Suzuki Strengthens All-Star Bid as A's De-Wing Angels 10-1

I gotta say...I wasn't expecting that!

The Angels had their ace going. We had a pitcher that opened the season as the reserve reserve SP. They were in first place riding a six game win streak. We were way down in third. Oh, and Eric Patterson led off.

And yet, the A's banged out a season-high 18 hits, including two home runs from Kurt Suzuki and Jack Cust. Ryan Sweeney increased his season average to .324 by going 3 for 5, Eric Patterson went 3 for 5 (in the cheapest way possible, but 3 for 5 it was), and oh, before I forget, Kurt Suzuki had three additional hits to go with his three-run shot for a monster 4 RBI 4 hit day.

Vin Mazzaro was more than effective, scattering five hits over five innings. He managed to stay out of trouble until the fifth inning, where his one mistake, a hanging curve to Michael Ryan, was sent crashing off of the wall for a double with no outs. The Mazzaro of old likely wouldn't have done this, but today Vin quickly got three outs in a row, allowing only one run to score.

Jered Weaver, on the other hand, was just bad enough to give Angels fans fits, but not bad enough to take his team out of the game. That was his bullpen's doing, as the A's piled on 7 runs in the final two innings to turn a slim lead into a slug-fest.

The A's charge into tomorrow's game with momentum as Joe Saunders faces Mr. Perfect, Dallas Braden.

thats the best thing about being a fan

if a player pisses you off and you complain about it, then he starts shredding, you win regardless. Its like betting against your fave team to lose, if they lose, you get money, if they win, your team wins.

This is why I'm not toooo happy when a bad player does well over a short time

Sure, I’m glad those 3 “hits” helped the A’s win yesterday. But I’m not happy if a bad player gets more playing time because the manager is a dummy and he thinks the guy is good (and before people argue against this, Geren SAID Patterson was showing him something earlier this year when he was just as awful as he is now).

Suzuki has 7 in 38 games

that = 30 over 162. Do you not think thats a bit much? I do. But anyway if he is blossoming now he can do that as often as possible, much like Mauer and other great players GIDP a bit too…

Kouz is our only option at 3B this year and next, he does indeed GIDP a lot (Sweeney too).

We have many catcher options either available now (Powell) or very soon (Donaldson). Max Stassi just was named to the A-ball all-star team as well. We dont have that depth at 3B that we do at C. Plus, I might be off here but it just feels like Suzuki tends to GIDP in close games, or when it matters, the “here’s our big chance to score runs against a tough team”, Kouz seems to do it more when we are getting beat badly…its just a feeling I have I might be well wrong on this though.

-Yeah, I just posted that, but my opinion is apparently "wrong" a significant portion of the time though, so take it as you will.

Wow, Great Hitting display!

Reminded me of the Bugs Bunny Cartoon where he’s playing baseball, and the other team, The Maulers, were coming up one after another and getting hits! The A’s had a month’s worth of Hits in One NIGHT! I was glad to see Cust get that Homer! Yea, it didn’t mean much to the final score, but it meant a lot to Cust, you can believe THAT! This team intends to stay in it till the end. They have no fear whatsoever of the Angels. Our pitching matches up pretty well with theirs. If we can get the hits we need, we can beat the Angels and shut them down in the process. Glad to the team first pitch swinging! Go A’s !!

Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!

by FaStRmAn on Jun 8, 2010 10:44 PM PDT reply actions

My wife and I were on the Scoreboard tonight!

No, not the couple that proposed, though that was sort of cute. We brought a group of 25 friends (well, ok, only 21 made it) for group tickets (only $15 per in section 108, row 9, just behind the bullpen). So they gave us a free hat, 2 tickets for another game, and a big shoutout to “Jeff & DeAnna & Friends.”

Didja see it? In any case, it was a fun game. Nice to watch Mazzaro work through 5 full innings and leave on his own power without getting pulled. Nice to see Blevins pull that beautiful curve to end the Ziggy-troubled 7th inning before the A’s put it away. I think that Blevins pitch should be in the Wrap!

