"We Don't Have A Strasburg" (An A's Fan Lament)
Since they won today, this won't seem so desperate. But it is what it is. I understand the impact on the draft of horrible seasons. The A's haven't had one of those in over a decade. We are on the wheel of mediocrity. It's tough to get off. But here it is:
We don't have a Strasburg, or even a Price.
No Evan Longoria-- though he'd sure be nice.
No Jason Heyward, no Harper, Bryce.
Not even an Upton, and if you want my advice.
You can't get it done, with lots of "OKs"
They'll hit 260 or so, at only half the pay.
Show flashes of brilliance, 'til the arm gets sore.
And if it's real brilliance, well then out the door.
We're the most mediocre bunch, that anyone's seen.
All thanks to a lousy home, and a genius named Beane.
Our GM's a rock star, to be played by Brad Pitt.
But why can't he find someone who can hit??
Another game in the 6th, ask my bud "how we farin'?"
His reply is quick, that $%#&$#* Bob Geren!!
"He mishandles the switch, screws up the pen
And he hasn't pitched out in I don't know when."
There were issues with Art, and Ken, we are fans.
But please for this job, he can't really be the BEST MAN??
Our owner seems to be a Wolff, in the clothes of a sheep.
Of commitment to our town, there's nary a peep.
We've mastered the mediocre, firmed up the fair.
Tarped up the 3rd deck, is anyone still there?
No Howard or Pujols, Utley or Braun.
And if we ever had one, well they'd soon be movin' on.
No we don't have a Strasburg, and none on the way.
If you've got God-given talent, you're not an Oakland A.
We don't have a Strasburg, not tomorrow, not today.
Perhaps we will down the Valley-- does anyone know the way??

strausburg, price, upton and harper = 1st pick overall
and longoria was 3rd pick overall
booo billy that he keeps us in contention every year and we can’t get the top pick in the draft year after year.
seriously, our 10th pick has been the highest pick since zito.
how the hell do u get those guys with the 10th pick exactly?
I'm questioning that "keeps us in contention every year" part.
Pitching and defense wins pennants, but offense sells tickets.
I'd take Brett Anderson over David Price every single day of the week

Yes. I don't think Anderson is any more prone to injury than Price (he just happens to be hurt at the moment)
Anderson is two years younger and he’s already better than Price. And I really don’t think we’ve seen really good Anderson yet.

Brett Anderson is a goddamn superstar in the making. It would be more clear by now if he wasnt currently injured.

Yeah, it rhymes and shit, but this is one of the most illogical posts I've seen since STRICKOUTS!!1
Yeah, no Strasburg, no Harper–the A’s also haven’t finished in last place for four of the last five years like the Nationals. As gillyball said, most of the players you mentioned were the 1st overall picks. Would you stop “lamenting” if Oakland was the worst team in baseball? Doubt it. They only way to draft these surefire studs is to be terrible, year-in year-out like the Rays and the Nationals have been.
And if you look at the standings, you’d see that Upton and the D’Backs and Strasburg and the Nats are both in last place, and the A’s in all their mediocrity are better than both of them.
If you think Billy Beane is a bad GM, I hate you and find you stupid.
This post sucks
Are you sure you are an A’s fan? On behalf of our AN community…goodbye, go root for the Nationals.

Too harsh.
I’ve seen a hell of a lot of complaining lately from almost everyone in the AN community…and this at least is a relatively creative form of complaining, and certainly more entertaining than most of the crap that’s being spewed around here.

WHat do you mean, no one has ever seen him?
If that were true, how would we know about his beautiful eyes???
from a direct spanish pronunciation
it would be “Ee-noah” (as the “I” sounds like “ee” in spanish, or so I once learned in high school).
the only thing that came to mind for rhyming, and possible poetic injection was “Rocky Balboa”.

I don't think Beane set out to have no high-ceiling talent on the team. They did have
Chavez, Crosby, Haren and Harden. It’s just that none were healthy. He also did sign Ynoa and make a pretty good run at Chapman. The plan was reasonable…but the results….well…

ooh… I got one…
(to the tune of “Question” by The Moody Blues)
Why do we never get an answer, when we’re knocking at the door…
with a thousand million questions, about why you let them score
because with seven relief pitchers, you never pick the one we need
in a weakened West division, will you ever grow the seed?
It’s not the way that you gesture… when you bring that pitcher in…
it’s more the way, you really mean it, when you say that he can win…
and when you stop and think about it, you won’t believe it’s true
that just a few short years ago, we were frontrunners and cool
…I’m looking for… someone to fire Bob
I’m looking for… an end to that finger-sniffing slob
and if you could see… what it’s done to me…
to lose the team I knew…
and safely lead us to…
the playoffs we once knew…
to learn as we grow old,
the slegnA have no souls…

Brett Anderson and Cahill
over Strasburg anyday. Give those two guys some real run support and they’d win 20+ games every year!
The greenmachine
Let's not go crazy now.
Strasburg may very well have his arm fall off, but the guy strikes out twice as many hitters as Anderson. What he’s doing now is probably unsustainable, but he’s really, really, really awesome.

well he did mention TWO pitchers
so he is technically right, BA+TC are better than any singular pitcher, true.
-Yeah, I just posted that, but my opinion is apparently "wrong" a significant portion of the time though, so take it as you will.
The premise, apparently, is...
…that the higher the draft pick, the better the resulting team. Yet, teams like the Pirates (yes, I’m playing the Pirate card) consistently draft higher than us yet consistently have even crappier teams that us. Why is that?
Oh, I know… It’s because higher draft positions… while certainly helpful… aren’t 100% of the equation. You still have to draft and develop well. You still have to keep said good players instead of trading them away as soon as they command a salary larger than minimum. Stuff like that. A well-run team can survive nicely with lesser picks.
Pitching and defense wins pennants, but offense sells tickets.
You mean like the Twins?
I know Mauer was the #1 pick, but that was 9 years ago already. They’ve been really good pretty much every year since.

