5/11 Minor League Report: Return of FLDS and gadZOOKS!!
So first, the good news: Kurt raked AAA pitching in his rehab assignment and, according to SuSlu, will probably be joining the team tomorrow. Also, Fautino de los Santos re-appeared and is, in fact, not a ghost. He fared rather well in his first appearance in dayssssss.
In otherwise unsurprising news, another A bites the dust, as tweeted by Melissa Lockard:
Rashun Dixon has landed on the DL for Kane County with a left wrist injury. He was hitting .264 with an 810 OPS.
Also, Mickey Storey made it up to AAA and got lit up. And Justin Friend got a start. And Daniel Straily turned in a great performance. Lots of weird stuff in the system today.

Former A’s Esteban German and Gregorio Petit absolutely tore up the Rivercats. German went 4/5 with 3 doubles and scored 4 runs and drove one in, while Petit hit a double and a home run in route to also going 4/5, scoring 3 and driving in 3. Ouch.
All with Esteban playing 3B
and batting .303 for the young season.
Esteban German is still in baseball?!
Wow.
The selfish, they're all standing in line, faithing and hoping to buy themselves time.

Look, I do understand it's early
But Taylor, Carter and Green can’t keep coming up with these 0 fers with 1+ K’s every other game….
Also, Midland had previously reported that Weeks left last week with a “minor leg injury” but if he’s still out they’re either being very precautionary or it’s worth than they thought…

If he is
I definitely missed the press release…

He was put on the DL yesterday

Rashun Dixon
Another big bummer. Wrist injuries are not good. Dixon has pretty much been the only glimmer of hope in the Minors this season. Stassi has surprised me too. Solid power for a 19 Year Old.
So is FDLS a reliever for good now?
That would be a shame. Guy had legitimate ace upside.
i would hardly think this role is definitive of his status in the organization
he just came back from a 1.5 year layoff from tommy john surgery. They’re just getting him back into game shape, work him in through the bullpen first, ya know?
Or, so I’d think.
Hopefully, if he does well,
they’ll bump him back to a starting role. He really was something special when we got him.

I unfortunately remember someone in the A's FO
saying that they were moving him to relief, but I hope I’m making that up. Anybody else remember this?

Brett Hunter sighting in Stockton today.

"Carter's 25-game hitting streak isn't any normal streak. He's 46 for 97 (.474 average) during the run, adding 16 walks and compiling 81 total bases in the process. I'm out of superlatives for what he's doing." - Kevin Goldstein
Andrew Carignan also pitching in Stockton.

I heard a few minutes of the Ports-Nuts game on the radio today since I live in Modesto. I was surprised that they did that since it was a day game.

It's FAR too early to panic.
He steps to the left, he steps to the riiiiiiight. That Amos Roberts, he'll make you look shite!
Oh good
Yet another promising starter prospect turned into a reliever. Because we are just desperate for those right now.
/tongues cyanide capsule hidden in false tooth
I'm not sure he was ever tapped for the rotation
Well, whatever. If nothing else the team might be able to cadge an upgrade by moving Bailey or Wuertz to some desperate sucker at the deadline. They’re very replaceable.
Arthur Dent: You know, it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space, that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young.
Ford Prefect: Why, what did she tell you?
Arthur Dent: I don't know, I didn't listen!
I still see Beane giving him a shot at the rotation.
I think he was just soo F’d up last year, a slow intro back into pitching with new mechanics in the pen prob isnt a bad idea.

I don't think Hunter is set for Reliever
They invested too much in him just a couple years ago to immediately decide that. I think they’ll give him another shot…that’s if we are talking about hunter.

Slusser has been tweeting on Suzuki today
seems that he was sore after Tuesday night’s game in Oklahoma City. The latest is that his return to the A’s will be delayed by “a day or three”
Baseball America about Stassi
Stassi Powers Up
The Athletics anted up $1.5 million to sign catcher Max Stassi as a fourth-round pick last year. So far, Stassi has been holding up his end of the deal. The 19-year-old went deep last night for the sixth time this year with low Class A Kane County as part of a 2-for-5 night. Stassi has shown his youth with a Midwest League-high 44 strikeouts in 117 at-bats, but he’s been holding his own at the most demanding position on the field, hitting .274/.344/.496. His six long balls rank fourth in the MWL, with the three players ahead of him all being at least 22 years old. Stassi could also be headed to a Prospect Hot Sheet near you, as he’s homered twice and added three doubles since last Friday.
Can't teach power. He's looking good so far.
He steps to the left, he steps to the riiiiiiight. That Amos Roberts, he'll make you look shite!
Yeah.
Im pleased with him so far this year.

