6/26-28 Down on the Farm (AKA Around the Minors)
We had some interesting stuff the last couple days: 3 position players pitching, Adrian Cardenas tearing the cover off the ball, a few promotions (and demotions), more errors, and a lot of intriguing box scores.

Never been to Midland, don't exactly want to, and by the looks of it, Cardenas wants out
Tearing the cover off the ball upon his demotion. Good to see Green back at SS, so long as he keeps hitting. Rough go of things for guys like FDLS & Capra, who had been doing well.
Still don’t know why we wasted Demel on Conner Jackson, as McPherson could have replaced Fox’s bat, which would have made room at Sacto for Cardenas when he’s deemed ready to return. I know, Jackson didn’t “replace” Fox, but nonetheless…
Lots of wild, extra-innings encounters & position players on the mound. Speaking of relievers, what the deal with Henry Rodriguez? He ok? Haven’t heard from him in a while.

The Demel for Jackson move made very little sense.

Long relief prospects aren’t that big of a deal and Jackson was a pretty good hitter for Arizona when he was healthy. It made sense to me.

Absolutely
I’d rather have Jackson’s bat than a reliever who had yet to help the us. I really like Demel, but I also thought we bought pretty low on Jackson.
What bat? He's hitting .243 with 1 HR.
Jackson at his best is much worse than Ryan Sweeney, a legit .300 hitter with OF versatility who lacks power. Somewhere along the line you have to get power from your OF positions, and we were already sending 3 (4? 5?) punchless OF out there.
Demel, meanwhile, was red-hot in AAA and looking like he’s be a good ML reliever. Our thin bullpen currently sucks, so this is especially troublesome. In other words, we traded from a weakness (bullpen) and acquired more of something (slap-hitting OF) of which we already have too many.

Also, buying low on CJ doesn't make it a good trade, either.
Jackson’s not a terrible guy to have, maybe on the LHP side of a platoon. The only thing that would make his acquisition worthwhile is if we traded from something of which we had even more of than we had averagish OF, like, say AAAA utility IF (see: Wimberly, Tolleson, Sogard). Trouble is, those are in much less demand than a prospect who profiles as a solid bullpen arm, which is why we should have kept Demel.

Jackson at his best is a much better offensive player than Sweeney

Doubtful, but even worse is that Jackson hasn't been at his "best" in years ...
… while Sweeney has been solid since the start of 2009.
At this point, Jackson:Sweeney = Chavez:Cust.

That analogy is terrible
It’s true that Jackson hasn’t been himself since getting sick last season, but from ‘06-’08 he was good and very consistent. Comparing him to Chavez is ridiculous.
That analogy is terrible
What is the correlating factor between those sets of players? Power? Durability? Popularity?

Jackson is hitting .243 in a week and a half
Demel just gave up 3 runs today. I’m not going to say Sam is a terrible reliever because of that, but I’m also not going to judge Jackson off of 12 games. Conor Jackson is a year older than Sam Demel and our bullpen is pretty set. Sure it can be rough sometimes, but our hitting is the most glaring need and no one can deny that Jackson’s talent helps our team.

Demel is 27? Are you sure?

Hey Moran. There are only 31 days maximum in a month.

If we could play 4 OF's
It would make sense to me as well.

My issue
Is not that Jackson is a bad player. It’s that he does not bring anything new to the roster. You get a fielder with good speed, fielding and limited offensive ability. All that sounds great until you figure out we have several of those already. I don’t have an issue with losing Demel if it was something we actually needed. Of course there is a chance Coco will break at anytime and with Sweeney knee acting up perhaps he will keep us from having to use Cust or Rosales in the OF. This team needs more offense out of all outfielders not named Coco and Jackson will not help.
"-i never said half the things i said." --Yogi Berra
I guess it depends on how you feel about Jackson's recovery
If he can return to being the player he was before he got sick then he would easily be the best hitting outfielder on the team and it wouldn’t really be close.
I get that the glaring weakness on the team is a lack of power and Jackson doesn’t really help that but if you take a broader view you could say the A’s need to prove offensively and if Jackson will likely hit better than anyone else we could play in LF then he counts as in improvement. A lot of people say we already have players who can hit singles and take walks but you could also say we have plenty of relievers with promising arms who have difficulties throwing strikes.
It would be nice if every trade was designed to perfectly supplement the team’s needs but sometimes you just have to look at it from a value perspective. A healthy Conor Jackson is a more valuable baseball player to have than Sam Demel, so for me that makes the trade a win.
Much rather have Jackson.

Thanks. Hopefully he's back soon...

I'll be there for less than 24 hours tomorrow
Won’t be venturing far from the hotel/ballpark complex but from what I hear the Midland/Odessa area is pretty crappy.

Stockton Ports game was on MLB tv today.
Green hit a HR, Parker looked like Doolittle with power. Hunter looked a mess. Hornbeck wasnt all that good.

Poor Hunter
I’m still holding out hope, but it hasn’t looked pretty.
Yeah...
He threw 6 straight balls when he came into the game. FB was 93-94 but has no control. His delivery actually didnt look as herky-jerky as it did last year.

Really?! Awesome.
I wish the Comcast/Fox channels that run the local games would also run the Minor league games. I’d watch Sac/Stockton/Midland/etc if those games were on.

We could call this Around the Minors if that’s what everyone wants, but it’s been Minor Athletics for two years. I do believe we should be consistent with something though.

huh?
You do realize that Ynoa is only 18, right? If he was entering the first player draft, he would be a 1st rounder. All along the plan was to work him slowly. When he enters Single A ball next yr, he will be right on schedule.

I figured hero66 was kidding ...
… but maybe asyouwish wasn’t.
Not necessarily on 16-year-olds, but spending on big time foreign FA’s is probably, next to paying over slot in the draft, is Oakland’s best bet at acquiring top-shelf talent. Even in a rough start, Ynoa still missed enough bats to K 4 over 3 IP….

And thank God for that. I have no idea whose naked pictures Jamey Wright possesses, but they must be awfully good to justify such a long career as a terrible baseball player.

Does anyone else have the feeling that Carter is going to go on a tear?
I think his OPS will be around .900 by August 1.
He does the same thing every year - it takes him a while to get used to the level, then he dominates.
It’d be the same next year – he’ll almost certainly struggle in his first year in the Majors.
