What game is that?

It never happened. He’s allowing 4 or fewer in 13 straight starts. If the A’s win 7 of those, you’re talking about what a consistent, solid veteran he is. You and everybody else.

Who's even ripping on him?

I think everyone jumped that ship as soon as he started being a little more consistent.

At the start of the season when he had a $10,000,000 paycheck with more BBs than Ks and an ERA north of 6, that’s when we ripped his ass across the board.

by danmerqury on Jul 10, 2010 8:58 PM PDT up reply actions

He's ripped on because he's making ten million dollars and

his walk rate is up more than 1 BB per 9 innings over his career while his K rate is similarly down 1 per 9 innings. He’s making a lot of money and all the component stats are saying he’s pitching at a #4 starter level.

"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."

by lenscrafters on Jul 10, 2010 8:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Are you kidding?

People are all about the plus/minus of his walk rate.

You stat-heads kill me—and I’m sure I was reading everything Bill James wrote before you were born.

People care about winning. They don’t care what a guy is making if he’s winning. They don’t give a shit about his K/BB rate.

If he’d won 7 of those last 13 starts due solely to run support the narrative about him on this very enlightened site would be positive.

by RLangford on Jul 10, 2010 9:01 PM PDT up reply actions

The statheads care about his component ratios.

The less stats-inclined, but intelligent, fans probably notice his mediocre ERA and judge him mostly off of that. I’d say that’s most of the people on this site.

Only a few, casual/not that well learned fans rip him because of his W/L record. As far as I can tell, pretty much no one on this site has done that.

Everyone’s disappointed that he’s making 10 million dollars and was expected to be the ace of the staff but is instead pitching like a #4 starter.

"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."

by lenscrafters on Jul 10, 2010 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I think anyone expecting him to come in and be the ace after missing a whole year had unrealistic expectations

For the most part, he’s probably pitched about the way he should have been expected to – poor early on, better as he gets some consistency back. The K/BB ratio is a concern when it’s down as much as it’s been, no doubt.

Last of the Ninth - Photography

by Flashfire on Jul 10, 2010 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn't expect him to be an ace.

But that’s the way he was marketed by the A’s (immediately proclaiming him opening day starter and talking him up as the leader of the staff) and he was indeed given the highest annual salary since Chavez. I think the casual fan at least expected him to keep his ERA under 4.

"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."

by lenscrafters on Jul 10, 2010 9:46 PM PDT up reply actions

That's a valid point

Though especially recently, I’ve found more about the A’s marketing department to question, so.

Last of the Ninth - Photography

by Flashfire on Jul 10, 2010 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Look, I have a whole lot of respect for you

but you aren’t really hearing me.

I’m trying to say that given exactly what he’s done in his last thirteen starts, if we’d been somehow giving him enough for him to have flipped his run percentage, then the feeling about him her would be very different.

No matter how educated we all are on component ratios and more, that’s how I’m certain it would be.

People would be pointing out that he’s flawed, that he hasn’t been ideal, that his ERA was still high from the early meltdowns. But the general feeling about him would be positive and the characterization would be of a staff leader who went out there every start, ate up innings, and gave us a good shot to win.

by RLangford on Jul 10, 2010 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Fine, agree to disagree.

I just haven’t heard people grouse about his W/L record here at all. I think if it was flipped, and everything else stayed the same, people here would just be snarking about how lucky he’s been getting with run support.

"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."

by lenscrafters on Jul 10, 2010 9:59 PM PDT up reply actions

The good news about the starts from May 8 to now (not adding tonight's in yet)...

…is he’s got his K/BB ratio back up to 2.58 after it started out at an even 1.00 in his first six starts. Over the current period he’s also improved his BB/9 to 2.83 when it had been an awful 4.75 in those first six. Further, since the K/9 ratio was the same 4.75 in those six starts, it’s been 7.31 from that point forward.

Going by those past dozen starts, the K/BB ratio is still under his career average of 3.64 and his BB/9 ratio is a bit worse than his career 2.1 total, but at least the K/9 is about in line with the 7.5 it’s been overall. Some good signs for teams that might be thinking of trading for him, at least.
