DLD 7-2-10 - 2.2 Million Dollar Man

Word out of Venezuela is that the A's have inked one of the top international prospects, 3B Renato Nunez for $2.2 Million dollars (Baseball America, MLB Trade Rumors). Will he be half an Ynoa? I just hope he doesn't play half as many games.

Meanwhile, big changes in Arizona. The Diamondbacks have fired their GM Josh Byrnes and Manager AJ Hinch and replaced them with someone I will not name and their director of player personnel Jerry Dipoto. Reactions here.

Clearly he’s probably one of the most talented young, raw talents out of Central America right now.
Get him some good equipment, training, you never know what a guy like this can do, that’s why it’s wise the A’s sign a guy or 2 like this a year, because for under $5 Mil a year, if 1 or 2 of these guys becomes a star every 5 years, it’s well worth the investment

Easy mistake to make

Baseball in Latin America is overwhelmingly a Caribbean phenomenon. The South American players you see are all from the Caribbean coast. That’s why you’ll see plenty of players from Venezuela or Colombia, but hardly ever from Brazil or Argentina or Peru. Even within Colombia, if you look at where they’re from it’s always the north coast areas like Barranquilla or Cartagena, almost never in the interior like Bogotá or Medellín.

isn’t this similar to the way we signed Tejada, a raw teenager out of the Dominican, albeit for far less money..

Tejada was signed for $2,000

At a time when the A’s weren’t terribly invested in the International market for players.

In a way this could be Beane’s new moneyball strategy, where in addition to spending money in the draft the A’s have been linked to many of the high profile Latino signees since Ynoa…

i think the intention of the message is the combination of the both

and while both translations are acceptable (well at least in castellano, not sure about how it is used in argentina), you are probably right – rematch might be better one in this context if one has to choose a single word

by elcroata on Jul 2, 2010 10:34 AM PDT up reply actions

yes, it’s a dual meaning in argentina too: rematch and payback. (linguistic aside: castallano del río de la plata is the official name of what argentines speak, although the rest of latin america calls its language español.). but since in english the meaning of revenge is just one (with hints of rambolike violence), using it in this case paints a slightly different picture. but “we’re looking forward to the rematch” carries everything intended without adding foreign connotations.

by stranahanahan on Jul 2, 2010 9:53 AM PDT up reply actions

It might be tought to work out though

I imagine he would have to be claimed on waivers and he is out of options so even if the A’s were able to claim him he would have to stay on the big league roster. He’s been pretty terrible this year but I guess he wouldn’t be all that worse than the last guy in our bullpen. But if he still can be “fixed” I doubt it’s going to happen with him pitching a couple innings a week as the 7th man in the bullpen.

The best thing for Gallagher would probably be if he got claimed by a team like the Pirates, Orioles, or Royals who could afford to make him the 5th starter and not be afraid to give him a couple months to work things out because they have nothing to lose.

by OkayJay81 on Jul 2, 2010 10:37 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree there.

I guess I’m trying to rationalize ways where Tyson Ross could be sent back down to AAA to get stretched out and he could be replaced with a reasonably talented arm in the current bullpen.

If the chance to get Sean Gallagher back in the green and gold is what it takes to convince the A’s that Tyson Ross isn’t really doing anyone any good in the bullpen then I’m on board.

At this point I’ve just decided I’m a happier person if I stop thinking about why Ross continues to be a mediocre middle reliever on this team and just accept it.

Oh yeah, I agree with this.

and the A’s can develop pitchers and have history of doing so, and Cedrick Bowers/Tyson Ross both need to be off the 25 man. Especially Ross.

But then, the best place for Gallagher to get claimed (and the first or second in waiver position) is definitely the Pirates, a team where he can be a starter for the remainder of the season, and is in a weak division with 3 other bad NL teams (Cubs, Astros, Brewers), along with the Reds and Cardinals, which are good teams, but they’re not AL teams.

He’s really excited about the possibility of meeting someone who might not exist.

He says he hasn’t met anyone who might not exist since he looked in the mirror this morning.

