GOG 2010 #5 - The one that copies nevermoor

My motto is if copying is not illegal, why not?  nm put a lot of hard work into compiling rules and places to see things and such.  Who wouldn't want that in their GOG?

GOG Rules

Hello, the GOGs have gotten off to quite a start, but since the season snuck up on all of us (and colin isn't simply doing all the work this year) we got through three series without laying the ground rules.  But then nevermoor came along with GOG #4 and changed all that, because, let's face it, he's super awesome and shit.  Here, then, are the ground rules  (see additional discussion here):

To participate in the GOG, you need to do four things:

  1. Post your guesses in the AN GOG thread before the first pitch of the series;
  2. Check back after the series for the correct answers;
  3. Reply to your guesses with your score; and
  4. Go to the GOG tool and input your score into the system.

You must do ALL FOUR of these things in order for your score to count. If we have a problem getting scores entered, we might set deadlines.

Please take a moment to go back to the first four GOGs here and complete steps 2-4 if you have not already.  If your screen name is not on the drop-down menu at the scoring website, please reply to my comment below (which should be the first one in this FanPost.  nevermoor will then add you permanently to the GOG roster.

Benefits of GOG Rules

The GOG website will automatically calculate the overall leader (link goes to total score, use the drop down for other measures), the leader of each GOG (link goes to GOG 3, use the drop down for other ones), and a table of users and scores.  They are all live, so you'll be able to see the standings adjust as people enter their grades.

Also, since so many of us are posting GOGs, there really isn't a way to do scoring without each of you helping out.  And GOGs without scores would be a whole lot less fun.

Linky

The probable starting pitchers.

GOG #5 Those Damn Yankees - 24 points possible

1.  They come for three games.  Series outcome (3 pts.)

2.  In his first two starts this season, Sheets allowed a combined 14 hits and six runs -- five of them earned. He walked seven and struck out only four, but in his most recent outing against the Orioles, Sheets proved he's making progress toward returning to his former All-Star self. He tossed six scoreless innings against Baltimore, which tagged him for just five hits while walking three times and fanning four times. Sheets mastered the Yankees in his lone career start against them, but that came five years ago when he tossed seven shutout innings while surrendering just two hits.  Plagiarism aside, predict Sheets results Wednesday vs. Hughes,  IP/More BB or K/hits allowed (1 pt. each)

3.  Pitchers duel!  On getaway day, CC versus Pepe!  Begin planning your fake illness now.  Work is not worth missing this for.  Just do it.  Thursday, who pitches better? (Who pitches "better" based on IP, Less H+BB, Runs allowed) (2 pts.)

4.  In a three game series with Texas, Brett Gardner had eight plate appearances.  He stole four bases and was caught stealing a fifth time, and he did so against both Treanor and Teagarden.  Can the awesome combo of Suzuki/Fox do better (For the record, Suzuki has given up 5 sb and had 4 cs)?  Predict the number of stolen bases Gardner has (+/-1), the number of times we catch him stealing, and if he steals more than Rajai. (1 pt. each)

5.  A-Rod FINALLY went deep on Saturday.  Whew!  I know we were all worried about Ol' Purple Lips lack of power this season.  To be fair, it was against Doug Mathis, who pitched 3.2 innings in mop up vs. the Yankees and only gave up two home runs and six hits.  Will the 25 million dollar man go deep in Oakland?  Will he hit more than one? How many times does he K (+/-1)? (1 pt. each)

6.  Derek Jeter leads the Yankees with 19 hits.  Ryan Sweeney leads the A's with 16.  Who has more hits this series? (1 pt.)

