Braden Dazzles M's as Mark Ellis Delivers Walkoff Win in Extra Innings (2-1)
Now this is more like it!
Mark Ellis shot a line drive into right field to bring the winning run home in the bottom of the 10th inning as his teammates ran out onto the field. As can probably be divined from the final score, the A's offense produced mostly sputters and false starts, with the lone exception being Kurt Suzuki's solo HR in the 4th inning. The A's were flummoxed by Ian Snell, managing only three hits and two walks. It wasn't until Don Wakamatsu brought Seattle's bullpen into the picture that the A's offense showed some life, tallying five hits against Rule V rookie Kanekoa Texeira.
Unfortunately, most of that offensive life went to waste, as the A's left seemingly a hundred men stranded on the bases. In the bottom of the 9th, the A's had men on 2nd and 3rd with one out. Cliff Pennington walked (with the help of two pitchouts hoping for a squeeze play that never materialized), and Rajai Davis came up to bat. He did little to allay fears that last season was a fluke, as he watched a fastball low and outside, then proceeded to strikeout on three straight curveballs. Daric Barton had a better at-bat, but again failed to bring any runs home by flying out to end the inning.
Thankfully, the A's were simply sterling on the defensive side of things. Dallas Braden made a definitive statement tonight, wowing the Oakland crowd with ten strikeouts over seven innings. The lone Mariners run came when Franklin Gutierrez doubled with one out in the top of the 4th inning. He got no help from his teammates but needed none, as Dallas Braden was called for a balk on a pickoff move, followed by a wild changeup in the dirt, allowing Gutierrez to score. Braden scattered four hits and one walk in his seven sparkling innings.
The A's do it all over again tomorrow night against the Mariners as they send Ryan Rowland-Smith to face off against the mighty Justin Duchscherer, making his first regular-season start since 2008.

Good win
Although one run off Snell is a bit discouraging, and I’m still a bit miffed at Geren’s bullpen management (specifically, leaving in Ziggy to face Ichiro and THEN pulling him for a lefty. I know Ichiro doesn’t have a L-R split, bug Ziggy does). Gotta be discouraging for the mariners. Their offense looks horrible, and Figgins looked much worse at 2nd than he did at 3rd last year. Wonder how long that silly experiment will last.

I think Breslow was in to stop Ichiro from running,
more than for L/R reasons. And if Ziggy gets Ichiro out, he can stay in until further notice. I think that was Geren’s thinking and I’m down with it.

The A’s were going deep into every count, and as was noted, the umpire gave the kid a break when Barton was at bat. You’ve got a Rule V kid out there who managed, just barely, to escape a bases loaded situation. You don’t leave him in for another inning. That’s nuts.

Pennington i think is legit
Since being called up last season along with an impressive spring, and these first couple games so far has done nothing to disprove he can be a solid player. Hopefully adds some stability to the SS position since tejada left.
Pennington
He started 60 games at shortstop in 2009. In his first 29 games, he had a .642 OPS. In his last 31 games he posted an .867 OPS. He’s picking up right where he left off, thankfully.

All this ‘No way San Jose’ stuff is stupid. The franchise is dying in Oakland – for whatever reason.

"whatever reason" is not enough
if you don’t know why you can’t assume that a move to San José will solve the problem
it's dying in Oakland because they are the only major league team to not have
a new stadium in the last ten or fifteen years. The Giants were on their way to Tampa and drawing at the bottom of the NL in Candlestick before their politicians had the wherewithal to make some things happen. It’s not a matter of San Jose or not. It’s a matter of a new stadium.

I've noticed that of the many former A's games attendees I've spoken to
these last few years, none have mentioned that they stopped attending because the A’s don’t have a new ballpark. This doesn’t mean I think they don’t need one – they do.
The reasons given over and over again are the A’s trading away players that they know, the team not doing well, the difficulty with the radio station, and the perceived dissing of Oakland by the ownership through a variety of actions.
Again, I’m not saying I agree with all this — after all, I’m still a season ticket holder.
It is a self-perpetuating cycle....they can't do the things the fans want without the revenue streams....
can’t create the revenue streams without a better facility. And on it goes
Actually...
Many people I have talked to said they stopped going to A’s games when the Raiders came back and turned the stadium into this craptasticness that it is now.
I still go to games but yeah it totally does suck. Would have been nice to have the view of the Oakland foothills and a nicer set up for the bleachers, etc.
Also, crappy, empty ballpark definitely pushes casual fans away.

