So danmerqury,
as the “statiest” front pager we’ve got I have to ask you…UZR isn’t fond of Ellis’ range this year. What do YOU think?

UZR/150 has him at +3.1 which isn’t far from his career of +7.6.

OH JESUS CHRIST LENSCRAFTERS WHATEVER SOMETIMES YOU JUST HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE STATS AREN'T RIGHT ALWAYS
Pam liked my old sig better.
Don't know.
For what it’s worth, both UZR and Dewan +/- agree that he fell off a cliff in 2009. Now, granted, that cliff falling is from “awesome” to “solidly above average”, but still.
The two stats agree pretty perfectly—I’m kind of inclined to believe that he’s gotten worse with age. Not a shocking premise, exactly.
Wouldn't last year be explained by playing through/recovering from injury?
Seems to me he’s been better this year than last (when I would agree he was well down from before), but that this year he’s been very good.

Injury, getting into his 30s, perhaps losing a step due to both of those previous issues
Pam liked my old sig better.
Yeah, FWIW I don't dispute that age is taking / will take its toll
I do think he’s had a real rebound from last year, coming back beyond just “solid” to “really good” — but that doesn’t mean I expect him to be terrific going forward.

I read it as Nico not agreeing with a stat that suggests Ellis is anything but exceptional at 2B.

Oh, for fuck's sake!
When I read Nico’s post, I thought to myself, “Just wait. Some idiot is going to come along and claim that’s a personal attack.” But I hit cancel and didn’t post it because I didn’t want to perpetuate that stupid idea.
What’s next? If I say, “People should stop being stupid assholes,” are you going to step forward and say I should stop making personal attacks against [so-and-so] because you think “stupid asshole” refers to him?
It’s not a personal attack to make a joke about how Ellis makes good defensive plays in spite of a bad UZR rating.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
There you go again.
No, you’re not an idiot. I think it’s idiotic to call Nico’s post a personal attack. That has nothing to do with you.
Then you come up and claim I’m talking about you and call it a personal attack. This is exactly what I’m talking about.
People need to stop having fucking chips on their shoulder and turn everything into a personal attack when it’s not.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
I never said it was a personal attack. I said it was a passive swipe, which it was.
If you can’t see that, then I’m sorry, but this is a conversation that took place what, a day or two ago? This shit happens all the time, but it’s always a free pass if it’s not a stat person.
Pam liked my old sig better.
Well, if there was a conversation that this
directly alludes to then I must have missed it.
All I see is people calling it a personal attack any time someone disagrees with them about baseball.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
passive. PASSIVE attack.
The entire point was to take a swipe at the conversation that took place the other day without actually calling out anybody who was in said conversation.
Pam liked my old sig better.
I guess I read the "at people" as "personal".
So, can we bro-hug and forget all about it?
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
Bullshit
You reply to mikev and tell a story about how “some idiot” is going to say something about Nico’s comment.
Mikev did exactly what you expected said idiot to do.
Not real difficult to see why he might think you’re calling him an idiot.
The monster at the end of this blog.
OK, I will concede
Mike exhibited behavior that I pre-conceived as idiotic. I didn’t think he would be the one, though. And I still don’t think he’s an idiot, in spite of him making a comment I disagree with.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
It's a joke to you and it's offensive to mikev.
Why is either wrong or right? Why does mikev’s perception of it being offensive make him a idiot, while your perception is righteous?
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
by lenscrafters on Aug 14, 2010 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions
Again, I didn't call Mike an idiot.
Also, Mike didn’t say it is offensive. Mike said it is a “personal swipe”. How can it be a personal swipe if there isn’t even a person involved? Who is it a swipe against? Mitchel Lichtman? Anyone who has ever quoted UZR? This just makes no sense.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
if mikev was offended, it was offensive to mike
but a joke is a joke, and i still don’t understand how the comment qualifies as a joke. obviously it’s not a funny joke, at all, but i fail to see how it was even an attempt at a joke.
where did the general keep his armies?
in his sleevies
see, this may be a bad joke, but it is a joke. i’ll explain: sleevies = sleeves, which makes armies = arms. okay, now someone explain nico’s joke please.

I've got to agree with mike here.
I didn’t take offense to it, but I could see how someone definitely could. AN’s been on edge recently, and calling someone a FIP buster or a UZR killer doesn’t help.
It's always on edge. That's why I carry my knife with me.

What doesn't help is treating things like personal attacks
when they’re not.
If I say I hate cake, is that a personal attack on Gigglingone? Where does this end?
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
HE NEVER SAID IT WAS A PERSONAL ATTACK
he said “passive swipes at people”… YOU are the one who has used the term “personal attack” like eight fucking times. jesus.
if you mocked people who bake cakes, that would not be a personal attack, but it would be a passive swipe at people who like to bake, a group which may or may not include gigglingone.
you know what i hate? all of nico’s little bitches on this site. i am not talking about anyone in particular of course.
A's v Giants "is kind of like the difference between going to see the Ramones and going to see the Bee Gees. A's fans will go see the Ramones."