7.  Cliff Pennington leads the A's with 22 total bases (damn swingles!).  There are FIVE Yankees with higher total bases (in order, Cano, Jeter, Posada, Granderson, Purple Lips).  Will this change or will there remain five Yankees ahead of our shiny new short stop?  (+1 if right/-1 if wrong)

8.  Our unicorn is supposed to be out of the shop in time for Tuesday's game.  Rosales has really made us miss him quite a bit less than we would and has really allowed us to take our time with unicorn healing-time.  How many games does Ellis start vs. Rosales?  Who has a better OBP?  Does either commit an error? (1 pt. each)

9.  Speaking of errors, our own little Dale has made four this young season.  He's probably not on his way to getting that golden glove.  As a team, we've committed 13 (granted, opening night's four didn't help), while the Yankees have committed only 4 total, with no one with more than one error.  Who commits more errors this series. A's vs. Yankees (+1 if right/ -1 if wrong)?  Bonus point, which individual player commits the most errors? (1 pt.)

10.  Poor Travis seems to be becoming marginalized again.  After starting the first six games, he's only managed three starts in the last eight.  With Gabe Gross coming on and E-Pat standing in the wings and Crisp soon to return, will Travis get a chance versus the Yankees?  Predict games started, plate appearances, hits plus BBs. (1 pt. each)

ANSWERS (thank you, Dr. K and LS)

1. 2-1 Yankees
2. 6 IP, more Ks, 4 hits
3. CC – 8 IP, 10 H+BB, 4 runs, Braden – 6 IP, 7 H+BB, 2 runs – Braden wins on two of three categories, so I’d say Braden. CC does have the better pitcher’s game score (59 vs 53), mainly for going two more innings.
4. 0 steals, 0 CS, no
5. Yes, no, 1
6. They both had one hit
7. Unchanged
8. One start, neither man got on base, no boots, and one trip to the DL
9. Yankees (1 – 0), Cano
10. One start, 3 PA, one hit, one trip to the DL

My guesses

1. They come for three games. Series outcome (3 pts.) 2-1 A’s

Rainout

If there is a PPD do we wait to score this series until the makeup game is completed? I know that it’s and IF but the situation is likely going to come into play at some point this season. Thanks in advance.

We certainly don't wait (unless the makeup game is a DH the next day or something)

I think if it was before the series started last year colin let people change answers until the first game actually started, but if it was mid series then everyone just got answers wrong (unless someone guessed it)

I am the king of wishful thinking!

1. Series outcome (3 pts.) A’s 2-1
2. Sheets results (1 pt. each) 5 IP / More BB than K / 7 H
3. Thursday, who pitches better (based on IP, Less H+BB, Runs allowed) (2 pts.) Braden
4. Gardner (1 pt. each) 2 steals (+ /-1) / 0 CS / Rajai has more
5. A-Rod (1 pt. each) No HR / Not more than 1 HR / 3 (+ /-1) K
6. Jeter vs. Sweeney, more hits (1 pt.) Sweeney
7. Cliff Pennington vs. 5 Yanks, total bases? (1 if right/-1 if wrong) Yanks
8. Ellis vs. Rosales? (1 pt. each) Ellis starts 3 at 2B, but Rosales also starts 1 game (SS/LF) / Ellis better OBP / No errors.
9. More errors. (1 if right/ -1 if wrong) Yanks. Most errors? (1 pt.) A-Rod (points for tie, right?)
10. Poor Travis. (1 pt. each) 0 Starts, 2 PA, 0 H/BBs.

I find it tough to out-think the manager in terms of who gets starts – feels like total guesswork, and makes me want to wait until near-game time to post! SS reports that Ellis is iffy, Pennington is feeling banged up.

A few tweaks

1. The full score dump will now link to the GOGs. This allows for both easier checking if people want to verify scores and for future GOGers to avoid having to link to all previous GOGs. They can just link to that page and people can find where they have not entered scores and link to that GOG.

