Screen name: LoneStranger

Real name (optional): Mike Headley
Occupation: Senior Technical Support for a big software company
Age: 32
Gender: Guy
Hometown: Petaluma, currently residing in Fremont.
Story behind your screen name: Name I picked eons ago for an online game, and kept using it.
Favorite part(s) of AN: Community.
How you became an A’s fan: Not totally sure. It’s just kinda always been that way. My dad grew up in Missouri as a Cardinals fan, my mom outside of Pittsburgh and probably followed football more than baseball. My dad had an uncle who was a KC A’s fan, so that might have been why my dad had A’s games on TV more than the Giants. I started paying attention to sports about 1988, when the A’s were magic.
Favorite A’s game memory of all time: Going to the A’s playoff game 5 in 2004 against Boston with my dad.
Most heartbreaking A’s experience: A’s elimination from the playoffs in 2004, thinking that it may be a while before they get back.
Favorite A’s player (current and past): Suzuki / Mac
Greatest all-time A: Rickey
Last time you went to an A’s game / stadium: Aug 19th vs TB/Coliseum
Opposing team, player you dislike the most: Yankees. Any A-hole players.
Random interactions with A’s players: Daric Barton shook my then-eight-month old son’s hand at Spring Training 2009 and asked him how he was doing.
Most cherished piece of A’s memorabilia you have: Don’t have anything really special, just lots of bobbles and stuff that I’d like to have on display if I had lots of room.
What’s the best part of being an A’s fan: Building wins rather than buying them. (BTW, I said that before A’s marketing did.)

Tough to answer some of these question. I don’t really have one single event that stands out in some of those situations, rather there is a few and depending on the day I may choose one over the other.

Most heartbreaking A’s experience: 1988 and 1990.

Favorite A’s player (current and past): Daric Barton / Rickey Henderson

Greatest all-time A: Rickey Henderson

Last time you went to an A’s game / stadium: Few weeks ago / Oakland

Opposing team, player/manager you dislike the most: The Giants, The Angels, The Red Sox, The Yankees

Screenname: Nick

Real name: Nick
Occupation: Program Coordinator for a small non-profit
Age: 42
Gender: M
Hometown: Berkeley, originally, now an NRAF in Collingswood, New Jersey
Story behind your screenname: Ask my parents, I suppose
Favorite part of AN: Being part of a community of people who love the A’s and (generally) love each other, too
How you became an A’s fan: Followed the Finley teams a bit as a really young kid (the first baseball game I remember attending was the last game of Boston’s playoff sweep of the A’s in 1975 — the last day of the Finley dynasty), then, I admit followed the Giants in 1978, but after being away from the Bay Area for a couple years with my family fell in love with Billy Ball and have followed the A’s, and only the A’s, ever since.
Favorite A’s game memory of all time: I have a couple that I experienced in person: the 11th in a row to start 1981 against the M’s; the 3rd game of the A’s sweep of the Royals in the 1981 ALDS (Dave Beard K’ed John Wathan to end it!); and this game, on my birthday in 1987. McGwire came into the game, the Sat before the All-Star break, with 31 HRs. He crushed a line drive out to LF (where Nico and I were sitting in the bleachers) in his first AB. In the 8th, with the A’s down 5-3, Mike Davis led off against Dan Plesac with a double; Canseco ripped a daisy-cutter single to score Davis; McGwire walked up to the plate as the go-ahead run, and everyone in the park was hoping he’d hit #33, but knew that it was ridiculous to even ask him to do that. First pitch was a low fastball, and McGwire absolutely destroyed it — a high, high, high flyball to LF that just kept going up and up and up — watching it clear the fence and sail deep beyond (I think it ended up on the concrete steps between the 1st deck and the bleachers) — that is my single favorite moment I’ve ever experienced in a baseball stadium. Eck closed out the 6-5 win with a 1-2-3 9th, finishing it with a K.
Most heartbreaking: 1988, followed by the whole end to the last BoSox series
Favorite player: Hmm, hard to pick. Probably Rickey.
Greatest Oakland A: Bill Krueger. No, wait, Rickey
Last time you went to an A’s game: Some time in 1998. Welcome to NRAFdom.
Opposing team/mgr you dislike most: Yankees and BoSox are at the top, along with slegnA. Really dislike Guillen, too. If Mickey Hatcher ever becomes a manager, he will instantly become my least favorite manager of all time.
Random interactions with A’s: I saw Eric Chavez on BART in 1998 heading to the Coli for a Bay Bridge Series game.
Most cherished piece of memorabilia: 1) a ball signed by a bunch of players in 1981 at Evans Diamond at Cal during the post-strike “2nd spring training”; 2) a tape of the entirety of the game in 1982 when Rickey stole #119, including Lon’s immortal call of the moment (“Henderson getting a good sized lead now, he’s running! A pitchout, the throw to second….he’s safe at second he’s stolen 119!”)

The Perils of Revenue Sharing
by Victor Matheson
August 23, 2010

I found this bit very intriguing:

Update 2: A quick look at page 3 of Tampa’s financial statement further shows the problem. In 2008, the Rays went out and resigned their young talent, spent an additional $20 million on payroll (a 58% increase over their 2007 spending), went to the World Series, and… made $7 million less than the year before.

They were financially less well off for their outstanding on-field performance? WTF!?

by LowcountryJoe on Aug 25, 2010 12:09 PM PDT reply actions

so the revenue sharing system actively discourages teams from trying to win

Unless there is a financial upside that’s not exactly baseball related (like the “YES” network for the yankees).

