Robert Buan's Contract Terminated by KTRB

From Robert Buan's Facebook page:

Bad news (or good, depending on who you ask): KTRB has chosen to terminate my contract. Thanks to you all for everything over years on the post-game.

Whatever your opinion of Robert's perspectives, I take this as bad news. I assume this is a cost-cutting move as I don't know that Robert gets negative feedback from the fans that listen. First Marty Lurie, now Robert. Wtf?!

Huh.

Too bad, I suppose. I’m sure he’s a good dude and everything, and there will be an outpour of “OMFG Buan noooooooo!” from AN, but…

He wasn’t a very good broadcaster, the “Buancast” thing had become a running joke here on AN because he was really not very good at delivering information during games, and his postgame show had already been replaced by that Townsend guy, rigth?

But I also don’t know that Buan was all that. Seems like a nice, personable guy but I never did listen to much of his stuff.

That is all.

Actually, that is not all.

Townsend has a radio show here in Sac.

And, having listened to it, I can tell you that he’s a major downgrade in comparison to Buan.

"PECOTA can pretty much kiss my ass."-Nico

by jeepers on Apr 4, 2010 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I can see, though, how Townsend has a bigger upside to radio business types

Hearing him for a couple hours this spring, he seems like he’s more of the classic radio sports talk model: sharp, clipped delivery, quick to leap to opinions, and above all, a style which is very much aware that pushing the buttons of a radio audience is the ticket to Arbitron ratings (and, presumably, to his next, more prestigious job).

Buan was a big glass of bland, served at room temperature. Opinions always lodged squarely in the conventional wisdom, and unwilling to criticize the team’s (or any specific player’s) approach on nearly anything. Not hard to see how KTRB might’ve concluded that Buan’s radio numbers had flatlined forever.

Everybody's got a little light under the sun.

I would think that makes it feel less like

a personal rejection to Robert. Whenever you’re fired, it’s like rejection, but if they replace you with someone similar it’s like saying you weren’t good at it, whereas if they hire someone with a totally different style it’s like, “OK, they want to go in the jackass shock-jockey direction and that’s totally not me.”

Still doesn’t pay his bills while he looks for a new job, but maybe it makes it feel not so bad.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

Yeah, I don't know how he's taking it but I'm sure he'll be fine

It’s just one of those things: for radio talk shows and newspaper columnists, the more outrageous you are the more of a reaction you get, which in turn leads to the employers believing you’re going to generate more attention for them and their sponsors, yadda yadda and all that.

Last of the Ninth - Photography

by Flashfire on Apr 4, 2010 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions

The irony is that, even by ratings standards,

the loudmouth host doesn’t even create a better show. The real difference is that he attracts more attention to himself, so then the radio station can advertise “the Jim Rome show!”, “the Colin Cowherd show!”, “the Gary Radnich show!” and people will say “Oh yeah, I remember that guy.”

They remember that guy because he dominated the show with his personality. They might actually prefer a show where the host is a lower-profile guy who actually lets the interviewees do more of the talking and doesn’t pick fights with all the callers. But though they may like the show better, they won’t remember the brand name of the host, so it doesn’t help the radio station for continuing to plug the brand.

That is why obnoxious jackasses thrive on talk radio and cable TV, not necessarily because the audiences actually prefer them.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

a terrible, awful commentator & announcer

Truly truly, I felt all through his tenure that many of us here could do it better, myself and my Face for Radio included. And don’t even get me started on Mr. Bloom, cuz I’d douse myself with gas and set myself ablaze if it’d get that guy hired to do the A’s postgame..

That said, this is an ugly way to fire someone who’s worked for you since you began broadcasting the games and on the A’s broadcasts for years previous if you’re KTRB…. I mean, he does all the Spring Games and then they come north and they bag him right before the season, that’s a bit harsh, no?

I utterly loathed his style and nasal voice, but in all fairness this is on the unceremonious side of termination IMO… I mean at least let the dude say goodbye to his listeners or something, damn.

KTRB might have been giving him the spring to try to prove himself.

I could see the radio gang uniformly asking that for RB. He was not a very good PxP guy. He was, in fact, one of the worst I ever heard, But they all loved him—KK, Ray, Vince…I could see them making a small stand for the guy.

The problem was the best on-air thing he could do was the post-game, and even that was horrible. I listened for years, but he was noticeably bad.

But, yeah, it was a cruel time to fire him.

