I still do presentations so get to teach….but I am a good counselor, too.

I don't know about that

I’ve known plenty of people that college was a bad idea. Others who should have waited a while before going to college. None are stupid. And all had a chance to have a perfectly normal, successful life.

What DMOAS said. A major league contract means that the player is immediately put on the 40 man

Normally it’s 3 or 4 seasons after being drafted before a player has to be put on the 40 man or risk being taken in the rule 5 draft.

However in this case it basically means that he’s put straight on the 40 man, and the important bit is that he’s got to be optioned to the minor leagues every year — so when he’s 20 he’ll be out of options, and it’s pretty much guaranteeing that he’ll be in the big leagues by that time or else he’ll be put on waivers.

Pam liked my old sig better.

Ah, thanks guys.

"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."

by lenscrafters on Aug 16, 2010 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Easiest way to view it:

Bryce Harper now has a 3 year timeline to make the big leagues or else he’ll have to be waived because he’ll be out of options.

There’s more to it, but that’s the most basic most important thing to know when draftees sign major league deals.

Pam liked my old sig better.

Then the other clubs watched the tape and made adjustments to which Buck, a notoriously uncoachable player, has never adjusted back for.

If we’re talking about Travis Buck as a legitimate option for the A’s outfield in 2011, with tens of millions of dollars coming off the books that could go towards actual major league baseball players, then I dunno why I’m here, honestly I should just move to Amsterdam or Auckland and get it over with already.

But why not give it a shot?

If he’s crap for the rest of this year, then screw it. But if he’s not—if he regains his 2007 form, then we’ve just gained a plus right fielder for nothing. More money can be spent elsewhere.

I don’t know that. You don’t know that. Billy, Bob, David, any of them, they don’t know what Buck will do. There’s a small chance he could. So why not figure out what we’ve got internally, before blowing a huge chunk of change on an external option? By testing him out now, we’re losing nothing, but possibly gaining a whole lot. There’s no risk. Why not?

If you’re going to say “Carter is the future and Buck isn’t so why is Buck up instead” you have to explain who should be getting the shot instead. If Carter shouldn’t be up right now, that eliminates the supposed conflict of bringing Buck up unless you’re suggesting a 3rd party should be getting the opportunity instead.

it's funny

as audio-only he sounded way more disinterested and “whatever” than on video, I guess 90% of communication IS non-verbal.

On the audio he sounded like “Yes, I am Roberto Clemente with blond hair, thank you.”

what was all this crap about trading Anderson to the Yankees?

It's true.

We’re getting Nick Swisher, Jesus Montero and Robinson Cano in exchange.

Gio Gonzalez is tied for 18th in WAR amongst American League pitchers.

He’s our third starter behind Brett Anderson and Trevor Cahill? That’s what I’m talkin’ about. At least we have that to look forward to.

by harensheir15 on Aug 17, 2010 12:23 AM PDT up reply actions

That version of WAR (which uses FIP) doesn't like Cahill very much.

And Anderson doesn’t have enough innings to qualify…but if he did, he’d be up there.

by danmerqury on Aug 17, 2010 12:24 AM PDT up reply actions

Not all.

Just the ones that don’t really have great strikeout/walk numbers, but then again, most pitchers that don’t have great strikeout/walk numbers don’t do very well anyway, regardless of groundball/flyball/whatever.

Does Cahill have an issue with k/bb ratio?

I think he’s using the curve as a pretty decent strikeout pitch.

At least leaps bounds better than he used to

His WHIP is 2nd in the entire MLB so...

Even with all the walks, nobody’s hitting anything off him.

Nope. They can't hit crap off him.

He’s brilliant…so far. The only question is if he’ll be able to sustain it.

by danmerqury on Aug 17, 2010 12:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Well with almost as many starts as dominating pitchers like

Jimenez and Price, I think he’s doing a swell job at sustenance.

What is BABIP.

by ElQuesoCapitan on Aug 17, 2010 12:36 AM PDT up reply actions

It's a stat used to measure luck if I remember correctly.

High BABIP numbers are not sustainable for hitters and low ones are not sustainable for pitchers, I think.

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on Aug 17, 2010 12:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Batting average on balls in play.

If you ignore HRs, Ks, and BBs, how are hitters hitting? It’s not a measure of skill, usually, but one of luck. Average is around .300.

by danmerqury on Aug 17, 2010 12:39 AM PDT up reply actions

ok so it's like how good your defense plays?

by ElQuesoCapitan on Aug 17, 2010 12:40 AM PDT up reply actions

That's part of it,

but it’s more about getting lucky about balls hit right at fielders and stuff.

For the record, the lowest last year was .257.

by danmerqury on Aug 17, 2010 12:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh, and groundball pitchers don't usually have a lower than usual BABIP.

Grounders tend to turn into a hit more than flies (excluding HR flies, of course).

by danmerqury on Aug 17, 2010 12:43 AM PDT up reply actions

And for all I'm concerned, Cahill will be the BABIP pioneer.

I really hope so,

but it’s probably a 95% shot that he’s not.

Actually 95% is probably generous. More like 99.something.

by danmerqury on Aug 17, 2010 12:42 AM PDT up reply actions

Cahill is second in ERA, second in WHIP and first in BAA.

I have to think he’s in the Cy Young discussion even if he shouldn’t win it. Those are three very mainstream statistics. The record is good enough. The only thing he’s missing are the strikeouts.

His BB numbers are pretty good, but his K numbers aren't.

5.18 K/9 isn’t so good, at all. Almost 2 K/9 below average.