That is bad news for those of us who want the A’s to sign Crawford.

by Billy Frijoles on Aug 25, 2010 12:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Perhaps the revenue sharing model should factor wins into the equation

This would provide incentive to perform. It also makes some sense logically, because a winning team on the road or on TV is likely to generate more revenue, with all other factors being equal.

It does keep the bad team down, but that might be for the best. If they won’t improve themselves why should the league reward them?

I think this would benefit the A’s as we tend to do the most with the least… the Marlins would likely benefit as well.

by DrDoom on Aug 25, 2010 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't believe a decent incentive can coexist with the revenue sharing

I think it makes more sense to let teams bve less profitable when they cannot placate their fans enough to generate the revenue they want. If a behavior is subidized, it generally continues…in this case having a product inferior to ones competition.

by LowcountryJoe on Aug 25, 2010 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep

They need to have penalties for multi-year hoarding. One year is fine since you may need to rebuild and want to save that money for a bigger investment later. Two years kind of borderline. After three years, if that money isn’t going to improving the team, major financial penalties. Maybe other non-monetary penalties as well, like loss of draft position or something to that affect.

Very true

So whatever penalty has to have, not so much loopholes, but maybe be cyclical. You get penalized every 3 or 4 years instead of every year after 3. And whatever monetary penalty should have more to do with what you’re awarded with Revenue sharing. So if you get $25 million in sharing, whatever the penalty is it can’t be more than that.

The total number of wins league-wide is fixed and unchangeable.

How is it in the League’s interest to incentivize something that is a zero-sum game?

by iglew on Aug 25, 2010 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions

it's good to incentivize effort

If all the teams are actively trying to win, that would probably result in a better product on the field across the league, no? I mean, I guess that the supply of major league quality ballplayers is also somewhat fixed, but it’s probably not being used at full efficiency just yet.

by colin on Aug 26, 2010 5:10 AM PDT up reply actions

If your goal is a better product on the field,

then you should target your incentive to a better product on the field, not wins directly.

This is a real problem, and MLB is attempting, with partial success, to address it. But the problem is that the game is less entertaining to the audience because of the sense that some teams just aren’t trying, whether because they can’t or they won’t. Will paying teams a greater reward for winning improve that? I don’t think it will.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

That's just income, though, right?

How about increase in value of the company?

I haven’t gotten a chance to look at the Rays yet, but I doubt it’s as simple as comparing one year’s income to the next’s. A company will often make investment in the future that doesn’t immediately show in the next year’s income.

Real name (optional): people really do call me AV.

Occupation: book designer

Age: 40 this tuesday. (hint!)

Gender: dude (formative years in a beach town in SoCal.)

Hometown: born in mendoza, argentina. now oakland.

Story behind your screen name: i have a rather unique real name and i don’t like getting googled, and yet so egocentric that i couldn’t pick an impersonal one?

Favorite part of AN: the way i can’t avoid the massive time suck during heavy deadlines. trying to figure out what i can actually contribute other than plain ole fanaticism.

How you became an A’s fan: it’s in my profile.

Favorite A’s game memory of all time: i don’t have a lot of post-season games in person. but i was there at game 20, which was a heck of a game in itself, and also it was 20.

Most heartbreaking A’s experience: bill king dying. it was him and him alone that nurtured whatever initial interest i had and made it into this thing i carry with me now.

Favorite A’s player (current and past): ellis (he’s risen as the face of the A’s for me, past chavez). rollie, though i never saw him play he’s still the one want to call and say, hey let’s go to a game today.

Greatest all-time A: i don’t have personal experience with this one. but the videos tell me rickey. maybe canseco with his 40/40.

greatest all-time facial gesture made by an A’s player: canseco’s self-shocked wince after hitting that one into the upper deck at the kingdome.

Last time you went to an A’s game / stadium: last wednesday.

Opposing team, player/manager you dislike the most: scioscia—though i wish the A’s had a manager as personally invested in every play, just maybe 95% less pouty. angels if they’re ahead in the standings. bosox/yankees in general.

Random interactions with A’s players: none! (though i was in santa cruz once and my friend needed cheap sunglasses, so she went into a drug store to get some while i waited in the car, and she came out saying that there was this tall handsome man in there asking her about her A’s hat, and if she lived in oakland, how she felt about being an A’s fan. the next game we catch on TV back home, she’s all like: that’s HIM! it was david justice when he first came to oakland.)

Most cherished piece of A’s memorabilia you have: a couple flannel hats from an earlier era. probably promotional giveaways, but i like the look of those years. and a white 1988 AL champions hat (also a 1988 WS hat, but that doesn’t seem as glorious).

What’s the best part of being an A’s fan: living in oakland and going to games or listening to them on the AM dial.

Favorite A’s game memory of all time: ALDS Game 3 vs. Twins, running around the stadium with a broom in hand for at least 20 minutes after the game then yelling at Tim Kawakami for his prediction that the A’s would blow it. CLASSY!!!
Most heartbreaking A’s experience: It’s gotta be Gibson. as a kid I had no idea that was possible against the Eck.
Favorite A’s player (current and past): Past = Canseco. Current = Zook.
Last time you went to an A’s game / stadium: 8/17/10 in Oakland 6-2 win over Blue Jays
Opposing team, player/manager you dislike the most: Red Sox. Their fans are so obnoxiously disgustingly annoying.
Random interactions with A’s players: none
Most cherished piece of A’s memorabilia you have: umm…maybe a bunch of old baseball cards? Although I wouldn’t call those “cherished”

"Can this team NOT develop great young pitchers?"