But FIPbuster isn't a knock at ANYONE, even POTENTIALLY!
He has “beaten” FIP so far this year. Fact, right? I actually meant it as an endearment/nickname, but how anyone could construe that as a swipe at anyone is truly beyond me.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
No, it's not a knock at anyone in particular.
But the “stat” community here (god, I hate that false dichotomy) has recently felt like they’ve had to defend themselves against a lot of attacks on themselves and their way of enjoying baseball (like that calculator periodic table remark). Not saying you’re part of that or anything, but it could seem that way.
Fine... it's beyond you
Why not just trust danmercury when he tells you its a problem and avoid repeating the act?
The act of communication isn’t just about what you’re saying, its about what other people are hearing. If you think you’re saying A-B-C and your audience is telling you they’re hearing your message as X-Y-Z then blaming the audience doesn’t produce the result you’re intending. If the message is truly important… change how you’re saying it to get the response you want!
And if what you’re saying isn’t important than just be quiet.

Hey, I'm not saying I won't try to avoid repeating the act
I’m just utterly floored by people’s reactions. It sounds like the only way to avoid people hearing X-Y-Z is literally not to mention any metrics again and that’s what I’ll do. I will not refer to metrics any more on AN. Wow.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
It's not about that, though.
And it’s not about the fact that Cahill is outperforming FIP. It’s that a lot of people recently have used Cahill as the foundation for an argument that advanced statistics are bad and wrong. Many of these arguments have come with nasty ad hominem attacks and unnecessary jabs. Frankly, it’s getting annoying and infuriating. I’m not saying your game thread text was in that group—just that it could be misconstrued and lumped in with the rest.
Is that fair? Not really. But oh well.
Well, FWIW, I meant it more like
“Who ya gonna call….FIP-BUSTERS!!!”

It’s obvious he’ll never see a fastball until he starts hitting the off-speed the other way.

Probably 'horrified shudder' given the hat I was wearing.

"No. It's Oakland."
You seem like you'd be a cute person.

My last boyfriend was a Giants fan. Like I'd keep his skin.
However, if you do ever need directions to a Bottomless Pit of Doom, I totally know where one is now.
Hiding bodies is fun.

I don't know if you can consider supporting the Giants as a bad habit...

For real, anybody that thinks this offense realistically has any sort of chance to help compete in 2010 is dead wrong.
Pam liked my old sig better.
Exactly
and no FA’s want to come here so it looks like 2011 will be more of the same. We are going to have to dump Kouz but it has to be for an actual upgrade. Trading starting pitching away seems to be our only real bargaining chip.

Our hitters suck
but the approach has to be questioned. We have to maximize our opportunities when they present themselves, work the counts and do some hit and running if we don’t want to bunt.

No knock at all on my cohort, but...
If Carter is in fact on his way to Seattle, did the A’s just get better? We really don’t know. Did the A’s just get a lot more interesting? Oh yeah.
Yeah, well we have the answer to the first question (SSS). Wake me when the second one happens.
I'm here to talk about the past.
I've seen enough of Carter
I didn’t think he was ready because he was still striking out too much in AAA, but the LOUD voices here at AN drowned out anyone who objected to the idea. I kinda gave in…next time I hold my ground. He’s not ready. He should be sent down til after the AAA playoffs, bring up Travis Buck. The A’s are wasting great pitching on a kindergarten project.
Also - enough with Trevor Cahill and luck. I was thinking about this earlier today. One of the reasons Cahill is “lucky” is because his game plans have been working. The moment that “luck” runs out, the game plan shifts. As today showed, he can strike people out, but if he does, he’s likely to go fewer innings. So right now what he’s doing is working, and we don’t have to talk about luck or not-luck. He’s a Cy Young candidate, period.
Travis Buck sucks BTW
He has had enough chances here.

Buck is pounding the ball in AAA
He won’t be with the team next year.
But it’s time to try to win some fucking games, and if Buck is hitting the ball well.
I hear ya
He always pounds the ball in the minors. He just doesn’t in the majors.

The A's..
made a guy who has only a handful of games in the majors look like a cy young candidate. WHAT A FREAKIN CROCK OF A JOKE OF A BASEBALL TEAM!
Cahill has won 22 games in the majors, Duensing has STARTED 13... sad sad sad.

by Rory_Richter on Aug 14, 2010 6:36 PM PDT up reply actions
...okay.
My point is that a young guy can still be really good. Duensing’s got a career ERA at 3.00, for chrissakes, and he’s even better this year than he was last year.
I remember when K-Rod came up and helped the Angels win the WS
by DOMINATING everyone. Being young and not having many appearances is so irrelevant.
