Carlos Gonzalez making himself into a superstar
"Gonzalez is my new favorite player to watch. I realize Albert Pujols could come just a few batting average percentage points away from winning the NL Triple Crown and that Joey Votto will get a paddleboat-load of MVP votes … but I'll take Carlos Gonzalez over both of them. I know, pass on Pujols?
I'm nuts."
One can only wonder what could have been if we hadnt traded him....maybe we finally could have had that big bat were missing now. hopefully we'll find another gem like him soon

Yes, he's very good
But give me Votto or Pujols are Patrol Craft any day of the week.

judging trades like this is a terrible idea.
What we’re asking is for people to stop pretending that ipse dixit counts as a "source." When you make a claim about baseball, you should be willing to put some reasonable amount of effort into explaining why it’s correct if someone asks you to. That’s basic respect for the other poster. - PT

looking at trade "begats" is interesting
but this one is certainly incomplete. It would need to start with the A’s draft pick Mulder.
And you’re right that it’s not a good way to judge a trade. One doesn’t really know until you know down the line (in hindsight, of course) how valuable that player (or players) ended up being for the team.
It may be a terrible idea
But how else would you do it?

Among other things, you at least need to look at value provided at the different "steps"
And really, it’s a bunch of separate decisions anyway. Some might be good, some bad, but it does little good to throw them into a huge pile and obscure the differences between them.

Oh, I agree

As to CarGon the superstar: it's just the Coors effect writ large
Take a look at his home/away splits here
I’m not suggesting we wouldn’t be better off with him here, but he would likely be a .267 hitter overall, with maybe 12 HR’s, even if you assume all of the following: 1) his average would be the same in the AL as it is for NL away games, 2) his home BA and SLG would be the same at the Coliseum as it is in NL away games, 3) he would hit homers at the Coliseum at the same rate he hits them in NL away games…
No way he’d be getting consideration for AL MVP. Still, I would rather he had not been traded…

Home-road splits… make… Paul… angry… very… angry… RRRRRARRR HULK SMASH STUPID SPLITS PAGE GNAAAARGHHHHHH
Seriously, homie, that does not work as analysis. You cannot assume those things you just assumed. Or perhaps more precisely, if you make predictions based on those assumptions, you will lose your shirt.

i can understand that splits are unfair because of the SSS on the road
but what do you make of Car-Gon’s dramatic difference in OPS in his splits?

Gonzalez VS Taylor
Why do people just throw away Coors stats? Even if you reduced him to .290 and 15 hrs he would still be by far the greatest hitter in this joke of a lineup. Holliday was traded for future prospects. Taylor became that prospect. He’s doing very little in AAA that’s not good.
If this team doesn’t make the playoffs by 2012 Beane’s rebuilding has completely failed.
Did CarGon do or say something to get shipped out of town?
I thought trading CarGon was a bad idea from the time it was announced. He had talent and was not given much of a chance. What did he do to get shipped out of town so quickly? As fansince1980 states an ineffective CarGon would still be the best hitter in the current lineup.