Not developing great young pitchers was sort of a specialty of the A’s from about 1984 (when Curt Young came up) to 1999 (when Hudson came up). I’m sure you remember those years: the only starter the A’s developed from their own farm system during that 15-year period was Steve Ontiveros, who was sort of a combination of Gio and Duke (talented, sort of a headcase, hurt all the time). They could maybe claim credit for Kevin Tapani (whom they traded to the Dodgers as part of the Welch deal) and Tim Belcher. But that’s it. An unbelievable run of headcases, losers, dudes with great stuff and no ability to harness it, other guys with “toughness” but no stuff…Codiroli, Conroy, Warren, Rijo (before he went to the Reds), Heimueller, Krueger, Mooneyham, van Poppel, Slusarski, Otto, Wasdin, Wengert, Johns, Burns…and I’m sure I’m forgetting a dozen other guys, too.

I would not have pegged it at that long a run, but at my age, selective memory is very feasible. It’s easy for me to see history as Hunter, Holtzman, Blue, Odom, Fingers → Billyball’s “5 Aces” → Stew, Welch, Moore, Eck → Big 3 + Harden → Anderson, Cahill, Gonzalez, Braden, Mazzaro. The “Mooneyham years” never happened in my head.

Well, the Stew, Welch, Moore, Eck, Sanderson, Honeycutt, Nelson years

coincided with the 15 year period when they couldn’t develop a young pitcher to save their lives. All those amazing reclamation projects made up for it.

Whew, just out of the lineup… probably because he’s injured and the A’s haven’t told us yet…

Screen name: iglew
Real name (optional): I have many names, and I don’t consider the one on my driver’s license more real than the others.
Occupation: I say "tax accountant" because it’s easier than explaining what I really do. Some clients refer to me as "my accountant", but I don’t actually do much real accounting.
Age: 44
Gender: male
Hometown: grew up in Anchorage, lived in Oakland for about 20 years, then moved to Seattle area. I’m happy here, but I still refer to Oakland as my "hometown", even in non-A’s discussions.
Story behind your screen name: My last name is Lew. In the early 1980s I was in a postal community with an Anchorage address and some guy had the clever idea of calling me Ig Lew. Some others picked up on it. I’ve re-used the name in other communities over the years.
Favorite part of AN: Poetry.
How you became an A’s fan: I had lived in Oakland for more than a decade before I paid any attention to baseball. Some time late in the 1999 season I started occasionally watching on TV or listening on radio, and I continued the habit in 2000. There was one specific game that summer in which I got hooked and decided from then on I wanted to follow the team regularly and watch or listen to every game, which I managed to do (with only a few minor lapses) for about the next five years.
Favorite A’s game memory of all time: That one game was Barry Zito’s debut, against the Angels. I was in the car, listening on the radio. In the top of the fifth Barry loaded the bases, with Mo Vaughn, Garret Anderson, and Tim Salmon coming up. He went on to strike out all three. The A’s had gained a big lead in the inning before, so it wasn’t quite as dramatic as it sounds. Still, that was the moment that I really got into it and became hooked. (I also liked the Randy Velarde triple play, which I had seen on TV only a few weeks before that.)
Most heartbreaking A’s experience: None. Heartbreak is for real life. Baseball only gives me joy.
Favorite A’s player (current and past): Eric Chavez, Nick Swisher, Frank Thomas, Gio Gonzalez
Greatest all-time A: Rickey (duh)
Last time you went to an A’s game / stadium: Safeco, not sure when. Probably 2006 or 2007. Even in Oakland I didn’t go to the stadium much. I’m a bad fan that way.
Opposing team, player/manager you dislike the most: Roger Clemens. In theory I hate the Yankees, but it’s more a formality than a passion. I’m not really into the disliking thing.
Random interactions with A’s players: None, but I once knew a girl who had gone to parties that the Giambis hosted, and she dished some dirt.
Most cherished piece of A’s memorabilia you have: None. I don’t do memorabilia.
What’s the best part of being an A’s fan: Oh, I don’t know. It’s fun.

Oh, nothing so specific, just her general impression.

She was something of a party girl, and she had the sort of looks that make a girl instantly popular in such crowds. She was never an all-out facelickgirl type groupie, but she did like to go out and have fun sometimes. She enjoyed the aggressive attentions of confident young men, and she had the sort of savvy to hold her own among them.

She was mid-20s when I knew her, and having grown up in Danville she had encountered plenty of baseball players during the summers. As a group in general, she spoke fondly of baseball guys and said she thought they were fun. And yet, even within that context, she said she thought both of the Giambis were no-class douches.

It’s just one woman’s opinion, and for anyone hearing it from me, it’s third-hand gossip. Still, I found it interesting that she singled them out.

Favorite part of AN: The banter, the sarcasm and humor, and the learning of the Sabermetrics. Really, everyone on here is awesome.

How you became an A’s fan: How could I not be? Bonding experience with my dad as a kid, but he let me pick whether I wanted to be an A’s or Giants fan. He was Oakland all the way, and I wasn’t stupid.

Favorite A’s game memory of all time:
-In person would have to be Harden’s 2nd to last start with us, when he gave up 2 bloop singles in 7 or 8 innings. Most dominant pitching performance I’ve ever seen.
-On the radio has to be every single “Holy Toledo” I heard from King growing up, and especially Hatteberg’s game 20 walk off.
-On TV was Braden’s perfect game this year. I went nuts. Plus it was one of the craziest and most backwards days of my life…

Most heartbreaking A’s experience: Losing all those game 3-5’s. Every single year a friend and I said we would watch a playoff game if they made the ALCS. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it in 2006.

