5/26 around the minors
Great night in the system, as all but Kane County pick up a win - and Ian Krol threw a great game for KC, only to earn a ND. Stockton absolutely upended San Jose. Shawn Haviland and Anthony Capra also turned in a couple of great games - especially nice to see from these two. Nothing else to report, really, except that John "Is Your Mama a" Halama threw a pretty good game for Sacto. Hey, he's a better insurance policy than Lenny DiNardo. Right?

Baily's batting .400, should prob go up to AAA again, but there's no room.
Lansford should be in AAA though for sure.
Krol deserves more mainstream recognition
Sometimes guys get the Internet buzzing with lesser peformances.
Kevin Goldstein was at the KC game
Siad he was going to do a writeup on Krol and the other pitcher. In fact I think its up at Baseball Prospectus now….
Yup, it is
Very complimentary about Krol, but he doesn’t see much ceiling, fourth starter at best. It’s really typical scout mentality, though. If you are good at everything at 19, it means you can’t get much better than you already are.
Wha?
Normally I’m a fan of Goldstein, but seriously, WTF? Oh no…instead of CC Sabathia, he might only be…Andy Pettitte! sob
I’ve never heard this “3/4 arm slot guys only have a midrotation ceiling” thing before. Is there actual evidence of this somewhere that anyone knows of?
Regarding the arm slot, I think it has to do with platoon splits
Pitchers who throw from lower arm slots tend to have large platoon splits (i.e. Ziegler as an extreme example). The theory is that if a guy is getting close to sidearm it will be harder to be more than a mid-rotation starter because other teams will load up on opposite handed hitters.
Hm
I can buy that for true sidearmers like Ziegler, but I can think of a number of guys who threw from 3/4 and who didn’t have particularly pronounced platoon splits – Greg Maddux, Roy Halladay…I would still prefer to see some research on the subject, if there is any.

Not much ceiling?
Did KG take into account the magic amulets that the A’s give to their left-handed pitching prospects that adds 4 mph on to their fastball?
This is a completely inaccurate account of what KG said
You also ignore the method by which scouts try to define the ceiling of a pitching prospect.
The monster at the end of this blog.
Completely inaccurate?
OK, I made two factual statements about what Goldstein said. First, I said he was very complimentary about Krol; he was. Second, I said he doesn’t see much ceiling with him, not past fourth starter anyway; that’s what he said word by word.
My other comments were not an attempt to further describe his sentiments about Krol, but an attempt to describe my own sentiments about the way pitching prospects are often analyzed by talent evaluators.
Fair enough
I should have said you quoted KG fairly but your own sentiments are completely inaccurate. Talent evaluators love to dream on 19 year olds. The problem is Krol doesn’t appear to have much physical projection left in him, therefore it’s tough to expect his stuff to get better. He’ll need to refine what he has to break that 4th SP ceiling KG tagged on him.
The monster at the end of this blog.
Does "doesn't appear to have much physical projection" just mean "he's short" in scoutspeak?
There have certainly been a lot of short LHs who throw hard. I’m suddenly curious about how old they were when their velocity showed up or peaked.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
Krol is listed at 6'1" 180 lbs
He’s not short but he’s considered physically mature. So he’s not expected to grow another couple inches or naturally fill out another 15-20 lbs. Odds are he’s as is physically. That means it’s doubtful he’ll pick up any more fastball.
Age is only a partial component in increasing velocity. Brett Anderson didn’t pick up an extra 3-4 MPH on his fastball because of his birthday… the added velocity came when he got in better shape.
The monster at the end of this blog.
See, this is a flaw in scouting to some extent
Because size is only a part of what allows a pitcher to throw hard (saying nothing of control, which has nothing to do with it). Pedro is a tiny little man. Randy Johnson is a gigantic man. Jon Rauch, bigger than Johnson, throws around 90-91.
If Krol, or any other pitcher, works out properly and adds strength in the right way – and I’d be shocked if almost any 19 year old in his first year of pro ball has been doing this sort of thing for very long – they will change what people see as their “ceiling.”

I never said they don't love to dream on all 19 y/o
But they are too obsessed with morphological arguments at the expense of performance arguments when it comes to young pitchers.
Shane Keough hit a home run?
Well, that doesn’t happen often.

Krol
Very impressive results as a 19 year old in low A. Seems like he has a good K/BB ratio. At least one good draft choice.
Arnold Leon just had TJ Surgery...
According to Slusser.

and it became a Face Off.
Obviously we get the crappy end of the deal.
Wouldn't the crappy end of the deal be having to watch that movie?

on the good injury front
SuSlu also says Taylor’s close to coming back and Ynoa threw a good inning on Tuesday. Can’t figure out WHERE he threw this good inning, though.
Sounds like she might have updated this not too long ago
Michael Ynoa fared well in his one inning of work on Tuesday. His fastball hit 92-93 mph, he allowed one hit and threw 20 pitches. (Sorry – that happened at extended spring training, which I’d mentioned yesterday, but not all of you saw that, I’m sure.)

Jemile Weeks 3 weeks away, and Taylor could play as soon as Saturday.

Any info on Capra?
I’m probably just over-reacting due to all the injuries A’s prospects have had this year but when I saw that Capra only went five innings and threw something like 76 pitches before getting pulled on what looks to be a pretty successful start I immediately thought “oh crap another injury.” Probably nothing but I was wondering if anybody heard anything about it.