2. There’s another leaderboard, calculating the highest percentage of a single GOG (vignette is winning with 29 of 51 in GOG 3, for 56.86% (note to GOG posters: please calculate the max points like LB and I did in 4 and 5)

Wrong answers, right here

1. They come for three games. Series outcome (3 pts.) 2-1 A’s
2. In his first two starts this season, Sheets allowed a combined 14 hits and six runs — five of them earned. He walked seven and struck out only four, but in his most recent outing against the Orioles, Sheets proved he’s making progress toward returning to his former All-Star self. Hughes, IP/More BB or K/hits allowed (1 pt. each) 6 IP/ more K / 5 hits
3. Pitchers duel! On getaway day, CC versus Pepe! Begin planning your fake illness now. Work is not worth missing this for. Just do it. Thursday, who pitches better? (Who pitches “better” based on IP, Less H+BB, Runs allowed) (2 pts.) Pepe, only because CC sucks against us inexplicably
Predict the number of stolen bases Gardner has (/-1), the number of times we catch him stealing, and if he steals more than Rajai. (1 pt. each) 2 SB, no CS, Rajai steals more
5. A-Rod FINALLY went deep on Saturday. Whew! I know we were all worried about Ol’ Purple Lips lack of power this season. To be fair, it was against Doug Mathis, who pitched 3.2 innings in mop up vs. the Yankees and only gave up two home runs and six hits. Will the 25 million dollar man go deep in Oakland? Will he hit more than one? How many times does he K (/-1)? (1 pt. each) Yes, only one, 4 K
6. Derek Jeter leads the Yankees with 19 hits. Ryan Sweeney leads the A’s with 16. Who has more hits this series? (1 pt.) Jeter
7. Cliff Pennington leads the A’s with 22 total bases (damn swingles!). There are FIVE Yankees with higher total bases (in order, Cano, Jeter, Posada, Granderson, Purple Lips). Will this change or will there remain five Yankees ahead of our shiny new short stop? (1 if right/-1 if wrong) Remains
8. Our unicorn is supposed to be out of the shop in time for Tuesday’s game. Rosales has really made us miss him quite a bit less than we would and has really allowed us to take our time with unicorn healing-time. How many games does Ellis start vs. Rosales? Who has a better OBP? Does either commit an error? (1 pt. each) 2 Ellis starts/1 for Rosales, Rosales, no
9. Speaking of errors, our own little Dale has made four this young season. He’s probably not on his way to getting that golden glove. As a team, we’ve committed 13 (granted, opening night’s four didn’t help), while the Yankees have committed only 4 total, with no one with more than one error. Who commits more errors this series. A’s vs. Yankees (1 if right/ -1 if wrong)? Bonus point, which individual player commits the most errors? (1 pt.) A’s, Suzuki
10. Poor Travis seems to be becoming marginalized again. After starting the first six games, he’s only managed three starts in the last eight. With Gabe Gross coming on and E-Pat standing in the wings and Crisp soon to return, will Travis get a chance versus the Yankees? Predict games started, plate appearances, hits plus BBs. (1 pt. each)
1 start, 4 PA, 0 H + BB

1) A’s 2, Evil guys 1
2) 5.2 ip, more Ks, 6 hits

6) Jeter
7) no change
8) 3 starts for the unicorn, Rosales, 0 E
9) Yanks, Cano
10) 2 starts, 7 PA, 3 H+BB

Shoot, hope it's not too late

1. They come for three games. Series outcome (3 pts.) A’s 2-1

2. In his first two starts this season, Sheets allowed a combined 14 hits and six runs — five of them earned. He walked seven and struck out only four, but in his most recent outing against the Orioles, Sheets proved he’s making progress toward returning to his former All-Star self. Hughes, IP/More BB or K/hits allowed (1 pt. each) More IP, Hits

3. Pitchers duel! On getaway day, CC versus Pepe! Begin planning your fake illness now. Work is not worth missing this for. Just do it. Thursday, who pitches better? (Who pitches “better” based on IP, Less H+BB, Runs allowed) (2 pts.) PEPE!