I agree

Robert was not good on the air, and he was not going to get more than 1% better no matter how hard he tried. Not a knock on Robert; few people are natural broadcasters, many of those who are are not otherwise particularly admirable, and there are dozens of more important skills in the world than being able to babble interestingly in front of a microphone. .However, there are enough decent broadcasters around so there’s no need to have the lousy ones on the air. But smart managers and good companies find more graceful ways of easing people out of jobs that don’t fit.

originated from a Buancast. The A’s were hitting, and Buan had Ellis all over the diamond (he’s at second! no, he’s at first! wait, he went to third!), and probably scoring multiple times, so the only explanation for those listening (and game-threading) was that Ellis was riding a unicorn. Leopold Bloom on why he loves Mr. Peter Gammons, his best buddy:
"Peter Gammons systematically ignored and/or ran down the A’s in the pages of Sports Illustrated and The Sporting News for a good ten year stretch in the late seventies and early to mid-eighties. Trust me, the c**ksucker hates our team."

Robert is an employee of the A's, not of KTRB

so I’m a bit confused by this information. Have the A’s fired him?

Random notes: KTRB (860 AM), flagship station for the A’s, has tapped Chris Townsend to host the team’s postgame shows. Townsend has a syndicated all-night show on the Sports Byline Network on more than 500 stations. He’s also worked with the Giants, Warriors and 49ers on television. Robert Buan, the A’s broadcast manager who’d been host of “A’s Talk,” will contribute interviews and commentary.

Honestly, I will miss him a lot.

I really enjoyed the postgame show and I thought “Buancasts” were such a unique part of being an A’s fan. I loved the game threads with Buancasts. :-)

Perhaps it referred to KTRB hiring someone to do the postgame, which it did a about a month ago. As far as I know Buan is still an employee of the A’s. As I said, both he and Townsend were on the show last night.

This is kind of like when we traded Jack Hannahan.

Was Buan particularly great at his job? Well, no, probably not, but I still thought he was a cool guy and I liked him.

So it’s kind of a bummer. But it’s not an epic uber-bummer like it would be if we lost Ken Korach.

Hopefully Robert will find somewhere else to ply his Buaniness.

Obviously not a PxP guy, but those broadcasts were just in ST anyway. I asked him on his FB page what the deal is with his contract. I thought he would still be employed by the A’s regardless of anything that happened with KTRB, but we’ll see.

Just found this: Buan said today he was

informed Friday that his contract with KTRB 860 was terminated. Chris Townsend had taken over host duties for the postgame show, but Buan was still working with the show in a reporting capacity. Buan still holds a job within the A’s front office."

Stiglich has the news… Sorry I can’t do proper links with my iPhone.

So this means, I guess, that Buan still has his A’s job but KTRB doesn’t want him appearing at all in the Postgame. Since Townsend has been hosting the Postgame for over a month, I suspect something more is going on.

by OaklandSi on Apr 2, 2010 10:30 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

Yeah, maybe the KTRB brass

if there is such a thing, didn’t want Buanfans …if there are such a thing, to have issue with his being relegated to on-air correspondent. I thought they had a decent rapport but maybe Townshend didn’t want to share the show with anyone, particularly the former host.

he is softer spoken, which i like better than most sports radio people. His rapport withthe players is cool. he often went rouge in the questions talking about non sports stuff which i liked.

he is not the best pbp that’s for sure, but i like the bauncasts. its a wholly unique art form.

maybe its only me, but i don’t think he was talking to hear himself. it sounded as if he thought no one was listening.

Robert Buan

is goofy, always cheerful, and almost never mean. That’s so refreshing in sports radio. Other guys may know what they’re talking about, but so many of them are loudmouth smart-ass bullies. I hate that.

by iglew on Apr 3, 2010 10:31 AM PDT up reply actions

Agree that he was always cheerful, and I liked that, but...

…he would also never take on, or allow others to talk about, potentially negative or tough subjects, and I hated that. (At least when I used to listen to him, which has been a few years) I get nothing out of an always-warm-and-fuzzy-everything’s-peachy format. I do believe you can be relevant and “real’” without being an ass or bully at the same time.

Not really a Buan fan but...

…the guy he repalced, Rich Herrera, was such a no-nothing blowhard and former-Giants shill, it made Robert look a little better than he really was. At least Robert was somewhat informed, polite, didn’t scoff at objective analysis, and didn’t rip the A’s in his previous job.

Robert was better than Rich and that counts for something.
