Missed Tolleson hitting two homers for the Cats ;-)
Anderson was definitely rusty but he got through things okay. He was on about a 60 pitch limit so if he does make his next start with the A’s I would expect the bullpen to get some work.

It's hard to get excited about anything.
But at least BA is close to returning.
"I thought it was going in," Warriors center Chris Hunter said. "It looked like the invisible man tipped it away at the last second."
Hooray for Stephen Parker and Carter!
On the flip side, I feel like it’s a minor miracle every time I see Grant Green drawing a walk.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
yeah
and an XBH is god sent

Its a shame Stassi got hurt too
He was on pace for about 300 K’s this year.

Anyone have any word on how Carter looks in the outfield?
I imagine it’s not especially pretty or he would be getting more time out there.
I think the main reason is because Sacramento brought in Brett Harper to play 1B, at least for the time being
He used to be in the Giants organization and I saw him with Fresno a couple times. He’s strictly a 1B/DH type so they’re using Carter in RF for now and at least for tonight, Powell was the DH while Donaldson caught.
Not sure if they’ll be keeping Harper around once Taylor’s off the DL, especially if McPherson returns any time soon as well.

Great to see Cardenas
Doing well in his last two games. Has always been a slow starter, so hopefully he’s picking it up. Would like to see him starting at 2nd in 2011.
Also glad they’re playing Carter in the OF. I really think if he worked at it he could be decent out there. He’s got the tools.

I like Cardenas
But I really like Ellis coming back next year…

plus 1.
I think the A’s will pick up his option.

It’ll depend on how the rest of the season goes, I think. He’s owed more than he’s worth.

Last year, in 105 games, Ellis was worth almost as much as he'll make next year
And that’s with an uncharacteristically low UZR number.
All Ellis has to do is be decent and he’ll be worth $6 million.

Cardenas
No reason to rush him with Ellis and Rosales around. If Beane decides to trade Kouz during the offseason, then that means Cardenas will be penciled in to play 3B next season (or Rosales).
by Colorado Fan on May 25, 2010 7:57 AM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, Cardenas is only 22!
He doesn’t turn 23 until after the season, so it’s not like there’s a need to rush him.

My main concern with Ellis
Is whether he’ll play in 100+ games next year. The only way I don’t think he will be worth his option is if injury keeps him out of too many games. We’ll see how the rest of this season goes, but if Cardenas looks ready at the end of the year I might be inclined to let Ellis go rather than deal with the constant DL trips.
Keep Rosales too then
or find another Rosales-type. Tolleson might work.
Ellis is so low-profile, and is an injury risk. There’s no way in hell he gets more than $3MM next year, when you consider ORLANDO HUDSON only got $5MM from the Twins after a 3 WAR season the year before.
-The president of the "Sign Elijah Dukes" fan club.
Ellis could very well be worth around 2.5-3 WAR
this season.
The fact that Hudson lost his starting job for the last month and a half of the season cost him money.
His bat fell apart at the end of the season, and I’m sure clubs saw that as a product of age regression…

You're not wrong
But PL is right. It might be wiser to decline the option and bring him back at a 1 + team option deal.

Or he spurns the A's because he's pissed about declining the option
With a guy like Ellis, you’re much better “overpaying” >$2 Mil then risking losing him for such a small price.

Seirously, if a player is that much of a crybaby about a team making a smart business decision
I hope he fails at baseball and life.

Dude, really?
That’s not my point.
I’m saying if his option is declined and he still puts up numbers that would justify the contract, then most likely he’ll go somewhere that he can find that deal.
Furthermore, is it really worth a savings of around $2 Mil to make that risk?
If the answer is yes, then you take it. If it’s no and losing Ellis would be irreplaceable, then you overpay a bit…

Ellis is not irreplaceable
I would not be surprised to see his defense decline and injuries kill him. And with Cardenas and even Weeks in the minors and Rosales at the majors I think the A"s could find 1.5 WAR from 2nd.
The A’s basically encountered this same situation with Cust. They thought they had options if Cust left and they ended up signing him for less.