I agree that we need a new stadium
But I hardly think it’s a view of the Oakland hills and the bleacher setup that’s the problem here.
The A’s marketing team is fooling themselves if they think they need to do absolutely no work on building their brand and visibility and that eventually, someday, maybe, hopefully moving to San Jose is going to magically fix their problems.
They could work hard to sell the product they have now, and that would serve them well today and in the future.

I don't disagree with you in any particular way
But i do think that their claims of elasticity and attendance is more or less true and that better marketing wouldn’t actually help them that much. At least not in their current stadium situation. But you’re absolutely 100% right that they need to start working ahead towards wherever that future will be otherwise they’ll fall flat and it won’t be a stadium problem. But maybe they’re waiting on doing that until they actually have a real plan in motion.
Leopold Bloom on why he loves Mr. Peter Gammons, his best buddy:
"Peter Gammons systematically ignored and/or ran down the A’s in the pages of Sports Illustrated and The Sporting News for a good ten year stretch in the late seventies and early to mid-eighties. Trust me, the c**ksucker hates our team."
There are lots of problems with the current venue.
I have been attending games since the early 70’s and from a nostalgic point of view I love it. But the reality is that the stadium really does not function well when compared to more recently built stadiums, it’s location in Oakland is scary anymore, the coliseum is run by Alameda County- and run poorly! Look at the sponsors, the A’s are not attracting any big sponsors because of attendance (how many and who is attending).
San Jose makes a ton of sense. A new non-shared stadium in a City that would support them being there! Oakland’s fight to save the A’s is all lip service. If Oakland could truly come up with a site near Jack London Square that might be something, but all they do is talk.

by Leopold Bloom on Apr 7, 2010 2:33 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't think the location is the problem
I think it does not motivate people to go to the games, but won’t keep them away.
To get 10K “core” people, you don’t need to do anything.
To get 10k more “Fans” you need a little extra (recognizable player, entertainment environment)
to get 10 K “interested persons” more you need convenience (like a centrally located stadium on their way home from work).
To get 10k more you need all of the above and a winning team.
The trouble with the stadium is people have to make an affirmative choice to go to the game. It is out of the way for everyone.
All the little things have gone wrong for the Colosseum. That’s why people don’t show up. Any new stadium that is centrally located near people’s work will fix the attendance problem. The real question is can Oakland actually do it? I am reasonable certain San Jose can.
"The ego, the super-ego, and the Ed" - danmerqury
My reason
I am a huge fan and only go to 2-3 games a year. I live in San Jose.
Frankly I enjoy watching in HD more in the comfort of my home.
If they move to San Jose and have a nice park, I would go a lot more, maybe 20-25 games. Heck my employer would probably be a sponsor with a box so I might even go more (we are for the Sharks).
If they stay in Oakland but get a new park I would go to maybe 5-10 games on the weekends only.
My reasons for not going are the stadium and the city/location. I think this is not uncommon. The increasing number of HD broadcasts is also probably not helping.
I don’t blame the team or ownership for my lack of desire to attend the games. I know they are working hard to provide me with what I want. MLB and the Giants however…
apparently attendance for the home opener last night was the lowest since 1980

He has been a little bit slow at the plate, but from yesterday to today you could tell his bat speed was a little bit better and he was able to get a hit. He really hasn’t played for 2 years, so he is on the right track and should start to hit better as the month progresses.

I thought Garen did well tonight
I’m usually bashing Bob and tonight I thought he utilized the roster fairly well. Bringing Bailey in the 9th to face the heart of the order made a lot of sense to me. I like the fact he road out Pennington’s hot bat late in the game when I am sure it was tempting to pinch hit Fox. Pinch running for Kouz was a bit risky and could have backfired if the game continued to draw out but was not completely retarded. Over all he did not fuck up and I think that’s a solid performance for him.
"-i never said half the things i said." --Yogi Berra
Couple additional thoughts:
This performance by Braden shocked me. He was the starter I had the least confidence in. Sheets has an awesome 4x All-Star track record, Duke is always fantastic, Anderson is an amazingly talented youngster, and Gio has huge potential, albeit with some very bad days. But Braden reminds me of Blanton in a way (although certainly not in appearance and personality) in that he’s consistently slightly better than average, without any flash or huge numbers. But damn, 10 Ks? I may have to revise that impression.
Can’t say enough about how great the batting order is. I prepared myself before the season to expect a pukefest of Rajai-Coco at 1 and 2. Fangraphs posted an article recently comparing the opening day batting orders to their mathematically most efficient counterparts. We ranked third. Love love love Barton batting second. He deserves it through and through.

