Open Thread: Game 51 - A's at Detroit
Greetings from the Alta Bates ER, after I celebrated the A's move into 1st place last night by jumping onto a pile of friends, only to land hard on the concrete because I have no friends.
Dallas Braden gets the ball today against Max Scherzererererer, called up today to make the start after Armando Galarraga was pressed into relief duty on Friday. The man Galarraga relieved, Dontrelle Willis, was DFA to make room for Scherzererererer, who was once a very bright prospect for the Diamondbacks but who has struggled in the big leagues so far.
With Justin Verlander going tomorrow, if the A's intend to win this series they might want to grab this one. Kurt Suzuki has the day off, as Braden throws today to the perfect catcher for him -- Landon Powell.

Just as a look ahead....
Sox have a bye. This should mean A’s wont have to face Lester or Buchholtz, who have been their two best pitchers this year.
Shhhhhhh -- I'm going for sympathy here.

all you need is some bat blood, eye of newt, and a powerful personal deity.
Of course, a lock of Scherzer’s hair wouldn’t hurt, either!

Why cant Geren give me nothing to complain about at least ONE TIME???

I don’t want Kouzmanoff batting fourth, but you want Powell to bat fourth? He has a .643 OPS against right-handed pitching.

And 1/3 of the way through a season,
every manager has made “a few bonehead moves” — certainly in the eyes of his team’s fans. I’ve been deeply critical of Geren at times over his managing career, but this year he’s done a very good job with the exception of the bunting.

When coco comes back it is looking more likely Patterson will be gone. 0 starts lately.
They won't send someone down who's out of options
for Crisp, knowing that Crisp could be back on the DL in a few days.

If they waive/DFA him, they get a 10 day window.
Nobody would claim him, so that would be a week and a half for Crisp to try and not get broken again. If he does they just pull Patterson back and he’s back on the 25 man roster.

Patterson could going through waivers easily right now since most teams will not take a chance on him.

I thought she looked good
Her delivery is strong, and the RBI she got was a legitimate hit — I don’t think there’s any doubt that she deserves to be competing at this level; not a gimmick. She is really tiny, but there are a few other players on the team who are fairly short, so it wasn’t quite as dramatic when they all lined up together as you might expect. She seems to have a lot of mental toughness and is very cheerful in a way which will be familiar to anyone who’s watched Japanese TV serials which often involve a plucky young woman struggling to fulfill her dreams. She came back out after her press conference and signed autographs for half an hour, but only for kids.

I’m just starting my summer NRAFness.
I did see Max Scherzer pitch against the Giants last season. His fastball was consistently in the high 90’s. However, he walked quite a few batters, and his pitch count got too high for him to go very deep in the game. It will be interesting to see how he does today.

No because there's no such thing as a strike in cricket.

What about when they refuse to play
and hold out for English Breakfast tea during the 2pm breaks?

Is it true that in cricket there's a "longstop"?
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
Technically, but they're never used in professional cricket.
Basically it’s a guy that stands behind the wicket keeper because the team has no confidence in him catching the ball.

oh my god this ump is throwing the game for the Tigers.
IF THE BALL IS THROWN THE BALL IN THE EXACT SAME PLACE TWICE, MAKE THE SAME CALL, DIPSHIT.

Well, you arent supposed to swing at balls outside of the strike zone
-The president of the "Sign Elijah Dukes" fan club.
I was thinking Ellis's pitch he looked at for the K
when you know the ump is doing that, you just have to swing.

Here's my call
We score this run, we win this game.
SCORE RUNS......
Wuertz was scratched from a minor league game on Wednesday, but bounced back quickly on Thursday, throwing mostly fastballs and sliders, although he did mix in three sliders. -Rotoworld

Here's my other call
We don’t score this run, we still might win this game.
Oh, we'll win. Scherzer won't last 7.
It’s the getting there that grates sometimes.

Sigh
at least his pitch count is decently high where it doesnt look he will make it into the 7th.
Dallas needs to throw up more zeros though.
-The president of the "Sign Elijah Dukes" fan club.
The only way to get this guy is swing at the first pitch
or early in the count.
Taking pitches is leaving it in the hands of the umpire and the pitcher.
Make adjustments which they are not doing for the most part.
I thought those Ellis strikes were a joke
Our umpiring in this league sucks, the national league sumbitches.
Don't take any shit, Dallas!
Channel your granny!
