GOG #28: Yankee go home!

After inching back towards respectability on the backs of baseball paupers (otherwise known as the Pirates, Orioles, and Indians), the A’s will be tested against the Yankees this series.  The Yankees are coming off taking 2 of 3 against the Jays.

Leaderboard

Don't forget to do your score in the last GOG

Star-divide

This GOG is worth 54 points total

  1. Series Outcome (3 pts)
  2. Obligatory WPA question: Name two players on each team (starting pitchers excluded) who individually end up with a positive WPA value for the series (2 pts each, 8 total)
  3. With Coco Crisp out, Rajai Davis figures to get some playing time.  Maybe.  Predict his PA/K/SB (2 pts each, 6 total)
  4. Trevor Cahill is our lone ASG rep.  Yay!  It’ll be a good matchup on Tuesday between him and CC Sabathia.  Predict his Trevor’s IP, and then give me his distribution of outs (FO, GO, and K) +/- 1 (2 pts, then 1 each, so 5 total)
  5. Both Gio Gonzalez and CC Sabathia lead their teams in number of pitches thrown this season, 1719 and 1741, respectively.  Who throws more pitches in their start this series?  How many pitches do each throw? (+/- 5 pitches) (2 pts each, 6 total)
  6. Kevin Kouzmanoff has been on the schnide, to say the least.  He hasn’t gotten a hit since the Friday of the Pirates’ series.  Does his 0-fer end this series?  If it does end, what kind of hit does he get to end it (single, double, triple, or HR)?  How many hits does he end up with on the series?  (2 pts each, 6 total)
  7. Of all NYY players, Derek Jeter may be most annoying for making a play that shall not be recounted in a past playoff series.  Predict his H/XBH/K this series. (2 pts each, 6 total)
  8. In the last series, Ryan Sweeney made a spectacular 9-3 putout from the outfield to snuff a sure Indians rally.  As impressive as that was, Gabe Gross made an equally unimpressive error in going for a potential play at the plate.  Are there any outfield assists made in this series?  If there are, who makes one? (2 pts, then 3 pts; 5 total)
  9. How many DPs does each team hit into this series?  (2 pts each, 4 total)
  10. Ben Sheets has gone at least 6IP in his last 11 starts.  Does he throw at least 6IP this start?  How many batters (+/- 1) does he face in the game?  How many HR does he allow?  To who?  (2 pts each, 8 total)

you don’t have to worry about it. I think it’s nice that someone cares so much about the GOG, most people just post answers and don’t bother talking about it. long live the GOG!

Thanks!

I like the GOG as an opportunity to put my penchant for useless entertainment together with any remnants of the OCD I developed in graduate school and then as a journal editor. Also, it makes me pay attention to the games in a different way, and to learn more about the opponents (since my league-wide knowledge is very slim, not having paid attention to baseball for twenty-odd years).

I know it.

In any case, I’m glad there’s a Thursday off before the LAA series starts, so I should be able to log on then at a cafe for the next GOG and to check (our) answers on this one!

But speaking of taking over the lead – you already hit 200 points! Congrats, and a late starter, too. Who knows what the second half of the season will hold? Someone needs to put something in vignette’s drink, slow him down a little!

I think on #8, you only get points for the second half if you name an assist-maker.

If there are no errors, the second half is voided. At least, that’s how I understand it (“if there are…”).

But you could say someone for the second part and it won’t affect your answer for the first part.

yeah I know in California pretty much everything is out now

Back in the 80’s my Uncle used to drive to Wyoming every year and buy a bunch of fireworks that were illegal in California and we’d go up near Bodega Bay and shoot them off.

We had some fireworks yesterday that would shoot 150 feet into the air before they blew up…it was pretty cool.

As impressive as that was, Gabe Gross made an equally unimpressive error in going for a potential play at the plate. Are there any outfield assists made in this series? If there are, who makes one? (2 pts, then 3 pts; 5 total) Yes, Sweeney

9. How many DPs does each team hit into this series? (2 pts each, 4 total) A’s: 7, Yankees: 6

10. Ben Sheets has gone at least 6IP in his last 11 starts. Does he throw at least 6IP this start? How many batters (+/- 1) does he face in the game? How many HR does he allow? To who? (2 pts each, 8 total) Yes, 27, 1, Cano

#2 is 4 players (2 each team) with overall series positive WPAs, not a typical Starz and Goatz.

It doesn't have to be hitters for #2

You could go with relievers

oops - I was looking at Cahill's line, not Gio's

And Jeter had one strickout in game 2.

This is why people should not do GOG answers after watching their team get pounded in three straight games.

And my score is now 21 instead of 23.

3. Predict Rajai’s line: 7PA/2K/1SB (2 pts each, 6 total)

7. Jeter is just annoying. Period. Predict his line: 3H/1XBH/2K. (2 pts each, 6 total)

9. DPs: A’s – 3. The Evil Empire of the East – 2 (2 pts each, 4 total)

I don't have a great feeling about this series.

But of course I’ll watch anyway.

2.) Ellis/Sweeney/Cano, Swish
3.) 7 PA/3 K’s/2 SB
4.) 7 IP/12 GO/4 FO/5 K’s
5.) CC throws more. For Gio: 94 pitches. For CC: 103
6.) Yes, it’s a double, and he gets 4 hits.
7.) For Jeter: 5 hits, 2 XBH, 2 K’s
8.) Yes, Sweeney
9.) DP’s: A’s 5, Yanks 4.
10.) Yes, 24 batters, 2 HR’s. A-Rod, Cano.

my first GOG in a long, long while

The A’s better do well!

  1. Series Outcome // 2-1 Oakland
  2. Obligatory WPA question: Name two players on each team (starting pitchers excluded) who individually end up with a positive WPA value for the series // Crisp, Pennington; Cano, Swisher
  3. With Coco Crisp out, Rajai Davis figures to get some playing time. Maybe. Predict his PA/K/SB // 10 PA, 3 K, 1 SB
  4. Trevor Cahill is our lone ASG rep. Yay! It’ll be a good matchup on Tuesday between him and CC Sabathia. Predict his Trevor’s IP, and then give me his distribution of outs (FO, GO, and K) +/- 1 // 6 IP, 5 FO, 9 GO, 4 K
  5. Both Gio Gonzalez and CC Sabathia lead their teams in number of pitches thrown this season, 1719 and 1741, respectively. Who throws more pitches in their start this series? How many pitches do each throw? (+/- 5 pitches) // Sabathia; 107 for CC, 102 for Gio
// yes, single, 3
  7. Of all NYY players, Derek Jeter may be most annoying for making a play that shall not be recounted in a past playoff series. Predict his H/XBH/K this series. // 4 H, 1 XBH, 1 K
// no
  9. How many DPs does each team hit into this series? // each team hits into 2 DP
  10. Ben Sheets has gone at least 6IP in his last 11 starts. Does he throw at least 6IP this start? How many batters (+/- 1) does he face in the game? How many HR does he allow? To who? // no, 22 batters, 1 HR
