A's Leave Yard Six Times, Twice Unintentionally, in 9-8 Win
Update (6/4, 3:30 PM): LHP Brett Anderson has been put on the 15-day DL with elbow tendinitis, C Landon Powell has been optioned down to AAA Sacramento, and LHP Cedrick Bowers and RHP Henry Rodríguez have been recalled from AAA Sacramento.
Brett Anderson made it through one inning before he ran into trouble in the 2nd. His fastball was only hitting 90-91mph, and surprise surprise, he didn't start the 3rd. The official word is "left elbow soreness". Lovely.
Fast forward...one at bat. Less, even. During the first at bat of the 3rd inning, Victor Martinez hit a foul ball to the right. Ryan Sweeney and Mark Ellis sprinted over to snag it. They didn't notice each other. Sweeney slid foot-first and Ellis tumbled over Ryan's sliding body, hitting him with a knee to the side of the head. Sweeney was taken out of the game for "dizziness", which likely means a concussion. Sigh.
And yet, the fireworks didn't end there. The A's offense cranked out 14 hits, and, unbelievably, four home runs. Kurt Suzuki had a monster day (ha) with two home runs over the left field wall, and Jack Cust and Kevin Kouzmanoff went back to back in the 8th with two solo shots.
You really can't expect much from the bullpen when you're forced to get 7 innings. Vin Mazzaro didn't pitch well, but in a rare sight, the offense did just enough to bail the pitching out.
The A's finish their road trip at 6-4, and they head home as technical winners. We'll have to wait and see what the prognosis is on Brett Anderson. Sigh. Again.

I almost missed Kouz's
I was checking out Cust’s stats before the game and calculating his OPS and then it hit me “Kouzmanoff will probably swing at the first pitch” and my eyes connected with the screen just as the bat connected with the ball.

Road trip
Well I was hoping for the best today against Wakefield and some how we won the game.
I watched it on Comcast xtra innings and left for work at the start of the ninth. This road trip turned out way better than I thought it would. It seems that we have several players on the roster that are actualy 3AAA+ at best but like in years past we know how to win. It appears that we may be able to compete for the Western Division title. Is there any bullpen help out there? We actually look pretty solid at each position, one more bona fide major leaguer would help a lot. I will be back in front of the boob tube tomorrow night for the series opener.

I'd take the sweep if it meant Anderson and Sweeney end up A-OK
100% Athletics, 100% Baseball. 2009 Athletics, 40% Baseball.
Whatever
The team weathered the storm without Anderson already, they’ll have to do it again. Losing him hurts, but I have become numb to the endless injuries now. As for Brett, it’s very concerning to have all these injuries so early in his career, with our (un)luck he’ll become the next Harden and we’ll see him pitch now and then over the life of his contract.
I’ll give a mulligan to the bullpen after this series, for whatever reason Fenway reduces our teams to children every time we play there.
"Their batters are patient to the point that it's annoying." -Ryan Franklin
It's not even about this season anymore.
The Anderson injuries have a huge implication on the success of the current Beane rebuild. If Anderson turns out to be another Harden, there’s a good chance this rebuild will be completely for naught.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
Yep
We need Gio/Cahill/Mazarro to all take steps forward.
Oh and if our prospects would start to actually, y’know, hit it would be nice as well.
"Their batters are patient to the point that it's annoying." -Ryan Franklin
Nah, it can be overcome.
We have a lot of depth at that position. It would certainly be to the A’s great advantage if he stays healthy, but neither the financial commitment nor depth are reasons why it can’t be overcome.

I don't agree. I think there's very little depth there --
Mazzaro is an ok prospect but not a great one, there’s nada at AAA, I’d say that Figueroa/Capra/Hornbeck are total rolls of the dice, and Leon just had Tommy John surgery. Where’s the depth? And will Ynoa ever throw a baseball again?

Yeah, I'm not seeing the depth either...
And in any case, none of them can come close to what Anderson’s potential #1 starter value. The A’s are really looking shaky now for next year with Braden/Gio projected to be the best starters if Anderson’s out for an extended time. And if Anderson does turn out to be another Harden, I don’t see how the A’s can compete in 2011-2015.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."

I probably undervalue him
But I really like Cardenas, and the offense could definitely use him as an anchor on the infield for the next 6+ seasons.
I’m so nervous that one (or more) of Taylor/Carter/Cardenas is going to bust, so my vote is to hang on to all three in order not to lose the one that won’t bust. That made sense in my head but became very complicate to type, so my apologies.

