If Brett Anderson is indeed out for the year, the A's may need to acquire an SP if they hope to remain in the AL West race. A likely trade acquisition would probably have to meet this criteria:
a.) Pitches for a team that is already out of the playoff race (less than a 5% chance, according to BP's daily updated playoff odds page).
b.) Healthy and effective
c.) A pending free agent (less costly in terms of prospects, because they provide only 4 months worth of return on the investment)
