An Attempt At Optimism
Duke is down. Suzuki hasn't played in days. Anderson, Buck and Ellis have gone on the DL recently. Rajai is swinging at everything and losing at-bats. Jake Fox is going to be eligible at Catcher in fantasy leagues soon and Eric Patterson has been starting games. Ben Sheets can't seem to decide if he wants to pitch well this year. This is not good news, any of it.
We've dropped three straight and are only two games out of the cellar in the AL West as the offense has been mostly as advertised (lousy singles parade with a chance of doubles) and the pitching is starting to look a bit shaky.
Oh, and the M's are getting Cliff Lee back tonight. Sweet.
But it really isn't all bad. At least I'm trying to tell myself that.
We just called up Cahill and Mazzaro to replace our injured starters. Even though some of the shine has come off of Cahill a little, the dude's still only 22 and even if I'd like to see him get more time in AAA, he should be okay. Vin was at least a serviceable back-of-the-rotation guy last year, even though he was often wild and/or hittable. This year (month) in Sac he's been striking out more than a batter an inning, which is encouraging, though his walk rate is still pretty ugly. However, the beauty of this optimistic exercise is that I can discard the walk rate as a sample size issue and believe the K's. And seriously, Ollie Perez iswith a chance of n't a bad guy to have....as long as he's your 7th starter.
Crisp should be back soon, and while I'm not a huge fan of the guy, our outfield should improve elevenfold if we push Patterson back into the preferred "versatile pinch-runner" slot on the bench and replace him at left field with either Gross or Davis.
Barton looks great and just hit his first homer. More taters in the future? God, I sure hope so.
Pennington is looking like a major league player. He's showing some power and has silenced any talk of a position battle at short.
Adam Rosales is fun to watch.
We have position player reinforcements aplenty in AAA, from Cust (who bends the definition of position player) to future standbys of Carter, Cardenas and Taylor.
We're still tied for first in the West after dropping three straight. We've had some rough luck, but I don't think the wheels are coming off just yet. This is a winnable division for every single team in the West and there's a lot of baseball yet to play.
Lets go Oakland!

Beane's offseason moves were aimed at increasing depth
to deal with injuries, so that the dropoff wouldn’t be so great if they needed reinforcements.
Hopefully the plan works.
Don't check on Cardenas right now
you may not like what you see.

its still super early ..
getting off to a good start was great but now if we are dealing with injuries we are going to have to steal wins and wait till june/july/aug when the A’s always heat up
we still have a very solid record against AL west teams
It's not always bad to be in last place. Here's some things we can focus on:
One, we tried hard. And two, we’re still dear friends!

I love optimists!
I am much happier this April than April of 2009! We may be down a bit but we ain’t out- keep the positive vibes going.

I am upset and angry about non-A's things.
If I had a bevy of disposable clones or homonculi, I would stab them in the neck one by one a la “She loves me… she loves me not…”
I am happy and positive about the incredible depth of this club and still believe the A’s will show long-term improvements over the course of this year. I think this club has the potential to kick ass like the 2003 Marlins next year, with the youngsters leading the way. There are just some rocky roads between now and then, that’s all.

Just saw today's score...and Cahill's line
Sorry, but not feeling very optimisitic
Am I evil, since I don't think...
the fully healthy A’s are competitive enough to hang with the Rays, Yankees…you know, playoff teams. So, I actually wish they would do more poorly so they’re not in contention and they do get something for Sheets.
Of course, this is with an eye out for the future. B/C even if Taylor & Carter go Bananas, they have a great 2-3-4 (w/Barton), and a bunch of #8 & 9 hitters. Not good enough. Hoping we can get at least one blue chipper, or at least a bunch of prospects so we can turn around & get someone legit.
Not evil, but....
First, I don’t think I could ever root for my team to lose, even to lose a single game to get a draft pick. If we’re out of contention at the trade deadline and can get something for Sheets that’s fine with me (though it would temporarily silence some obnoxious folks if we didn’t), but I’m not wishing for that. There’s way more value in an exciting and interesting season to me than dreaming on prospects (which I like and all, but I’ve had plenty), and I’d love to have to agonize over who we’re willing to give up in July to get a piece.
Also, if Ben Sheets decides to show up and start pitching well I think we’ll be too close to contention to trade him. If he’s mediocre (or worse), what GM on a contender is going to give up a blue chip prospect to get him? At that point the team he goes to is going be able to use salary relief as leverage and we’ll get a C prospect or two.
The only way I see a trade for Good Sheets™ is if we’re trading from a position of depth (starting pitching) in order to add a bat. And lets be honest here, that kind of trade almost never happens.
No, the offense is not going to consistently score runs the way it’s currently constructed, but it’s not completely impotent. And look around, if Texas continues its implosion and the Mariners continue to make us look like offensive Juggernauts we really only have to worry about Sciosa’s slegnA to keep the West within reach.
If we actually get to the playoffs, of course we’re not going to be as good as the Rays or Yankees. But it’s the playoffs, the best teams don’t always get to win (Exhibit A: The early 2000s.), so lets get lucky.

I'd like to note...
That someone wishing for us to go out of contention and become sellers created some sort of weird fan inversion inside of me that made a World Series victory seem vaguely possible. I hadn’t even remotely considered it until now. Funny.

Ben Sheets...?!?!?!
I’d like to know exactly what the A’s could get for Ben Sheets about now? All of the excuses for all of the runs given up during spring training are suddenly resurfacing. He is clearly the worst #1 started in the majors, shouldn’t even be piching at this point.
Is that your sales pitch to other teams?

Hindsight’s 20/20, Milton Bradley helped us get to the playoffs, blah blah blah.
Anyone else realize if we still had Carlos Gonzalez, Andre Ethier, and Nelson Cruz the A’s would have the best outfield in the bigs? I do wonder though, would these guys have achieved their current success while developing in the A’s system?
What about Barry?
"Barry who?" Forst said, and I felt like I was in the middle of a knock-knock joke.
Milton Bradley
To even think that guy was going to be the player that made us champions should cost somebody their job.
