Minor Athletics 7/19-7/27 (Part I)
Welcome everybody, here comes another minor league update.
I will start today with the high minors and hope to get to the lower teams over the weekend. It's really a lot of work.
But before we go to the stats, here are some draft signing news from Jane Lee:
The A's have not confirmed the deal, but according to reports from Baseball America, the A's have reached an agreement worth $2 million, which would make Choice -- taken 10th overall -- just the second player out of this year's top-10 picks to reach a deal with his team.
And here some words from Billy Owens about the performance of some A's prospects:
RHP Michael Ynoa, Rookie League
Ynoa has been plagued with tendinitis this year, but general manager Billy Beane said Ynoa would return to the mound soon. Ynoa, 18, has only thrown nine innings this season.
"He's been throwing great when he's been out there," Beane said. "I think he's just had a nagging elbow issue."
The minor league stats follow after the jump.
AAA Sacramento goes 6-3 and is now 58-46 for season. They stay atop the Pacific South Division.
Notes:
- Carter is really hitting the ball right now and if he keeps it up another week he could earn him a shot in Oakland.
- He also has cut down the strikeouts the last couple of weeks.
- Taylor has now played quite some time in CF and is also hitting nice. If only the power would come through.
- Why are Banwart and Godfrey only in relief?

Brown and Cardenas really need to be promoted.
Keep in mind, of course, that "the best defense of Derek Jeter's life" ranks somewhere in between "the best fiscal responsibility of Mike Tyson's life" and "the best not-getting-assassinated-ness of James Garfield's life." -FJM
Yeah, it’s pretty ridiculous at this point. We’ve all stressed it a lot and it makes too much sense.

Definitely agree
Both are now more or less at career high walk rates and career low strikout rates. They also hit linedrives almost 25 percent of the time. I think that is a pretty good indication that they have nothing left to prove, especially because they have now 60 games of domination.
It's very important that Adam Heether and Jeff Baisley get at bats in AAA.

Cardenas went 2-for-4 with two walks tonight in Midland.

While I think Cardenas is a much better prospect, I'm really surprised Brown is still in AA
Sacramento has only 3 OFs on the roster. They could actually really use him right now.

Are you counting Carter as one of the OFs?
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
No, though I guess he has played there a bit recently.
I was talking about Taylor, Buck, and Wimberly.

thought Wimberly was playing mostly in the IF

He plays sometimes SS for Tolleson
But most of the time he seems to be in center or left field. Heether is also playing corner outfield.
Wow. Just spent a couple hours on a post already made
Yay

Oh man bad timing.
Do you have the lower ones together? Then you could post the second part.
And for the future you can just drop me a mail if you are planning on making a minor league recap. Same for asyouwish if he gets back doing minorleague posts. Otherwise I will try and get 2 or 3 more updates before the minor season ends.
No problem
You probably have more on the lower minors than I did anyway, so go ahead.

Just to jump ahead to talk about the lower minors
Still waiting to see how all the big guns from the ‘10 draft will do but I am really liking the look of Tony Thompson in Vancouver. I like his K/BB ratio, and while he’s not hitting for much power I think it will pick up once he gets a little more time in the pro’s and get’s out of Vancouver.
I'm with ya
FWIW Thompson hit his 3rd homerun tonight too :)
by bakerbeachboy on Jul 28, 2010 10:11 PM PDT up reply actions
I was at the Vancouver game tonight,
and Thompson really impressed me. He hit the home run about a mile, but also drove a ball to the opposite field and put together some good at bats. SSS I know, but I was much less impressed with AJ-KJ. Also, Jordan Tripp really got a hold of one, but it just barely went foul.

Thanks for this
Always enjoy first-hand accounts :)
I’d love it if AJ-KJ could develop into a masher. He’ll probably always have high strike-out totals, but if he could put up a .250-ish average with 20+ power and a high walk rate, that’d be great value from a 9th Round pick.

Can we please
just promote one of Taylor/Carter already? I’m sick of seeing Watson and Carson in LF.

Taylor
- Taylor has now played quite some time in CF and is also hitting nice. If only the power would come through.
Too many groundballs…he has been above 43%for his entire MiLB career. Compare that to Carter who hits around 30% GBs. Tough to get more than a single off of a grounder.
You're right with that
The percentage of extra base on his fly ball hits are pretty normal. The problem is that he hits the ball on the ground 48% right now, thats crazy high. Maybe he has some work with his swing in front of him before he is big league ready.
Would be nice if Taylor and Davis could trade swing styles

What's the plan when/if Carter comes up?
Cust in LF, I guess? It’s too bad that three of the best hitters in the system can only play 1b/DH (or rough OF). Sure would be nice if Barton could find another position or if Carter could play acceptable LF.
they may even try Carter in LF

Barton to 2B! We'll need one next year anyway...

