http://twitter.com/keithlaw
The draft deadline is this tonight here, Monday, August 16, at Midnight EST ( 9PM PST for non-NRAFs)
Michael Choice has signed, for 2MM, as outlined here. 2MM is also around recommended slot bonus for , so you want to think that this bodes well for signing Yordy Cabrera and the other over slot guys, Lewis and Shipman. A's need to break out the pocketbook
Cabrera and Shipman are must signs for the A’s, in my opinion, and Lewis would be an important sign, if not a must sign. I liked the A’s draft in a down talent year because of guys like Cabrera, Shipman, and Lewis. Without those guys, the A’s 2010 draft starts to look really thin.
strongly agree with this
there is no excuse for the A’s not to be aggressive in the draft and IFA markets.

It was obvious to Jackson, because he was right there, saw the ball hit the pole, and heard it clank off the metal.
Regardless of what he did, it was a home run. Even if he fielded the bounce and threw Bautista out, the umpires would have ruled it was a home run on instant replay. The play was over.
It is axiomatic that you play until the ump calls you off.
And Lord knows, they never, ever get a close call wrong, except about 20% of the time.

I've seen at least one replay call blown before, for what it's worth.

So whenever the ball goes over the fence
And you sees and hear it go over the fence. You expect the player to turn around and check to see if an ump over 100 feet away realized it? Cause odds are, you’re never going to actually hear the ump make the call.

It began with one of those “I’m sorry if you feel that way” style apologies that are absolutely maddening to their recipients. Insofar as any of them are personal attacks, they’re both culpable. Interesting theoretical question:
If someone were to now come along and call this post a personal attack, would that claim itself constitute a personal attack?
Consider: Calling DFA your mom is only an insult if your mother is a bad thing to be (and likewise for calling someone Conor Jackson’s mom, I suppose). Therefore if someone does say it was a personal attack for you to call DFA your mom, then he is implying that being your mom is a bad thing. Therefore he is insulting your mom, and that could be construed as a personal attack on you.

Yes...
Because if you KNOW you’re mom is something someone other than your mom would want to be (and I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t necessarily want to be his mom unless you actually are his mom), then you’d still be insulting that person. It’s more confusing (and possibly insulting of one’s own mom), but it’s still a personal attack. Just not a very good one.

It was clearly a home run. It not only looked like one (especially from a guy standing 1 foot away), but the sound made it totally obvious
I’m sorry, but it’s just damn stupid to expect a guy to play that ball. In fact, the ONLY reason he would have for doing it would be to try to be sneaky and do something unsportsmanlike to sell a play that he knew didn’t happen. How was he supposed to know the umpire didn’t see the play right?
I can’t think of any home run in the history of the damn sport where the outfielder knew the result and still looked to the umpire to be sure. That’s not how it works.

Remember that last off-season the Mets, Yankees and Red Sox, were all involved in OF acquisitions, but none
of them bid high on Holliday, who ended up with $17mm to stay with his current organization (less than Texeiera got, despite the fact Holliday is a better player). In addition to half-price, Beltran, I think payroll crunch is important to remember when considering the feasibility of signing Crawford or Werth. A lot of people have assumed these guys will end up on the Red Sox or Yankees, or that Crawford will get more than $20mm/year, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this is not the case. It also means that you might be able to squeeze a good deal out of a team like the Cubs, Dodgers or Mets in a trade. Assuming the A’s really do have $25mm or more to spend, the economic environment in baseball could really end up helping them out.
And I still think the odds of the A's landing Crawford are pretty remote, but my point is that when
your working in an environment where teams like the Cubs, Mets, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Orioles, Indians, Mariners, and Rangers are all likely sellers, and teams like the Red Sox and Phillies aren’t exactly big time buyers, you should be able to swing something good.

