed at you, then I apologize.

I was mainly thinking of some of the comments that were directed towards you when I said that.

The comments that were directed at me weren’t worse that what was said in the last DLD that had a subthread like this and were handled in a perfectly acceptable manner IMO. A poster played fast and loose with the facts and I called them out, they got angry and called me names and got flagged… the system worked, who cares?

Excuse me if I step in for a second into an argument I have no part in, but from my experience with BTF, it’s usually best to try to keep some of the meta stuff in email. Otherwise, observers start to get involved and eventually pick a side and the arguing just gets worse until everyone’s pissed at each other.

Generally, I would agree with this, except its gotten to that point already and so now I think transparency is most important since everyone has already taken sides.

After these last 2 efforts, they’re pretty bad now. Bands I’ve liked better have gone this route before, but at least the Foo Fighters gave me 4 or 5 pretty damn good albums before thoroughly disappointing me.