Favorite A’s player (current and past): Dallas Braden (never seen a player spend more time with the fans) /and, believe it or not, Brent Gates and Mike Bordick

Hometown: Truxton, NY / Homer, NY; currently Hoboken, NJ

Story behind your screen name: i wasted all my good screenname ideas on AIM back in college

Favorite part of AN: don’s scrapbooks and history lessons; deeper analysis than actual news outlets

How you became an A’s fan: Rickey. and the whole aura of the late 80s/early 90s teams. they were ass kickers and everybody knew it, especially stew

Favorite A’s game memory of all time: hmm obviously the 2006 ALDS was amazing after the several craptacular post-seasons before it, but also all the wins in both yankees series and the red sox series in those eventual series losses. at the times of the wins, it felt like the A’s were on top of the world, especially when zito did work at yankee stadium. and i witnessed some comeback win at yankee stadium from the front row of the second section of seats behind home plate back in roughly the 03-05 era. i was a little inebriated, so the details are fuzzy. the only reason we mosied on down there was because my friend was far drunker than me and we were trying to stay in view of the action while we exited the stadium pre-emptively before actually getting kicked out. good times…

Most heartbreaking A’s experience: all the playoff losses of the ’00s, and what seemed like an annual injury to a star pitcher right before or during the ALDS each of those years.

Favorite A’s player (current and past): don’t really have a favorite current player / Rickey

Greatest all-time A: Rickey

Last time you went to an A’s game / stadium: July 5 / Coliseum

Opposing team, player/manager you dislike the most: angels, yankees, mets, rangers, mariners, whoever the A’s are playing or are ina tight race with / a-rod, lackey, clemens, pierzinsky, k-rod, anybody who acts like k-rod after routine plays

Random interactions with A’s players: none, but i went to Rickey’s induction and Mike Birbiglia does a great bit where Eck is involved in the punch line

Most cherished piece of A’s memorabilia you have: the only thing i have is an old SI i bought on ebay with Rickey on the cover from one of his first couple of seasons. and 2 balls with A’s logos from the July 5th game (and an amway logo too! sweet ass sweet!)

What’s the best part of being an A’s fan: when they win, especially after not just bouncing to the braves or somebody when the A’s were weak in the mid-late ‘90s; the history/mystique of the franchise; a good reason to head out to cali on occasion, especially because oakland is awesome; also when they win, i know it was because of planning and good roster moves – the A’s have to be accountable for their spending. they can’t just go buy another $15M/year player if one $15M/year player doesn’t work out.

Greatest all-time player

I’ve tallied the votes so far and it looks like this:

Rickey = 25 votes

mentions two names, one of which is Rickey = 4 votes
[Bill Krueger, Jose Canseco, Lefty Grove, Jason Giambi]

names someone other than Rickey (?!?!?) = 3 votes
[Ben Grieve, Vida Blue, Mark McGwire]

My conclusion from this data is that Rickey doesn’t get enough respect. He wuz robbed!

Hometown: Saint Paul, Minn., currently living in Burlingame which I don’t much care for.
Story behind your screen name: Scott Hatteberg was an English major and he was my favorite active player at the time I joined AN. the name works for me because I am the sort of person who could have been an English major, except that I had already been an art history major and disliked having to analyze paintings instead of enjoying them, and didn’t want to do the same with novels.

Add to the list of things that

are a pain in the rear for mods, though you’d never know it as a non-mod: extra long usernames.

Several of the mod display screens use tables where the username is one column. If the username is a mile long, all the other columns squish up tiny. So, for example, if you flag someone and write a two sentence comment about it, and you have a 35-character username, then your comment shows up as a few characters per line and half a screen high and it’s really hard to read.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

by iglew on Aug 26, 2010 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

That's one solution.

Another would be to redo the code generating those tables to truncate them when needed. I’ve never had any problem with long usernames outside of my mod duties.

It’s nice not to add more restrictions than really needed. To a certain extent we trust users to have good judgment. I’m not even sure what the max username length is, but no one abuses it too badly.

Same idea with siglines. It’s possible to make your sigline miles long, but fortunately no one is so obnoxious to do so.

In the days before the Internet, we had postal communities. In the postal world there are no screen names to hide behind. I suppose you could get a P.O. Box and pseudonym, but 99% of the participants used their real names and home addresses.

There were still feuds, many of which were extremely bitter and nasty. Some lasted for more than a decade.

Interesting

I suspect a setup like that would not be applicable to every internet community.

Wargamers certainly can be a fractious lot. I’ve played Warhammer, and various other board games live and lost my voice for a day. Online it could be worse. Also, an online gaming community would want to avoid sockpuppets strongly. Having a mole on the other side could be a huge problem, and not just for uncivil words.

Wearing: A Batman tee shirt and no pants or underpants

Listening To: Looped Recording of man sawing off own leg with an electric knife.

Story behind your screen name: Read it in a book.

Favorite part of AN: All the AN ladies attention, if you know what I mean. It’s because I’m so fucking funny, too. Can’t be my good looks or awesome physique. Damn, I rock.

How you became an A’s fan: A’s fan by birth, Yankees hater by choice.

Favorite A’s game memory of all time: Miggy with walk-off bookend wins versus Yankees in ’03, winning the series in ’89, 20 wins!

Most heartbreaking A’s experience: When that guy hit that homerun off Eck, Miggy with bad base running, Jeter heroics/Little G not sliding, Byrnes not touching home

Favorite A’s player (current and past): Dallas Braden/Rickey followed closely by Eck

Greatest all-time A: Rickey

Last time you went to an A’s game / stadium: Last Saturday night / Coliseum—I got Don drunk.

