A's Go Deep Thrice, Gio Tosses 7 Scoreless in 5-0 Win
It appears that a few A's hitters read my pre-cap in which I poked fun at their power numbers, or lack thereof.
Well, the joke is surely on me after home runs by Jeff Larish, Coco Crisp, and Jack Cust fueled a 5-0 whitewashing of the Tribe.
Hey, whatever works, right?
The beneficiary of Oakland's outburst was Gio Gonzalez who worked in and out of danger for three of the seven innings he was on the mound. The first jam was not his doing as a trio of A's errors- two on one play by Larish- put runners at second and third with two outs in the second. Gio was wise to take matters into his own hands, and he struck out Trevor Crowe to end the frame unscathed. Gonzalez- who recorded 7 K's to just one walk (and a hit batter)- didn't allow a hit until the fourth.
While the two-run homer by Larish- his first in green and gold- proved to be all the scoring the A's would need, they added two more long balls for good measure. Crisp- who is sizzling after a 3-for-5 night that included his 22nd stolen base and two runs scored- hit a solo shot in the fifth. Cust connected in the seventh with a man on, his tenth on the year.
And we're back at .500.
Fly true, my little friends.

OMG offense.
"Carter's 25-game hitting streak isn't any normal streak. He's 46 for 97 (.474 average) during the run, adding 16 walks and compiling 81 total bases in the process. I'm out of superlatives for what he's doing." - Kevin Goldstein

no
teams put pretty much every player on waivers, that doesn’t mean anything.

I'm aware that lots of teams put players on waivers
but why play Carter at 1st? I’m just trying to connect the potential dots in Beane-land. It could be to keep Carter ‘flexible’ at multiple positions, but one never knows.
Geren is managing AAA now?
I like Cardenas’s numbers in August. His slugging is pretty low, but he has a good average and good OBP. He’ll come around.

i found slusser's tweets to be strangely depressing tonight
The #Athletics have a 2.25 ERA over the past 22 games.
The #Athletics have allowed five runs or less in each of the past 22
games, the longest AL streak since the 1989 Angels (also 22).
and during that 22 game stretch of incredible pitching the a’s went from .500 and 8.5 behind the rangers to… .500 and 8.5 behind the rangers.

I'm definitely behind EN's "if they don't get some hitters for next year it's time to revolt" plan.
Pam liked my old sig better.

Yes, ESPN had some more depressing tidbits...
…our rotation has a 2.01 ERA in August, holding opponents to a .198 BAA, and the team is a sparkilng 11-11 for the month. Wow. A team with any sticks at all would be 18-4 getting that kind of pitching.
two bats
They don’t need the league’s best offense – just add two legitimate bats to the lineup – consistent production – and you’ve got a team that could go deep in the playoffs.
It is amazing to see this rotation develop as advertised, even a little fast. If only Carter, Taylor and Cardenas could do the same.
This is a good point, and good perspective
While we’re rightly complaining about the failure of our hitting prospects (and our no-longer-prospects, like Buck and Zook) let’s just recognize what an amazing job this team has done developing young pitchers. In the last 2 years, Gio, Anderson, Cahill, Bailey, Mazzaro, and Breslow have developed into effective to dominant pitchers, and Ziggy and Braden have developed over the last 3 years or so. Henry Rodriguez has also taken big steps forward this year. Simmons is the only highly-touted young pitchers who’s been a bust. That’s a pretty remarkable track record.

Good game by the looks of it
Kurt Suzuki should not be allowed to bat for a few days. The guy is a detriment to the offense at the moment. Should be on the bench for awhile. He is not helping. Let Powell behind the plate
I second that
He looks miserable.
And he looks like he’s miserable too

Keep at it
It appears that a few A’s hitters read my pre-cap in which I poked fun at their power numbers, or lack thereof.
Do it every pre-cap. It might be just the right fuel mixture for that offense explosion.

Anybody think there's anything to Larish starting at 3B tonight?
I’m wondering if they’re gonna give him a good amount of starts at 3B over the remainder of the season in hopes that he’ll show himself to be ‘adequate’ defensively (I know, the double error tonight was hideous) thus making it all the more likely Kouz isn’t brought back next year.
I could see them giving him a serious look
though I don’t know if it would be for that specific reason (replacing Kouz). They certainly want to know whether he seems like a legit major-league power hitter. It could involve him playing more at 1B or DH (I know, 2 of the A’s 3 better-than-suck hitters are at those positions already…), for all we know.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
don't really think so
Just giving Kouz a day off since he’s been hitting about like Suzuki. With Geren as manager, I predict Kouz back out there tonight and Larish forgotten on the bench.
do you belive the 'hot hand' theory
or that larish doesn’t have many HRs in him, so he’s probably used all his HRs for the month up.