I like Cardenas a lot too
I’d love to see a true “.300 hitter” type in the A’s everyday lineup. I’m assuming part of Cardenas’ struggles this season are due to his thumb. I still think he’s right up there with Carter and Taylor as the A’s best prospects (partly because he can play decent defense at 2B/3B).
But starting pitching is vital and Guthrie’s pretty good, so I think it’s a reasonable “arrrrrgh” scenario where it’s not dumb to say yes or no. The fact that Guthrie already has 3 full seasons behind him might be the deal buster; if he had, say, 4 seasons on his contract it’d be hard to say no.

If he can consistently post an ERA around 3.70 in Baltimore,
he’d probably have been posting around a 3.40 ERA in Oakland. Which would make him pretty much a legit #2 starter on the A’s right now.

To me it depends what "a little of the future" means
Guys like Donaldson, or even Weeks (who I fear will be a bust due to injuries), or Corey Brown, might be worth moving in order to make the team stronger now, especially if the player added is here for more than one season.
Basically I’d make a Kouzmanoff-type trade even if it meant parting with a Cunningham type.

And it should go without saying that any trade that improves the team now and in the future is always a good thing.
Ask me about my squirrel.
My point being, trading Weeks makes us "worse for the future"
but I might trade him in order to make the team better now — if the player added wasn’t just a rental.

Well
If anyone we get back is going to be with us and good over the next 3 years or so, I don’t see that as really hurting our future. That’s sort of our window anyway, so something like that fits in the “good for us now and the future” category.

They were built for the ooottttther park we play in... at the same time... with all that foul territory...
and… um… err…. ah… uh… what was the question again?
Ask me about my squirrel.
I'm guessing the pitching staff gets re-worked a bit for this coming homestand...
judging by the fact that the bullpen has pitched about 15 innings in the past three games with many guys going in back-to-back games and Anderson going down.
I’m thinking:
- Anderson to the DL
- Mazzaro to the rotation
- Bowers back up
- HRod back up
- Maybe Sam Demel comes up too, even though he’s not on the 40-man?
I'm never gonna do it without the fez on!
Didn't Adam Heether take Duchscherer's spot?
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
Yes
Heether was added to the 40-Man roster today. Chavez and Buck are possibilities to move to the 60-Day DL if a spot is needed.
Crisp is expected to go on a rehab assignment first, so he may not be ready on Tuesday.
i forgot about buck
is he still rehabbing the oblique? that’s been forever.
Yeah, you're right
This could be the forerunner of a Patterson DFA though - with another infielder on board to play 2B, and with Gross, Rosales and Cust all able to play the outfield when Crisp gets back, Patterson becomes completely superfluous — particularly if Geren benches Rajai in favor of Gross, and then Rajai becomes the pinch runner du jour and back-up outfielder.
So when Sweeney’s head clears and Crisp returns next week, goodbye Eric Patterson and hello Sam Demel.
I'm hoping man
The emergence of Gross obviates him in my mind. But Patterson made it this far.

25-Man Roster
But someone has to go to make room on the 25-Man Roster when Crisp is activated – Patterson, Fox, and Powell are the leading candidates. I assume Rosales, Gross, and Cust are safe. Unless there is another injury or another pitcher is sent down.

More RH Options Now
For a while, Fox was one of our few right-handed options at either LF or DH. With Crisp back, I could see a Gross/Rajai platoon in LF, with Rosales also getting ABs against LHP at either DH, LF, or SS. Plus the A’s have RHBs Ellis and Suzuki back now. So there is less need for Fox now, but he does still have more power potential than most of the A’s.
I would rather see Patterson as an all-baseman
and Powell getting the time Fox has.

They'll have to gank someone off the 25 man as well
if they’re DLing Anderson, and possibly calling up two relievers and activating Crisp.
Even if Landon goes back to AAA, someone else also has to go. Patterson DFA is still possible.
"I generally avoid temptation unless I can't resist it" ~ Mae West
Why not a Fox DFA?
I guess the fact that he can catch helps us give Suzuki days off at DH, but other than that, Patterson has been a much more valuable contributor than him.
"PECOTA can pretty much kiss my ass."-Nico
They both suck equally
But Fox can play a more valuable position at catcher. This could let Landon be in the lineup more often, and still have a guy who can catch (poorly) late in games left. If necessary, he can also play LF (poorly).

Depends on what is meant by "fine"
Ballplayers with concussions, usually in football, play well afterward. The difficulty comes afterward with all sorts of physical problems. I recall reading an article about it - it didn’t affect Steve Young’s play, for example…but he was forced to retire because football players are far more subject to concussions than baseball players. Church’s concussion was particularly bad.
In other news, there's a street called Line Drive here.