Opposing team, player/manager you dislike the most: In order: Yankees, Red Sox, Giants, Angels, Rangers. White Sox would piss me off but they’re the also-ran in their hometown, too and us mutts gotta stick together.

Random interactions with A’s players: I don’t think I’ve ever met a player.

Most cherished piece of A’s memorabilia you have: I don’t really collect things. A lot like Tom Bombadil, occasionally, I’ll get something and soon as not, I’ll give it away or lose track of it. The easiest way to get something of mine is to tell me you like it.

What’s the best part of being an A’s fan: What a stupid fucking question. I’m not answering it, Don. What? [sigh] Fine. [spoken in bratty monotone] It’s being with you fine people here. What an honor. That, and free squirrels.

It's actually a serious situation

The US Treasury has made very substantial changes to the design of the bills over the last 10 years or so — the main point was to make them harder to counterfeit. They started with the $100 and $20 because they’re the most popular black market currency in the world, evidently. Each bill they’ve revised has had a sort of transitional version (bigger portrait is the main feature) and then a final version — they’ve got all kinds of micro-printing, weird semi-visible stuff and sensor-sensitive things woven into the material of the bills, new ink. The whole 9 yards.

What they didn’t do was add any color or change the sizes. There were proposals for that, but in our country’s charming, xenophobic way, people apparently thought that the bills looked “foreign” if they had any color other than green or had any unusual dimensions. So, sorry people with macular degeneration or cataracts or something — guess you’ll have to depend on the kindness of strangers to make sure you don’t hand over a $20 as “exact change” when you buy some M&Ms.

"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s

by Nick on Aug 26, 2010 10:43 AM PDT up reply actions

Part of that is they'd have to update the machines used

And vending machines and other machines that currently accept specific sized currency would be messed up too. Any change in the money is very, very expensive. But yeah, they should have done that.

They have also considered holes in the bills

have different small punchouts depending on the denomination.

no holes == old bill
one corner = 1$, etc
adjacent corers = 5
opposite corners = 10
3 corners = 20
4 corners = 100
or some such.

by MobiusKlein on Aug 26, 2010 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmm...

The only concern there is that you can punch holes in them yourself. It would then be able to trick machines and/or blind people if you punched the holes yourself. You might have to reverse the holes so that the more holes it has the less value. Maybe. I guess you could also cover the holes as well.

This part is incorrect:
What they didn’t do was add any color or change the sizes.

Although all bills are still predominantly green, there’s quite a bit more color on them than there used to be. For example, the $5 has the big purple numeral on the back. The front of the $20 has the bluish eagle in the background on the left and some gold numerals on the right.

He's probably not a millionaire right now

If he’s saved every penny he’s made from playing baseball, after taxes, agent fees, and union dues he’s made just over a million (with his signing bonus when drafted). That assumes no cost of living at all.

Of course, once he gets more of the signing bonus money (and as the next few years come and go) he’ll certainly be a millionaire, but I’m okay with him making it rain 1 dollar bills at this point.

I would think he'd have his full bonus by now

IIRC he was drafted and signed in mid-2006. Even if he got the two-sport deferred bonus arrangement (and I don’t think he did— seriously, can you imagine Brett Anderson playing another sport?) it would be paid out by now.

"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.

I think JD's 2nd paragraph refers to the extension.

Brett has his full original signing bonus from Arizona when they drafted him.

The $1m signing bonus that came with his recent A’s contract extension was specified to come in four $250K installments, of which he’s received only one so far.

Doris Day was a hottie.

Also, I’m totally freaked out by the one on the right. Her dress blends in to Brett’s shirt, and her arm blends in to the background wall. The result is that she looks like she’s a disembodied head while her cleavage does a Necker cube trick so that it looks like it’s somebody’s elbow.

by iglew on Aug 26, 2010 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I feel like I'm too young to understand your comparison

I checked Wikipedia for Doris Day, and I’m going to say your statement makes sense as either:
“make FaceLickGirl look attractive” or “make FaceLickGirl look wholesome”

by rrryanc on Aug 26, 2010 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

The latter, surely

Doris Day has a reputation for always being a good girl, since she played several such characters in movies. Her name is frequently used in this context. See, for example, the song in Grease, where they make funny of Sandy by comparing her to Doris Day.

This is not entirely fair to the real Doris. That’s not to say she was a bad girl, because she wasn’t that either, but she was far more interesting as an actress and as a celebrity than the cliché gives her credit for.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

by iglew on Aug 26, 2010 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I was leaning that way – wikipedia mentions her image as “the girl next door,” but the fact that she was married 4 times and looking back it seems like every actress from that era was “wholesome,” I wasn’t entirely sure.

Astrophil and Stella 98

Ah bed, the field where joy’s peace some do see,
The field where all my thoughts to war be trained!
How is thy grace by my strange fortune strained!
How thy lee shores by cares storméd be!
With sweet, soft shades thou oft invitest me
To steal some rest, but wretch I am contrained
Spurred with love’s spur, though galled and shortly reined
With care’s hard hand to to turn and toss in thee.
While the black horrors of the silent night
Paint woe’s black face so lively to my sight
That tedious leisure marks each, wrinkled line;
But when Aurora leads out Phoebus’ dance
Mine eyes then only wink, for spite perchance
That worms should have their sun, and I want mine.

“contrained” in line 6 should read “constrained”. Sorry, Phil!

storméd?

