It's That Time Again (cross post)
(Hey all, this a repost of something I wrote for my other favorite blog)
Bill King is the greatest broadcaster I have ever listened to. The National Baseball Hall of Fame gives out an award to the best of the best every year and fan voting (to add 3 candidates to an eventual list of 10 that past Ford C. Frick Award winners and a specially appointed panel will use to select the next winner) begins on facebook tomorrow.
It stuns me that we still have to push for him to be posthumously honored with the Ford C. Frick Award. But we do. And we should. I can't believe the A's aren't and haven't. On this, all of us should agree: Bill King deserves this recognition.

This article says the we can "influence" the outcome. I sort of chuckle and roll my eyes at that. We have made Bill the top fan vote earner on multiple occasions and a lot of good that did us. We need to crash the gates people. My plea to all of you:
- If you don't have a facebook account, please get one. You can delete it after the month. All fan voting will be conducted on the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum's facebook profile. You can even friend me!
- Everyday when you vote, post a facebook status that says "I voted for Bill King for the Ford C. Frick Award and you should to." Or something.
- Rinse and repeat daily, starting tomorrow and concluding the last day of September.
We fight all the time on this here blog about where the A's should play. I think we all agree that Bill King deserves this recognition. Let's unite and form some kind of Voltron thing and make the Hall of Fame's appointed panel pick him.
And one last reminder of how awesome Bill King is, was and always will be (at about 1:39 in the below video, full disclosure I wrote the song, recorded it and made the crappy video):

Go A’s, Go Bill and thanks for listening to my rant.

Why only facebook voting?
Bill King deserves this award no doubt- but I wonder why they limit the voting to facebook users. Believe it or not (and I know this is a shock to many), the majority of adults in the U.S. do not use facebook or twitter.

Whoops, Jeffro
I just posted the FB link too..the more reminders the better :)
Holy Toledo!
#8. Seriously, how cool a name is Dallas Braden?
Just voted!
Thanks for the reminders, jeffro and LongTimeFan!

Let's do this!
Just cast my first vote, and will be doing so everyday until September 30th!
Right now Bill’s at 74 votes with 29% of the vote, but Tom Cheeck has 119 votes and 47% of the vote.
Let’s vault Bill to 1st!

It's unfortunate
You hate to vote against Tom Cheek by voting for Bill (which I did). Both broadcasters passed away within 9 days of each other.
I know!
They are both great broadcasters, but I really don’t think Cheek’s calls compare to Bill King…

I just voted
…and it didn’t ask me for any information beyond that which it undoubtedly has already collected about me. Is there a way to put a link on the front page of AN so daily voting will be an easy click away? BTW, Bill is pulling closer to Tom Cheek.
Losing this team would be a huge failure for this city and an affront to Oakland’s great sports legacy.
Some of the names that made me laugh:
-Vince Controneo
-Joe Buck
-Ray Fosse
-REX HUDLER?!? (If anyone has tuned into an Angels TV broadcast before this year, they will know how painful it was to hear him speak)
-Mike Krukow AND Duane Kuiper (ugh)
-Al Michaels (I just don’t see him as much of a baseball broadcaster)
-Greg Papa (really?)
What’s the qualification for being considered?
And i don’t mean to offend anyone who likes any of these guys, I just don’t think any of them are anything spectacular…

Michaels wasn't bad
People don’t remember because it had been so long since ABC, his employer most of his career, had baseball, ending with the failed Baseball Network. Unfortunately, Michaels was often teamed up with Tim McCarver and Jim Palmer, which meant that he had to fight to be heard.
Does only one person win?

Bill King has jumped ahead of Tom Cheeck as of 7:53 PST
Bill King now holds a slim 22 vote lead with 350 votes (37%) whereas Cheek is at 328 (34%).
Great 1st day of voting ladies and gents!
Let’s keep this up, I know King was as important to me as he was to you, I can’t have imagined my childhood without listening to KNBR 680 and the sweet tones of King on the air.

Mine says Cheek 134, King 46. Did I vote in the wrong place?

Here's a cross post for you:
Why do there need to be like seventeen of these threads cluttering up the sidebar? This is like the third consecutive year that this has happened.
Mods, can you delete the redundant posts, por favor?
"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.
Well it wouldn't be necessary if we'd just elect the guy.
But yes, I agree we only need one thread.

"By the end of the year, I'll have Dallas throwing right-handed'' -Ben Sheets
We’re thinking about how many times we woke up at 2:30 in the morning with the radio on, our 12-year-old minds having fallen to sleep the moment King signed off for the night.
Wow. Take aside any issues I’ve had with Urban. This is one of the most well written sentences I’ve ever related to. This is EXACTLY who I was. This is it. This is how I felt. This is me.
I’m not an overtly emotional person, but Bill King brings it out of me.
There was never another non-player/manager/coach who was more deserving of this award.
I know we all feel this way, but this runs very deep with me.
I can’t reflect on my childhood without Bill King being a part of it.
Ladies and gentlemen, I have tears in my eyes as I try to describe what this man meant to me. Call it trivial, silly, whatever, but in my heart Bill King is the definition of a Hall Of Famer.
Not receiving this award while alive is a true disservice to the man.
But not awarding him this accolade posthumously?
That, my friends, is a black mark on the sport of baseball as a whole.
Bill King is a legend, in every sense of the word.