anyone else that you think probably won't sign that the a's should go after?
Based on your “draft druthers” posts I figure you probably follow this stuff closer than most of us. A short list would be nice to look at.
Also – if they don’t sign by the signing deadline, are they automatically FA’s? Do they just go to college? What is the process?
Thanks
by Billy Frijoles on Aug 16, 2010 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions
The A's can't really go after anyone
If a player doesn’t agree to a deal then they have to wait a year (or 3 for high schoolers attending college) and enter the draft again. I think there is a different procedure for college seniors who have graduated and don’t sign but that doesn’t really happen very much and isn’t much of a concern.
Other teams failing to sign their draft picks doesn’t really affect us other than allowing for a bit of schadenfreude due to a rival losing out on a potential valuable asset.
College seniors have a much later deadline to sign
The M’s didn’t have to sign Josh Fields until January or February of next year, IIRC.
Needs moar dingerz.
Actually not until the week before the draft
Some thought the new leadership would blow him off with a lowball offer and take the re-pick, but (unfortunately for them) they didn’t do that.
"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.
How come college players have to wait 3 years?
"You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."
I'm not sure how it came to be,
probably some agreement between NCAA and MLB to help programs keep their kids longer but if a high school kid enrolls at a 4-year college he is not eligible for the draft for another 3 years. There are some exceptions for older kids which leads to draft-eligible sophomores and in some rare cases draft-eligible freshmen, but for the most part high schoolers are making at least a 3 year commitment when they enroll at school.
Is it the same in basketball?
I know in American football you have to be three years removed from high school to be eligible – but in basketball/baseball (and I think ice hockey too) you can be drafted straight out of high school, so it’s weird that if you go to college you’re stuck there for 3 years.
"You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."
Basketball is different
A player isn’t eligible for the NBA draft until 1 year after his high school class graduates whether he goes to college or not. I don’t know how baseball got the idea that it’s okay to draft players out of high school but if they go to college you have to wait 3 years to get another shot at them. I’m guessing it has something to do with the NCAA because the waiting period doesn’t apply to junior colleges.
basketball use to be able to draft only after your juinor year.

When Magic Johnson left he had to declare "hardship"
"The ego, the super-ego, and the Ed" - dannycakes
Same with Isaiah Thomas, Moses Malone, Darrell Dawkins, IIRC
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
So what the hell does the player do for a year?
"You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."
Baseball has a long history...
…of having a legitimate player development system in place, whereas the other sports do not. At least not in any significant sense.
As far as the 3 year wait, I seem to recall reading something in one of Bill Veeck’s books about MLB working with colleges when starting the draft to try and make it work for both sides, though I forget the particulars.
Bob Geren... Jackie Moore without the personality.
They're almost never automatically FAs.
and it depends on NCAA eligibility whether they can play collegiate ball
For example, Tanner Scheppers was drafted in 2008 by the Pirates in the supp round and didn’t sign. However, since he had significant contact with an agent, he couldn’t go back to school, and had to go play independent ball for a year until the Rangers nabbed him.
However, with Zack Lee, I think the family is intentionally trying to avoid blatant agent contact, as to keep NCAA eligibility if Lee wants to play football or baseball at LSU. A player and his parents can directly negotiate with an MLB team that drafts him and still be NCAA eligible, but an agent can’t negotiate for them.
There is one loophole though, and that’s that Lee could have an “advisor” who tells him and his family what to do, but that advisor can’t represent him in negotiations. Scott Boras could be his advisor and he could still go to LSU as long as Boras didn’t negotiate with the Dodgers.
However, a HS player can go to a junior college and play even if he dealt with an agent, and be draft eligible, since I don’t think jucos are under NCAA regulations.
Needs moar dingerz.
Yeah this is the bigest crock of shit ever (were in a DLD right?)
They expect 17/18 yo kids to negotiate with fricking MLB half billion dollar teams and make the most important decision of their lives? The NCAA should absolutely allow for agents for the good of the players.
What we’re asking is for people to stop pretending that ipse dixit counts as a "source." When you make a claim about baseball, you should be willing to put some reasonable amount of effort into explaining why it’s correct if someone asks you to. That’s basic respect for the other poster. - PT

... you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
As has been repeatedly discussed on another thread, most players expend their entire signing bonus, and often actually lose money, just to try to make the major leagues. Which the vast majority never do.
"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.