With the accent?

by elcroata on Aug 26, 2010 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions

It's a modern convention of printing poetry in English

to use accents to indicate that a syllable is pronounced, rather than elided into the previous one (similar to the way that silent "e"s are pronounced in French poetry). In modern, colloquial English, “stormed” is one syllable. In this poem, “trained” and “strained” are pronounced as one syllable, while “storméd” has two, distinct syllables — “STOR-med.” Confusingly, the emphasis in the word is still on the first syllable, despite the accent over the “e”. In situations when the final “ed” is elided into the preceding syllable, you sometimes see an apostrophe in place of the “e” to emphasize that the elision.

by elcroata on Aug 26, 2010 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Shouldn't the accent be on the "m" then since that's where you're making the syllable break?

Seems to me "storméd" would then be “storm-ed” instead.

Was that for me? since I confessed

my favorite part of AN is the poetry? In all my years on AN probably the best thing I’ve gotten from it was the day you turned me on to John Donne.

Your poem reminds me of one that I memorized years ago. Let’s see if I can get it all right:

Weary with toil, I haste me to my bed,
The dear repose for limbs with travel tired.
But then begins a journey in my head
To work my mind, when body’s work’s expired.
For then my thoughts, from far where I abide,
Intend a zealous pilgrimage to thee,
And keep my drooping eyelids open wide,
Looking on darkness which the blind do see.
Save that my soul’s imaginary sight
Presents thy shadow to my sightless view
Which like a jewel hung in ghastly night
Makes black night beauteous and her old face new.
Lo, thus, by day my limbs, by night my mind,
For thee, and for myself, no peace I find.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

You know, I've just never really fallen in love with Shakespeare's Young Man sonnets

The Dark Lady sonnets are twisted and wonderful, but the Young Man sonnets almost all just seem…I dunno, slightly emotionless, dull, and rote. There are a few I like but I really don’t think those sonnets show him off very well. He’s reciting platitudes and being off-handedly clever more than anything else.

Fulke Greville wrote a sonnet (part of his Caelica sonnet sequence) about night and imagination that kicks that Shakespeare sonnet’s ass, as far as I’m concerned:

In night, when colors all to black are cast,
Distinction lost, or gone down with the light,
The eye, a watch to inward senses placed,
Not seeing, yet still having power of sight,
Gives vain alarums to the inward sense,
Where fear, stirred up with witty tyranny,
Confounds all powers, and through self-offense
Doth forge and raise impossibility,
Such as in thick depriving darknesses
Proper reflections of the error be,
And images of self-confusednesses,
Which hurt imaginations only see:—
And from this nothing seen, tell news of devils,
Which but expressions be of inward evils.

"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s

by Nick on Aug 26, 2010 5:33 PM PDT up reply actions

That one spoke to me when I was a young man.

I also like some of the phrases, like “my thoughts […] intend a zealous pilgrimage to thee”. But the only reason I still remember it is that some time in my early 20s I set the text to music.

I haven’t read them all, but I haven’t loved much at all among Shakespeare’s sonnets. His plays are much much better. I find so little life and joy in the sonnets.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

Real name (optional, but most do have one): Reade (yes, I know, it’s spelled ‘wrong’)

Occupation: lurking on comment threads, buying crap i don’t need, trying to get by on my ill-gotten gains from 30 years as a phoneman (PT&T,PacBell, Nynex, BellAtlantic, Verizon- yeech!)

Age: Do the math for Don, add 18. Old. Really old. Apparently the oldest here. On this thread, at least.

Gender: At my age, who can tell

Hometown: Not really. I was born in Idaho. Sandy Ego as a kid. ’Burbs of Long Island as a teenager. Kicked around a bit and ended up in Oakland in ’73. Left the Bay Area in ’91 for Western Massachusetts, now in Southern Oregon since 2007.

Story behind your screen name: I use some variation of ‘rhythmdog’ just about everywhere else. I guess I wanted something boring for AN. I think I nailed it…

Favorite part of AN: Living in the places I’ve lived the last 20 years, not too many
people ever really want to talk A’s! I like the stat stuff, the insider knowledge about the farm system, but easily my favorite ‘part’ is el croata. He is just too amazing to actually exist. Plays the game, knows the physics, has a Squirrels uni. As if a highly advanced alien had deigned to join AN. I read all his posts, but the most A-mazin’’ ever was his post about Coors and CarGone.

How you became an A’s fan: Moved to Oakland in ‘73. Loved the ’garish’ uni’s.

Favorite A’s game memory of all time: Lots and lots. In a way, my favorite is just any random summer day game, Lon and Bill on the radio, me doing something in the yard with the game on… Braden’s perfecto was a pretty awesome TV memory. As was the fans chanting “MAR-co. [pause] SCOO-taro” – was that ALDS vs. Sox? Clemens blowing up… George Brett going ballistic… Rickey driving the pitchers crazy…

Most heartbreaking A’s experience: When that guy gimp hit that homerun off Eck, just after some TV dweeb pointed out Eck hadn’t allowed a HR since August. Followed closely by ’Get DOWN, Jermy". Followed by numerous trades: Reggie, Miggy, Big three, Swish…

Favorite A’s player (current and past): Right now, I’d go Trevor / Miggy, Stew, Eck, Rickey, Dwayne, early Bash Brothers, Reggie, Rollie, Campy

Greatest all-time A: Rickey

Last time you went to an A’s game / stadium: mid-90’s. At Fenway. We won. I wasn’t popular…

Opposing team, player/manager you dislike the most: Yankees, A-rod, Bochy (because he’s probably the only manager I wouldn’t trade Geren for)

