A's Sign Hermida
I have always liked Hermida. Seems like another low-risk, high reward situation. Maybe he'll find his swing a-la Carlos Pena of the Rays.

That .203 BA is terrible, but he wasn't really that terrible on the Marlins...Was he?

"Dan Johnson did it"
I was hoping they'd acquire him when the Red Sox designated him for assignment
I love this move. It might ultimately result in nothing, but this is one of those good Beane moves that could pay off huge. Worst case scenario, he’s still bad and they get rid of him.
What I don’t understand is sending him to Sacramento.

since they already did Sept call-ups can he BE on the 40 man?
"Are those new tarps? Or did they paint 'em?" Mark Ellis
Why not? Just DFA somebody and add him.

like that one pitcher whose name i don't remember
A's v Giants "is kind of like the difference between going to see the Ramones and going to see the Bee Gees. A's fans will go see the Ramones."

He can, but he'd be ineligible for the postseason.
So, you know, big reason right there.

Dangit we signed him after August 31st, so he can't be on the postseason roster.
AN: Where you will be an A's fan or Dallas Braden will show you the repercussions of your actions.
Wouldn't it be hilarious though if he got called up, went nuts and hit 6 or 7 homers in the month, led the A's to the playoffs
And then couldn’t play in those games

Just kneecap someone who was on the roster pre-September...
Then Hermida could be his injury replacement.

Find his swing with the A's?
Uh, just ask Carlos Pena, and CarGon, and Nelson Cruz, and Ryan Ludwick and Andre Ethier.
That just dosen’t happen here. Now convert him to a pitcher, and we just might have something…

or John Jaha or Frank Thomas or Marco Scutaro or Mark Ellis or Coco Crisp
Pam liked my old sig better.
slight OT:
I thank any holy figure I can think of at the given second that we didnt sign Scutaro. Pennington’s WAR is 3.2, Scutaro’s is 1.5 at 5x the salary. Bullet = dodged.
-Yeah, I just posted that, but my opinion is apparently "wrong" a significant portion of the time though, so take it as you will.
I'd rather have Scutaro entering next season than the A's current option
of “Mark Ellis and/or nothing”… I mean, it’s not like Pennington wouldn’t have been playing.

Scutaro at 2nd?
I’ll take Orlando Hudson at around the same yearly rate…

You think he's going to sign for $5.5M next year?
I suppose second basemen are generally underpaid, but that seems bizarrely low to me.

He won't get close to $10M, IMO
Even though he’s having his best season yet, he’ll get something around 2/15$M.
I just have a hunch that’s the amount.
And if that’s the case, Oakland should be on that yesterday

Hudson made $6.25 million in 2008, the most he's made in his career.
For some reason, people don’t think he’s worth money. I think $5.5 is reasonable for him (even if he deserves a more). It’s not like his offensive numbers this year are great compared to past years.

Hudson't salary, year by year
can be found here
after his 2008 highpoint his salary dropped about half for 2009 and only reached $5 million for 2010, despite having 4 gold gloves (2 in each league)
It seemed bizarrely low that he signed for that little this season.
The market in general is bizarrely low right now. I cant see Hudson getting more than $7MM a year.

Andre Ethier has the same WAR as Kevin Kouzmanoff.
but, uh…..

Here's a thing.
From CBSSports.com…
Injured A’s RHP Joey Devine pitched a simulated game Saturday and appeared fine. Devine is rehabilitating from reconstructive Tommy John elbow surgery. LHP Josh Outman, who also had Tommy John surgery, was also scheduled to pitch a simulated game but threw off flat ground instead.
So, yeah.

We are SO making the simulated playoffs.

Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeper.
I’ve been saying this forever but Hermida is talented enough to allow him to hold the sleeper tag at the major league level. Somehow figure out a way to make him healthy.
Calling Jeremy Hermida a sleeper baseball star
is like calling Rip Van Winkle a sleeper farming star.

Can we turn our attention to Colby Rasmus trade ideas now please?
