Open Thread: Game 51 - A's at Detroit

Greetings from the Alta Bates ER, after I celebrated the A's move into 1st place last night by jumping onto a pile of friends, only to land hard on the concrete because I have no friends.

Dallas Braden gets the ball today against Max Scherzererererer, called up today to make the start after Armando Galarraga was pressed into relief duty on Friday. The man Galarraga relieved, Dontrelle Willis, was DFA to make room for Scherzererererer, who was once a very bright prospect for the Diamondbacks but who has struggled in the big leagues so far.

With Justin Verlander going tomorrow, if the A's intend to win this series they might want to grab this one. Kurt Suzuki has the day off, as Braden throws today to the perfect catcher for him -- Landon Powell.

Sox have a bye. This should mean A’s wont have to face Lester or Buchholtz, who have been their two best pitchers this year.

every manager has made “a few bonehead moves” — certainly in the eyes of his team’s fans. I’ve been deeply critical of Geren at times over his managing career, but this year he’s done a very good job with the exception of the bunting.

I thought she looked good

Her delivery is strong, and the RBI she got was a legitimate hit — I don’t think there’s any doubt that she deserves to be competing at this level; not a gimmick. She is really tiny, but there are a few other players on the team who are fairly short, so it wasn’t quite as dramatic when they all lined up together as you might expect. She seems to have a lot of mental toughness and is very cheerful in a way which will be familiar to anyone who’s watched Japanese TV serials which often involve a plucky young woman struggling to fulfill her dreams. She came back out after her press conference and signed autographs for half an hour, but only for kids.

I did see Max Scherzer pitch against the Giants last season. His fastball was consistently in the high 90’s. However, he walked quite a few batters, and his pitch count got too high for him to go very deep in the game. It will be interesting to see how he does today.
