I am a good teacher - but I was in Spec Ed and that is a tough world. Way more paperwork than when I started lo these many years ago.
I still do presentations so get to teach….but I am a good counselor, too.

Being a counselor is important...I had a terrible one in HS

I hate to tell kids they shouldn't think about college.....everybody should think about college!!!
"Are those new tarps? Or did they paint 'em?" Mark Ellis
I don't know about that
I’ve known plenty of people that college was a bad idea. Others who should have waited a while before going to college. None are stupid. And all had a chance to have a perfectly normal, successful life.

Don't get me wrong......it may not be 4 year for everyone...I just don't want kids to give up their dreams.
I want them to think about how they can still make it happen IF they want to.
"Are those new tarps? Or did they paint 'em?" Mark Ellis
Well, yeah
Definitely encourage them to follow their dream and find what will make them successful in life, whatever that may be. Sometimes that really isn’t about college.

What DMOAS said. A major league contract means that the player is immediately put on the 40 man
Normally it’s 3 or 4 seasons after being drafted before a player has to be put on the 40 man or risk being taken in the rule 5 draft.
However in this case it basically means that he’s put straight on the 40 man, and the important bit is that he’s got to be optioned to the minor leagues every year — so when he’s 20 he’ll be out of options, and it’s pretty much guaranteeing that he’ll be in the big leagues by that time or else he’ll be put on waivers.
Pam liked my old sig better.
Ah, thanks guys.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
by lenscrafters on Aug 16, 2010 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions
Easiest way to view it:
Bryce Harper now has a 3 year timeline to make the big leagues or else he’ll have to be waived because he’ll be out of options.
There’s more to it, but that’s the most basic most important thing to know when draftees sign major league deals.
Pam liked my old sig better.
what if he's not ready after three years but
still has the major upside, do the nats get screwed? is there anyway they can keep him

he was good for like a month in 2007
Then the other clubs watched the tape and made adjustments to which Buck, a notoriously uncoachable player, has never adjusted back for.
If we’re talking about Travis Buck as a legitimate option for the A’s outfield in 2011, with tens of millions of dollars coming off the books that could go towards actual major league baseball players, then I dunno why I’m here, honestly I should just move to Amsterdam or Auckland and get it over with already.

he's not going to regain his nythical Willie mays with long hair form of 2007
Stop fantasizing about that.

But he could.
I don’t know that. You don’t know that. Billy, Bob, David, any of them, they don’t know what Buck will do. There’s a small chance he could. So why not figure out what we’ve got internally, before blowing a huge chunk of change on an external option? By testing him out now, we’re losing nothing, but possibly gaining a whole lot. There’s no risk. Why not?
so it's worth letting Carter go to Sac
it’s worth it to let the guy who IS supposed to be your future have to give 3 interviews a day about how he went 0-19? So a has-been that barely ever was can have OPTIONS for a year when you’re not even going to NEED him?

If you’re going to say “Carter is the future and Buck isn’t so why is Buck up instead” you have to explain who should be getting the shot instead. If Carter shouldn’t be up right now, that eliminates the supposed conflict of bringing Buck up unless you’re suggesting a 3rd party should be getting the opportunity instead.

He’s got Geren running the team and people think he’s a genius.
It’s bordeline criminal that you have a team leading the AL in ERA and one that the starters have gone 3 and 6 with an ERA around 1.50.
He should be embarrassed to show his face around any of the fan base at the park.
That is all. I just have to laugh at the ineptitude of the guy. He builds half a team and it took him from 2007 to get this far.

Eric Patterson has been a better hitter than Kevin Kouzmanoff this season.
I knew Kouzmanoff wasn’t a good hitter, but I’m really disappointed in him offensively. He does rank third in WAR among our position players, though.

Not all.
Just the ones that don’t really have great strikeout/walk numbers, but then again, most pitchers that don’t have great strikeout/walk numbers don’t do very well anyway, regardless of groundball/flyball/whatever.

Well with almost as many starts as dominating pitchers like

It's a stat used to measure luck if I remember correctly.
High BABIP numbers are not sustainable for hitters and low ones are not sustainable for pitchers, I think.

Batting average on balls in play.
If you ignore HRs, Ks, and BBs, how are hitters hitting? It’s not a measure of skill, usually, but one of luck. Average is around .300.
ok so it's like how good your defense plays?

That's part of it,
but it’s more about getting lucky about balls hit right at fielders and stuff.
For the record, the lowest last year was .257.
Oh, and groundball pitchers don't usually have a lower than usual BABIP.
Grounders tend to turn into a hit more than flies (excluding HR flies, of course).
And for all I'm concerned, Cahill will be the BABIP pioneer.

Actually 95% is probably generous. More like 99.something.
Cahill is second in ERA, second in WHIP and first in BAA.
I have to think he’s in the Cy Young discussion even if he shouldn’t win it. Those are three very mainstream statistics. The record is good enough. The only thing he’s missing are the strikeouts.
