Beat me to it. But, YAY!!!!!
Per Andy Seiler:
1. Michael Choice, OF, UT Arlington, #10 Overall, 6’0’’/215, Seiler Rating 1B2: Choice steadily climbed up boards over the course of the 2010 season, and he eventually landed squarely in the top ten. The Indians and Padres were interested in him in earlier spots, so the A’s got a good deal here for an all-around talented player that profiles to be a great Major League player, with his ceiling being at the all star level. He should be signing sooner rather than later. DOB: 11/10/89.

Now get Yordy Cabrera and Shipman signed, Billy!

Amazing how split scouts seem to be on Choice
I hear everything from future star CF to guy who’s a corner OF who probably won’t be able to make contact.

Lets hope hes a slightly better version of Chris Young.
"Carter's 25-game hitting streak isn't any normal streak. He's 46 for 97 (.474 average) during the run, adding 16 walks and compiling 81 total bases in the process. I'm out of superlatives for what he's doing." - Kevin Goldstein
I take that back.
Chris young is kinda crappy. Hope hes a MUCH better version of Young.

Chris Young has been pretty solid this season. He has posted a 2.9 WAR and a .361 wOBA.

Yeah hes ok this year.
But hes still a career 90OPS+ hitter with career OBP of 312.

Sooo.........he hits the ball out of the park a lot and plays stellar CF.
Where do I sign?

Chris Young playing in the Coli
has disaster written all over it.

I think something like .215/.280/.395 would be about what he'd do.
And I think I probably have the slugging a bit too high

He doesn't really play stellar CF, at least not all the time
He’s been very up and down for his career, and overall he’s a bit below average defensively.
He’s also a guy who hits the ball out of the park a decent amount, but I think his .351 park adjusted wOBA is misleading. In fact, I’m really not even sure how they get that number. He has a decent OBP this year (but usually it’s brutal), solid SLG, but he’s another guy with a nearly 300 point difference between home and way OPS.
People keep saying that you can’t use those splits, but when it’s HUNDREDS of points and the good stats come in a park so hitter friendly that Rajai Davis would look like Willie Damn Mays if he played there, I see Young as a guy who, in just about any other park in baseball, would be an 80 OPS+ guy.

Because they have a Choice...
100% Athletics, 100% Baseball. 2009 Athletics, 40% Baseball.
Get the man on a plane to Stockton!

Stockton's airport is plenty big for decent jet service
Its longest runway is only slightly shorter than SFO’s primary landing runways. There are even some commercial flights going into Stockton (Allegiant Air, among others)!
I liked the Choice pick.
But the guys Im really looking forward to seeing is Yordy Cabrera.

Also, that high school CF from Atlanta

Looks almost like slot
Slot in 2009 was $1,863,000 and Drew Storen (last year’s #10) signed for $1.6 million, but was a reach because it was comp for the Nationals not signing Crow in 2008.
It’s a pity he hasn’t been playing though. Would love to see him have a month of Stockton or KC under his belt already. Yordy Cabrera has got to be the next big signing, but I don’t expect that until near the deadline.

Would Kane County be too aggressive?
I’d like him to be able to start at Stockton at the beginning of next season.

He will prob go to Kane.
Green last year went to Stockton. I want Choice to go to Stockton as well. We shall see.

Yeah
I don’t see any reason for Choice not to go to Stockton.
"The A's have to be setting some record this year for simultaneously maximizing team quality and player anonymity. I guess that’s sort of their thing though." - Luke in MN
Yeah.
I mean we all know its a hitters league/park. Why not send him there and let him gain confidence hitting in a hitter friendly environment. Rather than go to a very pitcher friendly Kane county where he would maybe struggle and lose confidence.

Not disagreeing with you here
Just wondering, is Kane County as brutal to hitters once July and August roll around and the weather improves? I honestly have no idea.

JD might now I think hes from Chicago witch is near Kane County.

I don't know enough about KC's park effects
But Geneva is not close to the lake. It’s basically in the middle of a suburb that is in the middle of farm land (that whole urban sprawl thing, well, Geneva is basically on the edge of the Chicago suburban sprawl).
I’m just guessing, but I suspect things would get a little better since centerfield is to the northeast, so warm winds from the south and west would blow the ball out.
I haven’t been to enough games there to say definitively.

All good
It’s more than I knew before, so thanks! :)

He was from a small conference in college
He put up good numbers but never really faced top competition and still had problems with contact. The A’s should be smart with him and try to develop his skills rather than just promote him aggressively to A+ ball because it might be fun to see some of his fly balls carry out of the band box in Stockton.
Just because Stockton is a hitters league doesn’t mean it is easy for hitters to succeed there, it just makes their numbers look better. With a raw player like Choice it could be a terrible idea because rather than refine his game he might continue with bad habits that are masked by inflated Cal league numbers.

