Who's Your Playoff Team?
Assuming that the last two games have highlighted the difference between a playoff-bound team and the 2010 A's (and the absolute inequality between the payrolls, as brilliantly highlighted by danmerqury), it might be time to start thinking about the playoffs without the A's. However, the silver lining is that the playoffs the year will be Angels-less, which is always a good thing around here. Assuming you are like me and watch baseball down to the last drop, you also pick a playoff team to root for all the way to the end.
If the season ended today, we'd see the Yankees, Rays, Twins and Rangers from the AL, and the Braves, Reds, Padres and Phillies from the NL. The Red Sox are still barely within shouting distance in the AL and the Giants, Cardinals, Rockies, and Dodgers are still very much alive in the NL. Some new faces there; I like when that happens.
Tampa Bay Rays
I consider the season a success when only one of the Yankees/Red Sox plays in October. I have rooted for the Rays before and had a good time doing it. Any team that is battling for first place with the Yankees going into September but can only draw 11,000 fans to a game has my sympathy vote off the bat. I like seeing The Trop filled with people, much like the Coliseum.
Minnesota Twins
Touted in the past as "the A's of the Central", Minnesota is another team who has been known for filling out a roster on a budget. That doesn't hold true this season (they spent some money this year to go with their shiny new stadium), but they have battled some pretty devastating injuries to take the lead in the Central. Plus, who doesn't like, "Well played, Mauer"?
Texas Rangers
Mostly because they aren't the Angels. If it can't be the A's, I'm certainly glad that another team besides Anaheim has the chance to shine. Led by Ron Washington (who has managed the team and the fallout from a shocking drug revelation), the Rangers have Vlad (who was always my favorite Angel), the feel-good story of Josh Hamilton, and one of the players I like most in MLB, Nelson Cruz.
I am almost always an AL girl; the exception of course, when it's a hated AL team in the World Series. That said, I followed the Rockies all the way to the Series once, and probably could be persuaded to do it again. I liked the All-Star Campaign of Domo Arigato Vote Joey Votto, but I'm not sure that's enough to pull for the Reds. The Giants are a mixed-bag for me; I have enjoyed watching their games this season (baseballdad is a huge Giants fan) and I wish we had a Buster Posey, but I know that the Giants having a good season is not good for the A's.
Braves? Phillies? I'm neutral.
Cardinals? I think we all know how I feel about that.
If I had to pull for a NL team, sign me up for the San Diego Padres. With one of the dead lowest payrolls in baseball (only the Pirates spent less this season, and the with the Padres' $37,800,000 compared to the Yankees' $207,000,000, never has an underdog looked more attractive), the Padres win almost every night, and have survived months of "don't worry; they'll fade" comments. In addition to representing California, they also embody the spirit which baseball is desperately trying to hang onto; that money doesn't always buy wins and a ticket to the playoffs.
So how about you? Second favorite teams, anyone? Ponies in the race? Who's going to take the 2010 World Series?

“Any team that is battling for first place with the Yankees going into September but can only draw 11,000 fans to a game has my sympathy vote off the bat.”
That is my feeling exactly. Even with the overflowing talent that they have in their organization the payroll they have will make any sustained success very challenging. So while their window is still open to disrupt the Yankess and Red Sox I am pulling for them all the way. And I have to say that a Rays-Padres Series would be great.
I root for the A's

(possibly) true story
I remember hearing during the ’87 WS that a reporter decided to find where on the Mississippi River the equidistant point between Busch Stadium and the Metrodome was. It turned out to be in Eastern Iowa, so he went there to find out who the locals were rooting for. The answer – “The Cubs”.
Yeah, I’m like that, without the angsty hopelessness that comes from 100+ years of FAIL.

I'm with you
the A’s got me back into baseball, and been following them since 2000, I usually stop watching baseball once the A’s are out of the playoffs. But recently I’ve been trying to watch some post season baseball the past couple seasons and this year will try again, and if I do, I’ll be rooting for the Padres and Rays or any team that beats the Rdsux.