Has anyone info about whats going on with Buck?
He is still on rehab assignment but hasn’t played the last two games. As I see it, a decision on him has to be made until saturday since the maximum 20 rehab days are over then. I hope he replaces Watson, could also platoon with Carson if they want.
But the two missed games concern me. An injury setback or already on the way to Chicago? Whats going on?
Hmm, interesting that he hasn't played for two games
I think he will replace Watson (and he should) once he’s ready to face Major League pitching again.

Should be right after Eric Chavez gets healthy
likely with equivalent results.

lots of errors from Carter
12 and he doesn’t play outfield every day? yeesh. even Taylor with 7 and Wimberley with 12 (although he plays infield also?).
I guess errors are common in the minors though right?

The errors are for all positions
He has 2 errors in the corners in 11 games. The rest of errors are at first base.
oh yeah
I forgot about 1st base. Still a lot though.

Not an A's minor leaguer but still interesting...
Brett Wallace was traded again today to the Astros for Anthony Gose in another prospect for prospect trade. I’m kind of surprised that the Blue Jays did this, Gose is a nice prospect but he is still very raw and most of his value comes in the form of potential as his current production is not that pretty. Maybe the Blue Jays soured on Wallace for some reason.
Poor Wallace
Traded three times already. I hope he grabs the first base job in Houston soon.

I know
I feel bad for him also. And I don’t think this is the last time he is traded since he might be destined for a DH role.

I find it surprising that this guy (Lucas Harrell) has such bad numbers,
particularly the low K rates. His stuff looks really good, lots of movement on a hard sinker, with a good lucking breaking ball… I wonder why he wasn’t striking people out in the minors.

i am starting to get very impatient
carter needs to be in oakland yesterday. and im starting to HATE barton now. i dont understand why people are in love with this guy. he is lead-off hitter with pathetic speed, playing a power position. 2 wrongs dont make a right.
Yeah, this is a pretty ridiculous thing to say

well help me understand.
besides a very good on base percentage what else is he good at offensively? every player near or better than him with OBP, is in a completely different league when it comes to slugging and OPS. he seems like a one trick pony.
Why does he have to hit a bunch of homers to be a good hitter?
He’s got a great eye, can hit the ball to all parts of the field, has decent power if not home run power, and plays a well above-average first base.
Most of the team doesn’t hit for power, so singling Barton out as someone you’re starting to hate is pretty silly. Carter can be here and DH or play LF if he gets enough work in there, and you’ll have more power. Barton, at least at this point, belongs at 1B even if he only hits a dozen homers. The rest of what he’s able to do makes up for that. He just needs to stop bunting.
Last of the Ninth - Photography
Getting on base is the single most important thing a hitter can do
It’s like asking, “Besides getting hitters out all the time, what does this pitcher do?” He gets hitters out. That’s his job. Barton’s job is to get on base, and he’s very, very good at it.
Also, he’s 24. And he plays in a pretty bad hitters’ park.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
no need to be a jackass
and i never mentioned home runs. simply driving in runs would be nice. with runners in scoring position (less than 2 outs) he is hitting .234. with 2 outs he is hitting .184. the OBP in those situations isnt anything to clap at. his K’s to BB’s are garbage compared to when he is hitting with nobody on base.
so he is only good when nobody is on base? how is that helpful?
And how many chances has he actually had to drive in runs compared to other spots in the lineup?
He’s hitting #2, not #4 or #5.
You said yourself he’s playing at a “power position” so if that’s not home runs what is it?
Last of the Ninth - Photography
Driving in runs is not a separate skill from generally hitting and slugging well
As far as this year is concerned, you’re talking about 125 PAs. Last year, he was better in those situations than he was without RISP.
It’s ridiculous to look at 125 PAs this year and conclude “he is only good when nobody is on base.”
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
and defense at first base is really an argumentative point?
ill give u that he is an above average defender despite being 2nd in errors for all first basemen in the majors. still, defense at first base is the last thing anybody should care about. he is cute when he stretches? he is also barely 6 foot. because he makes a great stretch means somebody who is 6’4 cant make the same play w/o stretching?
Defense at first base is the last thing anyone should care about?
Okay, I’m through wasting my time on this.
Last of the Ninth - Photography
Not even discussing whether Barton is/isn't good at defense
But a run saved is a run saved. It doesn’t matter if it’s coming from a 1B or a CF.
