A's Leave Yard Six Times, Twice Unintentionally, in 9-8 Win

Update (6/4, 3:30 PM): LHP Brett Anderson has been put on the 15-day DL with elbow tendinitis, C Landon Powell has been optioned down to AAA Sacramento, and LHP Cedrick Bowers and RHP Henry Rodríguez have been recalled from AAA Sacramento.

Brett Anderson made it through one inning before he ran into trouble in the 2nd. His fastball was only hitting 90-91mph, and surprise surprise, he didn't start the 3rd. The official word is "left elbow soreness". Lovely.

Fast forward...one at bat. Less, even. During the first at bat of the 3rd inning, Victor Martinez hit a foul ball to the right. Ryan Sweeney and Mark Ellis sprinted over to snag it. They didn't notice each other. Sweeney slid foot-first and Ellis tumbled over Ryan's sliding body, hitting him with a knee to the side of the head. Sweeney was taken out of the game for "dizziness", which likely means a concussion. Sigh.

And yet, the fireworks didn't end there. The A's offense cranked out 14 hits, and, unbelievably, four home runs. Kurt Suzuki had a monster day (ha) with two home runs over the left field wall, and Jack Cust and Kevin Kouzmanoff went back to back in the 8th with two solo shots.

You really can't expect much from the bullpen when you're forced to get 7 innings. Vin Mazzaro didn't pitch well, but in a rare sight, the offense did just enough to bail the pitching out.

The A's finish their road trip at 6-4, and they head home as technical winners. We'll have to wait and see what the prognosis is on Brett Anderson. Sigh. Again.

I was checking out Cust’s stats before the game and calculating his OPS and then it hit me “Kouzmanoff will probably swing at the first pitch” and my eyes connected with the screen just as the bat connected with the ball.

Well I was hoping for the best today against Wakefield and some how we won the game.
I watched it on Comcast xtra innings and left for work at the start of the ninth. This road trip turned out way better than I thought it would. It seems that we have several players on the roster that are actualy 3AAA+ at best but like in years past we know how to win. It appears that we may be able to compete for the Western Division title. Is there any bullpen help out there? We actually look pretty solid at each position, one more bona fide major leaguer would help a lot. I will be back in front of the boob tube tomorrow night for the series opener.

Whatever

The team weathered the storm without Anderson already, they’ll have to do it again. Losing him hurts, but I have become numb to the endless injuries now. As for Brett, it’s very concerning to have all these injuries so early in his career, with our (un)luck he’ll become the next Harden and we’ll see him pitch now and then over the life of his contract.

I’ll give a mulligan to the bullpen after this series, for whatever reason Fenway reduces our teams to children every time we play there.

I don't agree. I think there's very little depth there --

Mazzaro is an ok prospect but not a great one, there’s nada at AAA, I’d say that Figueroa/Capra/Hornbeck are total rolls of the dice, and Leon just had Tommy John surgery. Where’s the depth? And will Ynoa ever throw a baseball again?

And in any case, none of them can come close to what Anderson’s potential #1 starter value. The A’s are really looking shaky now for next year with Braden/Gio projected to be the best starters if Anderson’s out for an extended time. And if Anderson does turn out to be another Harden, I don’t see how the A’s can compete in 2011-2015.

False statement

A true statement would be that Cardenas hasn’t been good, thus far, this year in the minors. He’s still a great prospect and I’m not trading him for someone of Guthrie’s ilk.

I probably undervalue him

But I really like Cardenas, and the offense could definitely use him as an anchor on the infield for the next 6+ seasons.

I’m so nervous that one (or more) of Taylor/Carter/Cardenas is going to bust, so my vote is to hang on to all three in order not to lose the one that won’t bust. That made sense in my head but became very complicate to type, so my apologies.

I like Cardenas a lot too

I’d love to see a true “.300 hitter” type in the A’s everyday lineup. I’m assuming part of Cardenas’ struggles this season are due to his thumb. I still think he’s right up there with Carter and Taylor as the A’s best prospects (partly because he can play decent defense at 2B/3B).

But starting pitching is vital and Guthrie’s pretty good, so I think it’s a reasonable “arrrrrgh” scenario where it’s not dumb to say yes or no. The fact that Guthrie already has 3 full seasons behind him might be the deal buster; if he had, say, 4 seasons on his contract it’d be hard to say no.

I can definitely say I don’t want to trade Cardenas for him. Guthrie’s not terrible in any way, but he’s not particularly great either. Adrian, on the other hand, has a chance to be a great player, a potential cornerstone type player.

If there existed another package with which to land Guthrie then I’d be fine with it, depending on who’s involved.