(1 pt. each) 2,1, less

How many times does he K (+/-1)? (1 pt. each)

6. Derek Jeter leads the Yankees with 19 hits. Ryan Sweeney leads the A’s with 16. Who has more hits this series? (1 pt.)

(+1 if right/-1 if wrong)

(1 pt. each)

A’s vs. Yankees (+1 if right/ -1 if wrong)? Bonus point, which individual player commits the most errors? (1 pt.)

10. Poor Travis seems to be becoming marginalized again. After starting the first six games, he’s only managed three starts in the last eight. With Gabe Gross coming on and E-Pat standing in the wings and Crisp soon to return, will Travis get a chance versus the Yankees? Predict games started, plate appearances, hits plus BBs. (1 pt. each)

7. No
8. 3, Ellis, No
9. Yanks, Jeter
10. 2, 12, 5

Should one do the GOG if one has no true knowledgebase with which to answer the questions with authority and no reasonable chance of earning any points?

Yes!

A lot of this is just wild-ass guessing anyway.

Plus, if you hit a strong week you might find yourself on one of the leader boards.

"Wild-ass guessing?" Hey, I've put a lot of thought and even research into my GOGs.

Not like it, um, shows in the results. But that can hardly be my fault, right? Right?

NO ---- I am impressed that you do that.....I just wondered if it would be a lesson in futility for ME!!

Don’t want to get laughed out of the GOG on my first try!!

one of the points of the GOG

is that anything can happen in the three game series, so statistical knowledge is no guarantee of success.

But I am curious about whether playing by a system (answering every question based on the career stats of the players involved, or something like that) would lead to success over the course of a season. Maybe when I get some free time, I’ll try that in retrospect for last season’s GOG.

Results

1. 2-1 Yankees
2. 6 IP, more Ks, 4 hits

RESULTS HERE --- I was almost done when doctorK posted, so I figured I'd finish for confirmation.

1. Series outcome (3 pts) [2-1 NYY]
2. Predict Sheets results Wednesday vs. Hughes, IP/More BB or K/hits allowed (1 pt. each) [6.0IP/More K’s (4) to BB’s (3)/4H]
3. CC versus Pepe! Who pitches better? (Who pitches “better” based on IP, Less H+BB, Runs allowed) (2 pts.) [CC 8 vs 6)/Braden 7 vs 10/Braden 2 vs 4] Probably should have used WHIP instead of H+BB.
4. Predict the number of stolen bases Gardner has (/-1), the number of times we catch him stealing, and if he steals more than Rajai. (1 pt. each) [0SB/0CS/No (Davis was 1/1)]
5. Will the 25 million dollar man go deep in Oakland? Will he hit more than one? How many times does he K (/-1)? (1 pt. each) [Yes/No(1HR)/1K]
6. Derek Jeter leads the Yankees with 19 hits. Ryan Sweeney leads the A’s with 16. Who has more hits this series? (1 pt.) [Tie, both had 1H]
(1 if right/-1 if wrong) [No change]
(1 pt. each) [Ellis 1 vs Rosales 2/Neither/Neither]
9. Who commits more errors this series. A’s vs. Yankees (1 if right/ -1 if wrong)? Bonus point, which individual player commits the most errors? (1 pt.) [Yankees 1E/Bonus:Cano]
10. Poor Travis seems to be becoming marginalized again. Predict games started, plate appearances, hits plus BBs. (1 pt. each) [1G/3PA/1H]

Braden v. CC

ERA- Braden 3.00, CC 3.38
WHIP – 1.17, CC 1.25

Add in that Braden was sick (otherwise I think he goes at least 7 IP) and Braden gets the win, and, hell, a pro-A’s bias, and I’d say Braden pitched better.

I would say Braden pitched better, based on the game I saw.

Three in eight is worse than two in six by my counting.
Ten in eight is worse than seven in six.

BRADEN is the right answer to #3

Seems like folks are counting the Rosales/Ellis OBP tie in different ways. Any comment?
