DLD 7/29/10: Floats, Anyone?
I went to my first BeerFest this year, and now I have my eye on Root Beer Float Day:
The 11th Annual Oakland A's MUG Root Beer Float Day will take place on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 from 10:35 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. Join us as A's players, local celebrities, radio and television personalities will be serving MUG Root Beer and Orange Crush floats in the Eastside Club for $2.00 each.
A's players expected to participate: Bailey, Breslow, Cahill, Davis, Pennington, Rosales and Gio. Subject to change, of course. Many other sports personalities, like Dave Stewart and Vida Blue, and the Raiderettes (!) and Stomper (!!), are scheduled.
And Rickey (!!!):
In addition, former Oakland A's player Rickey Henderson will be signing autographs and taking photos for one hour beginning at 11am. A limited number of autographs and photos are available for a minimum donation of $20 each to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).
Who's game to skip out of work early? It's also $2 ticket and $1 hot dog day. Sounds like a can't miss. Even if it is only the Royals on the schedule.
Oh, and, um, dump?

You confused me
I thought it was a geeky title about different variable types in C++. Should have known better.
"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are."

float has been around much longer than C++
or even C
When was Fortran invented?
My dad has a calculator from forever ago that has a Float switch.

In contrast to your amazing post about Jon Ratliff...
…you can always count on this guy.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
he has to do that really
well, he doesn’t, but mark McClemore does.
"The ego, the super-ego, and the Ed" - dannycakes
I know, it's a bit of a cheap shot on my part
and even though ARod is a jerk, he’s still the one on the field playing the game — fans came to see him in TX, not to see the owners, and if the owners agreed to pay him this money, he’s not in the wrong to fight to make them live up to their agreement.
Still, it seemed to be an interesting comparison with Jon Ratliff’s appreciation for his 1 inning he played in the big leagues, and for the great piece Don wrote about him.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
I like the title the best. It sounds magnanimous:
A-Rod worried about payments to ex-Rangers players
Like he’s worried about it for the other players. Not himself.

Well, yeah, A-Rod is above all others.
""Imagine if you go there to see Miss Universe and you end up having Miss Iowa..." - Miguel Batista
That's misleading, though.
I blame the AP headline writer.
The story doesn’t tell much but it sounds to me like this is a question between creditors of the team and creditors of the Hicks Group. Hicks, who owns the Rangers and various other sports team assets, is bankrupt and can’t pay back his loans. His creditors are trying to get whatever money they can out of him, including whatever cash can be gotten for selling off the Rangers. The auction is a response to the Hicks creditors’ concern that the team might be sold at below market price to a related party.
Meanwhile the Texas Rangers have also filed bankruptcy, as a legal maneuver to help detach the team from Hicks and force a sale. I assume the Rangers really are technically bankrupt, but clearly they are a different level of broke. They do indeed have unmet liabilities, but the fact that other potential owners are still willing to pay large sums for the team suggests that it’s plenty viable as a business. The only reason it can’t pay its bills is if money is getting sucked out of it to pay off Hicks’ other debts.
This article tells me that the bankruptcy court has put forth procedures which do not require the bidder to pay up all the Rangers’ past due liabilities. This possibly advantages the Hicks creditors, since it means more money for them, but at the expense of the Rangers’ creditors. The Rangers’ creditors are primarily players, and A-Rod is one of them. Therefore his lawyers are registering their objection to be considered by the bankruptcy court. This is perfectly reasonable, and the only thing turning it into a story about A-Rod’s supposed selfishness is the usual sports media bullshit making everything about A-Rod (see, eg, Dallas Braden’s perfect game).

This situation (I didn't read the article, but I did read your post!) seems similar to the Cubs/Tribune Company
Tribune Company filed for bankruptcy, but the Cubs are, have been, and will be enormously profitable. I don’t recall the details, but before they sold the Cubs to the Ricketts family there was lots of legal wrangling going on that strikes me as a bit similar to this.
As a funny sidenote: Because of being published in a Tribune Co. owned magazine once two years ago, I now get mailed updates on their bankruptcy every couple months. They paid me a one-time payment, but I guess I’m considered a vendor so someone is wasting lots of money sending me two thick envelopes with all sorts of information that means nothing to me. Yay for inefficiency.

Not saying he doesn't suck,
but his OPS is 183 points higher than Davis’ this year. (That’s kind of sad, that .308 OBP would be an improvement at 1st base for them)
I hope they drastically overpay for him……

Yeah, that's pretty damn stupid
Barton probably needs a day off, but not against the f’in Rangers, he doesn’t.

FIRE GEREN NOW.

question:
if we fire him now, can the lineup be changed?

Hey does Art Howe still live in Texas?...we can make the switch
Art knows how to stand near the top step of the dugout and take charge.
Is he in Oakland right now?

Opposite for me
I have an irrationally bad feeling about Gio.

Meh
Cust and Barton can both take a walk better than anyone on the team. Plus there’s the off chance that Cust runs into one and puts a crooked number on the board.

Houston is having a fire sale....I wonder what they could get for Pedro Feliz?
maybe some 4 day old bread…..a set of bald tires…..or an std of some sort
I still can't believe they gave him $4.5 MM.
He’s batting .213/.238/.303. UZR has him at six runs below average, and it’s not even August. -1.6 WAR. Fun times.
Yeah, but he's an RBI guy
In fact, he has 27 of them this year.

Who wants to bet he's also going to the Rangers.
Hicks and Daniels are on their way out, they’re going to go after everyone and make the other team eat all the salary.

Goodness, I step away for a minute and Brett Wallace is traded again? He’s going to know everyone in baseball by the end of his 3rd season.

Seriously, though
Alex Anthopoulos is going to get reamed by the media for this one.
Doesn’t matter how much you covet a guy in A ball who can barely OPS above .700 this year, you don’t give away a guy who is close to MLB ready

He's doing alright for being 19 and in high A
But other than that, maybe he just really thinks that Wallace sucks. Like… big-time bad at baseball.

I agree that he's fine for his age
But he’s nowhere near a sure thing to even get to Wallace’s level.
It just doesn’t make much sense to me, it seems like AA just makes moves when they’re available, instead of having any sort of idea as to how to assemble a team that will be successful at a certain timeline

It's kind of crazy how far his stock has fallen.
First round pick, traded as the centerpiece for Matt Holliday….then swapped for a great OF prospect….now swapped for a high A guy. Wow.