Good point on Green
That’d be awesome if Choice can get some time in at Stockton this year.
by bakerbeachboy on Jul 28, 2010 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions
Thanks!
Anyone think he’ll be playing by August 1st? And if he can hold his own for a month in Vancouver would that be enough of a showing to move him to Stockton at the start of next year?
by bakerbeachboy on Jul 28, 2010 4:26 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't think there's much chance he starts next year in Stockton
Unless he just destroys Vancouver and looks like a man among boys I can’t see the A’s skipping a level with him.
I’m not sure why it matters so much where he starts next year. He hasn’t taken a single swing as a professional, let’s let him start playing baseball and worry about what level he’s at later. How he plays is waaaaaaay more important than where he plays.
Fail on my part
I meant if he has a solid showing in Vancouver in the 1+ month remaining on their schedule, is that enough of a sample size to warrant starting him in Kane County next year.
by bakerbeachboy on Jul 28, 2010 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions
Ohh, in that case I'd it's very likely
As a college guy the A’s are not going to want him hanging out in extended spring training next spring waiting for short-season ball to start up. His time in Vancouver would probably have to be a complete disaster for the A’s to not start him in Kane County.
Yeah, he'll almost certainly start in KC unless he gets hurt or is truly, truly awful.

Wow
Sending a first round college guy to Vancouver?

He is only 20 though (turns 21 in November)
So I don’t think Vancouver is a bad sign.

Grant Green
Went straight to Stockton last year after signing, didn’t he? I can’t really remember but that’s what rings a bell.
by bakerbeachboy on Jul 28, 2010 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions
Yea, but he was considered to be much more polished offensively
Also he came from a big program at USC and had played against a much higher level of competition than Choice. Choice was drafted more for his upside and tools so while he was picked higher than Green he is less polished and will likely take a bit longer to move through the system.
Ah, ok
I’m definitely not a fan of skipping levels and if he’s a bit more “raw” KC is obviously what makes sense next year.
by bakerbeachboy on Jul 29, 2010 11:17 AM PDT up reply actions
I think what's more likely is Vancover this year
KC until the 2011 draftees start filtering in (and this year’s guys who are in Vancouver move up). If he’s doing well with the Cougars, I think he might go to Stockton for the second half of next year.
They might skip him a level if he kills Vancouver.
Does anybody know if they can/would be likely to send him to the AFL or some winter league?

DId James Simmons start in Midland then go to AFL the year he was drafted?

they can send 1 player from below AA
to qualify as being in AA I believe you have to be on the active roster for the last month.

I don't really pay close attention to this sort of thing
Who is more likely to go to the AFL? Stassi or Choice? Or is there someone else (I really don’t want them sending pitchers)?

Well They said Green is going there this year..
So unless hes promoted to AA he will be that guy.

Sending a college guy to short season ball just seems odd to me.
Kane County, at least.

AWESOME
I was in love with this pick as soon as I heard about it, unlike last year.
Surprised he fell to us, but then the two teams directly in front of us were Houston and MetsFAIL if I remember correctly.
Welcome to the A’s system Mr Choice, see you soon. :)

Interesting
As I recall Choice was a more controversial pick to ANers than Green was. I actually liked both picks, so I can’t object to either.
"Loyal? I'm the most loyal player money can buy." - Don Sutton
Here on the AN thread
there wasn’t much controversy about it. Several people voiced an opinion like, “Well, not my first choice, but it’s a decent pick”, but none of the yelling and screaming about it like we saw in every other year I can remember the draft being live-blogged on AN.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
In my opinion
Green’s college plate discipline etc, didn’t really do it for me considering the hype that surrounded him. His 29/91 BB/K in A+ this year kind of confirms that. EVERYBODY seems to hit at A+ level, so is his BB/K going to sink him at the less friendly AA level? Maybe.
On the other side of the coin, Choice looks like he can do it all. His numbers are more what I’d expect from a first round pick. And at CF too…….. :drool face:

Though not a lot of people think he'll stay in CF
That might be a snap judgment based on a) how big he is, and b) the fact that he was a big fish in a small pond, and by far the best athlete and player on his team — I don’t remember reading any scouting reports that say that he doesn’t get good jumps on the ball or anything.
I’m really interested in Shipman as a future CF, though he’s obviously a long ways off.

And Green plays SS, the most difficult defensive position, so y'know....
"You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."
I think it was more that people really wanted Grandal or Sale, who both fell out of the top 10
Pam liked my old sig better.
And since he was projected by some to go a little bit higher
It’s not as though the A’s reached.

Yes, exactly.

In contrast to, say, the James Simmons pick
which was about as popular as a Daric Barton sac bunt.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
Was Simmons a reach?
Everyone wanted Porcello of course, but I think Simmons was considered like a Justin Marks. It was a vanilla pick but around where he was expected to go. Of course, Weeks was a real stretch.
"Loyal? I'm the most loyal player money can buy." - Don Sutton
I wanted Scheppers
but I knew that was a stupid choice.
Choice was not a good pick IMO… I still had three or for guys on my board above him.
