Blackmail!!!

It does seem that the Twins is gonna lose their closer Nathan for the season, and will be looking for a closer in order to contend. Now, the A's theoretically have 4 RP who can close - Bailey, Ziegler, Wuertz, and Devine. I do think now is the perfect time to committ grand larceny against the Twins' minor league system. So, which players in the Twins' system should Billy Beane be asking for when he is placing  that phone call to the Twins front office?

fangraphs top 10 prospects for Minnesota

is here.

Wilson Ramos, the #2 prospect on that list, caught my eye because he is currently blocked by Joe Mauer. Depending on how confident Minnesota is about signing Mauer this year, they might be willing to part with him. Of course, the A’s are pretty deep in catchers as well. Maybe someone could suggest a multi-team deal? I’m really horrible at this stuff.

Billy's not gonna mess with our bullpen...

Not true

At best, we are a .500 ballclub or about a 85 wins. Trading one or 2 of our bullpen guys ain’t changing the fact we aren’t making the playoffs this year. The future of our team is not Ziegler or Wuertz or even Devine, it’s Carter, Taylor, Suzuki, and whomever we can get from the Twins.

I think we could be better than that

But +1 about not true. BB is opportunistic and if there’s a desperate team he will take full advantage of that.

I would argue that Devine could be part of the future

health permitting.

uhh...

bullpens are the perfect place to build up value by sticking (relatively) replaceable guys in the closer role and then trading them off.
how badly does our bullpen miss huston street?

Yes, I understand and know all of this.

I’m just saying that I don’t think he’s gonna mess with our bullpen now because this year especially we need strong middle and late inning protection for our young/injury prone starters. But, knowing (or not knowing) Billy, who knows what could happen…

Does anyone miss Huston Street? No, but remember that Huston, for lack of better words, was having some problems closing games for us.

Not top 10

Unless it is a multiplayer or multiteam, I don’t think we could get a top 10 Twins prospect in return for just a closer, unless that closer is Bailey.

I want Mauer and no less.

If they give the A’s Mauer I guess they can have Ziggy.

I guess.

It really wouldn't be a fair unless

Unless we then signed Mauer to a 10 year deal at the league minimum…

I'd definitely be in favor of swinging a deal like that.

I mean, we’re not going to get a really great prospect or anything, but with all of the leverage and strength where they need it, we’re in a pretty great negotiating position. I’m sure Beane has already made a call.

Taken down with hearts alive, our hearts alive.

Beane

I don’t think he makes a lot of outgoing calls when it comes to this stuff.

Eh

If we can take their top prospect OF Aaron Hicks for Devine or Wuertz + minor leaguer I’d be down. That could seal us on the OF of the future.

I’m sure the twins will be ready to give up something. They’re gonna be desperate to make their first year in the new open-air ballpark a winner. I say we take their future souls for the immediate gratification.

It's just more exciting with Billy Beane running the team.

by ru155 on Mar 10, 2010 8:25 AM PST reply actions

Also

The Twins have plenty of their own relievers, I think it’s unlikely they will give up much of anything for an RP. Nico’s idea of getting Tyler Ladendorf again seems about right (plus then it is definitely black male. . .)

Devine's elbow tendenitous make throw a small wrench in trade plans

Methinks the definition of the word "blackmail" should be consulted here

“Extortion” might be a little more accurate here.

Also, the Cubs are in desperate need for a reliever, too.
