Stop running Suzuki into the ground by starting him everyday, and I'll like this move more.

Exactly
Would 2011 be his first year of arb (if he hadn’t signed this contract of course)?

If I understand the mention right from Rotoworld...
The new contract takes over his 2010 contract so he’d be making roughly 5 million/ year (average obviously, it’s probably distributed differently) if the 2014 option kicks in. I’m worried that this contract is gonna bite us the last couple years…Geren is gonna turn Zooks knees into sawdust by 2012.

Congratulations Kurt!
I haven’t really looked at the money or examined the contract all that closely but Suzuki is one of my favorite players on the A’s and I’m happy I’ll likely be watching him play for the A’s for a while now.
(Unless Beane gets an offer he can't refuse from the Boston Red Sox this Offseason)
These contracts make players even more inviting to a team like the Red Sox.

Yea a trade is always a possibility
But I don’t think he is that much more enticing than he was before. He was the type of player that would likely be undervalued by arbitration anyways.
Screw the Red Sawx!
CANNOT HAVE! ZOOKS STAYS IN OAKLAMND DAMMIT!
Nice move here, Billy. You made A’s fans happy today! I hope Zooks goes on a tear now and we sweep the White Sox! Go A"s!

Trade Donaldson
I really like him, but I think that’s the best way to go. Donaldson and Breslow to the BoSox for Kalish? Am I dreaming here?
Yes. You're dreaming.
Choosy Feebas choose Leopold Bloom nipples
Why trade him?
Even if Suzuki stays healthy all four years, he’s still a pretty damn good offensive prospect that can handle 3B and possibly 2B. Not to mention that Powell’s knees are pretty much made of glass.
I must've missed it
When has Donaldson ever been linked to 2B?
Also, is it possible for Josh to handle a COF position?

Never. My bad.
IIRC, he was a shortstop in high school, though, so he’s more athletic than most catchers.
there was talk of trying to keep him there as a freshman at auburn

Actually, this is what I was thinking of.
It’s from the 2007 MLB.com (so how much stock you put in it is up to you) Draft Report on him––emphasis added:
Fielding: Donaldson is new to full-time catching, but has good hands and caught fairly well. Some think he’s athletic enough to handle a Biggio-like move to second.I knew I remembered something like that, but I wasn’t sure where. Obviously, that was three years ago and he’s been catching for most of that time. Apparently, he’s gotten bigger, too. The draft report has him at 201, MiLB.com has him at 215 now.
Just like Haren & Swisher before him...
Suzuki just signed his way into being traded.
-Yeah, I just posted that, but my opinion is apparently "wrong" a significant portion of the time though, so take it as you will.
I don't think so
I honestly think Beane is looking at the core of this team, and decided it would be beneficial to sign his very talented, young battery of Brett Anderson and Kurt Suzuki as the centerpieces of the franchise.

i didn't want to be the one to say it
but that was my first thought
Don't piss on the parade!
Can’t you just be happy Beane locked up a key player? Yeesh!

I think it puts the A's in a very good position in the fourth year of the deal (three years from now).
As long as he’s healthy, the A’s could trade Suzuki with roughly a year and a half left on his contract, at which point he’d be owed about $13 million. In this scenario the A’s could ideally get back something better than they would for a mere “rental player,” especially if they kick in some salary.
I don’t have any problem with a contract that increases a player’s trade value, and I don’t think this move necessarily predicates a trade in the next 12 months, or two years (although it all depends). The A’s could get a lot of mileage out of Kurt and still trade him for something good.

If he did, he might think that's a feature not a bug.

I like this, but I'll admit to being surprised
I honestly thought Suzuki, based on the A’s seemingly using him up and a lack of any great urgency on both parties to sign a contract, was on the way out.
In related news, I got an email offering me 20% off tickets to the archery at the 2012 Olympics. Do I want I go? Goldurn it I do

This is good. Very good.
Now, as has already been mentioned, this is certainly no guarantee that he will be here all that time, but I hope so. If the team does well and contends, the likelihood of him staying increases. But, if he’s good enough he could easily be traded without a long-term contract as well, so that’s a wash.
The part about not running him into the ground is my only concern.
Bob Geren... Jackie Moore without the personality.
Good. Now, an idea:
I’m glad the team has secured Zook for the next several years. Now, I’d like to see them protect their investment a bit. I’d love to see Landon Powell be used as a “personal catcher” for one of the starters.
This would insure Suzuki getting a day or two off every week, and still keep Powell’s bat fresh for the rest of the week when he might be used as a pinch hitter.

Great news
If we could ever find a clean up hitter, Suzuki will make this contract look like a huge steal.
Finally, A Set Leader
Great! Some stability at last. Kurt’s a good team leader, and he’s a big part of the team. He’s going to play 120+ games in 2013, no doubt. Still, maybe sign Powell for at least 2011 in case Donaldson isn’t ready for “The Show”.
