Michael Taylor has been on fire the last week or two
WTF GEREN?!?!?!
by robbo650 on Jun 26, 2010 11:51 AM PDT via mobile reply actions
Taylor is batting .297/.388/.392 in June, so we’re still waiting for the power. Still, this is welcomed improvement.

Again, calling out whoever said that Mortensen is not a starter
He’s on fire right now!
And AJ-KJ is looking real good so far…

"Mortensen is not a major league quality starting pitcher"
There, I said it. After all this greatness he has shown at AAA.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
I'm not saying he is now
He could be though. I just don’t agree with converting him to reliever and bringing him up to replace Ross, which someone was advocating

He seems to me like a 5th start/swingman on an average team.
He gets a lot of groundballs. He should never really embarrass himself, but all things considered, ideally, he shouldn’t have a permanent spot in your team’s rotation.
If you think Billy Beane is a bad GM, I hate you and find you stupid.
Not sure what to make of Green right now.
Soar shoulder, has been butchering SS when he’s on the field, but he sure is swinging the bat.
Has anyone seen him play in person?
I’d be interested to see what his range and arm are looking like.
Not too concerned about the errors, unless they’re because he is lacking a particular skill in order to be a successful SS

He hasn't played in the field for weeks
He has a sore right shoulder, so he’s been DHing (all his numbers above are as a DH).
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
That's probably rust, then

Yea, I'm not freaking out about the errors just yet...
but it sure would be nice if he would stop making them.
im going tomorrow
While he is swinging the bat well in first order stats unfortunately when you adjust for park and luck he still isn’t improving over a .760 park and luck neutral ops.

Yeah, I remember you mentioning this a couple weeks back
Do you propose leaving him in Stockton though, or moving him up to Midland?
Obviously, his stats on paper seem to warrant a promotion, but the concern would be that a regression would make his numbers look pretty bad in AA…

I don't know
Honestly I would just put him on the DL till his shoulder gets better and he can play the field.
Then I would let him play in Stockton till hes hitting the shit out of the ball.

Well he's been back in the field for the last couple of games
As for when to promote him I’m still torn on when to start thinking that his torrid June might mean he has kind of “figured out” A+ ball.
I guess what I’m wondering is how long you would expect him to hit the shit out of the ball before promoting him? Until he has made up for his mediocre first two months and made his overall line look dominant or just until he has likely established a new level of performance?
I would like to see a 800 plus park and luck neutral OPS with a <2:1 K to BB rate before promotion.

He's getting there, I guess
Personally, I would be happy if he gets one and improves on the other, then promote him…

Time start thinking about Tolleson at shortstop?
After 44 games at Sacramento he’s got a .311/.406/.486 line with 26/20 K/BB ratio. Offensively it looks like he might be able to walk almost as much as Pennington but with less strike-outs and slightly more power. He is a few months older than Pennington so he’s not really a prospect but he is just hitting his peak.
I don’t know too much about Tolleson’s defense while UZR seems to think the Pennington is about average at SS. Honestly I don’t know that Tolleson will hit that much better than Pennington in the AL so the decision probably should come down to defense at short. But if Tolleson had a chance to be averagish there it might be worth giving him an extended look at some point this season.
Yes
UZR does not think of Pennington as about average. The sample size is too small but it thinks he is below average for his career (which is only about one defensive season). The Pennington is good at D meme just hasn’t been born out by the stats.
I would support demoting Pennington and playing Rosales / Tolleson, especially since Tolleson’s stats aren’t the by product of a lot of regressable luck or park. His MLE at this point is better than what Pennington is producing.

Pennington’s bat says this would be a horrific idea. Even if he’s average/below average defensively (and there is not enough experience/data to make that call yet), his hitting makes him worthy of the everyday SS role. Demoting a guy in the middle of an 862 (and rising) OPS month is just lunacy and will never happen. True his May (and .224 BABIP) was awful, but he’s looking more and more of a 750 OPS guy. At SS, you take that no matter what a washup prospect is doing at AAA.
-Yeah, I just posted that, but my opinion is apparently "wrong" a significant portion of the time though, so take it as you will.
