AN Fantasy Baseball Contest - Teams Announced!
I wrote an A's season preview for SBNation.com that was posted over the weekend. It's nothing you don't already know, but the Vegas odds are listed.
There is an interesting article on SFGate.com about A's team rep Brad Ziegler.
Today's game is a split-squad. Half of the A's will play the Rangers; the other half; the Royals at 12:00 PM.
There will be a game thread.
First of all, I'd just like to thank everyone who submitted an entry to try out the CBSSports.com Fantasy Baseball Commissioner League. If you don't know what I'm talking about, here was the original post.
This was a very hard decision for the judges to make, since there were quite a few of you who applied, and I wanted to play with everyone! But the guest judges have made their final picks and I have them here for you.
If you didn't make this league, but would still like to use the Fantasy Baseball Commissioner's League from CBSSports.com (or if someone wants to start another AN league), you can still sign up! CBSSports.com has offered AN half-off using this link. That takes the price down to $89.99 a league, which is less than $8 a person for a 12-team. If you do start another CBSSports.com league (either with fellow ANers or on your own with friends), email me at baseballgirl1976 at hotmail and I'll make sure you have a fabulous prize to offer for the winner.
If you're playing in another fantasy league, tell us about it. And can someone give me draft advice? Who do I want this year? Any sleeper picks? Who do I want to avoid? And of course: Pujols or A-Rod?
So...without further ado...here are your players for the First Annual BBG Fantasy Baseball Challenge!

Far and away, the judges' favorite comment was this one, from skinnyjohn, who makes up the 12th team in this league:
When I was growing up, my mother told me I could be anything I wanted to be. When I was 7, I decided I wanted to be a Berenstain Bear. My mother lied to me. Nineteen years later, here I sit in Papa Bear’s basement, chained to an iron post. I will not be set free until I earn a fantasy baseball trophy for his team, "Papa Bear’s Revenge."
Our draft will be held next week; any and all fantasy tips are encouraged and welcomed (as long as they help TeamBaseballgirl)!
Seriously, what would you say to someone who has never before played Fantasy Baseball?

I can offer you a much better version of fantasy baseball
Although it doesn’t involve real players, but it DOES go year round.
They call their best player "Kung Fu Panda" and they complain that people aren’t taking them or the game seriously enough? -Nick
Yes, I am tempted.
But I must resist. I’m just now coming off of nearly two years of that other fake baseball game. I am hoping to spend my free time on actual money making pursuits.
my first rule you're not gonna like....
1. never draft or pick up a player from your favorite team unless he’s got insane fantasy value. the reason behind this, your loyalty keeps him on your roster far too long than he should be and you tend to overvalue them.
2. never draft a ny met.
3. my third and final rule used to apply to the colorado rockies pitching staff but now their pitching is respective, don’t draft rookies. just like players on your favorite team, rookies are overvalued and most likely will be either put in a platoon role or sent down after the first month. i’ve seen that happen hundreds of times.

I would agree with all of these
1. When I drafted even a couple A’s players I was last place consistently. Last year I didn’t have any and I won my 6 team league. This year I have one A’s pitcher, Michael Weurtz, and I should probably drop him for a closer now that Joe Nathan is hurt.

Advice?
I’d say that in the early rounds, you should look to pick up value at positions that don’t have a ton of offensive powerhouses. So while everyone else is making a desperate run at 1st basemen or pitchers in the first round (both of which are always deep with talent), I’m usually looking to pick up a Joe Mauer or Chase Utley (both of which are kings among men for their respective positions).
Also, I tend to let my opponents snag all of the older-than-dirt vets while I try to err on the side of youth. Sabean’s First Law states that the level to which one overvalues experience is inversely proportional to one’s understanding of baseball.

This is exactly what I do

Advice?
Mock drafts are super helpful. I don’t know about CBS, but Yahoo has mock drafts going around the clock. They are not 100% accurate as you will end up with a guy in the room who drafts all Yankees or all Red Sox just to be a goof, but you do get a good feel for where players are getting drafted and what rounds to get the guys you want on your team.
Some are real, right? Like Anne Frank's?

