A's Acquire Conor Jackson from Diamondbacks for Sam Demel

Apparently the A's have sent Sam Demel to the Diamondbacks in exchange for Conor Jackson and cash.

Jackson is 28 and has hit .238/.326/.331 this year in 42 games for Arizona.  According to Cots, Jackson is making $3.1 Million this season in his second year of arbitration.

In 22 games for Triple-A Sacramento, Demel was 2-0 with 6 saves, a 1.28 ERA, and 1.08 WHIP.  Many at AN expected him to be called up in place of Tyson Ross who should be in Sacramento starting every 5th day.

I'm kinda scratching my head at this one.

while I was putting together my fan post on this trade this one got published

so I’m deleting my post but adding it here as a comment. Hopefully the links will work here without re-doing them.

The A’s just traded for Diamondbacks OF Conor Jackson. Minor league pitcher Sam Demel goes to Arizona in exchange.

Here’s the announcement from MLB.com

I seem to remember that Beane had tried to trade for Jackson (and Carlos Quentin) some years back, in exchange for Eric Byrnes (at least a year or two before Byrnes was actually traded to the Rockies).

Here’s a link to Jackson’s stats over the past three years. It should be noted that he missed most of 2009. At the moment his line is.238/.326/.331, with an OPS of .657. Not great, but considering he hardly played last season perhaps there’s hope that he can produce as he did in 2008.

In any event I’m sure this is not the last of the trades that the A’s will be making

He has to go.

1- Landon Powell has to stay up since Jake Fox has gone the way of the DFA

2- The A’s can’t go with an 11 man pitching staff with their rotation.

3- Conor Jackson would pretty much take Patterson’s role on the team, which is getting the vast majority of his PAs against LHP (Jackson has a pretty firm platoon split).

I wonder if he'll make it to Chicago today

Might be good since he’s familiar with NL pitching

by TBRMKane on Jun 15, 2010 9:41 AM PDT reply actions

Now we know why Demel wasn't brought up

A lot of folks at AN LOVED Conor Jackson a couple, three years ago. Obviously, replacing someone like Eric Patterson with someone like Conor Jackson is a huge step in the right direction…and it should be noted that Jackson’s line at Baseball Cube had him at a .188 average this year after 99 AB, which means that in his past 52 AB, he’s hit .346. This bodes well for someone coming back from rustiness and injury issues. On the other hand, his homer totals are 15, 15, 13 for this three major league seasons.

He’s not Paul Konerko, to be sure, and he’s not going to give you that power bat the A’s need in the middle of the line-up. The thing to keep in mind is that he bats right. So in terms of playing time, he at the very least takes Jake Fox’s at bats, and if he’s going good, Rajai Davis’s and/or Jack Cust’s (especially given that Cust seems to have lost his power).

This isn’t a game changer but once you add a healthy Crisp to the line-up, it could be bigger than one thinks.

The loss of Demel is really sad, though, because the bullpen hasn’t been lights out, and Devine is still a bit away from returning. It’s especially damaging if Bowers can’t move himself up in the bullpen rotation.

by richwol1 on Jun 15, 2010 9:42 AM PDT reply actions

Demel is a big loss

Demel is a minor league reliever. He's not a big loss.

If there’s one thing the A’s have proven, time and again, that they can do it’s develop relievers. Demel may turn out to be pretty good, but I don’t care. The A’s already have a few pretty good relievers and I have no doubt they’ll make a few more when necessary.

Interesting move

It’s always a good start to move a reliever for a position player although I did really like Demel and though he had closer potential. It really comes down to how healthy Conor Jackson is, as he was a pretty good left fielder for a few years until he was wrecked by Valley Fever. It really took a toll on him in 2009 and it looks like he is still working to recover his mojo. It’s not the type of move that really blows anyone away but it seems like a decent way to utilize the A’s relief pitching depth.

It's a logical conclusion

If you think Wuertz is going to turn into a pumpkin, or if you talk about how all relievers have up and down years succeeding one another. From that perspective, Wuertz’s fall from grace was the norm.

However, I don’t think that’s what’s going on here. When Wuertz has been on, as danmerqury hints, he’s been as good as he was last year. He’s just not consistent. And that comes from being rusty and not quite yet being on his game. I’ve noticed that he is not yet able to put back to back appearances together without the second one being a question mark. That’s another sign of rustines and the fact that he’s not quite on his game.

