Listless A's Lose Pitchers "Duel" (0-3)

While his final line doesn't really show it, Anderson didn't have his best stuff on display tonight. He left several breaking balls up high, and his location and control were off all night. Fister was only marginally better, hanging several curveballs that wouldn't have fooled many hitters.

But alas, this was a game that featured two of the worst offenses in the American League. Anderson ended up turning in a stellar-looking 6 IP 0 ER 6K line, while Fister shined even greater, allowing 3 hits in 8 innings of work, walking none, and striking out 4. Obviously, the magic pixie voodoo dust sprinkled on the basepaths by the dancing Seattle groundscrew worked wonders.

Perhaps this game was more a story of two offenses shooting themselves in the foot over and over again. In the bottom of the 4th inning, Milton Bradley doubled with one out, putting a man on second and third for the next batter, Casey Kotchman. Brett Anderson responded by striking out the next two batters to end the inning. The Mariners again killed another rally in the bottom of the 7th after Chone Figgins doubled. In one of the wackiest plays I've seen in years, Brad Ziegler uncorked a wild pitch. Kurt Suzuki flipped over backwards to his right to snag the pitch, followed by an immediate throw to third base. Figgins was beaten to third by the ball, fairly easily. One has to wonder how a speedy guy like Figgins could possibly be thrown out by a catcher who had to spin a full clumsy circle before throwing.

Of course, pitchers duels have to come to an end sometime, and this one was blown open in the bottom of the 8th. Brad Ziegler clearly didn't have any control or pitch movement tonight, and it showed. After opening up the inning with a single and a walk, he grooved a low fastball to Milton Bradley, who parked it in the right field seats for a three-run homer. That was all the offense Seattle needed tonight, as that home run plated the only runs of the game.

We're gonna have a fifth starter battle tomorrow night, as we wrap up this series with a rubber game, starting at 7:10 PM.

between a meeting and getting the kids to bed, but….

this is the A’s that I expected this year. No offense, good pitching and questionable bullpen decisions.

It sounds like it was exciting at least.

I pride myself on being (or at least trying to be) a halfway reasonable fan

Not getting swayed by the overwhelming highs or the unbearable lows. But simply put: 8 scoreless innings against Doug Fister is unacceptable. The rubber match tomorrow should be interesting. Hopefully, Gio’s bringing his A++ game.

Side note to danmerqury, whom I failed to reply to earlier in the evening— Conan’s show was flat-out great. Exactly what you would expect out of him— that almost old-timey variety show mix of comedy and music. I enjoyed myself immensely. The fact that the man couldn’t be disingenuous if there was a gun to his head made the show all the more excellent.

Yeah, man

I have to say, I’ve watched Conan since middle school (roughly 14 years or so). There were a few times where he went off-script that felt very rewarding as a fan— not only in terms of it being funny, but in terms of feeling like I was getting insight as well. I didn’t laugh myself into hysterics like when I saw Dave Chappelle’s first standup special (not live, I should point out, but on DVD), but I came away feeling very satisfied.

I’d still like to see Patterson get a chance to start a few games. I have no doubt that he’s a better offensive player than Buck or Chavez. That looked like a reasonably good pitch. Low, inside. Bradley just golfed it and got the fat part of the bat on the ball.

Ziggy’s other pitches… well, it looked like he had a hard time finding the strike zone. But that toss that ended up as a homer, I didn’t have too much trouble with that one.

Economics in action!

What we have here is a textbook example of something called a sunk cost dilemma

While the project progresses towards disaster, the decision not to go on with the project gets more and more unlikely. The project is like a train: once it has been put on a track, it is very difficult to change its direction.
But in the end, the overall payoff of the project is negative.

Now does this “project” sound like something (or someone) familiar?

I don't know

Team has a head so deep in the sand when it comes to Chavez I wouldn’t be surprised he continues like this for the rest of the year and still is a regular DH if he can stay healthy. I’ve been wondering, who many players in this organization could outproduce him from the DH spot right now? Probably every bench player except maybe Rosales, and few guys in Sacramento for sure – Cust, Carter, Taylor, probably McPherson (he can hit it out every now and then at least). Jai Miller? Matt Carson?

I agree with this… I’m a Buck-backer, too. Buck should be the one getting AB’s in AAA. Patterson is pretty worthless to this team with Adam Rosales willing and able to play every position better than E. Patt.

I would be willing to bet that E.Patt would clear waivers, too.

it seems like there are some veterans who are demanding higher salaries than owners think they are worth, so nobody can come to any agreements. pretty simple situation where 2 sides can’t come to an agreement. and players/agents are trying to say there are rules being broken here? is there a rule that says once you’ve had 1 MLB contract, you’re entitled to MLB contracts until you decide to retire?

No

Their “beef” is that the owners are acting in concert in setting a price point for the player and in even worst cases sharing what they’ve offered. By doing so, they drive down the price of the player because they know what his true worth is amongst other teams. If the best he’s been offered is $5 and he’s demanding $10, no team’s going to offer him that since they know offering him $5.5 is the best deal on the table.

that makes sense

it is far more likely that the owners’ side is the one that would need to be reined in.

this is a case, though, where the ends come realllly close to justifying the means. older not-so-good-anymore players have been getting overpaid for quite a few years. it’s somewhat refreshing to see some of these guys not get overpaid. then again, the owners (some of the owners) are the idiots who showed no restraint in the past and got themselves into this situation.

it’s a shame that wealth doesn’t correlate more closely to intelligence and sound judgement. for one thing, the non-correlation is going to keep leading pro sports owners to making uncountable shitty deals with players, coaches, etc., and it’s also just frustrating to see a dimwit get rich while plenty of really capable people are barely getting by.

Honestly

I don’t even believe Bonds. Mid-40s, injury ridden, likely full of PEDs and possible legal issues and he can’t play in the outfield and be worth anything. There’d be very few teams with a spot for him and none with a need of that kind of gamble.

If Jack Cust is the answer to our prayers

how come nobody else wants him?

I’m not a Cust-hater — it seemed odd that Beane would risk losing him, and he is our best power hitter … I’m just wondering why no other team in the major leagues picked him up off waivers.
Are we so bad offensively that our “best” hitter cleared waivers without so much as a nibble?

JC

My reasoning: #1 – He can’t play the field, so all NL Teams are out. #2 – It’s probably pretty easy to get “mediocre” players through waivers right after rosters are set after Spring Training. #3 – He’s 31 years old, and has been declining for 3 years in a row. #4 – Other teams are going with youth or trying to compete with what they have.

You'd think though --

if Cust was the hitter some make him out to be — that somebody would make room for him, wouldn’t they?
One of two things seems to be true … either Cust is a really good hitter and the other teams in baseball are stupid not to pick him up for next to nothing. Or Cust really isn’t that good.

Last night's loss was the first time we directly paid for Wuertz/Devine being out

Gaudin was not a logical choice to face a good lefty hitter. With Wuertz or Devine in the mix, you can more easily mix and match Ziggy and punt if he’s off. With the current bullpen, the lack of depth caught up to the A’s — Ziggy was off, A’s lose. Not Geren’s or Ziggy’s fault, just a bummer.

I hear all the time about how

our bullpen is going to get better when Wuertz and/or Devine get back. Are we really so sure about that? Wuertz had a great season last year, but before that he wasn’t all that. Devine was fabulous for about 50 innings and now he hasn’t played in a year.

I’m not saying I think they’re going to be bad or anything, but it sure seems like everyone is putting a lot of faith in some small samples at a position which is known for being inconsistent.
