Open Thread: Game 104 - A's at Chicago
Only in baseball do we take such an interest in splits, such as noting that Gio Gonzalez is 5-0, 1.99 during the day time compared to 4-6, 4.43 at night. Just once I'd like to see analysis of local accountant Snerdley McPhee, pointing out that right-handed clients complain 23% more often than left-handed clients, leading to the obvious conclusion that "he never should have stopped doing tax returns for Carlos Gonzalez and Andre Ethier!!!!"
Anyway, the sun-loving Gio takes the mound today against one of the few people in the world who is named Gavin but does not commandeer the Love Boat. This would be Floyd, whose 6-8 record belies his solid 3.66 ERA. Floyd has, this season, been the anti-Gio, posting 5.08 ERA during the day and a 3.17 ERA at night.
What does this all mean? Nothing. But it's kinda fun. Note: Part III of my interview with Craig Breslow will run later today at 5:00pm. This is the segment that's all about baseball and it's really quite splendoriffic.
The lineup, very much a "day game after a night game" look, features 22% more Matt than the leading brand.

The idea of "Juan Pierre, DH" makes me giggle
Especially when Quentin, easily one of the worst defensive OFs in baseball, is playing right.

Are we the only team that could field an 8 and 9 like those 2?
Go A’s.
No meltdowns from Gio and we should be OK even though there less capable hitters than normal.

And Carlos Quentin in the field, where he’s even less competent than Watson/Carson are with the bat.

And Piazza had another clasic moment
As he was signing autographs for fans, a friend of mine came with his little girl. And she suddenly got scared and started crying – “I don’t want to go to that man!”

Piazza’s answer was classic – “Yeah, I have that effect on women!”

1) Ate 4 bowls of Broccoli Cheeese Soup at around 2 p.m.

Right
Though I’m sure there are, as RRS implies, situations where that’s not true.
In the A’s lineup, I’d try to construct it so Barton and Cust aren’t on base just to be forced out during one of Suzuki’s or Kouzmanoff’s double play balls. I almost wonder if some kinda crazy Barton, Cust, Crisp, Suzuki, Kouzmanoff top 5 wouldn’t be better.

To be fair, Wade can scout
Didn’t he draft Utley, Howard, Hamels, Burrell with the Phillies? And not trade them away?
McLane’s a really, really bad owner. Wade’s dumb, but McLane makes things so much harder, since he pretty much prevented the team from rebuilding even when it needed to (until now, which is way too late). And, weren’t some of the ridiculous contracts handed out before Wade started?