Learn to draft players even if you don't like them
it’s all about the numbers.
One rule I hear all the time is don’t pay too much for saves. “They” claim they are easy to find in the low rounds or on the waiver wire because rise and fall quickly.
I was also just going to say what Joey C. did first. If a position isn’t very deep I try to use a top pick there because once the 1st couple guys go it is slim pickings. It’s worse in bigger leagues (12 teams is twice the size of my league) like yours because there are less players to spread around. The shallowest postions this year IMO are C (3 top guys) and SS (4 or 5 top guys). 2B and 3B are actually kind of deep compared to recent years.

BBG, this is the only fantasy advice you need:
Draft all AL West guys, take a lot of speedy defensive players, and complete your bullpen before you touch any other positions.
Oh, and Barry Bonds is a great sleeper pick.
Taken down with hearts alive, our hearts alive.
Hey...wait!
You have an agenda!

Woot!
I’m not gonna lie…I’m here to win. If I can’t win the league, I’ll at least win in moves made! I’m also drafting Eric Chavez in the first round. That should lock down my 3B starter and then I can focus on bargains elsewhere!

Papa Bear is pleased
I got two rations today!
Brother Bear, annoyed by Papa Bear’s leniency with me of late, pissed in my water bowl.
Not cool, Brother Bear.
In the basement, the Berenstains possess what they believe to be the perfectly preserved remains of Great Uncle Bear, a beloved ancestor. I don’t have the heart to tell them that it’s just a busted animatronic Billy Bob from Showbiz Pizza Place.
He was drunk and exhausted, but he was critically acclaimed and respected.
Go team!
As far as advice, draft best player available in my opinion. While it’s nice to have someone solid at every position, don’t draft a crappy player just because you need to fill the position—if you need to punt catcher or SS because nobody good is available, c’est la vie. Go with who will provide the numbers.

My advice
get your power numbers in the infield, speed in the outfield.
2B is really shallow this year.
1B is very deep.
Don’t draft all A’s …. it doesn’t work … trust me.
Have fun with it.
2B is not shallow IMHO
Utley
Kinsler
Pedroia
Brandon Phillips
Ben Zobrist (he qualifies for 2B on yahoo!)
Robinson Cano
all those guys have power and speed (except Cano only has 5 SB, but he makes up for it in avg, hits, 2B, HR, RBI, R)
After them there is
Aaron Hill (36 HR 108 RBI 103 R)
Dan Uggla (30 HR 92 BB)
Brian Roberts (56 2B 30 BB)
Jose Lopez (25 HR 96 RBI 42 2B)
That is 10 second basemen worthy of starting on a fantasy team. There are also a few guys that wouldn’t be the end of the world to have.

true
if you’re in a 10 team league, probably not as shallow. 12 teamer …. little shallow
who would you want in the 3rd? Cano, Phillips, Zobrist, or Pedroia?
3rd round?
Pedroia probably. you are right about the 1B position though.

my league does an autodraft :-(
we have 6 teams and 9 keepers each and I didn’t have a 1st baseman so I pre-ranked a few so I would be sure to get one. Even after 9 rounds I still ended up with Kendry Morales, Derek Lee, Carlos Pena, Lance Berkman, and 2 guys who had 1B as a backup position (Jose Lopez and Mark DeRosa).
Luckily our roster has two 1B positions, 2 Utility positions and 2 bench postions so I have a spot for all of them but I might trade Carlos Pena for David Aardsma because Joe Nathan was my top closer.
Would you make that trade? (Pena for Aardsma)

damn!
that’s a lot of 1B. nice.
honestly, I don’t trade for closers, cause there’s always someone who comes up. If I were you, I’d just wait and see if anyone loses their job or something.
If you really need a closer, I’d make the trade.
well
there are 4 relief slots to fill. I have Mariano Rivera, Trevor Hoffman, Michael Wuertz, and the injured Joe Nathan. Bobby Jenks is available on the waiver wire, I think maybe I will just drop Nathan and add Jenks (although Jenks is on the decline). The other part of the trade was Jason Werth for Adam Wainwright, which is a good deal, but losing Pena andd Werth is losing 75 HR and 199 RBI.