Random interactions with A’s players: Went to some charity dinner once where Eck was the speaker…

Most cherished piece of A’s memorabilia you have: memories

What’s the best part of being an A’s fan: Being part of the best-kept secret in baseball, that the A’s have really hard-core, knowledgeable fans…

Favorite A’s game memory of all time: Winning money from my future Uncle on a Jason Kendall homerun. As a family, we do dollar bets on who’s going to hit the first homerun. I’ve been money the last few years, but the Kendall time took the cake. I had originally chosen Cust, who jacked the first homerun. So my uncle goes double or nothing on me, and Cust jacks another one. At this point, I’m feeling bad for him, so I take Kendall, who hadn’t hit a homerun in about 10,000 plate appearances. Next time he came up to bat, Bam!
Most heartbreaking A’s experience: I wasn’t old enough to appreciate the walkoff off of Eck, so without a doubt it’s the non-slide and goddamn Jeter.
Favorite A’s player (current and past): Cust and Chavvy
Greatest all-time A: Rickey
Last time you went to an A’s game / stadium: July 10th, against the Angels.
Opposing team, player you dislike the most: Boston, Yankees and Angels. Curt Schilling, even though he doesn’t play anymore.
Random interactions with A’s players: None.
Most cherished piece of A’s memorabilia you have: Got my PTBNL jersey, but that’s about it.
What’s the best part of being an A’s fan: Moneyball. I mean, I liked the A’s before it was revealed that they had intelligent management.

AN is really a technological masterpiece

What we’re asking is for people to stop pretending that ipse dixit counts as a "source." When you make a claim about baseball, you should be willing to put some reasonable amount of effort into explaining why it’s correct if someone asks you to. That’s basic respect for the other poster. - PT

I mean it was like 8 bucks

And I bought the next round of beers, so pretty much a wash from a financial standpoint.

But I certainly have to be one of a very limited number of people in the world that have made money betting on Kendall to hit a homerun.

Favorite part of AN: The mix. Great articles to read, quality readers forcing you to think before you write, both funny and informative.
How you became an A’s fan: Started as a Yankees fan, as my first contact with baseball happened in Syracuse, NY. I would call the rest evolution.
Favorite A’s player (current and past): Chavez. / Hudson / Stewart
Greatest all-time A: Rickey
Last time you went to an A’s game / stadium: If ST counts 2009, if not – pfheew, a long time, I guess May 2003…
Opposing team, player/manager you dislike the most: Yankees [Red Sox] fans who, after learning you don’t root for their team, go on and say: Ah, so you’re a Red Sox [Yankees] fan, then. White Sox announcers. Pierzynski, Clemens, Schilling
Most cherished piece of A’s memorabilia you have: I don’t really have much. I don’t think Piazza baseball really counts as one. But I have a funny story on Mariners, though, and I’ll just write that one instead. My best man’s wife is something very important in the boyscouts organization, I think European lead or something. So she often travels to the meetings and events and my buddy comes along when he can. She is a rarity as most everybody else out there is a freakin’ millionaire and the talks during dinners often go to the last golf round they had with the president or the last lunch they had in White House. So, here they are, Danijel and Lidija, mingling before a dinner in a luxurious Hong Kong hotel, just one in the chain belonging to the Asian boyscouts lead. Everybody is acting real cool and casual, yet Danijel, my buddy and ex teammate, is little freaked out for lack of conversation topics. Finally he spots a dude with a Mariners hat, relaxes, goes over and says: Hi, I’m Danijel, you’re a Mariners fan, right?, to which the dude responds Hi, I’m Wayne and actually I own the team. And he goes on and gives him his calling card that simply said: Seattle Mariners, Wayne Perry, Owner. talk about getting straight to the point. We gave it to my friend who is a huge Mariners fan, so it’s neither my memorabilia nor the A’s. I can’t keep on topic, I know.

Screen name: Wes7

Real name (optional): Surely you’re not that dense. Surely.

Occupation: Records Coordinator in the office of undergraduate admission at a major university that is nowhere near as mysterious as I make it out to be.

Age: 28

Gender: Dude

Hometown: Arcata, California, but currently living in (and loving) Oakland.

Story behind your screen name: Transparency, baby! Okay, transparency and the fact that I was 7 when I went to my first A’s game. (Which happened to be the year that the A’s last won the World Series.)

Favorite part of AN: The camaraderie between all of us here doesn’t hurt, but really, it’s the amazing food options at the tailgates.

How you became an A’s fan: My older brother became a fan of the Bash Brothers and the team in the late 80s. Wanting to emulate him in just about every respect, I followed suit.

Favorite A’s game memory of all time: Sweeping the Twins of the playoffs (and shutting up my buddy Adam) in the 2006 ALDS.

Most heartbreaking A’s experience: Game 3 of the 2001 ALDS. It’s still the only A’s playoff game that I’ve gone to. (Surely my luck with them will get better, right? Right?

Favorite A’s player (current and past): Andrew Bailey/Rickey Henderson

Greatest all-time A: Rickey. A man whose skills never failed to leave me absolutely astounded.

Last time you went to an A’s game / stadium: Friday, August 6th at the Coliseum. (Something about some cool girl’s birthday party.)

Opposing team, player/manager you dislike the most: The Red Sox are easily the team that I hate the most, but it’s the Yankee players (particularly A-Rod) who drive me up the wall. I don’t really dislike any manager, but I wouldn’t call myself a fan of Mike Sciosia’s.