I always watch the post-season
Usually, I’m reduced to hoping for the teams I despise the most to lose. It is nearly impossible to watch the Yankees or Red Sox play the Angels, because no matter who loses, I’ll still be disgusted that the other team won. 2008 was actually kinda fun, since I have no strong hatred of either the Rays or Phillies. Last year, though, was hell.
I can't see, now I have to pee, and I can't count to three, but I can count to JÄGERMEISTER!
I'd love to see a Phillies Rangers
Or Reds Rays World Series.
Although the Padres are a team much like the A’s, an unfriendly hitter’s park, great pitching, suspect offense. A real feel good story in the MLB after expectations were low.
It’s so easy to forget Atlanta has sports teams, the city sometimes forgets that fact. But if anything they’re in football mode come October.
Baseball could use some parity and my dad was a big Philly guy back in the day.
A’s could regain some respect tonight if they at least show up on ESPN. Brett Anderson better know what’s going on tonight in the Bronx.
The FairWeather Channel - Sports Comics and Bandwagon Forecast
I will never ever root for another AL team
But I will be keeping my eye on those Padres!
I just like how they’re such a similar team to ours, and after having been to Petco a couple times, I have come away completely impressed every time. The staff, players, atmosphere, park, everything is very well done!
AN: Where you will be an A's fan or Dallas Braden will show you the repercussions of your actions.

I don’t think the gnats will catch up, though. Still, I loved Petco when I went earlier this year.

Twins / Padres WS
Partially because I like the Twins, partially because I want whomever MLB and the networks don’t want.

I would love to see a Braves - Rays WS
Back when I was little, it was Braves or no baseball on TV sometimes so I watched a lot of them. They were like the Buffalo Bills of MLB for awhile, but it would be good to see Bobby Cox get another championship. Plus, Hudson.
If I had another AL team, it would be the Rays. They are like us ca. 2000-2003, but probably better.

Yankees,Twins,Rangers and Rays as the wildcard.

I don’t care who wins but I do like Dusty Baker. He’s a cool guy and a Sacramento boy and the Reds winning would be a surprise which is always fun.

It's good that he's a cool guy

Rays-Padres
I would like to see someone win who hasn’t won before.
I live in SD and I really admire the way the Padres have gone about their business this year; it is the same aura that the A’s had when Zito was the only one left of the Big 3 and we went to the playoffs.
Plus, it would be awesome to watch the WS from my conference room!
There are less teams that I despise than normal, and that's always a good thing.
I'm here to talk about the past.
I hope they all lose.

In the AL, I have no bad feelings about the Rays or the Twins.
NL, it’s gotta be the Padres, although I could be persuaded to root for the Reds. I suppose if I had to make a rooting hierarchy, it’d be:
Rays > Padres > Twins >> Reds >> Phillies > Braves >> Rangers >>> Supergluing my hand to a hot stove >>>>>>>>> Yankees
I have zero personal investment in the NL team. I just cannot force myself to care.
AL I’d go with the Rays again.

I know folks are gonna cringe at this but
NL I have to go with the Giants because I’m a local boy and i support all the local teams. If they don’t make it I’m going with the Padres and in the AL I’d go with the Twinkies. As much as I love Ron Washington, it will be a cold day in hell, pigs will fly, Ryan Sweeney will hit 40 jacks, and the sun will set in the east before I ever f$%^&*g root for the Texas Rangers!

I grew up rooting for the A’s and the Giants but the A’s are always my team first! Rooting for the Giants is kinda like a brotherly rivalry and I like some of their players. Plus, the longer they play baseball the better it is for me because I’m a bartender at Public House and once baseball season is over so is working a regular schedule for me. But just for this year. My dad is a die hard Giants fan, and he deserves to see the Giants win the big one. I’m currently out of the country, and won’t be back in time for the WS, so if the Giants are to win a WS, this would the year for me.

It’s no secret how much I despise the Red Sox. But if Boston and SF were to somehow play in the World Series, I’d root my ass off for the Sox — that’s how much I hate the Giants.
I don’t want them to ever win a Series … ever. I want all those people who say “I just want to win one before I die,” to never win one before they die. They’re the Cubs West Coast, and I want it to stay that way … that’s also why I’ll always have a soft spot for the Angels … don’t get me wrong, I don’t like them, either … but thank you, thank you, thank you, for beating the Giants in ’02!!!!!

I disagree
but what’s the fun of being a fan if you don’t get to choose who you want to win.
So go and root for who you want, travdog6 can do the same.
My son wants to root for the Red Sox, and I’m not about to disown him (for that at least.)
What the hell did you do??!!
How could that happen to your son?! What a drag …
(Actually, I think it’s cool that you let him pick his own team … damn, though, what a shame he’s picked Boston … I hope he’s like 5, so he can change his mind later.)
I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway.
He started age 5 cause a buddy was a Sox fan. Age 8 now...
he also is an A’s fan, and we only got him A’s swag, so he’s cool.