Hate drafting is when you take a player you can’t sign so that someone else won’t be able to sign him for an overslot bonus.
Geren’s son was rather the opposite of a hate draft (a love draft?), in that no one but the A’s was remotely interested.

Scott Boras isn't dumb
Harper will get much more money going this year than he will next year when he will slip due to bonus demands and there will be many more elite talents.
Rizzo is a scout. His forte is the draft. This is the guy who drafted almost the entire DBacks’ core, and most of the prospects that got traded for Haren (I think all but Carter).
The Nationals have plenty of leverage, as two picks in the top 15 in next year’s draft, including the #2 overall pick, is MASSIVE and not really a big loss. Both sides have leverage.

I'm starting to get excited AJ-KJ
For a guy who’s a real TTO guy, many were worried he’d run into trouble with the K’s. 59:45 K:BB ratio is quite better than I think many expected.
Would like to see him moved to KC and start next year in Stockton

The ratio is nice but the K's are something to be concerned about
He is striking out in 32% of his at bats against short season pitchers, I don’t think he needs to be put on the fast track.
I try not to read to deeply into short season stats on recent draftees because it’s hard to tell how much the transition to professional ball is affecting a particular player. I do think Kirby-Jones will be fun to follow because he appears to be pretty much as advertised. It looks like he will K a lot, take a bunch of walks and has real power (.200+ iso in a tough hitting environment in Vancouver is very nice). All players have different development paths but it is worth remembering that most TTO guys like Dunn or Cust weren’t like that in the minors. It’s going to be a very tough road for a guy who strikes out that much in the low minors to ever make it to the majors.
I dn't worry because hes also walking something fierce
it would be interesting though to see if high K high BB turns out better than Med K Med BB

by designatedforassignment on Aug 16, 2010 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm still worried
He is definitely walking enough and showing enough power to make up for all the K’s but he’s got a lot of levels of minor league ball to get through. My impression is that as the quality of pitchers improves the natural tendency is for a hitters K-rate to rise while the BB-rate goes down. KJ is going to have to do a lot of work to maintain his current rates and he can’t afford much slippage.
Like I said above, I like to wait until after a guy has had a full off-season of instruction and acclimation to being a pro before coming to any conclusions but my gut feeling is that his contact issues make him a very long shot to make it to the big leagues.
Not sure where you got your percentage, but my calculations he should have a 24.6% K rate.
Which is still high, but not nearly as bad as 32%. Especially accompanied by that nice 18.8% BB rate.

I went with K/AB rather than K/PA
I’m not really sure what is the preferred way to look at prospect K rates but I thought it was clear in my comment that I was talking about percentage of his at bats.
I love me some AJ-KJ too
Definitely great to see him racking up the walks in Vancouver. For what it’s worth, he put up a massive OBP of .531 his last year in college (including 58 walks in 275 PA).
I would start him in KC next year. He’s only 21 (through the end of this year…DOB 10.2.88) so it’s not that he’s exceptionally old or anything. The dude is currently hitting .245/.404/.452 (.856 OPS). I wouldn’t even mind if he was a level a year guy in hopes that it would help him maintain (or improve) his current production. In that scenario he’d be in his first AAA season at age 25.
I completely agree with one of the posters here on AN as well (I think it was notsellingjeans)…develop/sign/etc a permanent DH. It’s a “position”. I want someone that can hit and get on base in this slot…not someone just filling in for the day to get some reps. I hate it when teams use the DH mainly as a slot to give guys a “day off”.
Sorry for that little rant…the point of it being though, i think AJ-KJ is exactly the kind of player you could “groom” to be a DH. He’s not gonna be an asset definsively to your team, but he sure as hell can be in the batter’s box.

