Around SBN: Penn State Recruiting Roundup Is Set For A Big Junior Day

For those going to be extras in "Moneyball"....

Advice based on last night's experience....everyone else who was there, chime in.

Arrive 30-60 minutes before the time the BeInAMovie people told you was when the doors open.  I arrived at 9:45 for the 10:30 shift which was supposedly as early as possible, and I was in line until 11:30 PM.

Arrive with a full stomach and all the food and drink you wish to consume and share while you are there.  There is horrible airline coffee with powdered creamer, water, trail mix, and hard candy.  That's it.  No vendors (although a couple of Coliseum vendors are playing themselves walking around the stands, they have no food.)

Star-divide

Don't worry too much about the historical authenticity of what you're wearing or bringing...lots of people were wearing post-2002 clothing.

Don't fret about being thrown out if you take pictures....I didn't see anyone who had snuck a camera in, but everyone was taking pictures with their cell phones.

Heed the request to dress warmly in layers, not so that you can more accurately portray the climate conditions of September 4, 2002, but because it is freezing in the Coliseum at 3 AM any day of the year.

Wear comfy shoes, because the extra-wranglers moved us from section to section about five times, sometimes returning to exactly the same seats we had been in hours before.

Don't bother looking for your noisemaker; the producers were constantly asking us not to make so much noise and not to act so excited, and in particular, they asked me to stop using my tambourine and some other person to put away the cowbell.  :(

That said, it was fun.  I would have preferred it if the producers were better organized and used the extras more wisely, but maybe it will get better as the shoot goes on.   I'm in hopes that the front-row LF bleacher shots with Saint, GreenNGoldGirl, YonYonson, me, and my new friend Victor who I met on BART will make it in to the final cut, but if not, I'm still happy I did it.

There are some things about the bits we could see that were good and authentic...the scoreboard showing the Expos and ANA instead of LAA, for example.   There are some player casting decisions that are a little....interesting, that's all I'm going to say about it.

Does anyone know about release forms?

My brother and his friend are already signed up to go on Thursday but they are both under 18 and would need a signed release form in advance. I can’t find one on the website.. Can anyone pick up one if they happen to see it and email it to me if that’s no trouble?? Email is ironicsocks AT aol DOT com.

It should be part of the "set pass" printout

There was one email with the “info pack” and then a second one with the “set pass”. You don’t need to bring the info pack, but you do need the set pass, and when you click to print it out, the release is part of it – there was a place for parent or guardian signatures on page 2.

Hey Guys

Please look for me on the field and say hi!

Also, no laughing at the kid playing David Justice http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1212071/ last night they had him reenacting when Justice stumbled into the wall. He is a right hander trying to emulate the left handed Justice and the crowd was snickering when he would throw because he looked silly!

Couldn't they just use some computer trickery and flip the image?

Stephen Bishop was great, very friendly

And we enjoyed his dropping his pants in left field several times (to change jerseys). The guy playing T-Long was also quite fun. Which was good since we got to see a LOT of them.

Advice based on last night

I arrived at 4 and there was already a line 1000 deep. Also, bring lots of food, as they don’t give you jack. I will be hanging out around the backstop or A’s dugout. If you get peckish around 2 am hit me up, I raid the snack truck between scenes and am loaded with snacks!

I am Going Tomorrow Night

Do you get out on time? (like 5:30 am)? Is there a lot of idle time or what do you do between 11:30 and 5:30?

by solscreen on Jul 27, 2010 4:23 PM PDT reply actions

We got out at 4:45 am or so

There is some idle time, but it isn’t really scheduled…they didn’t take a formal break, there would be intervals when the crew was consulting on the field for 20 or 30 minutes at a time and the extras had nothing to do, but we didn’t know when our next part would come. You can get up and go to the bathrooms, but extras are not supposed to move around the ballpark otherwise, although I heard a rumor that some people might have sneaked up to the untarped third deck for a moment.

here’s the cast, its interesting and kind of a strange feeling to see actors playing ballplayers that we were watching not to long ago

I echo all of EM's points

And I’d highly recommend going with a group, because there’s a lot of down time. It helps to have friends to talk with in between scenes.

Stephen Bishop is awesome. He had a great sense of humor about the whole situation and you could tell he and actor playing T-Long were having a blast.

WE WANT FRUIT PUNCH! WE WANT FRUIT PUNCH!

I came home and had a huge dinner at 11pm….and I still want the punch they promised….

I signed up for the 4pm – 11:45pm shift, and we were done by 10:30, so that was good. But I would echo all the other comments here….

but apparently I’m on standby (even though I signed up like three weeks ago) so I may not go.

I was wondering why I hadn’t heard anything. I had signed up for 8/4 — which had been a free time slot — and now I’m on stand by. Oh well.

by Dreamkiller Jenkins on Jul 27, 2010 8:31 PM PDT reply actions

That's not accurate.

Extras are often paid (albeit not a lot). For a crowd scene like this, no, but regular extra work is generally paid.

I was the guy yelling to “Stephanie Fong” to come back to Section 130 because someone picked up her purse/id when we were moving from 122. That is my sister…I will be there again “late shift” tonight.

