Bat Kouzmanoff 9th

Not enough attention gets paid to Kevin Kouzmanoff's all-too-frequent rally-killing, out-making tendencies.  Friday night's 0-5 w/RISP should convince you that he and his .296 OBP belong nowhere near the heart of the order.

Rajai Davis and Cliff Pennington both post higher OPS than Kouzmanoff, yet Geren prefers to bat Davis and Pennington low in the order with Kouz toward the middle.  What gives?

(Don't try to tell me that Kouz adds "pop," because I'll quickly direct you to his .393 slg%)

Agreed

I’m not going to sit here and say that Kouz is a bad player because his defense has shown that he’s actually pretty valuable (or so I’ve been told :) ) but I agree he needs to drop in the order…

Right now, Kouzmanoff is 12th on the team in wOBA. Eric Patterson is 11th. That is all.

WOW!

That’s fucking remarkable!

Keep in mind, of course, that "the best defense of Derek Jeter's life" ranks somewhere in between "the best fiscal responsibility of Mike Tyson's life" and "the best not-getting-assassinated-ness of James Garfield's life." -FJM

I had to lower the minimum PA number to 30 just to get both Watson and Carson on there. That dropped Kouzmanoff (.300) to 13th with Watson (.284) 15th and Carson (.213) last.

That actually makes more sense than when he bats 5th against RHP

Career against LHPs, Kouz has a solid .800 OPS, even though he’s played lots at Petco. Against RHPs he’s just really bad.

This.

I just watched the “condensed game” of last night’s BOS-Texas game. There was some hitting going on! Made me drool to think of it. (Although, it’s also nice to have a park where a good fly ball is a homerun, right?)

Samuel Taylor Coleridge on Brett Anderson's Fastball: "At first it seemed a little speck, / And then it seemed a mist: / It moved and moved, and took at last / A certain shape, I wist. / A speck, a mist, a shape, I wist! / And still it neared and neared: / As if it dodged a water-sprite, / It plunged and tacked and veered."

I'd say 8th sounds good

if geren insists on having penny batting 9th…

Not to you, who I agree with regarding Kouzmanoff’s bad offense.

He has 10 errors and no range...

…to go with his shrinking OPS/SLG/nut-sack. How much worse could Jeff Baisley possibly be?

by kitoko on Aug 14, 2010 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions

There are ways to measure defense that do a far better job than your eyes do

and they say Kouzmanoff is a plus defender. Yeah, he’s not a good hitter. There is more to being a good baseball player than hitting, these qualities are just harder to quantify. It’s much easier to look at somebody that’s hitting .300/.400/.500 and say, “He’s hitting the cover off the ball,” than it is to look at his fielding percentage and say, “Nothing gets past him.”

And Jeff Baisley is pretty bad.

by NateHST on Aug 14, 2010 9:08 PM PDT up reply actions

What I wonder about is why Kouz

doesn’t play one step more to his left. Why not move over, and get to more balls in the hole that you’re currently not getting to, until balls are actually getting past you down the line?

I don't really think his range is a huge issue.

FG has it above average this year, as well as last year. I put more stake in that than I would in my eyes.

by NateHST on Aug 14, 2010 9:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I find it hard to believe that a guy who has played there forever is improving each and every year into his late-20s. That defies pretty much everything known about defense.

I think he’s probably a couple runs above average at third (that’s supported by his career numbers) and he’s absolutely pathetic offensively.

The team will be better by replacing him, but right now they don’t actually have someone to replace him with. But that doesn’t mean third base isn’t a real problem.

How can a position where the A's have (at least) a league average player, according to WAR, be a real problem?

And in regards to his defense, is it possible that he’s having two plus years defensively, in what will be an otherwise awful career defensively? Yes, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been worth those runs this year, and last year, and the year before that. It’s just as feasible it took him a couple years to adjust to playing an MLB-level 3B. Players improve. He just turned 29, it’s not like he’s doing this in the twilight of his career.

He won't make up with it for his arm.

He has very mediocre arm strength. A truly weird way of throwing, though it is quite accurate.

His tendency to pile up K's and GIDP's with RISP...

…has led me to believe he is afflicted with N-SS (Nut-Sack Shrinkage). :-)
I seriously cannot stand this joke of a player. He symbolizes everything our lineup has become—punchless, hopeless, and clueless. I wish some Fairy Godmother somewhere would wave her wand and he would be back in AA where he belongs (but not our AA team, where he might block some player that could perhaps actually get better as his career progresses—what a concept).

by kitoko on Aug 14, 2010 7:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I would indeed bat Kouzmanoff 9th

The rest of them, I’d bat 10th-17th.

This is the real problem. I guess Geren is, too.

Kouzmanoff shouldn’t be hitting fourth in any lineup, unless it’s on a softball team in a rec-league. Apart from Cust, Barton, and Crisp, the A’s lineup ranges from barely above average to well below it. Kouzmanoff is well below it, but he’s the only one that offers real defensive value at this point, besides Pennington.

Instead of letting Kouzmanoff go, let Ellis go and sign Orlando Hudson to play 2B and bring up Adrian Cardenas to play 3B against RHP.

by NateHST on Aug 14, 2010 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Eh, I find it hard to believe that more than a handful of pitchers in all of MLB actually pay attention to defensive stats.

If you aren’t looking at the stats, Kouzmanoff isn’t really a wow-defender. I would bet pitchers care more about how many runs their team scores for them, but that’s just my opinion. There are other reasons why the A’s shouldn’t platoon Kouzmanoff, like the $5Mish they’d have to pay him this year. Still, Cardenas’ stats are quite a bit better against RHP so it’s a thought. Platooning him at 2B with Rosales is a cost-saving idea, too.

Chavy’s corpse, Noman’s corpse, Adam Kennedy, Jack Hannahan, Kouz. The circle of suck continues. I was hoping against hope that Kouz would be the Carney Lansford-type of steady vet at 3rd, but that hasn’t been the case. I have a bad feeling that 3rd will be where they end up trying to shoehorn Grant Green into if he washes out at short.