I love the irrational fan-boy stuff.
I was wooting about Chris Carter as much as anyone.
As for whether it was wise to bring him up … hell, I don’t know. They did, so I enjoyed it. Now he’s back down and that’s fine, too.
Simplest explanation, if you care to use Occam’s Razor, is that they are simply putting out the best available players in terms of expected production right now. Carter, in spite of his bad showing, had some cloud of probability of how good they expected he could be, and the average of that probability can be estimated. Every other player has an expectation level, too. The expectations of the Matts was slowly decreasing, and the expectation of Carter was slowly increasing. At some point they cross and Carter is the better player right now, so up he comes. Now Buck and Jackson are available and they have slightly higher expectations of right-now production.
Whether this is actually what they’re thinking, I don’t know, but it’s a very simple explanation which seems entirely plausible to me.

I-5 is about a 6 hour drive. If you don’t stop a lot and go at least the speed limit.
Your sister is probably referring to Highway 1. Definitely worth it if you have the time. I think that’s more of a 10 hour drive or so from LA to San Francisco. Curvy 2-lane highway, but it’s definitely a gorgeous drive.
If you’re visiting, I would definitely do Highway 1. Scenery-wise it blows I-5 out of the water and it’s only about 4 hours longer in travel time.
by bakerbeachboy on Aug 16, 2010 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions
Yep.
I-5 is the “need to get there” road. Highway 1 is the “oooh! scenery!” road that you can take if you’re driving for the sake of seeing things.
Compromise...
just take 101 to the Bay Area. Adds an extra hour, but the first half is along the ocean (until just north of Santa Barbara). You can always take a detour to Monterrey or Santa Cruz etc as well
Hwy 1 is an amazing drive
and if you have extra time, you can stop in San Simeon and visit the Hearst Castle, which is really pretty stunning.
If you don’t want to stop that long, I would suggest that you stop at a place called Point Lobos State Reserve, a few miles south of Carmel. It’s like walking into an Ansel Adams photograph, and it’s right on Highway 1 — you could use it as a 30-45 minute rest stop if you want, or stay longer just to absorb the scenery.

I have done Oakland to LA in 5-6 hours, at night going about 95-100 most of the time, traded of with a friend halfway throu
Be careful when you arrive in L.A., though.
After hours of driving fast through complete nothingness, you get used to it, so then when you do arrive in civilization again 70 mph feels horribly slow to you and you’ll want to keep going fast.
The one and only time I’ve ever gotten a speeding ticket was on the Santa Monica freeway, impatiently passing people at about 75 mph in a 65 mph zone. And I deserved it, too.
On the flip side, if you go Hwy 1, don’t drive fast, because that road, beautiful though it is, is one of the most dangerous in the country.

Really, it's a distant memory.
I’m only guessing on the 75-65, too. It may have been 70 in a 60 zone.
All I really remember is that normally I don’t drive fast at all, which is why I never get speeding tickets. However, that stretch of I-5 is so flat and boring and straight that even I give in and go fast, and as a result of that, when I got out of the boring part, the force of habit from hours of driving fast through nowhere put me in a frame of mind where I wanted to keep going fast, so I was speeding where I shouldn’t have been, and I got a ticket that I deserved to get.
I only remember the general themes, not any of the details.

My favorite middle-of-the-night, middle-of-nowhere
is that cutoff road where you split off I-80 to go north on I-5. Is that 505?
I like to pull over and turn off the lights because it’s pitch black out there except for the stars. Sweet.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
Yeah that's 505
I’ve only ever driven on it during the day on my way to Chico and back but it’s more exciting than I-5 during the day at least.

Yep.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve made that drive at night. Sometimes listen to CDs. Sometimes radio search. One time I listened to nothing and just thought about stuff… without realizing it until I got to my destination.

My latest thing for long drives...
…is to make MP3 CDs with 150+ songs and then put it on “shuffle” so I can be surprised what comes up next. Great diversity from AC/DC to The Kingston Trio to The Beatles to Johnny Cash to The Offspring to everything in between.