And of course, nice to see Suzuki put the game away, and then Cust show that he can hit a homer, even though I like it better when he pulls ‘em. Kouz tried to follow with another, but it didn’t work out – he didn’t get anything high.

Patterson was riot all game, with his bloopy and broken bat bounders. Whatever. At least he managed not to kill Kouz, when he ran towards him for a foul ball on the bullpen mound and almost knocked him over. We’ve had enough of that kind of stuff for the year, I think.

Oh, and Gross’s RBI single was a beautiful shot. I really like that guy.

were you with that group that was … um, drinking rather heavily? lol Seemed like there was a company party or something going on. How close were you to those two chicks with the Angels jerseys on directly behind the bullpen (Figgins and Willits)?

Anyways, we got some good energy going over on that side and heckled the hell out of any Angels fan in the vicinity. Damn, I love it when the fans get a little … I don’t know … when we get a little attitude. No need to get rude or nasty (and we didn’t), but I love it when fans of the opposing team don’t get out without stingin’ a bit. This is Oakland, damnit, and if you’re gonna wear the other team’s colors, you need to hear about it. We showed up tonight.

Return to Mazzaro World for an evening

Blueberry smoothies in the blender, all is well.

Kind of a statement game… the statement being that no one of these AL West clubs is really all that more dominant than any of the others. Even the M’s are only, what, 7 back? That’s nothing in June.

More statements of fact:

1) Mazzaro, whilst no “St.” Stephen Strasbourg, is a starter and stands a decent chance of being a good one, as long as his confidence and career are not ruined prematurely but tossing him out there in a long relief role with the bases loaded and no one out, as has been the (ridiculous) plan of late.

2) Kurt Suzuki is developing into a monster on both sides of the ball… his framing of the 2-1 pitch to Aybar from Blevins was the pitch that turned this game. There were about 6 or 7 pitches in this game that were mislocated, but which Zook moved the glove and kept his body still enough to sell it Bill Miller for the strike call… the 2-1 from JB to Aybar was so critical because it’s unlikely that Blevins goes to a big loopy curve on 3-1, but on 2-2 he feels free to trust that for the K to end the inning. Even if he does get the 3-1 over and it goes to 3-2, then you have the runners moving and any hit that finds a gap ties what was, at that point, a very tight game.

3) This fill in 1B the Sleggos featured tonight (Michael Ryan) has a sweet, Mark Texiera-ish swing but in the field and on the bases, he looked rather clueless and if you go to HH (I haven’t yet, bit I will LOLOL) they’ll probably give him BotG (how Orange County is Blame of the Game, anyway?) for failing to take 3rd on Aybar’s groundout that scored the Sleg’s lone run… if he’d have done that he’d have scored on Izturis’ subsequent grounder and this would’ve been a 3-2 game and might have turned out differently or closer.

I stand corrected… they are so dumb over there that they wanna blame Napoli cuz he couldn’t throw out Larry Flynt trying to steal ROFLMAO

Had to work so missed the game, again.

Just finished watching the condensed game. The big thing that stood out, besides Zooks being on fire, is how good Vinny was. He’s suddenly developed a strikeout pitch – two of them infact. I’m sure he threw a slider for a swinging strike three at one point and then several times through a curveball for a swinging strike too. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come ’cos you can never have enough pitching!

Oh and what the hell is up with Pennington? He looks awful at the plate now. He’s pushing so much that he’s swinging at everything.

by OldhamA on Jun 9, 2010 2:39 AM PDT reply actions

He also threw his curve for at least one called strike

I don’t remember ever seeing him do that before. With very, very few exceptions, major-league pitchers need to be able to throw the fastball and at least one off-speed pitch consistently in the strike zone. If you can’t do that, hitters will just wait for a fastball and rip it. During his last outing, I suggested that Vin learn a splitter because it could be a “swing-and-miss” pitch for him, but if he’s actually developing better command of all of his pitches, to the point where he can spot his fastball and throw a breaking pitch in the strike zone, then I think he can succeed without the splitter.