Geren keeps Barton in the 2 hole if and when Coco ever plays a game. I’m not as sold on Raji as a lot of folks are. He can’t regularly make contact, has no strike zone awareness and no fundamental skills like bunting or a hit and run swing. It seems we would be hitting him 2nd for the sole reason he is fast. Even Raji looks surprised when he hits the ball. I’m thinking Raji in the 9 hole makes sense and lead off when Crisp is not playing.

Kouz makes me nervous when he throws the ball across the diamond. He seems to have to aim the ball more then a big league player should. It’s less of a fluid motion and more of a forced toss. Tough to explain but I get the same feeling watching Kouz throw a baseball that I get when Raji catches one.

Not to start a huge conspiracy theory or anything
But with the news of DuPuy visiting with SJ officials Monday, I wonder if some of the delay on the stadium report has to do with MLB officials seeing how attendance goes the first month or so? I know that appointing a committee is in some ways, a ploy itself to delay decisions, but it’s just been a long time already.

I think it's more to do with $$ for the Giants territorial rights payoff
and Selig knows he needs 75 % of owners to approve. You never know if setting that kind of precedent will be approved, or how long it would take — or what it would take — to get that approval.
Even if they do voters in San José would have to approve building a ballpark in the November ballot….and yes, the project does include use of public funds.
I'm sure he does have convincing to do, but the argument can't be all that hard
considering the other owners were convinced to buyout the Expos’ owners, and also pay off Peter Angelos in the process. All the owners will make more money if the A’s have a new stadium, and will also stop paying the A’s in revenue sharing. It’s a win-win, IMO.
I believe the straw poll said that a majority of SJ voters would approve public funds, right?

I beleive the only public funds is the giving of the land.

I have been a Braden skeptic
He had his injury issues in the minors, stopped throwing the screwball. One of those pitchers early on in the Sacramento, Oakland shuttle. Matter of fact, it looked like there wasnt much difference between Braden, WIndsor, Komine, etc who had chances in 06 and 07. When A’s were desperately looking back rotation stability and getting surprising performances out of saarloos, gaudin, dinardo, kennedy types off the scrap heaps. Windsor, Komine never got over their injuries and faded away. Later on it looked like Greg Smith and Eveland surpassed him during 08. Then Braden had a very surprising 1st half of 09, with injuries and poor results later. He’s like a lefty version of duke who relies on control and a ridiculously good off speed pitch. He battles out there like tim hudson. Obviously needs to avoid further injury issues which has plagued him since the minors.
Great pitching performance
Too bad about the balk call that allowed the Mariners runner to get to third. Otherwise the A’s win 1-0.
Anyways there’s still a lot of work that the A’s need to do offensively. It looks like the A’s are going to lead the league in grounding into double plays.
Glad Kouzmanoff came back with two hits tonight, but he still hasn’t hit a ball in the air.
go Dallas
Like danmerqury, I’ve been worried that Dallas’ performance last year was a fluke. But he was fantastic last night. I had great seats, in the first row of 118 (best valentine’s day present ever!). Braden’s location was perfect, with most pitches down in the zone and most of the Mariners batters never figured out his changeup (I’m thinking of Bradley and Lopez, in particular).
Game score of 74 is the best of 2010 so far! (narrowly beating out Buerhle)
True, but Buerhle gets a 100-point "completely ridiculous play" bonus

wouldn't that ruin the mood?
I mean, an A’s hat, sure, but that horrid orange and black? Ick. Instant turnoff.

Only place I know of is Baseball-Reference.
I like to think of Game Score like football’s passer rating. It tries to rate a pitcher’s performance on a given day in one number.

Quarterback Rating
I’ve always thought of it as an interesting statistic because it is impossible for anyone to figure it out without a high-level mathematics degree.

Yay for Braden! That was awesome, even if the Mariners were swinging at pitches that weren't strikes
I guess he was setting them up for that by throwing strikes early in the count.
Seattle’s bullpen could be there downfall this season. Don Wak is crazy for leaving that guy in there for the 10th. Why not bring in someone else after he gave up the first single at least?

I just saw the barton play over there for the first time
it made the blood boil. How was barton out? he ran to second. the Runner makes the baseline, if noone is attempting to tag him he can run whereever he wants.
Just a horrible call. and the 1st base ump was not looking at the ball.