The thinking is the best reason for road trips.
I’ve done some of my best creative thinking while driving, but it isn’t until about four hours into the trip that it really starts to flow.

There are places where you can cut over from 1 to 101 and speed things up
From Monterey, you can cut inland to get to 101, or you can stay on the coast, hug the Monterey Bay up to Santa Cruz, and then either cut inland over the mountains towards San Jose or go up 1 along the coast all the way to SF. So you can do a mixed route to save some time, if you like.

About 6 hours, depending on traffic.
Good time to catch up with friends via bluetooth or catch up on a bunch of music. Long, straight drive.
both. there’s i-5 through the desert (5 or 6 hours), hot, hellish, stinks around coalinga (where the cow smells lingah). DON’T DO THIS!!!
or take a combo of 1 and 101 (which you should do since you’re visiting and presumably interested in the pretty sights). It can take 10 hours if you do the carmel bit (also the prettiest bit perhaps?), but it can also be just 7 hours bypassing that part of hwy 1 and enjoying a whole lot of other great scenery.
in other words, i recommend you do this
if you have more time to spare, do this. (it says 8+ hours but it’s worth slowing down for parts of it.)
a compromise would be this.

yeah it depends on the goal
if the goal is expediency, then you want to take I5. If you want to be leisurely, I’d recommend PCH (1) from Santa Monica up to Oxnard, then 101 until you get into the “Bay Area” – check out Carmel for sunset (if you can) and take 1 into Santa Cruz, spend a night there if you can. Then proceed to SF. If you have more than 1 day.
nothing to see in San Jose IMO

Not too bad.
There’s a couple ways to do it. I-5, as people mentioned, is the shortest and straightest. It’s about 5-6 hours, depending if you hit traffic/construction/whatever. It’s boring and ugly as hell.
Highway 1 goes along the coast, it takes way longer but is curving and gorgeous. The downside is that if there is any sort of accident, you are screwed for traffic. If you get stuck behind a tour bus going 20 miles an hour, you are screwed (I did that for an hour once, it was AWESOME D:)
101 is the compromise. It’s longer than I-5 (I’d say by an hour-ish or so…? Been awhile since I did it) but not as bad as 1, you stand a better chance of not having terribleness in terms of something going wrong traffic-wise. There’s some really pretty spots on it, you head near some cool cities and beach towns along part of it.
"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."
You've all been very helpful.
Which, quite frankly, is what I’ve come to expect.
I guess I’ll have to think it through closer to the date. At least I know I have options though.
"You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."
I agree that 101 is a good choice
I’ve done it in 8 hours with only a short stop or two. But I’d advise taking longer, even stopping for the night halfway in San Luis Obispo or Morro Bay or Avila or one of those towns. Regardless, you’ll get a good cross-section of California on the 101. You could also take the train (Amtrak Coast Starlight) — it’s spectacular in a few places where it gets closer to the coast than the roads do — but it takes 14 hours or so and is always late.

Considering who we got signed, our class has got to rank in the top 5 or so this year
AN: Where you will be an A's fan or Dallas Braden will show you the repercussions of your actions.
Not sure I'd go Top 5, but close for sure
Boston and Washington had, in my opinion and I would expect in the opinion of most prospect watchers, the best two draft hauls by a pretty wide margin. Pittsburgh is also pretty clearly ahead of us. Detroit brought in quite a haul with no first round draft pick, but two supplemental first round picks. St. Louis had a very good draft. Getting Zach Lee signed was quite an achievement by the Dodgers.
We are most definitely not Top 3 in my opinion, but I could be convinced anywhere in the 4-7 range.

Seriously? 17 or 18 or something like that.
Which is a record, and which is also kind of impressive in a negative way. The A’s had long stretches of suckiness after Connie Mack kept dismantling his teams. In the early half of the 20th century teams like the Braves and Phillies and Senators and Browns would go literally decades without a glimmer of hope and even they could pull together a winning season more often.