Report from Bricktown
The wifey and I watched our Sacramento Rivercats lose two games Tuesday night and Wednesday morning to the Rangers AAA affiliate, the Oklahoma City Redbirds, whom my wife constantly referred to as the RedHots. SSS observations follow.
Overall: The Rivercats are in trouble. I am willing to give them a break and say that Tuesday’s poor effort resulted from jetlag after a tough flight that morning. And I am willing to say that Wednesday’s 1-0 loss showed the team has a pulse, but it is definitely on life support.
After a couple of routine double-plays late Wednesday, the middle infield shared some high-fives, but that was the only hint of spirit or team comraderie I saw. If I had to describe this team at this point with one image, it would be a long line of solemn hitters trudging back to the dugout after their strikeout. Man, it was grim.
Now I love these guys, and just Sunday, they showed their talent with a 16-5 blowout of Colorado Springs. But the Cats are in a team slump of epic proportions. This may take awhile to work out.
Zuke: It was a pleasure to watch Suzuki catch from just behind home plate. He is a master. Instantly the best hitter on the team. All of you calling for a long-term contract are correct. We must not ever lose this guy.
Cust: I apologize for ever thinking at any time that Cust might have been upset at moving down to AAA and not giving his all. Cust made the catch of his life Wednesday in RF, chasing a bomb to the wall and making a lunging, if not diving, catch. He is most definitely fighting to get back to Oakland.
Chris Carter: Chris went 1 for 6 with 3 K’s, but his swing looks sound. Still fooled on breaking balls. He needs to be in AAA all season with a September cup of coffee. Chris will be fine. After watching Chris 2 years ago at Stockton, and last year at Midland, the following seems abundantly clear to me. When Carter hits, the team wins, when he slumps, the team loses. This guy is the difference-maker. Take our time, Make sure he is ready.
Big Mike Taylor: I hope this is temporary, but Taylor has a terrible swing. On one pitch, he has a Custian uppercut. On the next, he is hacking down on it like he was cutting wood with an axe. The Taylor-Wallace trade may go down in history. Like Boston trading Ruth to NY. Scarey. Please, Michael, make me look like an idiot. Repeat after me: SSS, SSS.
Defense: Wimberly had a brain freeze in LF and just held the ball while a runner advanced to 2nd. Hey, Corey, throw it into the infield. Cardenas had a brain fart at 3rd. With two outs and a runner on 2nd, Adrian cleanly fielded a sharp grounder. The runner headed toward 3rd just in front of him. “OK, I’ll throw to 1st…..No, I’ll just tag this guy…..Wait, I’ll throw to 1st…..Oh, crap, too late.”
Cardenas: He will be fine at 3rd with more experience. Much more experience. At least a full season. Moves well. Strong arm. His swing looked calm and quick. I think he will rather quickly be back batting .300+.
Corey Brown: His swing looks busier and longer than last year at Midland. I remember it being lightning quick. It was nice and smooth, just too long, and therefore missing balls. Corey did, however, make two spectacular layout catches. He is a very good CF.
Storey: Had not seen him before. Didn’t have his best stuff. Hung a slider for one jack. His fast ball had no movement and one down the middle also was knocked out. Better luck next time.
Lenny DiNardo: Although Braden’s granny can throw it faster, LD managed a complete game Wednesday. He threw slow, then slower, then….. Amazing. We still lost 1-0, but fun to watch. Sort of a reverse-Henry.
Can’t wait to see the Cats again.
An excellent report.
Thanks Red. Thanks also to the people keeping this going. I’m hoping to help out sometime soon once work settles down. Go A’s!

Stanford Approach
“On one pitch, he has a Custian uppercut (New Approach). On the next, he is hacking down on it like he was cutting wood with an axe (Stanford Approach)”
I see Michael Taylor is now on the minor league DL
This is fucking ridiculous. This “medical” staff has gotten to the point that they can break players with no injury history in just a month or two.
Arthur Dent: You know, it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space, that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young.