I'll let my son root for whoever he wants to root for.
However, that hasn’t stopped me from indoctrinating him since Day One. If he likes any other teams, it’s not going to be on my head.
My dad grew up as a Cardinal fan,
many former A’s played there, and my uncle still lives in Missouri, so I might be more partial to them on the NL side. The Padres wouldn’t be that bad either.
On the AL side, probably Texas because they aren’t the Angels, and for Wash.
Can’t root for the Yankees or the Red Sox. Probably won’t want to root for the Reds, but Gomes is there.
Well, you can forget the Cardinals ... they have completely quit.
All that talent, and they’ve laid down like dogs.
I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway.
Tough call.
Obviously not the Yankees. And not the Twins (or the White Sox, as the case may be) because I hate that they basically got a taxpayer-funded payroll boost, and besides, I pull for the Tigers in the Central. And not the Rangers because I have grown to hate them and their fans much more than the Angels and their fans over the course of this season. No team that spends a season in bankruptcy should be able to have the Rangers’ payroll, and they shouldn’t be able to screw creditors out of money. You couldn’t pay your bills? Fine, contraction time. They’re just an expansion team anyway. So I guess, from the AL, it’s the Rays for me, even though they’re barely a real team in my eyes (if you couldn’t tell, I’d like nothing more than for baseball to contract back to the original 16.)
In the NL, I’ll pull for the Giants if they make it. My loyalties are to the A’s first, but I’m a Bay Area fan. If they don’t sneak in, I guess I’ll pull for the Braves. I was a bandwagon Braves fan when I was a kid for a couple years, mostly because they beat my dad’s Indians and I hated the Indians for beating the A’s once at a game I attended. I still have love for the Braves at some level.

2010 AL West is the 2007 NL East
Let’s do this!
100% Athletics, 100% Baseball. 2009 Athletics, 40% Baseball.
I got one as well...
…interesting that they were discounting the first two rounds for season ticket holder. Not that it matters.
Any team below ESPN's radar
…which pretty much means the Texas Rangers in the American League and the San Diego Padres in the National League. Sure to make the Lords of Baseball plotz.
Mariners
Oh, wait, but I thought…
In that case, Padres, Twins and Rays. I’ll also accept WS sharing.
100% Athletics, 100% Baseball. 2009 Athletics, 40% Baseball.
My ongoing rooting interest
I’d like to root for the Rays but the Trop is an abomination that needs to not be on my TV. I like Dusty, so I can root for the Reds in spite of the 1990 World Series. I like Wash and would love to see him with a ring. On the other hand: George W. Bush. I can finally root for the spunky Twins, now that the Metrodome is dead, although October weather there will be scary. As a child in Milwaukee I was a Braves fan and when they moved to Hotlanta I left baseball for 15 years. Screw them and their cheesy tomahawks. I’m a San Diego native and the Pads are a great story in a cool park. Phillies: meh. Yankees are hard to root for in spite of the numerous good guys in that organization. As a So Cal boy, the Dodgers were my first team, the club that integrated baseball, a beacon of class and quality. And then along came Murdoch and the McCourts. Screw them, too! The only remaining question to be answered is: “Am I a bad A’s fan because I like the Giants?” It’s an affection that has only appeared in the last few years, nourished by a great yard, a terrific broadcasting team, and a friendship with a member of their organization.
Yes, without a doubt, that makes you a "bad A's fan".
Next question?
I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway.
I find baseball really boring to watch if the A's aren't playing
so I probably won’t watch very much of the playoffs. I don’t really care who wins, but I don’t want the Twins to win. I have a standing bet with my friend that if the Twins win the World Series I have to buy a Nick Punto jersey.
I actually kind of hope the Yankees win because what’s one more championship for the Yankees? I mean, they’re supposed to win every year. Also, I like being the most successful non-Yankees franchise in the AL (damn Cardinals!) (in terms of World Series championships).

Does it benefit the A's if the Yankee's win?
More revenue sharing dollars to go around.
Brighter spotlight on the inequities of the current MLB system.
I think rooting for the smaller market teams would actually be counterproductive as an A’s fan as it proves the A’s should just continue to try to do more with less.
Wow.
Root for the Yankees so that your team gets more revenue sharing dollars?

If the Dodgers can miraculously make up ground and make the playoffs, obviously I’d cheer for them, since they are my NL team. But of the likely candidates…
Reds – I’ve loved what the Reds have done this season and thing they’re a fun team to watch. I’d cheer for them.
Rays – I like the Rays, and like more that they’re pushing the NY$ for 1st in the division.
Braves – I usually hate the braves, but I love Tim Hudson, so I’d pull for him.

Some years, you kinda know that the year will end with the big guys winning. This year, though, it seems really open. Plus, if Lee gets his stuff together, even Texas will have a chance to win a playoff series.

Relatively small market- scrappy kind of team- fans are pretty decent. Once the A’s are completely eliminated, I’ll cheer for them -sort of. It’s really hard to put much concern with anyone but the A’s.
