Jeez do you think Cardenas is pissed at his demotion?!
Oh and Brown appears to be a AA player. =(
"You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."
Cardenas took his sweet time to get to Midland
and Corey Brown continues to destroy Double A.
I think both really do need to be in Sacramento. Even with their struggles, they’re still our top hitting prospects and we need hitters. Retreading them in AA does not seem that great an idea, especially with Cardenas, who struggles at each new level before dominating it.
Now Fox is done
anyone think we will give Dallas McPherson a call? Im sure he could spot Kouz, Barton & Cust at 1B/3B/DH. He plays 2B too doesnt he?
-Yeah, I just posted that, but my opinion is apparently "wrong" a significant portion of the time though, so take it as you will.
If only we still had Huston Street.
Then we could go out and acquire every Austin and Antonio we can find (though the Antonios would have to achieve sainthood).
And El Paso Jones
Okay, that’s not a real guy, but it should be.

Patterson can’t play the infield and we should designate him anyway to make room for McPherson on the 25-man roster.

Wimberly’s overall line of .277/.364/.321 just isn’t that good. A hitter who only slugs .321 in AAA has very little chance of succeeding in the majors.
by Amit on Jun 14, 2010 10:15 AM PDT
I think people need to get off the Wimberly train. He’s not a better option than Rosales or Ellis.

BUT HE DOES BACKFLIPS AND ROCKS THE STIRRUPSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HILLIS...where are you???
Justin Marks update
The overall line is still a bit nasty at 2-6 with a 5.37 ERA but the peripherals are starting to come around with a 61/26 K/BB ratio over 62 innings. Still walking too many people but he seems to be making progress. Would expect more from a “polished” college pitcher in A ball but some guys take a while to get used to the pro game.
Hes been pretty good recently.
His last 7 starts: 39.3 IP, 3 HR, 10 BB, 41 K, 3.21 ERA
"Carter's 25-game hitting streak isn't any normal streak. He's 46 for 97 (.474 average) during the run, adding 16 walks and compiling 81 total bases in the process. I'm out of superlatives for what he's doing." - Kevin Goldstein
Grant Green has really turned it around.
Good to see it.
In case anyone’s wondering, Chris Carter’s slash numbers are .239/.341/.487, for an OPS of .828.

Thank you
I meant to post this but it slipped my mind. Even during his recent struggles, his OPS hasn’t dropped beneath .800. Taylor, on the other hand..
Taylor's hasn't dipped below .800 either
Of course, it’d have to be above .800 at some point to dip below it.

Can we send Krol to Stockton already?
He’s a man playing in a boys’ league.
"PECOTA can pretty much kiss my ass."-Nico
No need to rush him
He’s only 19 and he’s not striking a lot of guys out. He can keep working in Kane County for a while.
and he just turned 19 in May. If I am correct.
Obviously I would love to see him rush through the minors and debut Sept 2011…but I am fine with him staying in Kane County for now.
If Cardenas had 2 BBs on the 12th,
how is his season line after the 13th .600/.571/.700?

Looks like Mortensen is doing well right now.
I think this is his 2nd good game in a row (?)….is he going to reclaim prospect status?
Geren talks up Mortensen
as if he is a future all star in the making. I really find him un-inspiring.
whats mcpherson's deal?
awesome numbers from ‘01-’05. up and down the majors with “ok” production. pretty awesome ’08 season in AAA with florida. 42 homers in 400+ ABs. im assuming he was injured through the ’09 season and the start of 2010? this guy has serious pop. i need to head out to raley field more often now. mortenson with another solid outing. great june for him.
still utterly clueless why henry rodriguez cant stay in oakland, yet tyson ross continues to give up runs. swap these guys PLEASE.
He's talented, but is really injury-prone.
Actually, hasn’t he been injured this year too?

Was back in Sac’s lineup tonight (thank god) after being hit by a pitch a couple days ago.
Went 2-4 with a 2B, 2 runs, 2 Ks. Slowly creeping toward the .250 batting average.
Good to hear
He has been picking it up of late.

Not much longer in AAA for Chris, I think
Another 30 days of improving production and he’s gone to the Show. For good.
No chance.

Demel traded to Arizona Diamondbacks this morning, pitching against Red Sox Wednesday night
My son-in-law, Sam Demel, has been traded to Arizona. That’s all I know. Flying to Boston today to join Diamondbacks. He will be activated tomorrow. There should be some sort of trade announcement soon. Good luck to Oakland. Oakland has the best pitching coaches in baseball. The last 3 years in the Oakland system has been a joy.
Ughhhh
I just saw this. Demel was one of our most promising relief arms. Even if he had no immediate future in Oakland, why in the world would we trade him away for Conor Jackson? I would’ve rather packaged him with some other players for a stronger return.
sigh…

That was quite a return
to get for Kotsay at that point in his career. Hopefully Devine will be back around the ASB.

New face in Stockton
Second baseman Gernaldo Castillo made his debut in Stockton a few days ago after spending the last few years in the Dominican with a little time in the AZL last summer. He turns 21 next month and I don’t really know much about him other than he appears to be pretty light listed at 5’11" 145 lbs. and at the lower leagues he always walked more than he struck out so lets see if he can keep that going after this big jump in competition.
Wait, wait, wait
A Dominican player walked enough to have more BBs than Ks?
Last of the Ninth - Photography
Did it all three seasons he played in the Dominican Summer League
But he also has 0 homeruns and a handful of doubles over those same seasons so he seems to be even weaker than Corey Wimberley.
Wow, Michael Madesn, havent heard that name in a while...
remember early 08 when we thought he’d be in the rotation by now?
-Yeah, I just posted that, but my opinion is apparently "wrong" a significant portion of the time though, so take it as you will.
whats bad about our farm
is that jack cust is STILL leading the farm in walks, after all this time. ugh
-Yeah, I just posted that, but my opinion is apparently "wrong" a significant portion of the time though, so take it as you will.
and out of our 850 OPS guys
out of the six of them, only Tolleson and Donaldson are under 26.
But another is Matt Watson! Remember him? He was a pretty highly regarded prospect for us back in 04-05.
-Yeah, I just posted that, but my opinion is apparently "wrong" a significant portion of the time though, so take it as you will.
After the game on the 15th
Carter joins the over .850 OPS club but Donaldson leaves it.

When looking at prospects...
I wouldn’t be as obsessed about walks. I mean, yeah, you like to see decent ratios. But really, we need guys who can make the bat connect with the baseball. Thats an area that Oakland has lacked. Walks go to great hitters when no one wants to throw them strikes.
That doesn't even seem close to correct
Good awareness of the strike zone is clearly a skill that is very helpful and varies among prospects. Acting like walks only happen when pitchers are afraid of good hitters sounds crazy to me.
Late comment that nobody will ever see
Sam Demel is traded to D-backs now, and had a 1-2-3 debut against RSox at Fenway. A good trade for both teams, but A’s may miss him later. Sam was under the radar, and better than most people noticed, because relievers don’t get a lot of attention.
Baseball Prospectus has a page that translates current performance into MLB peak production for every minor league pitcher. Hard to find on the BP site, but there. For the Pacific Coast League, Baseball Prospectus ranked Sam Demel as the second best pitcher in the entire league, starters and relievers together. Behind only Jhoulis Chacin. Nice job, Sam.
He's still likely to be an injury risk going forward
But good for him.