Random interactions with A’s players: Adam Kennedy bought me a beer at a bar after an A’s-White Sox game in Chicago last year. And it wasn’t that random (seeing as how it was an A’s event), but meeting Rickey at Dinner on the Diamond in 2008 was a thrill and a half.

Most cherished piece of A’s memorabilia you have: I don’t have a lot of memorabilia to speak of, but I do enjoy adding to my A’s bobblehead collection. Yes, I’m a nerd.

What’s the best part of being an A’s fan: The rich history (that the team really should tap into more), and the influence of “Moneyball.”

Favorite part of AN: The good nicknames, the good stats-related posts that have all kinds of graphs and charts I barely understand
How you became an A’s fan: I read Moneyball. Then Kenny Williams kept putting Carl Everett’s dumb ass on the White Sox.
Favorite A’s game memory of all time: The A’s extra innings win against the White Sox on a hot July day in 2005. First game I attended as an A’s fan.

Favorite part of AN: Well-written posts, and generally speaking, the informed nature of the userbase. Also get a kick out of the wit and humor.

How you became an A’s fan: Got it from my mom and dad, but always liked the A’s.

Favorite A’s game memory of all time: Making the ALCS in 2006, and pretty much any start by either Tim Hudson or Mark Mulder in their tenures with the A’s.

Most heartbreaking A’s experience: The postseasons of just about every year this decade. Mulder trade, and coincidentally enough, the Haren trade as well.

Favorite A’s player (current and past): Hitters: D-Bart/Tejada, Pitching: Anderson/Mulder

Greatest all-time A: Rickey, (although to be fair to my mother, Catfish Hunter is up there too).

Last time you went to an A’s game / stadium: Last year, and I hate that it’s been that long.

Opposing team, player/manager you dislike the most: Goodness, where do I start? I detest everything about the Angels, Yankees, Red Sox, and Giants. I don’t think I can understate just how much I hate those teams and their associated players and managers.

Random interactions with A’s players: At past FanFest events, I’ve met Swisher, Haren, Barton, Harden, Kotsay, Holliday, and a number of others.

Most cherished piece of A’s memorabilia you have: My autographed baseball from the past 4 FanFests.

What’s the best part of being an A’s fan: This site is a huge part, but also the fact that we normally make the most out of the least.

Jon Miller - "Meanwhile, Joe has found the garlic fries in the booth, and I don't think we'll hear any insight from him for a while."

Orel Hershiser - "Is that really such a bad thing?"

You can bring a 40 and smoke a cigarette and call me from the parking lot asking me what time the game is, and I'll tell you. You can even say 'F--- you, Steve!' Actually, don't say that, that wouldn't be very nice." -Steve Friend, Head Coach, Chabot College Gladiators Baseball

well

my walls go from green for the fence to yellow for the home run line to sky blue. i had astroturf for carpet for years, but it got way too hard to clean, so that kinda takes away from the full effect. i used to have a loft bed that was all painted yellow to match the top of the fence. never put clouds on the ceiling though, or the distances on the fence either. and certainly not the comcast logo, etc.

I'll give this a whirl even though it's old

Screen name: el generico

Real name (optional): Louis

Occupation: Formerly and in the future – environmental geologist. Currently – International Man of Leisure

Age: 31

Gender: Yes please! Oh, wait, that doesn’t work so well on this one. . .

Hometown: Born in Oakland, currently in Geneva, Switzerland

Story behind your screen name: Couldn’t think of anything cool, so thought of something bland.

Favorite part of AN: The passion of the community, the discussions of what SHOULD be done vs. what WILL be done, all the fabulous off-topic posts, and the regular crew that keeps me coming back.

How you became an A’s fan: None of my family was really into baseball, but my parents though I should at least be exposed to baseball. Took me to a game in 1986, and I really liked it. Plus, I read like a mo-fo during the summer, and the A’s let you buy one dollar upper-deck tickets if you read enough books from the Oakland library. Great deal for a family of four. Have now turned my mom into a rabid A’s fan, and haven’t looked back since.

Favorite A’s game memory of all time: Too many, but Canseco’s grand slam in the 1980 WS (my dad jumped so high he cut his hand on our ceiling fan), and getting to see the A’s clinch the 2006 ALDS from a CF luxury box with a bunch of A’s fans.

Most heartbreaking A’s experience: The walk-off by Gimpson, the entirety of the 2006 ALCS, trading Swisher.

Favorite A’s player (current and past): Tough ones, but Dave Stewart, Rickey Henderson, Mark McGwire previously, probably Kurt Suzuki currently, although Daric Barton is right up there. Eric Chavez will always have a place in my heart.

Greatest all-time A: Rickey (Iglew is right, Rickey was robbed!)

Last time you went to an A’s game / stadium: Um, end of July vs. the Red Sox, shortly before I moved out of the Bay Area. Went with a good friend who is a Red Sox fan (but is really annoyed by other Red Sox fans), and watched Ben Sheets last start as an Athletic.

Opposing team, player/manager you dislike the most: there aren’t really players or managers that I strongly dislike, but can I put Angels/Red Sox/Yankees FANS on this list?

Random interactions with A’s players: none really, although my neighbor growing up was a guy who went to high school with Stew (St. Elizabeth’s).

Most cherished piece of A’s memorabilia you have: Don’t have much memorabilia, but my oldest friend in the world gave me a Zito jersey a few years back (2006), and it’s got a lot of sentimental attachment.

What’s the best part of being an A’s fan: The A’s consistently attract the highest quality fans, and have inexpensive tickets, and give back to the community. I saw a clip on Comcast where Jerry Blevins went for a blimp ride with some underprivileged kids from the East Bay, and I teared up.