If he can consistently post an ERA around 3.70 in Baltimore,

he’d probably have been posting around a 3.40 ERA in Oakland. Which would make him pretty much a legit #2 starter on the A’s right now.

Point is, he’s better than Gio or Cahill, probably better than Braden, and considerably more alive than Duchscherer or Anderson.

To me it depends what "a little of the future" means

Guys like Donaldson, or even Weeks (who I fear will be a bust due to injuries), or Corey Brown, might be worth moving in order to make the team stronger now, especially if the player added is here for more than one season.

Basically I’d make a Kouzmanoff-type trade even if it meant parting with a Cunningham type.

Whether in a starting role or a support role. Someone who’s extremely questionable to ever break with the team or who will never get a shot with the team can be traded no problem at any time. This could be the forerunner of a Patterson DFA though - with another infielder on board to play 2B, and with Gross, Rosales and Cust all able to play the outfield when Crisp gets back, Patterson becomes completely superfluous — particularly if Geren benches Rajai in favor of Gross, and then Rajai becomes the pinch runner du jour and back-up outfielder.

So when Sweeney’s head clears and Crisp returns next week, goodbye Eric Patterson and hello Sam Demel.

For a while, Fox was one of our few right-handed options at either LF or DH. With Crisp back, I could see a Gross/Rajai platoon in LF, with Rosales also getting ABs against LHP at either DH, LF, or SS. Plus the A’s have RHBs Ellis and Suzuki back now. So there is less need for Fox now, but he does still have more power potential than most of the A’s.

But Fox can play a more valuable position at catcher. This could let Landon be in the lineup more often, and still have a guy who can catch (poorly) late in games left. If necessary, he can also play LF (poorly).

Depends on what is meant by "fine"

Ballplayers with concussions, usually in football, play well afterward. The difficulty comes afterward with all sorts of physical problems. I recall reading an article about it - it didn’t affect Steve Young’s play, for example…but he was forced to retire because football players are far more subject to concussions than baseball players. Church’s concussion was particularly bad.

It is going to be hard enough to win games in Anderson’s place without having the second coming of Dana Eveland throwing batting practice up here and that is all it is.

Unclear on geography

From the Comicle: "With the Celtics facing the Lakers in Los Angeles in the opener of the NBA finals Thursday night, the crowd chanted “Beat L.A.” several times during the game."

The next time the Carolina Panthers are playing the Raiders, and the Red Sox are in town, let’s start a “Beat Carolina” chant. Or, since it would be more amusing, “Beat the Pants, Beat the Pants!” Since Carolina is roughly the same distance from Bawstun as LA is from us.

Asked if he'd even thrown a no-hitter before at any level, Braden said, "In Little League, I had a couple under my belt. And in the bullpen, I'm damn near perfect every day."

What would it take to get Jeremy Guthrie or Jake Westbrook?

either of these guys would be a solid pickup for us and probably wouldnt cost so much that we couldnt get a bat too. What do you think?

But our more immediate need is a bat. I’d rather have Luke Scott hitting for us, and John Halama or Brett Tomko in the rotation.

What the hell does Mazzaro have to do to get an out anyway.

He rakes AAA like it’s nobody’s business but he gets beat around in the majors.

Mazzaro has had one major problem from day 1

He gets ahead of hitters like today and then has no clue how to finish them off. Once ahead he throws it right over the plate. Fastball, off speed, no matter what it is, it gets tattooed relentlessly. He also has major meltdown issues which he has had from day 1.

Maybe they can figure it out but IMO, He should not be allowed to throw another pitch when out team is ahead in a game. He should be in AAA until he throws about 5 starts in a row without getting pasted.

It was looking at the speed of his four-seam fastball throughout his career. If the system was confusing if four-seam with his slower two-seam, that might account for the difference. The movement chart shows it to be the case.

Cust's homer was completely unimportant.

It must have occurred when the A’s were up or down by 10. Kidding. Ok, it took him 50 or so ABs to get his first. Just wondering if anyone remembers whether he had any homer droughts that long in his previous A’s seasons. He is streaky, but i am glad that he’s not a streaker.

Hi ho.

by danh on Jun 3, 2010 9:04 PM PDT reply actions

Cust is very streaky.

From July 21 to Aug 17 last year he went a little over 100 ABs with no HR. You can see it on Baseball Reference’s game logs page. Several other long droughts during the year, and in past years, too.

Cust is very streaky.

that they could like zap the offending tendon or whatever it is and tighten it up but alas no such luck. If it is the same as Ben Sheets then he has an excellent chance. He is too valuable to keep rehabbing and going out and re-injuring it.