Mazzaro

Still needs to get ahead in the count more often. From what I saw, he was 2-0 on the leadoff hitter almost every inning. He needs to starting throwing 1st pitch strikes, or more patient teams are gonna smash him.

Inning 2, 0-1 to Matsui
Inning 3, 2-0 to Frandsen
Inning 4, 2-0 to Hunter
Inning 5, 2-0 to Rivera (singled, the only leadoff batter to get on base)

There is a lot to like with Mazzaro. The movement is there. The command is not there, and this will be the area that he will need to work on at the MLB level (Similar to Gio). I just wish he could be in AAA working on these things, but it is what it is.

Great glove, so many singles, high BA….its odd to have a corner OF like that but he’s worth having around. He hits more doubles than Ichiro though, weird fact about Ichiro: he’s only hit 30+ doubles in his career TWICE.

But yeah, Sweeney = poor mans Ichiro. Anyone else seeing this as a fair comp so far? Or do you believe that the doubles might turn into HR’s someday?

You do understand BABIP doesnt work like that for singles hitters, right?

Ichiro’s career BABIP is .360. 3 out of his last 4 seasons its been over .380.

If your swing permits you to only hit the ball just over the INF heads into the OF, BABIP becomes pretty meaningless. Im saying Sweeney is currently that kind of hitter.

-Yeah, I just posted that, but my opinion is apparently "wrong" a significant portion of the time though, so take it as you will.

by PL78 on Jun 9, 2010 10:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Ichiro is incredibly fast

much, much faster than Sweeney. He’s also a complete outlier as a hitter, with otherworldly talent and a unique hitting style.

So, yes, he has a very high career BABIP of .358, with a number of seasons around or above .380. None of that is normal for a singles hitter. I have to admit that I’m speculating a bit here, since I don’t have a list in front of me of “singles hitters” and their BABIPS, but if Ichiro is your only evidence I don’t think that’s much to go on, either. Sweeney, on the other hand, had BABIPs of .327 and .330 in his two previous seasons with the A’s. His LD% is a little higher than last year, but not by an incredible amount. I don’t see any reason to think that he’s just going to BABIP .370 as a matter of course from here on out.

Looking at splits

Last year, Sweeney batted .319 post All-Star break. This year seems to be a continuation of that trend. I have no idea where to look to see his BABIP for the second half of last year, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was in the same range as this year.

As for singles hitters who had high batting averages, while it’s true there’s Ichiro Suzuki today, but in the past there was Wade Boggs, Pete Rose, et al. These guys did not hit for power and they weren’t especially fast.

lol, not many players can say they are breaking out when they have only 1 HR to their name.

This is also another reason why Sweeney needs to be hitting AFTER Raj and before Dale. Davis-Sweeney-Barton is am impeccable way to start a lineup. Sweeney with his Swingles > Dale wasting his out by bunting.

Not to beat on a dead horse

but you’re not comparing Sweeney to “singles hitters”, you’re comparing him to the all-time leader in hits, a first-ballot HOF’er, and Ichiro. And, FWIW, Boggs’s career BABIP was .344. Boggs hit way more doubles than Sweeney, and also drew ridiculous numbers of walks. Imagine combining the best attributes of Barton with the best attributes of Sweeney.

Sweeney’s BABIP in the 2nd half of 2009 was .350. Maybe he can keep BABIP’ing at a .370 clip, but I think the odds are strongly against it, and unfortunately a whole lot of Sweeney’s offensive value is based in those singles, since he doesn’t walk at a particularly high rate, or hit all that many doubles, or any HRs.

Just want to point out, that since sweeney doesn’t hit HRs and rarely walks, his entire batting average and OBP is dependent on his BABIP.

He is perfectly satisfied taking that outside pitch, even if off the plate, and calmly slapping it into shallow LF. So perhaps he really could sustain it.

by Billy Frijoles on Jun 9, 2010 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

If he can sustain a .370 BABIP

then I think we’re saying that Sweeney is a HOF talent, better than even Rod Carew or Tony Gwynn, neither of whom had a career BABIP of .370. Can anyone find a consistent .370 BABIP hitter who isn’t seen as a great hitter?

