Game still 0-0 in the middle of the 8th. Suzuki just did a cartwheel to throw out Chone Figgins. I'm so proud.

He said today

(postgame talk by Ziegler) that he couldn’t hit anything with his pitches. He said walking Sweeney was just the worst. Could not throw a strike.

Which kind of makes you wonder:
If I am pitching (hypothetically) and I see my own results and I know this is all terrible, cannot get anything in the right location….

….do I feign an injury and take myself out, or simply signal the dugout “I’m done, enough damage today..”??? I mean, you want to believe in yourself, but facts is facts. Is it only the manager, only the pitching coach, who can “pull the string” and you’re only allow to “push the string”?

…for the good of the team, cannot a guy just signal “I got nada” and be done??

Blez: Most folks seem to believe that the big flaw with the 2010 Oakland A's will be the lack of any power.

by One won lost won on Apr 14, 2010 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions

That's a good point.

That being said I doubt many big league pitcher would “pull” themselves out. Not that it’s the right thing to do or make any easy decisions for the manager. My issue with Geren last night was red flags that are very easy to spot. One being what Zeigs said, he was all over the place. He does not have the stuff to get by lacking location. Two was having him pitch to a left handed hitter (switch) with runners in scoring position in a 0-0 game. The other team will likely score half the time in that situation.

Relief pitchers really need to have a quick hook. Ziegler was CLEARLY off tonight, he couldn’t find the strikezone with a searchlight, yet he was left in there to die.

So with two of our best relievers on the DL,

one of our best relievers came into a tie game in the 8th and was way off. In that situation, you’re probably going to lose. You don’t just yank the pitcher and go to some meh reliever; you go “f***” as you hope he makes one good pitch and gets two outs.

Ouch. Not a position I’d like to be in.

In my opinion Ziegler’s strictly a ROOGY now (if such things exist). One who’s got such a complex throwing motion that if it’s even slightly out of synch he’s awful. I’d expect a professional baseball manager to be all over that and have another option warmed up.

Gaudin on the other hand is going to really help our bullpen this year I think. I’ll be very irritated if he’s used strictly as a mop up guy – he’s much better than that.

I'd say to that

1977 playoffs, Kansas City versus the New York Yankees

Fifth and deciding game. Look at the ninth inning, eighth inning by Whitey Herzog, manager of Kansas City. KC ahead in the eighth, 3-2, and ultimately lose the game, 5-3. Herzog replaced pitcher after pitcher. It didn’t work.

Sometimes, luck and unluck decide it all. Managers? They’ve seen every side, just like us. But if you let confirmation bias decide your actions, you’ll be wrong more than right.

See the note above, about the 1977 fifth and deciding game KC-NY playoffs

Look up the PxP on Baseball Reference.

Real managers “lose” important ball games. This was a KC team, by the way, that went 34-5 down the stretch in August and September. No Yankee team, no St Louis team, ever had a record like that to take a pennant race. So, an all time historically-good team still “blew a lead” no matter what was attempted by the manager….the “real manager”.

It would have been fun to watch if it was two pitchers pitching well.

Anderson wasn’t nearly as good as his final line suggested. Fister DEFINITELY wasn’t – he should have been hit around tonight, all he was throwing was fastballs.

We'll have to agree to disagree then.

He nearly got taken deep twice early on and gave up far too many hits against a lineup of this quality.

I thought he showed excellent composure on the mound to get out of a few jams and his stuff was JUST good enough to help him there, but he certainly didn’t pitch great in my opinion.

As for Fister, he hung a number of curves that really, really should have been punished.

I just wouldn't expect a great deal from them this year.

Oh definitely

100% agreement there. Don’t bother bringing either of them up unless they’re absolutely 100% ready and they might actually do some good for the team (i.e. not in a lost season). But when they’re here, I have no problem having them shoulder the load a little. That doesn’t mean 3 – 4 guys, but high expectations.

He's irritating me at the moment.

He’s trying to crank it, but he doesn’t have the power. He caught two balls pretty sweetly today and they were both fly outs.

I was especially disappointed that he didn’t get the runner home from third. After Barton he’s our most professional hitter, I was expecting more from him that a shallow fly ball to Bradley. Ah well.