So I’m not going to be snarky and start talking about danmerqury’s “facts” versus someone else’s opinion, because the idea that Wuertz’s 2009 was an outlier has merit. I happen to think it’s wrong and I also think that in a month, Wuertz will be pitching like he did last year.

The funniest part about everything is that THIS is the outlier year

Last year, while a career year, was much more in line with what he did as a Cub.

He was a really, really good pitcher there and Campbell (who, by the way, thinks Vitters is some ungodly combination of Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth, and Superman) is just bitter that the Cubs gave him away.

I like the move.

In his last year Healthy years Jackson has put up 809, 836, 823 OPS. He has a career OBP of 360.

Over his last 10 games: .303/.378/.455/.833 10-33 with 2 doubles, 1 HR, 1 K, 4 BB. So he seems to be doing well recently.

Interesting contrast vs. 2008

In 2008 at around this time, the A’s had just swept the Giants and were 38-31, 3 games back, getting many of our hopes up. In early July, they traded Harden and Blanton for minor leaguers, and ended up with their now-standard losing record.

So, it’s interesting that now, at 32-33, 4 games back, they’re acquiring major leaguers for minor leaguers, implying an effort to “win now.”

by oblique on Jun 15, 2010 9:55 AM PDT reply actions

Exactly.

As a casual fan, the fact that our hitting prospects aren’t hitting causes me to panic, and to worry that the team will just cut bait and re-rebuild, which would suck horribly.

This move is a strong indicator that management still sees this as the end of the rebuilding cycle, and next year (and maybe even this year) as a competitive year.

It’s nice.

This is what I was saying with my Cubs post. No way Derrek Lee gets them anyone but a low level minor leaguer if they dont throw in tons of cash.

Jackson mashes lefties

Should be a platoon with Gabe Gross for the rest of the year. Means only 2 spots left for Rajai, Sweeney, Crisp and Patterson. Sweeney and Crisp are the clear favorites of those 4. Rajai would make a great late game pinch runner since he has trouble getting himself on base…

By a lot. Vice versa is also true. It’s really a clear opportunity. Might not be a straight platoon since they will work Jackson in a little more at the expense of other guys, but I think it will at least be a semi-platoon. To do otherwise would be silly.

As I posted above, he’s better hitter than that against righties. From 2006-2008, playing full-time, he had a .790 OPS against righties. The last year and a half have been messed up by his Valley Fever condition, but he should be over that now.

The park effects are a factor, but he had an OPS+ over 100 each year from 2006-2008.

But then he also doesn’t hit a ton of home runs – so I’m not HUGELY worried by his home park. The ball really carries in Arizona – if HRs were a big, big part of his game I’d be very wary. As it is he seems to be a gap power kinda guy, so he should translate.

Platoon Splits

Those career splits are really hurt by his poor year in 2009 and slow start this year. In 2007 and 2008, when Jackson was healthy, he had an OPS over .780 against RHP.

He’s been a little slow in his recovery from Valley Fever, but I think he can get back to his 2006-2008 level, when he was a consistent .290/.370/.450 player.

by Amit on Jun 15, 2010 11:06 AM PDT up reply actions

I hope you're right but....That breakdown is not very favorable....

Especially since additionally he deal with the change in leagues too.

So far he has been slow to recover from his absence. I wonder too how much irregular ABs will hurt him too if the A’s are trying to balance when Coco comes back.

by OnlybuyBeaneJerseys on Jun 15, 2010 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I was hoping that the A's would trade for Xavier Nady...

but I guess Jackson is a pretty similar player, right down to the Cal roots.

I agree with elcroata above…the home/road splits are a bit discouraging. Hopefully, he’ll be used judiciously in a platoon role to maximize his value.

Overall, I’m just hoping this turns out a bit better than the Scott Hairston experiment. Demel seems like a pretty good arm, but he wasn’t on the 40-man so he might not have been able to help the big league team this year anyways…plus, you just never know with relievers if they’ll be able to sustain performances for long periods of time.

Hopefully, Crisp + Jackson will give the team a needed jolt when they’ve been scuffling a bit.

the hope that Demel could be used in a good package to bring in someone with more value than Jackson is why I’m sorta “meh” on this trade.

David DeJesus is thought to be on the trading block. He’s posted a line of .314/.392/.479 this year (is signed for 4.7m this year with a club option at 6m in 2011). What do you guys think it would take to get him? Or would he be someone worth even considering?

