Inspired by something similar from BTB, but Oakland specific.

Wow!
I wasn’t even close close in my guess!
"By the end of the year, I'll have Dallas throwing right-handed'' -Ben Sheets
Runners up
Braden change up (32.2%)
Bailey cutter (32.1%)
Mazzaro slider (31.5%)
Cahill change up (28.1%)
Sheets curve (27.2%)

there is not much spread in the middle set
32.4 → 31.5 covering 4 pitches is nearly a rounding error.
Certainly statistical noise given the 50 pitch minimum.
Sure, but you have to rank them somehow, right?

yes
and sample size matters – I’d rank Braden’s 32.2 higher than Ross’s slider if was thrown twice as much.
More total misses. 2 out of 1000 difference is co-incidence.
You are free to do a ranking of your own

I know that
I was just trying to sharpen your ranking system. Don’t take it the wrong way, it’s my inner math major talking.
My ranking system is pretty clear and simple
It says:
Highest swing and miss percentage on Oakland A’s pitching staff
2010 MLB, through August 5th , minimum 50 swings against the pitch
It doesn’t say that Ross’s slider is a better pitch than Braden’s change up. If it said that, than your proposed change would perhaps indeed “sharpen” it. But, as it is, 32.4% is bigger than 32.2%.

Toughest fastballs, two seam or four seam
Breslow, four seam (23.0%)
Ross, two seam (22.9%)
Ross, four seam (22.9%)
Bailey, four seam (22.1%)
Rodriguez, four seam (18.8%)

Cahill throws the curve about 13% of the time
Would you suggest he throw it more often?
AN: Where you will be an A's fan or Dallas Braden will show you the repercussions of your actions.
Very cool, elcroata.
One thing, though: I don’t know where you got this data, but PitchFX routinely calls Wuertz’s slider a changeup half of the time. You may have to combine the data sets for his slider and his “changeup” to get an accurate reading.
Thanks
I got it from Pitch F/X, but can’t look at my DB now. I’ll check it.

It's one of the few pitch data sets you can completely combine, because Wuertz only has a fastball and his splittery/changeup-y slider.
So anything that’s not his fastball is just a slider.