RAFs, here's how to get timely info post-verdict

The prosecution in the Mehserle trial is presenting rebuttal now; then the judge will instruct jurors and they will probably begin deliberating later this afternoon. If there is no verdict today, the indication from the court is that they won’t deliberate again until Tuesday morning. If a verdict is reached late today, the court may choose to hold on to it until tomorrow morning if it seems it would be disruptive to the afternoon commute.

I’m sure all ANers, whether we claim the 510 as home or not, hope that any aftermath of the news will be peaceful, and many in the community are working toward that end today. But it’s prudent to be prepared. You can sign up for email and text message alerts from BART here and the City of Oakland here (scroll down to lower left of page). You can sign up for emergency updates only so that you won’t get pestered with notices about elevators out of service in Dublin or the updated City Council agenda.

Peace.

Thanks EM

I work in the City Center, and I’ve been told that the Judge has said that there will not be a verdict today, although I haven’t been able to confirm that from another source (this is through our office manager who heard it from building management). I hope that the people of Oakland show their true colors, and that we don’t get too many outside agitators as we did last time.

by el generico on Jul 2, 2010 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions

We can be pretty confident

There will be no verdict. this is a very complicated case and the jury is going to START deliberating today. I doubt they get past picking a foreperson and organizing how they will proceed.

I mainly skipped "Voyager"

Oh, right the point of the comment: Of course he could tell us, because either way it’s already going to have happened (English doesn’t have a tense for this, does it?). the problem with all this timeline changing is that it involves seriously pre-destination and no free will, so if he tells us, it will be because he was meant to.
Or you could just go with the most current “Star Trek” franchise, and just have them change the timeline to split into an alternate universe.
C’mon LS, I expected better of you. 8]

The split timeline only means anything for the people who have seen both sides of it.

i.e. Ed Prime.

For anyone else, their perspective is that their timeline is the prime. Now, depending on where the divergence is, enough of the alt timeline would be the same as prime and the information would be just as harmful.

Inspirational Friday Quotes regarding the Boof. Pt. 1

Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the Boof.

Boof is certainly a branch of morality and a very important one to society.

I am a firm believer in the people. If given the Boof, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis.

There is another old poet whose name I do not now remember who said, “Boof is the daughter of Time.”

A lie gets halfway around the world before the Boof has a chance to get its pants on.

The Boof is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is.

All the religions of the world, while they may differ in other respects, unitedly proclaim that nothing lives in this world but Boof.

Even if you are a minority of one, the Boof is the Boof.

Boof is the most valuable thing we have. Let us economize [him].

Words are but symbols for the relations of things to one another and to us; nowhere do they touch upon absolute Boof.

Boof is on the side of the oppressed.

The Boof is found when men are free to pursue it.

You shall know the Boof and the Boof shall set you free.

Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me Boof [Bonser].

I am very fond of Boof, but not at all of martyrdom.

If you seek Boof you will not seek victory by dishonorable means, and if you find Boof you will become invincible!

Inspirational Friday Quotes regarding the Boof. Pt. 2

The Boof is more important than the facts.

Nature has planted in our minds an insatiable longing to see the Boof.

First and last, what is demanded of genius is love of Boof.

Justice is Boof in action.

Boof is like the sun. You can shut [him] out for a time, but [he] ain’t goin’ away.

Boof is so obscure in these times, and falsehood so established, that, unless we love the Boof, we cannot know it.

It is in our idleness, in our dreams, that the submerged Boof sometimes comes to the top.

From the MLBtr post:
Rumors are already flying about who Arizona might hire as their next full-time general manager. Morosi’s story notes that Dodgers assistant GM Logan White and former Padres GM Kevin Towers will be given “serious consideration” for the job. Jim Bowden of Sirius XM Radio has those two plus three other assistant GMs (Kim Ng of the Dodgers, Ben Cherington of the Red Sox and “Avila,”

I don't think so

The keepers view was covered by two players and he took the step to the wrong side before he saw the ball. And the ball was not fluttering (the main complaint against Jabulani), but rather curved like a hard slider, as it was hit with the inner side of the foot.

I only saw a replay on a small airport TV from about 30 feet away