Seriously, turning 37% of your batted-balls-in-play into hits seems to me to be unbelievably hard to do over a long period of time. Rod Carew did it 6 times in 19 seasons. Tony Gwynn did it twice. And those guys were 1st-ballot HOF’ers, and acknowledged as 2 of the greatest singles hitters ever. I just don’t think it’s very likely that in 30 years people will be saying, “Well, I never saw Carew or Gwynn, but I saw Ryan Sweeney.”

So far as I can tell this (that is, swingles) is actually what the A’s need right now. The number of baserunners means plenty of LOB team-wise, but also – and nobody should forget this – more runs than we expected the A’s to be able to get on a near-consistent basis! Hell, at the beginning of the season, we figured 3 runs would be max most of the time.

When less is on the line, Sweeney needs to practice pulling the ball with strength. Just like Cust last night, who was clearly up to the plate ready to put it over the fence.

It’s basically just a rumor at this point.

The Seattle Mariners believe the New York Yankees will pursue starting pitcher Cliff Lee before the trade deadline.

"They want one of the [Yanks’ minor-league] catchers and [Eduardo] Nunez," a person familiar with Seattle’s thought process said of any potential deal with the Yankees.

Austin Romine is catching at Double-A Trenton, and Jesus Montero is catching for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. They are considered the top prospects in the organization, which also has young catchers Gary Sanchez and J.R. Murphy in addition to Francisco Cervelli, who is in the big leagues.

“thou” = 2nd person, essentially synonymous with “you”.

-eth is 3rd person ending for a verb. 2nd person ending is -est.

So it would be “thou dost” or “she doth”, but not “thou doth”.

Saint and I sat behind home plate last night for the first time

I scored some free tickets from my friend who works for Comcast Sports…..and it was friggin awesome! We had a blast and it was so cool to be that close to all of the players. I’d have to say that Kouz was by far the coolest and friendliest of all the players. Barton was getting a kick out of our heckilng the Angels and the HPU as well. Zooks was all business as was Sweeney and Ellis is just a great dude, period. Also saw Ziggy on the way out of the players tunnel and he signed my program and was extremely friendly.

I will have to score some of those tickets again because seeing the pitches come right down the middle is unreal. And Mazzaro was very nasty at times last night, and I especially enjoyed that Blevins-Aybar at bat….ridiculous!

but my buddy’s kid is graduating H.S. on Friday and we’re doing the all day celebration BBQ thing, and I have to help him set up in the morning before I park my ass on the couch with booze and the World Cup :D

I will make it there though, sooner or later.

1 for 10 against Saunders with 7 K's

Even though he is making better contact this time around, I am sure Geren looked at those figures and made that decison. I think he should bat against LHP as well if for the most part but there are a few he has trouble with and this appears to be the case here.

I really hope Geren isn't making decisions based on 10 plate appearances.

Career numbers against a certain pitcher (or team, or batter, or whatever) are almost always meaningless.

Interesting observation on WhiteSox the "hawk" tv announcer

while watching highlights of Detroit versus Sox. As that guy is such a homer as we all know – so his calls for the opposition are subdued, as if we are suppose to ignore them and they are of no importance. So they are showing a bunch of highlights with Ken, the Hawk, H. doing his thing….Put in on the board……yes, etc. for WhiteSox H.R….then they showed….

In what looked like to be a home run for the Tigers….the Hawks voice was non-commital, low key, hardly said anything, like ho hum it’s gonna be a home run for the Tigers, but Juan Pierre catches it….surprises Hawk, and he awkwardly switches gear to excitement over the great play for the WhiteSox. Well, I got to thinking about that experience as a fan, whether for Whitesox or Tigers, it really takes away from the whole experience…the one extreme one-sided homer attitude that Hawk takes….might as well just blackout or computer blur the opposition team and never mention they exist.
