WHY ONLY CAHILL TO THE ALL-STAR????

I personally feel, that GIO has carried this team. And he didnt even get mentioned. Hes pitched over 100 innings, hes had 11 quality starts hes leading in KO'S, ERA, Due to 100 innings not 80. Started the season with the team, also his last 19 innings hes allowed only 1 run. Also cahill gets way more RUN SUPPORT, You pitch alot more comfortble with a couple of runs, Then no runs. Gio averages 2 or less runs per game. I was personally in the pirates game, Where he went to the 7th inning. And bob decided to pull Gio out with 87 pitches allowing 1 run. I personally wasnt a big fan of Gio. But i realized he's TURNED IT AROUND BIG TIME!!! And not even to get mentioned I feel that oakland already had there pick. No commercials, No jerseys, GIO I leave you with my VOTE AS AN ALL-STAR. Thank you for this year, you've been awesome.

And I hope you decide to stay with us. I see you defenetly an ALL-STAR for many years to come.

P.S. Out of the 9 SHOUT OUT games GIO has pitched 4 of them. Its pretty amazing.

Good start, johnfan.

You would probably serve your cause better by comparing Gio’s numbers to those of the pitchers selected for the All-Star Game. You would either 1) see why Gio wasn’t selected or 2) create a valid argument for your point.

by LoneStranger on Jul 6, 2010 11:03 AM PDT reply actions

Agreed.

Although Gio’s been great, Cahill’s our team leader in ERA. You can’t really compare the fact that Gio has more K’s than Cahill—they’re two different kinds of pitcher.

Have you ever stopped to think that Geren pulled Gio because he felt as if he was being over-pitched?

Ugh, look at me, agreeing with Geren. Someone, shoot me.

by spottedstomper on Jul 6, 2010 11:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Geren probably pulled Gio

because he had walked four batters, just gave up a homerun to Milledge because he had gone 3-1 and didn’t want to walk any more and had only gotten 2 swinging strikes all night.

Gio pitched 6 scoreless innings, and he gives up one run in the 7th inning. And bob takes him out with 87 pitches. Somethings not right.

Uhm..

Over-pitched can take on a variety of forms; if a pitcher appears tired based on previous starts, pitching on short rest, just appearing tired based on poor performance; a variety of factors.

Thanks for your time though.

Sigh..

I was just illustrating examples in which why a pitcher might be pulled too soon. The exact reason was given in a post above, so that explains this specific start you’re lamenting over.

Pitchers getting tired during starts happens a’s well..let’s say a pitcher labors through an inning, throwing 30-40 pitches, then is forced to throw after a quick 1-2-3 inning, their arm is going to feel like rubber.

Obviously I wasn’t paying enough attention to the game in question, all I’m doing is providing examples, calm down.

Gio has a better K/9, HR/9, LOB%, HR/FB, FIP, RAR and WAR than Cahill.

Cahill has a better BB/9, GB%, ERA, xFIP, LD%, and of course more wins.

Gio has pitched against teams they have been under .500 for most of the season 7 times (twice against SEA and CLE, once against BAL, CHC, and PIT) and has faced .500 teams 3 times (twice against SFG and once against TOR). Against those teams he is 5-2 and given up 22 runs (2.2 runs per game)

Cahill has pitched against teams they have been under .500 for most of the season 4 times (twice against BAL, once against CHC and PIT) and has faced .500 teams 2 times (once against TOR and SFG). Against those teams he is 5-1 (2.166 runs per game).

There’s no reason why Gio Gonzalez deserves to be an All-Star. He’s been pretty solid, but “pretty solid” doesn’t make you an All-Star. He’s very inconsistent. He has a 4.19 BB/9 rate and his ERA and WHIP numbers are good and not great. Gonzalez has a better FIP because he’s a strikeout pitcher and not a ground ball pitcher. Gonzalez has a better WAR because he has made 17 starts (103 IP) and Cahill has made 13 starts (82 IP). Cahill has been marvelous in all 12 of his last 13 starts particularly with a 2.25 ERA and 0.99 WHIP.

This isn’t about Cahill being better than Gonzalez because he gets ground ball outs. Does Gonzalez have a 2.25 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in his last 12 starts with a 2.7 BB/9 rate? Is he 7-0 in his last nine starts with a 2.12 ERA? Gonzalez ranks 17th in ERA in the American League and he’s 29th in WHIP. He’s tied for the league lead in walks.

well

There are several ways to approach this question. That’s mostly because it is badly conveyed to a laughable extent. Why only Cahill? Because the A’s are a small market team without a large enough or passionate enough fanbase to stuff the ballot box in our favor, (even if we have more than one deserving player…which we probably don’t).

Why Cahill instead of Gio? Because, despite Gio’s strides, his peripherals are in the neighborhood of league average. 1.311 WHIP? Pedestrian. He leads the league in walks. Read that again. He leads the fucking league in walks. That isn’t “good”. He doesn’t really have all that many strikeouts. In addition, the fact that he has been involved in so many shutouts should imply that his overall numbers are better than they actually are. Instead, his totals indicate that he is inconsistent and (still) prone to mental incontinence. He emotionally shits the bed when the game starts to go poorly for him. Cahill no longer does, evidently.

Why aren’t Cahill and Gio and Suzuki and Bailey and Breslow there? Because you have to have room for at least 10 Yankees and Red Sox combined. It’s in the rules. Look it up.

