I think it's the right move
I like most of the other picks too. Love that they’re having Green and Parker together! Left side of the IF 2012?
I think I would have preferred Haviland over Banwart though…

The idea of Grant Green playing shortstop for a major league team
is not quite in eat-my-hat territory yet, but it’s pretty close. I expect him to open the 2011 season at a new position.
"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.
So his defense there is pretty hopeless?
I’ve heard the arm is so-so, is his range just bad?
Where does he move to? 2nd?

Green's defense at SS is TBD
The metrics hate him… but minor league defensive metrics are notoriously unreliable.
Scouting reports are needed.
The monster at the end of this blog.
As grover said, we definitely need some year-end scouting reports on Green's D.
I’ve seen 5-6 Ports games this season, and my eyes, unprofessionally trained as they may be, see the same things the numbers do. No way that guy’s a SS in MLB. IMO, I think even saying he winds up on the infield is optimistic, unless he makes some serious adjustments. He looks pretty clunky out there, which is why I think 3B will be a stretch. As far as range, I’ve learned not to try to guesstimate range from visual observations, but it doesn’t look like he’s got the world’s greatest lateral quickness. But, again, I need some scouts to confirm this before I start buying shares of my own BS…
Of course, his biggest problem is with his throws, and they truly are cover-your-eyes gawdawful. Think Jason Giambi at 3B. Seeing him field a grounder (ok), then that gnarly throwing motion… blech. He does seem to be able to get something on it, though, so I think COF will be a fallback option for him (and thus kills his value… as a COF, right now I fear he projects to be something like Jeff Francoeur, but without the hose? Just an irresponsible guess. Although I’m kind of a pessimist by nature, so there’s that.).
The bat’s probably going to have to carry him, and continue to improve. On the plus side, he has hit for more power than I would’ve thought him capable of. And I should also acknowledge that it is entirely possible that I saw him at his worst. I hear he’s inconsistent in the field, so any SSS caveats (not to mention any “why should I care what Cletus thinks” caveats) should apply here.
And Parker is hardly inspiring any Brooks Robinson comps at third base
He is struggling with throwing accuracy especially. Green will probably stay up the middle (2B or CF) if he moves from short, but Parker is DH/1B if he can’t make it at third and that would really hurt him.

I really doubt Green would move to CF
You could be right, but I just don’t see it…

Is he so slow that he can't play corner OF?
That is, after all, where the organization is really hurting right now.

Batwise, I thought you were low on him?
I mean, his luck and park neutral stats have close to evened out with his actual line, but I still think if he’s to move to a power premium position, he needs to absolutely rake in AA and AAA on his way up…

Parker?
No, I have no opinion on his bat other than what’s based on his stats, which are super-solid (loving the 4:5 BB/K ratio for a power hitter). He’s certainly one of the very few players in the Oakland system who actually improved his stock this season. Given the charred remains down there, he’s almost certainly a top 10 prospect now. Shit, probably top 5.
And hearing the high opinion that scouts have of his glove makes him look even better as a prospect.

I was actually asking about Green
No, I think pretty much everyone on here is happy with Parker’s bat, especially considering how thin we are with lefties coming up.
I was more curious what your thoughts on Green are, as I’m still a little suspect his bat would provide the necessary power for a corner position. While the 19 HR’s are nice (8 this month), the K:BB or 113:36 is concerning me.
Gotta say I was not expecting a +.500 SLG out of him though…

Well the ISO is not that great
Once you account for park and league adjustments, it’s not that far above average. His hitting is being buoyed by a .355 BABIP, which is nice and all, but the odds of him hitting like that in the majors are tiny. Even Michael Young, who’s basically Green’s upside, is only at .336.
I don’t know, I mean, he doesn’t suck, but as you point out, that K/BB ratio is in Matt Sulentic territory.

Actually, Parker is considered to be a good 3B.
In BA’s annual “Best Tools Survey”, apparently Parker got some votes for best defensive 3B in the Cal league:
I believe in the bat and he got some support as best defensive 3B in the league when we were doing our Best Tools surveys, too.
From a BA chat with Conor Glassey, 8/27/10. (Have to scroll down a bit, but you’ll find it.).
Having seen Parker myself several times, I’m surprised at how many errors he’s racked up this year. Given that he’s quite smooth at 3B, I’d have to think that’s at least in some small part due to having Spina at 1B. Spina’s just horrendous over there. The proverbial “stone hands”, I s’pose…
I've heard that a share of Parker's errors were the result of getting to balls most wouldn't
Can’t remember which scout but for some reason BP rings a bell.
I mean, hell, UZR loves Kouz and most of his errors/issues have been a result of a clunky and somewhat inaccurate throwing motion.

Interesting
After seeing Parker’s error totals and knowing that A’s played him at first base in Kane County last year I assumed he’s below average defensively. He seems like a really interesting future option at third now.