I totally underestimated the Brad Pitt factor

There were lots of screaming women, and some didn’t even know what the movie was called or what it was about. I had a good time, but I felt like a nerd at comic-con complaining about the crowd and various inaccuracies.

I won’t give anything away, but let’s just say no A’s crowd has ever gotten more upset about basic baseball activities in the history of the team.

Let’s hope the editor can get creative.

At my session the crowd was mostly real fans

Except for the extremely drunk cougar (wearing a Holliday jersey) and the slightly befuddled young guy she was hitting on. However, the director did keep telling us to tone it down as we hammily reacted to Justice bobbling a catch, over and over again. Acting is hard.

Wednesday night - first group

Yes, yes, yes…agree with it all. One thing to add: Even if you don’t have a confirmed reservation, you can go. They kept asking us to stay and telling us to come any other day and time even if the website and the guys on the phone said they were full. Also, you don’t need to show your admit pass, and they have lots of forms there for you to fill out. Just go and soak it in. Good time! I brought my 9/4/2002 scored game with me from my scorebook – yes, I am a nerd! – and that was lots of fun to refer to.

by mathletics on Jul 29, 2010 9:41 AM PDT reply actions

Yeah, that kinda weirded me out.

Because I’d like to go again, but they were checking set passes to get into the parking lot and I’m not sure how on the same page everyone with them is…? So I’m a little nervous about showing up and going “Uh…”

So would you do it again?

I keep hearing it’s a great time, but that is then qualified by many people particularly on some other websites with “I’d never do it again.” Thoughts?

by athletics68 on Jul 29, 2010 9:55 AM PDT reply actions

I would. I enjoyed myself last night for the overnight.

Sure, there was some annoying people who knew nothing about baseball/the A’s and it was pretty slow but I also met some cool people and it was surreal to watch moments I remember done through people with familiar uniforms and unfamiliar faces.

I probably wouldn't

And I was a film major, that shit fascinates me. But filming is a slow, slow process, and frankly I was kind of bored. Not to mention annoyed, rationally or not, by all of the inaccuracies

"I was right and you were wrong." - Ray Fosse

by kbtoyz on Jul 30, 2010 9:16 AM PDT up reply actions

I'd be annoyed too

This movie is one of those “based on a true story” type movies. It should be as accurate as possible. However when they hire a right handed David Justice and put the rather rotund Jonah Hill in a Paul DePodesta it’s kinda hard to watch I’d imagine.

by athletics68 on Jul 30, 2010 11:25 AM PDT up reply actions

We went yesterday evening and had fun. I'm glad we went!

Got there at about 4:15p for the 4:30p shift and probably didn’t get in until about 5:30. We lucked out with where we were sat, because for a while, they had Jonah Hill just a few rows in front of us while filming a scene. I might just be in the movie!

Also, best line heard all night, yelled out while Brad Pitt was walking around: “I loved you in Titanic!!!”

I bleed green and gold!!! (my doctor is worried)

by Vaillant on Jul 29, 2010 12:37 PM PDT reply actions

i had fun last night too

wasn’t sitting too close to the field, so not holding out hopes of making the final cut, but it was pretty fun since i had some friends to BS with during the plentiful downtime.

totally agree with kbtoyz on the exaggerated crowd response. i don’t recall seeing people jump out of their seats while throwing “thumbs down” gestures and booing when the opposing team scores 3 runs to pull within 8.

and yet another vote for “definitely bring food.” we brought sandwiches from ike’s place, which makes anything better.

kinda wish i’d won the TV raffle though.

So I'm going tonight and have tempered excitement about it

Did you get any say in where you were seated? Could you rush to be first row in a new section or were they just sticking you wherever?

by darooster on Jul 30, 2010 5:02 PM PDT reply actions

They'll herd you to a couple of sections, but where you sit in them is up to you

People were oddly reluctant to sit in the front row…non-AN people, that is. I don’t know why you’d go be an extra and then sit down in the back row, but whatever.

Must be different for the last night

I have to say I was pretty disappointed with the whole process. Showed up at 6:40 for the 7pm shift (which had already been delayed from the original 4pm shift to 6 and then to 7). Stood in line outside until about 9:15 before they let us in. Meanwhile we were all freezing our asses off and a good number of folks gave up and left during hour 2 in line. When we finally got in and they started filming about 9:45 then just filmed this one scene over and over again from a game vs the Indians in 02 when Beane went out to the dugout to confront Howe. Since they’d waited so long to start and kept refilming the scene that was the only scene they did before the 11pm break for “lunch” and the 12pm shift coming on. I bailed at that point.

While it was an interesting experience I don’t think I’d bother again.

by athletics68 on Aug 6, 2010 12:40 AM PDT reply actions

Did the Beane/Howe Confrontation really happen?

I never saw the game….

But, I hate to say you missed Mr. Pitt by about an hour as he and PSH were in the scene.

by Sniff009 on Aug 6, 2010 11:53 AM PDT reply actions

Nah I saw Pitt and PSH

And I vaguely remember the scene they were filming actually happening.
