A's Lose Final Cactus League Game 11-3

In the final tuneup before the regular season kicks off tomorrow, the A's backups looked sharp and ready for action. Starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez only pitched two innings. He apparently considers himself fully ready for the regular season, because he used this appearance to experiment with right-handed pitching. The results weren't good, as he allowed seven runs and walked three, but hopefully he learned something that can be applied to one of his real starts this year.

By the end of the game, Josh Donaldson was the only player that was eligible and healthy that didn't make an appearance tonight, and the only starters that played the full nine were Akinori Iwamura and Rajai Davis.

Also, congratulations to Eric Sogard, who got his first Cactus League Major League hit off of Dusty Hughes.

Tomorrow, the A's start meaningful baseball as they take on the Kansas City Royals at 5:10 PM.

Had to do something.

Surely couldn’t watch that game.

My observations

Suzuki looks like he needs the regular season to start as he has had a tough Spring. I hope Cust makes the roster. Crisp seems like hes ready in midseason form. Barton looks good too. He has really developed an eye this spring.

This recap was awesome.

I didn’t see any of tonight’s game, but I think I got a pretty good sense of what it was like.

Also: what the what, Gio? Why so many runs?

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 14, 2010 7:57 PM PDT reply actions

Now the question is

Do the A’s start the season with Carter or let him sit at AAA for a little while longer… after his 0-19 Spring it doesn’t seem likely he’ll be rushed, especially given the blockbuster signings this past January of Carl Crawford and Jayson Werth and the incredible, vintage trade Beane pulled off for Dan Uggla.

yes, my bad

I missed his AB today, as I was doing more productive things… like smashing my head into the wall.

I thought Beane signed Crawford, Beltre, and Scutaro

and traded Bailey, Suzuki, Mazzaro, Breslow, Kouzmanoff, and prospects to the Yankees and Red Sox for bullpen arms, Nick Swisher, and Jesus Montero.

That ought to be fun.

The crowd gave Sogard a very nice ovation after his hit. Good to see.

BOOF=BARF

Yeah, I know Gio got racked up, but 6-0 at the end of two isn’t the end of the world, even with this offense. But Boof put it out of reach. He’s been alternately adequate and awful.

I hope I never see him in an A’s uniform again after this year.

Bullpen didn't need saving

There’s a lot of fodder in there. Wolf, James…

Seems like every time I’ve watched Boof, he’s gotten racked up. Which is around half the time he’s been called in from the bullpen. He had that one great 4.1 inning game, but the other times, meh.

by richwol1 on Sep 14, 2010 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions

His value, whatever it may be

Is to be able to soak up innings when we need a guy to go long to save our young pitchers some innings. He did that.

Right, this game was lost, Geren knew it, he made the right call this time.

You just float Boof out there to gobble up innings that nobody wants or needs. He’s like Tim Wakefield.

I assume there must be games in which Tim Wakefield didn't suck,

because his ERA isn’t 10,000.00 and in general his numbers aren’t embarrassing, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one.

Hey, think of it this way:

Gio got yanked so early, he can make another start without running into the Verducci Effect!

KALLUP KORNFUSION

Ok, the game was lost early, so the call-ups had to play….but what I don’t understand at all is why we even considered Iamura (sp), who was let go by the PIRATES, for goodness’ sake! When the Pirates let someone go, you know they are truly awful. Many of the players on the field tonight, including my man Carson, have batting averages that are miniscule to non-existent. Oh, well, to quote some lyrics from an old British pop song, “there’s always tomorrow to bring us a smile, perhaps we should capture that thought for a while….”

Incidentally, in my short time back in the Bay Area, I have not run into a single Giants fan who hated the A's.

I’ve pretty much had great interactions with them. It’s mostly, “Hey man, as long as you’re not the Dodgers,” and I respond with, “Hey man, as long as you’re not the Angels.” Let’s not lose track of the real enemies here: sports teams from Los Angeles and New York.

The closest thing to tension has been a couple of Giants fans teasing me about how pretty soon I’ll have to go down to the South Bay to watch my team. I think they’re pretty pleased they didn’t get robbed 20 years ago.

Gio got screwed.

"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury

by OldhamA on Sep 15, 2010 12:52 AM PDT reply actions

Huh?

Seems like he screwed himself. In each of the first three innings, he walks a guy he has no business walking and it ends up costing him. He walks Aviles in the first on four pitches, and Aviles ends up scoring the first run of the inning with two outs. He walks Blanco in the second on five pitches with two outs, opening the floodgates again. And of course he walks Gordon (five pitches) AND Blanco in the third, paving the way for a three-run homer with two outs.

If you look at walks the way you look at errors when tallying earned runs, every single run Gio allowed was made possible by walks.