I thought this when listening to the move
I finally felt like the A’s were likely to win – nice save, baily

I hope that if Anderson is gonna be out for the year then either make Mazarro a starter again, or to a lesser degree, Tyson Ross, because keeping both of them in the bullpen is a waste when either of them could be gaining invaluable development time starting in AAA or as the 5th starter in Oakland. Mazzaro was getting smacked around and I just felt bad for him being the sacrificial lamb and it possibly ruining his confidence……credit to him for lasting even 3 innings and getting some additional offense and great defensive plays to help him out. I just can’t believe how snake bit this team is….I mean what the hell does it take to have one season where the team isn’t the fucking MASH unit?
I’m thankful for the win but man I’m just sick to my stomach with the Anderson news and hope to BeJesus that Sweeney doesn’t start telling everyone,—————— “I’m Batman!”… Go A’s!
"By the end of the year, I'll have Dallas throwing right-handed'' -Ben Sheets

Mazzaro has had one major problem from day 1
He gets ahead of hitters like today and then has no clue how to finish them off. Once ahead he throws it right over the plate. Fastball, off speed, no matter what it is, it gets tattooed relentlessly. He also has major meltdown issues which he has had from day 1.
Maybe they can figure it out but IMO, He should not be allowed to throw another pitch when out team is ahead in a game. He should be in AAA until he throws about 5 starts in a row without getting pasted.

the A’s most needed a CF and Rios isn’t really one. Plus he has a horrific contract. But when you look at the A’s team and what they lack — a RH batter with some pop — I say bring it on!

That velocity chart was separated by pitch type.
It was looking at the speed of his four-seam fastball throughout his career. If the system was confusing if four-seam with his slower two-seam, that might account for the difference. The movement chart shows it to be the case.

It must have occurred when the A’s were up or down by 10. Kidding. Ok, it took him 50 or so ABs to get his first. Just wondering if anyone remembers whether he had any homer droughts that long in his previous A’s seasons. He is streaky, but i am glad that he’s not a streaker.

From July 21 to Aug 17 last year he went a little over 100 ABs with no HR. You can see it on Baseball Reference’s game logs page. Several other long droughts during the year, and in past years, too.

But I’m pretty sure he’s EITing.
Ask me about my squirrel.
Didn't Beane say something like
We traded Ethier because we think Travis is just as good or can be better?
I loved ethier, i used to drive to midland and watch him
I was so pissed when they traded him but i guess beane figured ethier and buck were similar players but he was way wrong
You don't think maybe the Dodgers insisted on Ethier?

Wish we could some how get the kid from the marlins
Michael stanton 20 homeruns and 50 rbi’s and 300 avg but carter did the same
Josh Johnson for the marlins had same kind of injury like anderson
hopefully it doesnt end with surgery but hes turned out pretty damn good at a young age

One of my favorite FJMs
was the breakdown of the article praising Schilling for preventing unearned runs to score
"The ego, the super-ego, and the Ed" - dannycakes
How can they be unearned runs if they never score?
Ask me about my squirrel.
this I will look up and link to
its here about halfway down. DO a search for Schilling. I think its the second schilling on the page the article is called “Just say whatever you want and hope nobody notices:Tom singer edition”
"The ego, the super-ego, and the Ed" - dannycakes
Fun article
Seems pretty obvious that a streak like that would go to someone with a good defense. But, if an unearned runner doesn’t score, is he really an unearned run? (looks around) Is my philosophical assholeliness showing?
Ask me about my squirrel.
Can you cover it up?

Of course he (and they) meant that.

So true.
He sucked when he pitched in Arlington, but he was entertaining before the game — when he was stretching in the outfield, he was literally dancing around. We decided he must have been listening to his iPod, because the dancing didn’t really go with the music being playing the ballpark.

Mazzaro will get the Angels if he pitches for Anderson
I predict: 3.2 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO, with Ross relieving him
Hope you are kidding
NO!!!!!!
Looks like Anderson did not want to come out but Kurt told him he was going to tell the idiot who runs the team that he was hurt.
Sadly, Brett will be done for the year I would think. If it’s what they think it is, have the surgery and come back next year.

You would think with modern day medicine
that they could like zap the offending tendon or whatever it is and tighten it up but alas no such luck. If it is the same as Ben Sheets then he has an excellent chance. He is too valuable to keep rehabbing and going out and re-injuring it.
If you read in the article the praise he was getting from Inge and Leyland. But we know how good he is.
Lets just hope it’s not as serious as it looks.
