Wow.
Thorough, awesome, and entertaining too. Your third Excel bar graph (with the identical post hot/post cold bars) rocks.
How did you possibly sort through that much data? I haven’t yet cracked open the Retrosheet vault yet, though I’d like to be able to.

Thanks
I ran the scripts over the retrosheet data and stored results in a DB and then made SQL queries on it. I only involved Excel in the end, to get the charts and formatted tables.
For now, my program can only “understand” the hitting part. When I catch some more time, I will expand it to include base-running, counts, match-ups and similar. I will probably have to restructure the DB somewhat to allow for more complex queries.
I've created the Retrosheet DB but haven't done any queries with it yet
Hopefully, I can get to it over this summer. Maybe I could even create a tutorial with it. But it’s so much work. And I can tell the amount of time that went into this fanpost. Thank you so much and a million recs.

There is a DB that can be downloaded from their site, right?
Probably should have looked at that, too. But being able to “understand” and parse play by play data and create my own DB accordingly seemed very inviting to me. As I have rather clear ideas what I am looking for, I can extract exactly the data I need.
Further down the road I would love to link it with something like Pitch F/X data. There are so many interesting researches that can be done and so little time :) Perhaps some of AN people could get together on certain projects.
That would be awesome, actually.

I followed a Colin Wyers article about downloading Retrosheet
As of now I have the PitchFx, Retrosheet, and Baseball Almanac databases in MySQL. I went through a series of FPs at BtBS about the PitchFx database. I’ve made a few queries with it. I’ve done a lot with the BA one (I did a FP here with it a while back). Retrosheet I’m yet to touch.
I also bought the book Baseball Hacks by Joe Adler and I’ve heard it’s really a great resource. I tried a bit of it but it’s a ton of material.

Also, you got your wife to draw Johnny Five holding a four-leaf clover hitting dingers over the fence
but you couldn’t produce the promised cat with superpowers? For shame.

I wanted to,
but being illustrator herself, she is pretty adamant about not copying anybody’s work. Something with moral values, I didn’t quite get it…
Yeah, perhaps I should start having it in my signature
One of the ways I keep getting the drawings is by telling her that one never knows where potential customers are :)
This looks great
but have work to do, I will check it out later

You should have done it last time you said that.
Then the post would be green already.

Awesome work
Particularly the bit about teammates hitting during a player’s hot streak, which is not data I’ve seen before (though the result is exactly what I’d have anticipated).
Arthur Dent: You know, it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space, that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young.
Ford Prefect: Why, what did she tell you?
Arthur Dent: I don't know, I didn't listen!
Awesome post.
I trust someone give it a shout-out and link in the various SBN stat-blogs.