Look: I like Gio. I thought he would have a breakout season this year and even though he has fallen slightly short thus far, he is solid. Love his curveball. But he needs to grow up and needs to throw more strikes before he can be considered anything approaching an All-Star.

Cahill also makes it because he has pretty W-L and ERA numbers, Like it or not, those things are sexy in the context of ASG selection procedures.

In summation, I realize that this post merely reiterates what many have said above but your reasoning is essentially unreasonable and not at all well thought out. If your intention was to incite debate, then kudos to you. However, if your aim was to share a rational and compelling argument that was both thought provoking and academically correct, then you fucked up. That you seem adamant about being a prick in your responses only underscores the degree to which you do not know what the fuck you are talking about.

Good day, sir.

shits in his pants? lol he’s got 7 wins in the 1st half of the season. How many wins does he have to have for being considered a decent pitcher? 35 wins? plus era 3.50 who cares about the walks. As long as his ERA is down, and wins and shuts out teams. Thats what matters.

Walks kind of do matter

Because people who walk a lot of batters throw more pitches in fewer innings and it forces the bullpen to be used more.

please refrain from discussing pitcher W-L on AN

its the most meaningless individual stat in all of sports, as it relies on literally the entire team (scoring runs, defense, management, relief pitching, etc etc) they shouldnt even keep records of it anymore. I cant think of a worse way to rate a player.

For example: “Derek Lowe and Roy Halladay are both going for their 10th win tonight” see? utterly pointless.

by UncleLeo on Jul 6, 2010 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Team wins != pitcher wins

so although every pitcher win = a team win, since half of the equation isn’t under the pitcher’s control, I prefer “Halladay is trying to help his team win it’s Xth game tonight”.
I don’t think PL78 is suggesting that team wins don’t matter, or that a pitcher win doesn’t mean the team won, just that it’s probably not a goo measurement of the quality of the pitcher.

by el generico on Jul 6, 2010 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

No, wins are not the best indicator of individual performance, but...

…neither are they “utterly pointless”. And if a pitcher’s goal is an individual win to help in his next contract negotiations, so be it. The team still wins, also.

Bob Geren... Jackie Moore without the personality.

by UncleLeo on Jul 6, 2010 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess I agree

that if a pitcher gets a “win” it’s going to be good for the team, but I’m guessing that most pitchers are in fact trying to do specific things: strike batters out, keep the ball on the ground, don’t walk batters, and see the “win” as the reward for doing those things, as opposed to trying to “win” in some abstract manner, but I can accept that some people use “win” as a short-hand for that.

WINS. ARE. A. TEAM. STATISTIC.

Why not give out wins for second basemen? Oh no we cant do that, but we can do it for the guy who pitches 5 innings or the other guy who made the last out before the hitters gave the team the lead.

ITS SO IRRATIONAL!!!! ARGHHHHH MY BRAIN HATES IT SOOOOO MUCH!!!!

Id say about 3-5 years, realistically.

OPS is now being used on ESPN. If you just sell it as a “one stop shop” stat that gives a player a number based off his entire gameplay, then when you put it like that, it wont be hard for the mass populace to take it on.

-Yeah, I just posted that, but my opinion is apparently "wrong" a significant portion of the time though, so take it as you will.

by PL78 on Jul 6, 2010 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm still a bit worried that because WAR is not a specific statistic, rather, it's a conversion method for other statistics,

it may take longer for mainstream adoption than it would otherwise. WAR could be wOBA/FIP/UZR based, or OPS/tRA/RZR based, or anything you want, really.

by danmerqury on Jul 6, 2010 4:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

I really wish we had an easy way to rate defense. WAR’s defense only matters over 3 years, but we count it during the year as a regular counting stat. There’s tons of variation year by year.

Chavez was mentioned because he was our opening day DH

When the ballots go out, the MLB people look at who has gotten the most starts for each team at what position. Chavez, at that time (what, like 3 weeks into the season or something?) had the most starts at DH, therefore he was the Oakland As DH. The fans don’t vote for pitchers (the coach picks them) so there wasn’t a reason for the As to put a “Gio for All-Star” banner anywhere.

There were times early on when I think the banners did say “Vote Chavy and his friends to the ASG” or something like that because the As didn’t have a breakout player, and Chavez was still the most recognizable position player in the lineup to the masses. So if you’re wondering why the As never “mentioned” him, its because the fans don’t vote for pitchers.

That's all a different situation, then

Aside from the fact fans don’t vote for pitchers, of course. But teams generally promote all their All-Star candidates in one form or another, whether they have a real chance or not.

Lucky to have one...

We should be happy to be represented at all…

OR should we feel somewhat patronized? Seems to be a little bit of a hollow honor to be the lone representative when said representation is based largely on the one player per team rule. Maybe it would put a little pressure on our front office to acquire a higher caliber of talent if the A’s (or any other team) went “5 years without an all-star.”

Gio doesn’t belong in the conversation, Cahill is a stretch if not for the current rules. I look forward to having a player dominate the league to the point where he is a no-brainer selection… I am TIRED of “who will be our marginal representative just because we have to have one.”

Maybe a better discussion would be who the next one to fall into that category may be?

One more funny note.

Gio has actually only pitched in three shutouts, regardless of where the score was when he left.

In non-shutout games, his WHIP is upwards of 1.4 (essentially below average).

Just another way to illustrate that, though he has flashes of brilliance, he just hasn’t put it together yet to the point where he always has his best stuff/composure.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he earned a spot some time in his career, but that time is not now.