I hear ya

I guess I’m just not that big on Mazzaro. And I have a BIG problem with this lack of accountability and desire to be the best he can. Per Mychael Urban…

…was a huge disappointment after he dominated in his first two starts last season. He didn’t make a single adjustment when the league made its initial adjustments to him, and when asked to assess his year as a whole (4-9, 5.32 ERA), he flashed delusion: "I thought I did pretty well."

and this one in reference to his pitching performance on 6/9 against the Angels…

Ditto his self-congratulatory quote after Tuesday’s game in reference to his zero walks: "I’m impressed with myself for that."

Uh, no Vin. Dallas Braden wasn’t impressed with himself for pitching a perfect game for cryin’ out loud. You make it sound like some feat was accomplished that you didn’t walk anyone. I want more confidence and higher self expectations out of a starting pitcher. I understand that he had some shoulder issues last year which could have affected his numbers, but he needs to take some responsibility. At least make it seem like you’re setting higher expectations for yourself.

Sorry for my little rant on VM…just been bothering me ever since I read those quotes. If another club saw a lot of value in him I wouldn’t be upset if we packaged him to get a quality return – but, I understand your POV too regarding our thinning pitching staff.

If we do trade Suzuki this offseason I definitely agree, we’ll need Donaldson to at least hold the fort down till Ortiz and/or Stassi are ready. But if the FO knows we’re gonna be holding onto Suzuki at least through 2011, then I would trade Donaldson while his value is high and he’s got youth on his side.

by bakerbeachboy on Jun 15, 2010 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I read his quote about being impressed with himself about not walking anyone

but I just thought it was kind of cute, not really meant in a self-congratulatory way — more like he was surprised and happy that he could pull that off. Also, I would take everything and anything that Urban says with a grain of salt. He tends to put a lot of spin on things.

by whiteshoes40 on Jun 15, 2010 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it's bothering me cus I've seen the video of Vin

after his poor pitching performances. The dude seems to not really take any accountability when he doesn’t do well. I know, sss…it just seemed ‘off’ from what you normally get from athletes that expect a lot of themselves.

SSS though, and I should probably give him the benefit of the doubt.

Perhaps that's just his approach to the game.

It’s worked rather well for him so far.

I'm not too worried about it....

In fact I think it’s better than the Gio approach which is scream at yourself for ever little mistake.

Also, has there been a corresponding roster move?

Fox was DFA’d, but Kurt is coming back to the 25-man, meaning we’ve got 25 men on the 25-man and 39 on the 40-man. Gonna need to option someone. Carson, most likely.

I’d rather it be Patterson just like everyone else, but yeah, it’ll probably be Carson.

In this case I don't mind so much

With Davis likely to be in center and Jackson in right there is really no role for Carson on this team. I agree that it’s time to cut the cord with Patterson but I think it can wait until Crisp comes back.

by OkayJay81 on Jun 15, 2010 10:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Either way, yeah, it has to be Carson or Patterson to go.

i'd like to Jackson lead off

he’s batting .283 this year in 53 at-bats leading off, with 7 walks and a .367 OBP.

Meh.

Those aren’t great leadoff numbers. Besides, you can’t split the numbers like that. Huge small sample size warning.

Fuckin' A right he is. I would be too.

I’m pretty sure he can still use his Blackberry in Johannesburg, and I don’t think being the GM of a baseball team requires you to be in the office at your cubicle from 9-5 every day.

Yeah I'm not so sure.

I mean the nature of the job probably means you only need a line of communication back to base to be able to do it……but leaving the country for a month to go and watch a sporting event during the middle of the season?

Is there any way we could find out if he’s there or not? Anyone in Oakland feel like knocking on the Coli’s door and asking to see the GM?

He doesn't like to watch the A's play because

he doesn’t want the emotional attachment that happens when you watch players make great plays or have great games. I don’t think being out of the country is changing his patterns much.

FIFA has said they're not banning them.

but apparently the BBC has said they’re going to filter them out of their broadcasts and allow viewers to switch to the filtered audio feed if they want

SIG SPACE AVAILABLE FOR SPONSORSHIP. INQUIRE WITHIN.

by mikev on Jun 15, 2010 10:48 AM PDT up reply actions

They've done studies on them already.

Apparently their frequency is such that the only way to truly filter them out is to turn off the effects mic. They cover a lot of the ranges the commentator’s voices do – and the human brain is so good that it’d start picking up the noise pollution (cos that’s all it is) after about 10 minutes or so if you filtered them out.

Basically they need banning ‘cos they’re ridiculous and are ruining the World Cup (not that it needs much help).