tough choice
Valdez or Sogard. Sogard has the better track record, but he’s already been moved off his position by Cardenas. Valdez has had a nice season, but supported by unsustainable BABIP. Parker has a weird line (tons of ground balls), and .201 isoP at Stockton really isn’t anything to be excited by. However, Sogard has flat out sucked so far, so Valdez passing him seems fair at the least. We’ll see what the A’s do. Interesting decision for them now that Cardenas is back at 2B.
by AgitationStation on May 25, 2010 1:45 AM PDT up reply actions
Parker could take the 1B job in Midland
Since Kleen is old and not hitting. But then again, A’s probably want to give him every chance to play third base as long as it seems to be viable option. Valdez could be moved to 2B now that Weeks is injured for who knows how long, he played there before. I’m honestly much higher on Parker than Valdez – level lower but three years younger, much healthier looking BB/K ratio, and he’s been getting better as year has progressed while Valdez has slumped in May.
I’ve noticed that batted ball data from Stockton can be strange – nothing seems to be scored a line drive there. Carter had a bump from like 7% LD to 23% when he moved to Midland. I wonder if Parker’s LD% is artificially low right now too.
I wouldn't hold anybody back for Sogard
Sogard just isn’t really good. He’s got a good eye, but not much else. His XBH numbers are dropping (and will continue to do so against better pitching/better defense).

Green took another walk
I think that’s his fifth in the last week. 3 were in one game, but hopefully it’s the start of something good. After walks come power. Way too early to write off his talent (awful as the start of his pro career has been).
Also, Cardenas, iirc, that’s the fourth game in a row he’s played 2B. Fully support that decision. I don’t know what’s happened to Sogard. I pegged him as the sleeper of the system coming into the year, and chalked up a big portion of his weak isoP last year as San Antonio (actually thought it was 50/50 he would outhit Cardenas this season), but he’s been abysmal. Swing harder brah.
Another great game for Baisley. Brett Harper is a professional hitter, but Baisley should probably have that spot with his ability to play 3B well. We’ll see what happens.

Oh, and some happy news
Dixon left the game in the sixth inning, and I’m presuming he wasn’t having early dinner plans…
3 out of 4 teams in last place and KC not doing much better
I guess we’re not a dominate minor league franchise anymore
Chris Carter is the next Hank Aaron right?

Meh, most of the time Sacramento was in first it was because of a lot of AAAA players
Now, the AAAA players are on the major league roster.

Sure, but just barely (.490 to .479)
And Carter has played in 43 games with 165 ABs compared to 25 for Donaldson and 96 ABs. Carter’s OPS is .816, Donaldson’s .817.
Carter is tied for second in homers (10) and tied for first in RBI (38) in the PCL, even with his struggles. That’s all right so far, could definitely be better with the power numbers and average, but this is why he needs to remain in Sacramento a while longer.

I really would like to see Carter get on base more
But as you said, nice to see him still OPS over .800 while struggling…

The bright side is Carter IS walking plenty
He’s just not getting the hits so far. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the approach. I think he’s been either unlucky or adjusting to the higher level (or a combination of both).

Adjusting
He’s striking out only slightly more than in 2008. I’d like him to be doing better, but it’s not enough to worry me.

Josh Donaldson is a catcher... that is all
PS Minor league RBIs are the most worthless stat ever

Josh Donaldson has spent part of the time with the A's, so any minor league stats...
…will be affected by less playing time compared to Carter’s.

MiLB RBIs are so worthless that they are even not worth mentioning.
Yes Donaldson has had less MiLB at bats than Carter. I really don’t care. Im not trying to make the point that he is a better hitter than Carter. Im trying to make the point that even as a -10 defensive catcher, his position is worth 20 Runs over Carter being a DH and right now hes hitting the same. Josh Donaldson is better than you think.

You seem to be hung up on the RBI thing since you keep talking about it when I didn't continue that point
And I also don’t seem to recall saying Donaldson was bad.
But, carry on without me on this particular thread if you like.