The A's don't have top young talents? O RLY?
BA 2009 Top 15
1. Matt Wieters, c, Orioles
2. David Price, lhp, Rays
3. Colby Rasmus, of, Cardinals
4. Tommy Hanson, rhp, Braves
5. Jason Heyward, of, Braves
6. Travis Snider, of, Blue Jays
7. Brett Anderson, lhp, Athletics
8. Cameron Maybin, of, Marlins
9. Madison Bumgarner, lhp, Giants
10. Neftali Feliz, rhp, Rangers
11. Trevor Cahill, rhp, Athletics
12. Pedro Alvarez, 3b, Pirates
13. Mike Moustakas, 3b, Royals
14. Buster Posey, c, Giants
15. Dexter Fowler, of, Rockies
If Anderson and/or Cahill stay in AAA last year, they make top 10 again in 2010 with guys like Heyward.
And yeah, we don’t have a Strasburg, but there were two near-equally horrible teams in ‘08 that didn’t get Strasburg. The Nats got that #1 pick that got them Strasburg by ONE game. Dustin Ackley and Donovan Tate are not generational talents.
With the exception of your ridiculous generational phenom talents (ex. Strasburg, Harper, Justin Upton, Mark Prior, although he wasn’t picked #1) that only crop up rarely, there’s generally not much separating the top 10-15. Considering the crapshoot that is prospects, really not much.

I think Mazzaro would also be very high
He is still showing good potential- has just been thrown into the fire due to injury.
Well it was a sink/swim situation with all 3 of them at different points....
First in 2009….Anderson swam like Michael Phelps, Cahill sunk, but we stuck by him anyway…we threw Mazzarro out there after a bit, and after treading water for a couple minutes, he sunk too…..
Then in 2010….Anderson already guaranteed, Cahill couldn’t outswim Gio, but when the injuries came, we threw him out there anyway and he swam this time. Mazzarro’s sunk again
Bye, oaktoon

As a longtime A's fan and season ticket holder
I am grateful that the A’s don’t often qualify for the first or one of the first draft picks. That would make for some pretty sucky baseball.

This post calls for an illustration.
Unfortunately I have no artistic talent at all.
The wheel of mediocrity is a giant ferris wheel, positioned high above a vast sea of shit. Somewhere in the distance, across miles of suck, is the island of playoffs. The A’s are riding in the ferris wheel, and crazy caps dude thinks they should dive out and swim through the sea of suck to try to make it to the promised land.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
Kind of cute
No the A’s haven’t been good for a while. If they’d have their two best pitchers injury free, they’d probably be a few games above .500. But the hitting. Ugh. Plus they’ve traded away some solid offensive talent and gotten not a whole lot in return.
I’d replace Beane with Brad Pitt for real. Pitt can’t act. Beane can’t find talent anymore. They should do a switch. It couldn’t be much worse than what we’re seeing right now in both Hollywood and Oakland.
I don't buy the Beane can't find talent anymore....
He has plucked a lot of talent off in trades at a very high ratio. I think our problems are more with injuries throughout the organization. Sean Doolittle should be in the majors now, but he can’t stay healthy. Eric Chavez threw his freakin arm off, or he’d still be there. Our top two pitchers, as noted earlier, are both hurt. Taylor’s been hurt, Weeks can’t stay healthy….even Ynoa was basically hurt for 2 years before he got on the field.
What the A’s really need to do is take the $9 mill that’s coming off the books from Chavvy’s contract, and spend it ALL on trainers and such. That should be our #1 priority. I don’t understand why this hasn’t happened yet. After the past 3 seasons, we should be spending ALL our extra money on staying healthy. This stuff just drives me nuts!
Beane traded Mark Mulder, who went onto pitch like 14 innings
for about 30 players who ranged from really awesome to meh. That trade was simply incredible.
-Yeah, I just posted that, but my opinion is apparently "wrong" a significant portion of the time though, so take it as you will.

I count ten.
(a) = currently with team
(b) = currently in farm system
(c) = on team for a while, then released or traded for PTBNL/cash
1. Mark Mulder → Dan Haren (2), Kiko Calero (c), Daric Barton (a)
2. Dan Haren, Connor Robertson → Brett Anderson (a), Chris Carter (b), Carlos Gonzalez (3), Greg Smith (3), Aaron Cunningham (4), Dana Eveland (c)
3. Carlos Gonzalez, Greg Smith, Huston Street → Matt Holliday (5)
4. Aaron Cunningham, Scott Hairston → Kevin Kouzmanoff (a), Eric Sogard (b)
5. Matt Holliday → Brett Wallace (6), Clayton Mortensen (b), Shane Peterson (b)
6. Brett Wallace → Michael Taylor (b)
Out: Mark Mulder, Connor Robertson, Huston Street, Scott Hairston.
In: Daric Barton, Brett Anderson, Kevin Kouzmanoff; Kiko Calero, Dana Eveland; Chris Carter, Michael Taylor, Eric Sogard, Clay Mortensen, Shane Peterson.
Did I miss any?
